Guess who won’t be coming to lunch with Obama?

Updated on Monday: Although a staffer said he didn’t plan to show, U.S. Rep. John Lewis was present for President Barack Obama’s visit to Atlanta, we’re told.

President Barack Obama’s second visit to Georgia this year may be one of those parties best remembered for the guests who failed to show.

The president will spend the better part of Monday in Atlanta — first speaking to a convention of disabled veterans. Then the president will be the featured guest at a Democratic National Committee luncheon and fundraiser.

Many Democrats will flock to the downtown events. Michael Thurmond, the labor commissioner and U.S. Senate candidate, will be there. U.S. Rep. David Scott of Atlanta will greet Obama as he steps off Air Force One, as will Gov. Sonny Perdue — a Republican.

Mayor Kasim Reed will give the first African-American president an effusive introduction at the DNC fundraiser. A spokesman for Sanford Bishop said the Democratic congressman from southwest Georgia will be in the audience for both events.

But the list of Democrats who won’t be there is long and conspicuous.

Roy Barnes, the former governor and his party’s July choice to retake the office, has received the most attention for his decision to give priority to a Monday schedule that will take him through Middle and South Georgia. But there are others:

– Ken Hodges, the nominee for attorney general, will be in Albany for a case he’s working on for his law firm;

– U.S. Rep. Jim Marshall of Macon, who faces yet another Republican challenger, has plans to help his daughter move;

– U.S. Rep. John Barrow of Savannah will remain in Washington for “a minor medical procedure.” And, yes, he’ll have Republican opposition in November.

– A staffer for John Lewis said the Atlanta congressman simply has other plans;

– And U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson of Decatur will remain in Washington to prepare for the September impeachment of a federal judge. He’s one of the impeachment managers.

Clearly, some of the excuses are legitimate. The congressional summer recess began only last Friday. Monday, then, is the first real day of vacation for U.S. House members.

Given their large African-American constituencies, neither Lewis nor Johnson has anything to fear from being photographed at Obama’s side. Barrow didn’t hesitate to appear with the president in Savannah this winter.

But it is simply a fact that many other Democrats can’t afford to be seen with a president awarded a 37 percent approval rating by Georgia voters just last month.

Republicans are sure to chortle at the snubbing of Obama as something rare and, thus, significant. But in fact, Democrats are simply re-embracing a long-standing Southern tradition.

As a governor and U.S. senator, Herman Talmadge would schedule fishing trips that coincided with the quadrennial meetings of the Democratic National Convention.

Sam Nunn, concerned with winning his first term in the U.S. Senate in 1972, stayed as far away as he could from Democratic presidential nominee George McGovern.

Steve Anthony is the former chief of staff for the late House Speaker Tom Murphy and now his biographer. “Witness to History: A Memoir” (McGraw-Hill, $19.95) just hit the bookshelves.

One passage in the book dwells on Murphy’s reluctance to back Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis in 1988 — who was nominated at that year’s convention in Atlanta. The House speaker was at the apex of his power, but he had opposition at home that year.

“A reporter asked the speaker if he was going to vote for [Dukakis]. And the speaker deferred. It created a little bit of a firestorm with the liberal wing of the party at the time,” Anthony said.

“It wasn’t that they didn’t want to be engaged in national or presidential politics,” said Anthony, who now teaches political science at Georgia State University. “It’s that they knew what the voters of Georgia would tolerate. And when a candidate presented himself that fit that definition, they were for him.”

Murphy, for instance, was a reliable supporter of Al Gore. In the 2008 presidential contest, as the fight between Obama and Hillary Clinton reached fever pitch, Barnes was safely tucked behind the candidacy of fellow lawyer John Edwards of North Carolina.

But even safe decisions aren’t always safe. This week, the Georgia GOP sent out an e-mail with a photograph of Barnes standing next to the fallen, philandering Edwards.

Nor is the tradition of shunning national party figures restricted to Democrats. In 2005, Perdue — a year away from re-election — ducked an appearance with the not-so-popular Dick Cheney, then vice president.

But the fact that Obama is a sitting president has posed an unfamiliar problem for Georgia Democrats. Appearing with Jimmy Carter was a matter of state loyalty. Bill Clinton, too, was a familiar Southerner — sponsored and encouraged by then Gov. Zell Miller.

And the situation is made more discomfiting by the possibilities that 2010 has dangled in front of Democrats.

“My question is, when I first heard [Obama] was coming was, why did they do it? Who are the brains in Washington that thought, let’s do something in Georgia — and that it would benefit the candidates in Georgia?” Anthony asked.

“Here you’ve got a decent situation for a Democrat to win the governor’s race. Their move here could endanger that,” he added.

For the record, the state Democratic Party referred all inquiries about the Obama visit to the DNC in Washington.

Notice how jim won’t explain why he runs the Courtney English story, but won’t talk about how the blue ribbon commission that is “investigating” the CRCT cheating scandal is full of people who have business dealings with APS?

As an “insider” he has to know about it, so the question is why doesn’t he have the journalistic integrity to talk about it?

@anthony. The main reason the President is going to be in Georgia is to speak to the Disabled Veterans of America at their convention. Perhaps “the brains in Washington” thought that the man who leads our armed forces should speak to such an honorable group. I am sorry if speaking to veterans who spilled their blood in defense of our nation doesn’t fit into your parties agenda.

No one wants to be seen with a failure that doesn’t do what the public wants, demonizes those who disagree with him, and someone who has an in the 30s job approval rating.

You also don’t want to stand next to the face of the Culture of Death….a man who supports the dismembering Partial Birth abortion technique and votes against the Born Alive Act (law to give medical attention to save a child who survives an abortion…w/o it the baby is placed in a room until it dies).

And he calls himself a health care champion…Bull. Funny someone who was allowed to be born dictating who lives and who dies. Can’t trust:

John, you are much too sensible for the current political climate! Mr. Anthony should take a look at the first sentence of Article II, Section 2 of the US constitution. That might give a hint as to why the president will be in Atlanta.

I am happy that President Obama will come to Georgia to speak to the disabled veterans. These men and women actually served our country and they deserve to hear from the Commander in Chief. By the way, the individuals who write negative commons about our president are some of the same people who did not think that he was going to win in 2008.

The president will continue to have the support of the true Americans.

Remind people that it is the Donkey Party that objects to the expulsion of illegal aliens from America…that seeks to outlaw guns.

Roy Barnes new tack on illegal aliens is especially amusing since it is the Democratic Party that has filed suit to void the wise law requiring voters to show official ID at the polls.

To Jim Galloway: I quote you, “Given their large African-American constituencies, neither Lewis nor Johnson has anything to fear from being photographed at Obama’s side.” RACIST MUCH??? Many of us Conservative Christian parents who are involved in scouts and/or PTA and the Church love the Commander in Chief and the USA and not only support the troops but have many in our families serve. Racists like you are in the minority in Georgia, although I think most of you are outside the Metro area and suburbs. Most of us (who pay most of the taxes in Georgia) are good family people and are INTELLECTUAL progressives, not throwback web-toed racists. Colin… ease up a little on Jim. Since the Republican wave hit Georgia a few years ago, the numbers show that race and party are close kin here. Jim was speaking from a demographic/stats standpoint. If you look at the President’s approval numbers there is a very strong correlation with race (particularly with male voters). That doesn’t make us all racists. I happen to see myself much the way you described yourself. I also happen to be a white male who strongly supports Pres. Obama. However, I’m the exception to the rule in Georgia. There are too many racist for sure. But I don’t believe Jim is one of them.

@Dawg ‘88. President’s Obama’s approval rating is not in the 30’s. It’s slightly above 50%. I think you’re getting him confused with our previous president, who’s approval rating was at 25% when he left office, but not before he trashed everything in his path. Because of the disastrous decisions made by him and his totally incompetent administration, we now have hundreds of thousands more disabled veterans than we should. And oh yeah, the 4,000 plus who gave their lives for…hmm…for…remind me again what they gave their lives for?

And you’re incensed at him for what reason? Is it because he gave you access to affordable health care? Is it because he’s steering the U.S. economy out of the second worst predicament ever? Is it because he’s black? And before you start going off about our deficit, know that we were spending 10 BILLION DOLLARS A MONTH IN IRAQ (all totaled that adds up to about seven health care plans in the event you don’t own a calculator). Conservatives mouthing off about fiscal responsibility is laughable beyond words. Where were they from 2003-2008?

Sigh

When will Democrats stop trying to pretend they can fool voters? Democrats running away from a Democratic president makes the entire party look spineless.

The number of voters who will not vote for someone because they went to lunch with the first African-American honoring disabled vets is far smaller than the number of voters who’ll stay home because they didn’t go.

Stop pandering to racists. Barnes has lost my vote, I’ll vote for other Democrats, but not him, not now.

I am not a disabled veteran, but I deeply respect and honor those who have served and sacrificed for America. It is ironic to me that a President who has not served this nation in that capacity should address such an honorable group, considering the aplogies he has made around the world for America. His systematic destruction of capitalism makes it difficult for veterans to find a job, as it does for the rest of the population. The America for which these disabled veterans sacrificed is falling victim to the “change you can believe in” for a “hope” of socialism.

The way it works is that those who voted and lost in 2008 have an other chance in 2012. Please pare the petty statements that all those who like him are not American. America voted for him and also not for him but the majority for him. If the majority votes for him again OK and if it does not OK. It is the way our system works. For those of you posting with regard to perceived racism:

This is not about race. It is about America and her future. If Obama and the liberals have their way, they will systematically destroy this country – and they have made a very good start of doing just that. No, I do not respect Obama. I see him for what he is and I see what his real goals are.

As for racism, I submit that the worst problem with racism in this country today is with blacks. They are the racists even as they accuse whites of racism. They have learned that if they scream “racism”, they gain an audience which they use to their advantage.

So spare me: instead of the accusations of racism, try supporting your arguments with fact and logic.

You wrote we were spending 10 billion a month for the wars as if Obama has not continued the massive spending on war. In fact in the month of February 12 billion was spent on Iraq and Afghanistan. Which is an increase from the Bush years

It is truly disappointing that almost every comment on this page blindly supports one party and defiles the other constantly. Obama has flaws but he is also trying to do good things for this country. Politics should not be so black and white, you dont have to hate or love a politician, there is a middle ground.
Every year we seem to become more rabidly attached to a party instead of the people who make up that party, this problem is extremely obvious on this board where 85% of what is being spewed here is hateful, accusatory and incorrect.

@President Obama is “White Too”

Obama claimed his “white grandmother” and “white mother” as an electioneering ploy only. The out-of-control massive spending of money that the U.S. doesn’t have only creates problems for futue generations of taxpayers – IF this country can survive that long. Since only roughly 50% of Americans pay income taxes, half of the country isn’t too concerned with the ever-growing problems created by Obama and the liberal democrats.

When the 50% paying income taxes finally say, “Enough is enough” or the U.S. is unable to borrow more money, the “entitlements” will finally end. For generations of people who have “lived off the government” (the people paying taxes), it will be a very rude awakening.

Then, and only then, will all the people fully see the folly of Obama, liberal democrats and their ilk.

Alas, it will be too late . . .

Jill, and Left, keep whistling past the graveyard. Come November, the Democrat, liberal, quasi-communist Congress will take a hit like it never has in our Nation’s history. The 46 seats lost in the ‘94 election will look penny ante after the votes are tallied. How is Obozo fixing ANYTHING? Unemployment is still near 10%, the average person can’t get a loan even AFTER he bailed out all the banks, and we are STILL mired in two wars we can’t afford to fight and he PROMISED to get us out of. Throw in the fact that he and this pinko Congress of his shoved a healthcare plan up our a– that even THEY exempted themselves from, and you have a recipe for a major butt kicking in the fall elections. Keep on spouting your false hope…that’s all it is. And Left, if you think this state is that bad, the last time I checked, I75 North was still open.

And that silly pansy confederate flag offended lots of Americans, black and white. Glad it’s burning up in somebodys cookout grill. Since you flag people have already been appropriately ridiculed by Eddie Izzard I will skip the derision. I’m pretty sure you knuckle-draggers are used to it by now. You guys have been called stupid so often that you have no choice but to embrace it: “Yeh, I’m the guy with the GED who knows I’m better than everybody else ’cause I’ve got me a double wide and a case of PBR and the skin of white Jesus’ angels. Ah’m a patriot, an Obama is gonna take away mah guns (which make me a real man ’cause guns are sexy and fool wimmin into thinking I’m well endowed) and take away my 2 mile per gallon pickup truck. I use it to drive to work (back when I had a job-me loosing mah job, well, that was Obama’s fault too) but cain’t seem to find anything to pick up. You can call me stupid to my face but what I am is a upstanding member of the tea party and the Westboro Baptist Church and I represent ‘merica at it’s finest cause I got good common sense and all and I don’t fool around with facts cause they’re commanist. Obama speaking at the Vet Convention is a photo-op only. It has nothing to do with his respect for our troops.

If Obama respected veterans, he’d give future vetarans (our current men and women in uniform) all the support, funds, equipment and reinforcements they need to get their jobs done and get home. As it is, he continues to give *just enough* which continues to put our American soldiers at risk.

Shame on this two-faced, attention-seeking, publicity-grabbing president. I’m ashamed of the *leader* of the free world.

OK, Left, then with all the “economic stimulus” Obozo has pumped into our rapidly sinking economy tell me then why unemployment is still around 10%? Or 20% if you count the ones who have given up and run their unemployment benefits out. Explain to me why he would give AMNESTY to ILLEGAL immigrants who freely admit their status, even file suit against a state who is trying desperately to stem the tide? Or how about those two wars he PROMISED in his campaign to get us out of? Gitmo still open? Yes sir it is.

He is oblivious to the desires of the populance because he believes that his vision of a socialist America is worth any price to accomplish- even the political career of those in his own party.

I pray that the damage he has done in his short tenure can be reversed. He is attacking the institutions that made our country the greatest of its era in the world. He is leading us down a sharp decline.

And no, liberals, disagreeing with his world-view does not make me a racist, just a patriot and a father who cares about the future of his children.

We have a great system of checks and balances in our country, and the Republicans will reign in much of Obama’s excesses after the November elections, just as the Dems did to the Republicans back in 2006.

OK, Left, who had control of Congress the last 4 years of Bush and the last two….can you say DEMOCRATS? Did THEY address illegal immigration? No sir.

So Bush put us in Gitmo…..why can’t Obozo get us out? It should be relatively easy to do if Bush could accomplish it.

Iraq and Afghanistan….notice you left those out. I believe Obozo asked for MORE troops for Afghanistan and is still waffling on getting us out of Iraq. And as far as war crimes go, why would Obozo insist on CONTINUING a war that allegedly begat those crimes we speak of? Why not pack up the equipment and men and bring them home instead of blindly flailing around with no clear objective?

Unemployment? He’s had two years to at least SHOW he is making progress in that sector…..not even a few percentage points. We’re still near double digits. And no relief any time soon. And the deficit is going UP, not down. Bush has been gone awhile…can’t continue to blame him. But then again, that’s what libs like yourself do best, blame somebody else.

Arizona law unconstitutional and racist? All they did was try to do what our Federal Government is SUPPOSED to do and refuses to because it doesn’t want to alienate the “Hispanic Base”. Doesn’t matter a rat’s butt that these people are here illegally, let’s not p–s anybody off by sending them back from whence they came.

Keep whistling past those graves old buddy and keep your head in the sand. I hope your still on here in November when those bums get thrown out. It’s going to happen. And it will be interesting to hear your excuse for why. Very interesting.

jonica gay, bigotry has nothing to do with it.

Obama is a sorry President and would be that way even if he was white, just as George Bush would have been if he were black.

As far as the illegals go, they are just that, ILLEGAL. Wanting them gone is not bigotry. I have no problem with anybody coming here and making a living, as long as they are here LEGALLY, either applying for citizenship or having a green card and paying taxes and SS just like me. These people that leach off the rest of us are not only a slap in our face, but a slap in the face of all the immigrants who ARE here legally.

Anytime anybody has anything bad to say about our current Socialist President, the race card is played. “You all are only against him because he’s black…” There’s your bigotry right there.

Left, I can tell you know you are on the losing side of the argument now….making snide remarks about my ability to count, and quibbling about a few months more or less that Obama has been in office…..the Dems have been in office since 2007 and the only thing Pelosi and gang have accomplished is to balloon the deficit to record levels and put the national debt to a point where our great great grandchildren will be paying on it. Oh yes, and buy, cajole, and ramrod through a healthcare bill that they EXEMPTED themselves from,,,,,gotta wonder about that.

You still have no answer on Iraq or Afghanistan. If Bush could get us in so easily, why can’t the “Messiah” get us out? Just asking.

Illegal immigrants do not belong here. They are just that, ILLEGAL. If they want to come here then there are plenty of legal ways to do it, but they choose not to, and our Federal government, who is headed by the current President, CHOOSES NOT to do anything about it.

Gitmo? Still didn’t answer me on that other than to say “Bush put us there.” Well, if it was so easy for Bush to “put us there” why can’t your “Messiah” get us out just as easily? Isn’t that where a lot of the “war crimes” you speak of were committed? Why would your champion leave it open? Can’t he issue and executive order closing it down?

Go ahead, pick out something trivial such as a misspelled word or an arithmetical error in my post to hit me with. That seems to be all you have in your arsenal. And it isn’t much.

Mike Murphy, the successful and shrewd Republican media strategist, is a heretic within his own party. Sensitive to the near-universal reverence Republicans of all ages pay to the legacy and presidency of Ronald Reagan, Murphy bluntly warns his fellow GOPers that — given the profound, and continuing, demographic changes over the past three decades — Ronald Reagan would have a tough time beating Jimmy Carter today.

Consider this reality. In his 1980 race against President Carter, when Gov. Reagan won 56 percent of the nation’s white vote, whites comprised 88 percent of the total national electorate. Simply stated, Reagan’s 1980 share of the white vote alone constituted 49.3 percent of all voters. This meant that for the Gipper to achieve his overall 51 percent majority he simply had to earn the support of one out of seven non-white voters — which is what he did.

But by 2008, enormous changes were taking place. The white share of the national vote had fallen to 74 percent. So Reagan’s 56 percent share of that group would have translated into just 41.2 percent of all voters. Demographic shifts, by themselves, would have subtracted more than 8 percentage points from Ronald Reagan’s 1980 victory margin.
shieldsmug

Mike Murphy uses facts such as these as a reminder that nobody can live in the past and succeed politically. Having worked for a couple of dozen Republican candidates — including John McCain, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger — Murphy has real credibility when he warns his party that anti-immigrant rhetoric of the variety heard from — mostly losing — Republican candidates in 2008 and 2010 could doom the party of Abraham Lincoln and Reagan to permanent minority status.

Consider California, where Murphy now lives. In 2008, whites were just 63 percent of the total state vote. African-American, Latino, Asian and other totaled 37 percent. By Murphy’s calculations, unless Republicans can dramatically improve their following among those groups of voters (whom Barack Obama carried collectively by more than 75 percent), Republican candidates will be required to win a minimum two out of three California white votes in order to win a statewide election. In 2008, John McCain received 46 percent of the votes of white Californians.

California is a case study of what can happen. Between 1948 and 1992, the Republicans carried the Golden State in every presidential election — except for LBJ’s 1964 landslide. But since then, the Democrats have carried California in five consecutive presidential elections. In a reminder of political consequences, Republicans should remember that Pete Wilson used menacing TV spots featuring footage of illegal immigrants to win re-election while endorsing Proposition 187, which banned undocumented immigrants from receiving public services, including public education or medical care.

As 2008 could very well turn out, that 1994 campaign provided a short-term political advantage to Wilson and the GOP. But two years later, two committed civil-rights Republicans on the national ticket, Bob Dole and Jack Kemp, won barely one out of five Latino votes in California, while losing the state. Since Proposition 187, no California Republican has won a U.S. Senate race.

Even more alarming for Republicans, the white share of the overall U.S. population is predicted by Census projections to drop to 60 percent by 2020. Another cautionary note: The lion’s share of the Latino growth over the next generation will not come from immigration but rather from the children of past immigrants who already live here.

In fact, Democratic pollster Peter Hart predicts that Texas — the reddest Republican of the nation’s big states — will, because of its fast-growing Hispanic population, by 2024 — just four presidential elections away — have become a Democratic blue state.

Over the remaining three and a half months of the 2010 campaign, the future competitiveness of the Republican Party nationally may well hinge on whether GOP candidates can resist in these difficult economic times the cheap demagoguery of immigrant-blaming and instead seek common cause with the new and ever-changing American electorate.

you don’t ever see much talk about the dixiecrat issue… there is still a small fringe that are still mad at Lyndon Johnson… which help explains part of the Tea Party boom just so happening to pop up as the demographics of this nation shift away from the world that the angry white middle aged men nearing retirement remember.

30 years of economic decline via the Reagan revolution can create a lot of desperate angry people. Just ask people questions about the health care bill or stimulus. For people so concerned about health care the Republican base is shockingly ill informed about RomneyCare; ditto for the stimulus and macro economy as a whole…

These aren’t racial issues per say… but more demographic shifts which are happening at the start of the new media era when fox news and talk radio are beamed into homes and well funded think tanks spit out sounds good feels good talking points. With a million dollars and some well targeted bullet points you can exploit the decline of the middle class and fears about the future to make people believe up is down and black is white… center right Democrats are Socialists…

“The citizen of Oceania is not allowed to know anything of the tenets of the other two philosphies, but he is taught to execrate them as barbarous outrages upon morality and common sense. Actually, the three philosophies are barely distinguishable.”

Besides, what does his approval ratings have to do with the Veterans? Georgia didn’t vote for him. The funny thing about you hypocrites, you took all the money that was offered (Stimulus Pkg.) without blinking an eye. Remember, Reagan numbers were terrible in 1982. Clinton numbers were terrible, and he lost Congress in 94. Guess what? They both went on to get re-elected in landslides! The mid-terms brings out Independents. That’s why the President has been trying to be “bi-partisan”. After the mid-terms, win, lose or draw, watch how he changes. If you think he’s a Socialist now, just wait! LOL

Members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in U.S. history (the ‘poorest’ multimillionaire, Condoleezza Rice, has an Exxon oil tanker named after her).
First president in U.S. history to have all 50 states of the Union simultaneously go bankrupt.
Presided over the biggest corporate stock market fraud of any market in any country in the history of the world.

All-time U.S. (and world) record holder for most corporate campaign donations.
My biggest lifetime campaign contributor presided over one of the largest corporate bankruptcy frauds in world history (Kenneth Lay, former CEO of Enron Corporation).
Spent more money on polls and focus groups than any president in U.S. history.
First president in U.S. history to unilaterally attack a sovereign nation against the will of the United Nations and the world community.
First president to run and hide when the U.S. came under attack (and then lied saying the enemy had the code to Air Force 1)
First U.S. president to establish a secret shadow government.
Took the biggest world sympathy for the U.S. after 9/11, and in less than a year made the U.S. the most resented country in the world (possibly the biggest diplomatic failure in U.S. and world history).
With a policy of ‘disengagement’ created the most hostile Israeli-Palestine relations in at least 30 years.
Fist U.S. president in history to have a majority of the people of Europe (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and stability.
First U.S. president in history to have the people of South Korea more threatened by the U.S. than their immediate neighbor, North Korea.
Changed US policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts.

Failed to fulfill my pledge to get Osama Bin Laden ‘dead or alive.’
Failed to capture the anthrax killer who tried to murder the leaders of our country at the United States Capital building. After 18 months I have no leads and zero suspects.
In the 18 months following the 9/11 attacks I have successfully prevented any public investigation into the biggest security failure in the history of the United States.
Removed more freedoms and civil liberties for Americans than any other president in U.S. history.
In a little over two years created the most divided country in decades, possibly the most divided the U.S. has ever been since the Civil War.
Entered office with the strongest economy in U.S. history and in less than two years turned every single economic category heading straight down.

Roy Barnes can duck the President if wants that’s typical Georgia politics as usual. The sad part is Roy is trying to gain the support of a constituency that will not vote for him simply because the Rethuglicans have been successful in defining Democrats in this state even though I can think of nothing significant that Perdue has not for this state beside running it into the ground. Southern whites do not like Obama and the reasons are obvious people can say well he is a so called liberal, or something else stupid and ignorant like calling him a Socialist so that they don’t have to say their true reason. Run Roy Run, you still will not get the votes of those you are seeking and some people simply enjoy voting against their own interests.

TO: no longer Republican: First of all, I am not a dumb a…; secondly, I did not say I was going to vote Republican. I said I was not voting for those Demoncratics who have turned their back on OUR PRESIDENT. Yes, I realize what it means to Georgia and the USA to have Republicans run Georgia. I understand. I understand that a house divided can not stand… I’m trying to send a message that we EXPECT the ones who want our vote, to respect and support Mr. Obama. Whether they agree with everything or not. I don’t agree with Everything that Mr. O stands on. However, being a candidate for the Governor of Georgia….and Barnes leaves town… I don’t think so. Do you really think that the Democrats running for office should leave town and not want to be associated with the Pres of the US.. You think about. What Message are they sending? Remember Zell Miller was a democrat and changed to a Republican and so did Nathan Deal.. We really don’t know what we are getting. I admit I had more faith in Mr. Barnes. I had been advocating and promoting him for election. (unpaid) trying to be a good citizen. But I stand by what I say..If he is ashame to associate with Mr. Pres. O…then I am ashame of him.
To: George Pete: Just because someone misuses a “word” doesn’t mean they are not intelligent and it certainly does not reflect that they are “black”.. And just because people vote for Mr. O. doesn’t mean that they are BLACK…….. MAYBE YOU CAN BE OF GREAT ASSISTANCE IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.

It is good and well that a sitting President addresses Disabled Veterans of America. But, why is it some are being denied access to the event because they did not get invited? I find it hard to deny access to a venue for disabled vets because they are not part of the organizational hierarchy. Are they still not disabled veterans? The President is THEIR CiC, too.

Actually, none of the Democrats running for office should be onstage with the President. It is, afterall, a program for Disabled Veterans of America, not the Democratic Party.

Well, I see the “Blame Bush” boys are hard at work. I guess that is a democrat ploy: since you can’t defend your leader, heap blame on the previous administration.

The economic woes this nation is experiencing are the responsibility of the democrats, beginning with FDR. His “New Deal” bespoke the idea that government is great and more government is better government. He truly started the “entitlement” mentality that exists today. FDR didn’t bring the country out of the depression – World War II did.

Moving on to LBJ, we find the “entitled” people of this country making great gains under the “Great Society”. Johnson’s accomplishments (if you want to call them that) were numerous. Unfortunately, as well as cosring this nation money it didn’t have, LBJ destroyed the black family. Welfare payments made to “single mothers” made marriage and the family a financial liability. The unforseen fruit of the “Great Society” are the violent crimes committed by blacks (often against other blacks) in the streets of America today. The lack of a father in black households combined with poor or no parenting skills are a direct result of the “Great Society”.

Black children who want to study hard in school and achieve educational excellence are taunted by their peers and accused of “acting white”. This form of racism can only be learned within their families, and does great harm to black children.

Since the majority of blacks fail to see the opportunity that this country offers smart, educated people and, for the most part, do not avail themselves of the educations available to them, they look to an Obama to give them that which they have not earned. The problem with that lies in one simple fact: somebody has to produce, manufacture, plant, cultivate, sell or service something in order for taxes to be paid for redistribution. And the working folks who pay the taxes are growing increasingly tired of producing to support the non-productive, both black and white.

Unfortunately for the producers and the non-productive, Obama’s plans have little to do with what is good in America, but rather the destruction of this once great nation. He is well on his way to success.

So, black folks, stay on the democrat plantation and do what the “Massa” tell you to do, “Vote democrat”.

And, white folks, continue to impress people with your non-racists views and vote liberal democrat.

The end is near . . .

“But, why is it some are being denied access to the event because they did not get invited?”

There is a simple answer to that question. Obama will only appear in very carefully managed venues. The people appearing with him must be both black and white, and they must not give any appearance of being a threat at these events by asking him any controversial questions. They have to appear as an attentive, almost worshipful audience offering only kudos to his greatness.

All of this bickering back and forth is useless and it is not going to matter in this years election cycle. There were a great deal of voters in this state (who are not into politics and only usually vote in presidential elections) took a chance a believed Obama when he said he was a moderate. His actions since taking office have made them embarrassed and angry. This silent majority will come out to the polls in Nov and send the President a message. They will go into the booth and punch a straight republican ticket. They will not know anything about the candidates and the Dems are going to suffer. All state wide elected offices will be held by Republicans and at least one if not two of the Democratic congressmen will be booted out of office.

If you do not believe the above statement then put your money where you mouth (typewriter) is and make a bet Any takers?

A lot of people took a chance on Mr. Obama, and they have serious buyer’s remorse. He isn’t a post-racial president, he isn’t a centrist, he isn’t different than any other politician, and the fact that he fooled so many people into voting for him, is indicative of his ability to give a rousing speech. But he hasn’t a clue how to govern … and has never gotten out of campaign mode. He has forgotten – or perhaps never realized — he is the president of all the people. Not just liberals. Not just democrats. He is going to get a loud message in November about the cost of flaunting the will of the American people. I just “hope” he can learn from it.

obama is a lame, unrepentive organizer that’s actually very good at talking a game he doesn’t understand or has the ability to play. He lies almost everytime his lips are moving.

The veterans should protest him speaking or coming to Georgia for that matter. His delay in sending troops to Afghanistan, when a real man that knows how to lead soldiers (Gen. McChrytal) requested them to help support the troops in the heat of battle. There is no telling how many innocent, brave American soldiers were killed as a result of obama’s inaction and impotent ability to perform his duty.

STAND IN THE STREETS AND PROTEST THIS SOCIALISM/DICTATOR DRIVEN IDIOT. HE DOESN’T SUPPORT IN ACTION OUR VETERANS….ONLY THROUGH HIS B.S. HE SPEWS EVERYTIME HE OPENS HIS MOUTH. “15 million Americans are out of work, and a further 10 million cannot find

Millions of American families are having trouble paying their mortgage and putting food

Any comprehensive amnesty for illegal aliens is just plain wrong and goes against

Why are you letting these Americans down by supporting amnesty?”

You want someone successful, like the honorable Senator Johnny Isakson, that has voted for the people’s wishes of this great state and has done a superb, honest and ethical job. I am amazed how so many people are pointing fingers at each other. The truth of the matter is when the democrats are in office the right side point out the flaws and when the republicans are in office the left side point out their flaws. We are all Americans and we all suffer when either side makes a bad decision and believe me every president makes good and bad decisions that is part of being a leader. To all that is making this a race issue and are making derogatory comments are truly not advocates of democracy. What needs to happen for America to get better is we agree to disagree but be respectful. America has issues but with all of us working together these issues can be resolved. The comments on this blog sound as if we are in 1960. If you do not agree with the president that is okay, but be very careful with your words because some of you are committing treason. While I am delighted that the President is FINALLY honoring disabled vets – there is a not a more worthy group in the country-I think the White House is reading the polls and watching the Democrats slide into oblivion. I don’t support this President, nor ANY of his attempts to hijack the economy via the takeover of Wall Street, GM and/or the healthcare plan.

I think the President is an avowed Socialist and is a clear and present danger to our economic system and American liberties. And NO this is not a black or white thing -this is a GREEN thing. There are currently nearly 15 million people either out of work or under employed. Getting our economy back on track and producing jobs needs to be JOB ONE! Small business folks need to be able to hire people.

How many jobs are going to be produced when they are staring at the Bush tax cuts expiring, healthcare costs for employees going through the roof, and getting access to capital (as in loans to purchase new inventory or buy that new truck for the company) is nearly impossible. Nobody in their right minds are going to hire facing those challenges.

The White House doesn’t get it. Nobody in this administration has EVER worked in small business (the source of nearly 85% of all new job growth). Roy Barnes is no dummy and neither are the people of this state. Nobody wants to be associated with this guy and/or his programs.Georgia democrats are walking a very difficult line distancing themselves from the President and his agenda, and I predict this state will probably post record Republican gains come November. I don’t think they care. Their purpose is to install a new system of government. The only way that is possible is to collapse the existing system. After they achieve that, they will begin the move to a Marxist/Socialist system wherein we shall all be equally destitute. Thus will come the “change you can believe in” with no “hope” in heaven of a future for our children and grandchildren.

kate…..just like a little child!! You just can’t accept responsiblity for your lame dumb”a” vote for obama and the fact that he can’t handle the job. He’s just a puppet getting ready to fall due to his inability to get the job done. Not what you claim – blamed because he’s black. Take your little toys and go home and cry in private in the bedroom. No real American wants to hear how blacks can’t do the job because they’re just being blamed by whites. Again, the fact is obama is incapable of doing the job and is less than a real man for lying to the American citizens that he could and would.

IMPEACH OBAMA 2010!! LOOK FOR THE TEA PARTY. THEY’RE COMIN AND HELL’S COMIN WITH EM! ALL IN THE NAME OF TAKING BACK AMERICA AND PUTTING BACK ON TRACK THROUGH REAL LEADERS WHO CAN LEAD.

i can’t say anything that already hasn’t been said…i am a soldier, i for one like to see how thing are going to end reather then make asumpions….he is the commander an Chief and i respect that. We may not agree on all thing and that ok, but this country and our future depend on all of us…i serve with both black, white, and every kind of ethic back ground you and think of. When you are in a fire fight that is the last thing on your mind.( i will die for him and he will die for me)on team on fight. I do know this as long as we can be seperated by race gender or and other catogory them want be able to win any fight. and time in our history every war ever social issue the mass had to come together despite out differance and fight as one to win. The Patiort act took away your rights as citizen and other law like that. have any notice that anytime some need to be pass it always base on race or protecting your from some unknown evil force. I think at this point in History we are our on worse enemy. wheather you are a racist or not this our house and at the end of the day we have to clean it up and shape the future for our children because i don’t think any one or race is going any where. Some you used God in statement to justifie what you were saying how crazy can we get. God allows us the right to chose our on path and thing that we do we have to pay the price at judgement time. If God will turst us with that responsibility why does man have a problem with it. we are in tuff time and everyone want to blame some for there problems all i as is just look at the whole picture and not be so close minded and get your new resource for differant place. most of the people on this site that are writting these replys are not rich or were born rich…we are just citizen that what the best for our families….some days i wish is could close my eyes and judge people by the way they treat me. I guess that will never happen because T.V may sure that race alway play part in what ever is going on…..right, wrong or indefferant a nation divided against it’s self will not stand……what is color but a shade…one our down fall in the future will be the color issue if we don’t resolve soon….Obama i suport you and you have done some good thing and you have mad some bad decisions that is to be expected of any leader… You have the will to except those bad one and learn that is the mark of a good….on behalf of the soldier i know we welcome you to Georgia…Have a blessed day..forgive the misspell word i was in a rush will do better next time. i just hope you get the meaning behind what i am tring to say. I wonder why Jim consistently eludes to President Obama being the first African-American president when in fact he’s biracial. It’s such a shame we as Americans can’t get pass color and focus on the important issues to better the country. I wouldn’t be so quick to infer because you consider President Obama to be black that all black people will vote for him or others associated with him. That’s such a small minded and closed statement. If I applied Jim’s theory to the governor’s race, it would suggest that Karen Handel who is a white female will garner all of the white female votes in the state of Georgia.

The only thing I hate is the way America is being destroyed from within by the Marxist/Socialist Obama and his cohorts. I do not want America to be forced into poverty by these people. I want the best for my children and grandchildren and not what is in the offing. I want the best for your family, too. Unfortunately, unless Obama and the progressive liberals are removed, neither your family nor mine will know the freedom, security and relative prosperity that we have enjoyed. Even the poorest among us enjoy a higher standard of living than most of the rest of the world. Capitalism is what has made that possible.

Has it crossed anyone’s mind, that maybe these people just have other scheduled meetings that take precedence over smudging and rubbing elbows with our President. Two are campaigning (IN AN ELECTION YEAR), one is helping his daughter move to college (Sorry, but my kid’s the most important thing to me too), and one is in Washington (DOING HIS JOB!). So, maybe I’m the lost one in this story….I don’t know. But, it just seems like these people that will be absent HAVE A LIFE! Coupla facts facing us…Georgia needs Roy Barnes if we are to have any hope of getting out of the mess that ‘The Goober’ has managed to get us in, along with his buddy Geedubya and the rest of the Repugs. But Roy understands that if he’s to win he’s got to navigate a very fine line. The ‘base’ of the Repugs will never vote for a Democrat so he’s got to win a good majority of whoever’s left that, objectively, can pass as an Independent, and he’s got to make sure that all Democrats realize the reality of a Democrat winning in this state in these times is a tough chore.

I’m not all that happy with much of what Obama has done, even though I really believe that much of his ‘failings’ have been due to an intransigent, vile Republican Party that would rather see the country fail if it meant they get to regain power and the keys to the Treasury. Sure Obama has held onto too many of Bush/Cheney’s policies…and much of my disappointment has been that most of the Bush/Cheney administration isn’t in jail by now…and, finally, the DNC has all but abandoned Howard Dean’s ‘50 State Strategy’ that breathed life into an otherwise moribund Democratic Party in Georgia because the jerk Rahm Emanuel said so…but I still know what’s at stake.

So Roy, you do what you have to do cause in the end, ‘real Democrats’ along with those that actually give a s**t about this state and know that Republicans will be the death of everything this Country should stand for if we don’t keep them in the minority from now on, will be with you.

It probably has not crossed their minds. To some, unless the expected homage is paid to Obama, it makes them suspect. I have moved a daughter into college and realize what an important day that was for both of us. Although, I do not vote in his district, I would not be one of his supporters anyway. I do, however, fully understand his electing to put family first in this situation. The candidates have scheduled appearances long before they even knew The Great One would be here, and are obligated to make those appearances. Life does not cease merely because Obama decides to bless us with his presense.

Not knowing ANYTHING about this bill I asked my doctor. He was not positive regarding the healthcare bill. In his opinion this bill will cause alot of doctors to retire early. He says his operating cost are going up constantly. With salaries, rent, utilities, and the expensive equipment he must have to treat his patients. The cost of this bill will take money from medicare and decrease the fees doctors charge. Alot of doctors will refuse to see patients with this type coverage. As a result of this the few doctors that will accept patents, waiting rooms will be packed and waiting times will be long. Also the majority of us are going to be paying for healthcare for those who will NOT work. But thats liberal politics for you!

I have read your post several times and think I finally have the gist of it. Maybe you can post again and tell us exactly “which most things have improved slightly in just over a year”. The economy, unemployment, real estate market, auto sales, home foreclosures, etc. is not better. The one thing that is better is the personal debt owed by individuals: it is significantly less. The reason that it is less is because responsible people are paying off their debts and not incurring new debt. The less responsible are not being extended credit. This is not something that Obama made better intentionally, but rather because no one trusts the economy or these idiots in D.C.

•Became president after losing the popular vote by over 500,000 votes, with the help of my father’s appointments to the Supreme Court.

Accomplishments As President

•Dissolved more international treaties than any president in U.S. history. •My presidency is the most secretive and unaccountable of any in U.S. history. •Members of my cabinet are the richest of any administration in U.S. history (the ‘poorest’ multimillionaire, Condoleezza Rice, has an Exxon oil tanker named after her). •First president in U.S. history to have all 50 states of the Union simultaneously go bankrupt. •Presided over the biggest corporate stock market fraud of any market in any country in the history of the world. •First president in U.S. history to order a U.S. attack and military occupation of a sovereign nation. •Created the largest government department bureaucracy in the history of the United States. •Set the all-time record for biggest annual budget spending increases, more than any president in U.S. history. •First president in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the human rights commission. •First president in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S. from the elections monitoring board. •Removed more checks and balances, and have the least amount of congressional oversight than any presidential administration in U.S. history. •Rendered the entire United Nations irrelevant. •Withdrew from the World Court of Law. •Refused to allow inspectors access to U.S. prisoners of war and by default no longer abide by the Geneva Conventions. •First president in U.S. history to refuse United Nations election inspectors (during the 2002 U.S. elections). •All-time U.S. (and world) record holder for most corporate campaign donations. •My biggest lifetime campaign contributor presided over one of the largest corporate bankruptcy frauds in world history (Kenneth Lay, former CEO of Enron Corporation). •Spent more money on polls and focus groups than any president in U.S. history. •First president in U.S. history to unilaterally attack a sovereign nation against the will of the United Nations and the world community. •First president to run and hide when the U.S. came under attack (and then lied saying the enemy had the code to Air Force 1) •First U.S. president to establish a secret shadow government. •Took the biggest world sympathy for the U.S. after 9/11, and in less than a year made the U.S. the most resented country in the world (possibly the biggest diplomatic failure in U.S. and world history). •With a policy of ‘disengagement’ created the most hostile Israeli-Palestine relations in at least 30 years. •Fist U.S. president in history to have a majority of the people of Europe (71%) view my presidency as the biggest threat to world peace and stability. •First U.S. president in history to have the people of South Korea more threatened by the U.S. than their immediate neighbor, North Korea. •Changed US policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts. •Set all-time record for number of administration appointees who violated U.S. law by not selling huge investments in corporations bidding for government contracts. •Failed to fulfill my pledge to get Osama Bin Laden ‘dead or alive.’ •Failed to capture the anthrax killer who tried to murder the leaders of our country at the United States Capital building. The really sad, hypocritical thing about what you people are hating on the President of the United States about is that if he was a GOPer Republican you would be singing his praises to the world. Hypocrites. Obama has to put up with GOPer bozos in Congress who halt any and all good legislation which would HELP us get out of this recession. GOPer bozos only do it to make him look bad, but they are really making themselves look bad. They’d sell this country to Communist China (and have over the past 15 years while they were in control) to make the democrats look bad. Low lifes = GOPer bozos.

Do you know who the President was prior to George W. Bush? Do you know which political party he was affiliated with? Do you know how long he held office? George W. Bush was the President for eight years prior to Obama taking office. By your figure of 15 years, that leaves 7 years unaccounted for. Account for them.

You’re just frothing idiots who use caps lock to get attention. Listen to this: America elected a black president. You’re just going to have to accept it. White and Black people elected this fine man who is doing the best he can with an economy the republicans wrecked. It’s going to take some time. But if you still want to defend Gilligan, remember, no new jobs were created by giving tax cuts to the wealthy. That money does NOT trickle down. They kept it. He wanted to privatize social security, something you morans will need at some point. He got us in two wars. Have you ever been in a room with a soldiers mother who has just had her sons body retuned without a head? Not a shipping mistake, by the way. Bush did that. If you want to call yourselves conservatives (although I do not believe your thoughts are that coherent), fine, supporters of family values (mom stays home, barefoot and pregnant), fine. But know that you are being used, that your tax money was used to make the rich far richer by the republican party you defend so vociferously. They suckered you in, Bubbas. republicans don’t care about your religion or your family values or even gay marriage. These are just flashy talking points. They care about power. Maybe everyone does. But the republicans have bloodied a lot of backs getting theirs. Mainly the backs of the people who support them.

Wow! the nastiness in the comment section is mindboggling. Note that most do not talk about substance…just name calling.
1)I think our president is in over his head and has surrounded himself with people who don’t understand business. What works on paper very often doesn’t translate to the real world.
2)I wish our president was white so the whole race thing could just go away. He’s making big changes but real debate on substance goes to racial issues almost always.
3)I think my money is best spent by me not the government.
4)I wish the government spent only the money we take in (just like you do at your house)
5)Those rich people create jobs for the rest of us. Thank you George for taking a huge risk and founding a company that allows me a very good living.

Billy Jo;

Clinton “accidently” bombed one of China’s embassies – at that time they were still our enemy. In 1995 The GOPer Republicans gained the majority in Congress, and that’s when all hell broke loose. Deals brokered with China (cheap labor = richer CEOs to give to corrupt GOPers for campaigning), bank laws changed to the banks’ favor (to the mess we have now) again richer CEOs = more campaign contributions, etc. to Republicans. Who cared about the rest of us who weren’t wealthy? Not them, that’s for sure! The same thing’s about to happen if those GOPers get relected to finish out their corrupt practices.

A scheduling conflict will prevent me from meeting with President Obama during his visit.

Just remember Georgians: the Republicans want to starve puppies, take Social Security away from the elderly, and put African Americans back into slavery.

Toodles !

@Carl

You make statements about President Bush as if they were facts but you fail to back it up with supporting data. I’m sorry, but your Mother’s statement is not exactly the evidence that would be convincing.

Instead of answering my questions, you launched another attack at both President Bush and all Republicans. That is so typical of a democrat with no answers.

When in doubt, use the race card or blame the previous administration. It works every time !

Our President is half-white, and was raised by his white mother and white grandparents – which makes all the world of difference in his outlook of this nation.

Carl,

Well said. The GOP followers are truly “Party First!” in their priorities. Their faithful don’t care about what’s best for this nation going forward; they care only that the people in power have (R) beside their names. How sad for all of us.

You’re right. Bedtime approaches and I must depart. I’m fairly sure I know what the “A” is short for – and it isn’t “arrogant”!

Billy Jo – and you and others like yourself make the same type of statements about our current President with no facts to back them up. You tend to get your facts from Rush, Sean and friends – all tilted towards the rabid republican right. There is no middle ground for you. I think that someone who witnessed a thing would make better evidence than all the conjectures you keep throwing around. I researched Bush in 1999 and did not like at all what I found. None of you GOPers did, and you allowed him to be elected illegally by corrupt means.

Billy Joe Poteet,

My Daddy was a fighter pilot in the Alabama Air National Guard during the years of Bush’s alleged service there, and he never saw the Bush boy neither. He does have something that GWB never produced, though: photographs of him with his plane in the tarmac with his crew, his buddies, all in their flight suits, ON DUTY during that time. How come GWB nor any of his crew never produced a photo? Just sayin’.

Billy Joe Poteet— NEVER give up the fight to exploit these fools who continue to follow this worthless piece of s–t we have as president.

He will be a one hit wonder and will be gone with the wind.

So will Nancy Pitloosly and the rest of the crapola we have running the ship.

I’ll be back to give em hell also.

After 200 years of corrupt, one-party rule in Georgia, it took an imbecile like Roy Barnes just 4 years in office of pandering to special interests to hand the keys over to the Republican Party.

I don’t believe Georgians are ready to revisit the past and put a clown back in office they kicked out in 2002.

Looking over the state budget, where will Barnes get the money to give our teachers raises?

Where will Barnes get the money to create all these government jobs, retooling buildings and state infrastructure?

What exactly did Barnes do to “create” hundreds of thousands of jobs during his administration?

Times are certainly tough, Georgia. Vote with your heads and your wallets, not your emotions.

If you love ‘free’ medicine (like Obama wants you to have),you’ll love high taxes, reduction of health services, the inability to keep your favourite doctor, and the rationing of health care-especially if you’re elderly and disabled! Take it from a European-born American who knows.

After reading these comments, it is obvious that thinking people should be thinking about how to get out – and stay out – of GA… If there are any still there.

No need for a crystal ball to see that GA is well and truly flocked.

HCo, I totally agree with you. So many people actually forgot that Obama walked into a mess that he thought was ABC….P, only to find out that its A-Z and then some!! Plus, someone mentioned that Obama wants to spread AIDS through the Armed Services by allowing Gas to serve openly. Well, I disagree with the ignorant, super Conservative, supposedly Christian approach to this. I pose a question. When did Father God ever penalize your ability to choose “sin”? If that were the case, He would not allow people to get divorced, high, drunk, steal, and so on. God simply does not take away our individual right to choose based on free will. Therefore, how can we as humans take the right to choose away from our fellow brothers and sisters? I am by no means saying I agree with every choice we make, as neither does God, but denying the right to choose only showcases the insecurity, hatred, prejudice, fear, lack of soberness or sound-minded living that the God of the Bible does not like. What He does do is let us see that the choices we made are NOT right, for our good, in our best interests, or viable in the long haul, yet He heaps love on us, thereby drawing us back to the right road. If we would learn how to do that….
