Former GOP senator Chuck Hagel endorses Democrat Joe Sestak in Pennsylvania

What makes the following even more interesting is that Chuck Hagel’s name has already surfaced as a possible replacement for Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, who wants to leave next year.

From the Associated Press:

Former Nebraska Sen. Chuck Hagel — a Republican — threw his support behind Democrat Joe Sestak in Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate race on Monday.

Hagel told The Associated Press on Monday that Sestak has demonstrated during his two terms in Congress that he puts the interests of the nation and his constituents ahead of his party.

“I think he’s exactly what our country needs more of. I think he’s what the Senate needs more of — courageous, independent thinking,” Hagel said.

“That’s what the job is about. You are supposed to use your judgment.”
Hagel refused to comment on the candidacy of Sestak’s opponent, Republican Pat Toomey, a former congressman.

The men are seeking the seat long held by Sen. Arlen Specter, a Republican-turned-Democrat whom Sestak beat in the primary.
Hagel plans to announce his endorsement Tuesday at news conferences with Sestak in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

Hagel is one of those moderate, pragmatic Republicans who are now almost extinct. I am one of those as well, but the party has excluded me. The current crop of right wing Republicans are a scary bunch. We moderates no longer have a party.

Elections have implications

Knight,

why wouldn’t the dems take control of congress and pass their programs? The elections OVERWHELMINGLY put them in power. Obama crushed McCain and the seats went to the dems by the dozens. These people were duly elected in fair, democratic elections. Protected by the constitution and stuff like that – you know the GOP is always spouting off about this kind of thing.

If the Bush administration had done more than giveaway trillions in prescription coverage, start an unfunded (and mostly unfounded) war, and takeover the banks in october of 08, maybe the elections would’ve gone the other way. The Bush accomplishments sound a lot like socialism if I didn’t know better!

@Southern Knight – then you ought to read the healthcare legislation.
- Insurance Marketplace: Rep. idea
- Mandatory Coverage: Mitt Romney’s idea in Mass.
- No Govt. Ins. Plan: Rep. idea

OR TARP – Bush’s idea

OR Carbon Cap&Trade – another Rep. idea (See NOx trading program)

And on and on…This administration has made repeated efforts to govern from the middle, and Rupert Murdoch keeps pouring millions into campaigns to con people into believing that Obama is a left wing socialist. You have been bought and paid for, but can’t even see it.

How DARE you people blame the GOP for this SOCIALIST MESS.

IT IS ALL OBAMA’S FAULT.

GEORGE W. BUSH WAS NOT A SOCIALIST. He was a Compassionate Conservative and worked to SERVE TEH LORD in all he did – Laura too!! The Prescription Coverage – Medicare D (I think) – is a BLESSING. Without it, my MOTHER could not afford her life saving drigs.

WHY DO YOU WANT MY MOTHER TO DIE?

All the other things you “say” were the GOP’s idea, THEN WHY DIDN’T THEY SUPPORT THEM?

YOU ARE A LIAR.

GOD HATES LIARS.

And also, tarps are for covering things up.

You will BURN for that!!!!1!!

Everyone knows JESUS had brown hair, brown eyes, was about six foot tall, right handed, and GLOWED WITH THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD.

I’ve seen the pictures.

Call me what you want, I LIVE FOR THE LORD.

And also, your random capitalization makes you look STUPID.

It’s funny to me how when a republican endorses a democrat he is praised from the highest mountain by the media and then immediately dismissed after the election. But if a democrat endorses a republican (see Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman) their opinion is irrelevant.
