Your morning jolt: On TV, Karen Handel hits Nathan Deal as ‘a corrupt relic of Washington’

Republican candidate for governor Karen Handel makes use of Sarah Palin’s endorsement in her first TV ad in the Republican runoff for government – which also condemns rival Nathan Deal as “a corrupt relic of Washington D.C.”

“One carries a purse, the other carries baggage,” the 30-second ad begins.

The TV spot follows on the heels of an AJC report of federal grand jury interest in a meeting called by Deal in the hope of preserving his business with the state.

Handel spokesman Dan McLagan says the ad is targeted at metro Atlanta, and describes the airtime buy as “big.”

The script:

Male voiceover: One carries a purse. The other carries baggage.

One whom Sarah Palin says has cut government, and is the true conservative.

Or the other, who added trillions to our national debt.

One a conservative reformer. One a corrupt relic of Washington D.C.

Karen Handel is Georgia’s strong conservative. Impeccable integrity. Our thrilling, vibrant future. Karen Handel. Bring it on.

The ad by Fred Davis incorporates the black, white and red tones of Handel’s single “Lipstick” ad in the GOP primary.

It’s also the first major use that Handel’s been able to make of the Palin endorsement – which arrived late in the primary, after the former secretary of state’s slim finances had already been committed.

From the other side of the aisle, Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor Carol Porter is attempting to draft behind Handel and her attacks on Deal.

The following appeared on Porter’s Facebook page on Wednesday:

My short-version:) assessment of the corruption story: The incumbent Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle (against whom I am running) and Nathan Deal brought Bart… Graham, the Revenue Commissioner into the office of the Lt. Gov. (that is your… office by the way) to allegedly strong-arm him into stopping Graham’s efforts to privatize the DOR inspections which would have quite possibly slowed Nathan’s 1.5 million of no bid state money for his company.

Graham thought his ideas would save the taxpayers’ money. Cagle and Deal allegedly didn’t like Graham’s suggestion. Somehow, in the Senate, over which Cagle presides and is the President, the money in question got put back in the budget again.

Deal says he sent an email asking Cagle not to do it. He did. The little fact he keeps leaving out? It was an hour after the vote had been taken, :) Really. They thought we wouldn’t check? By the way, Nathan Deal has used some of his funds to donate to Cagle.

Officially, National Girlfriends Day isn’t until Sunday. That said, it is always a good time to review Political Rule No. 525b: “Anything that two consenting adults do in private, without witnesses, can be explained away as something innocent and misunderstood. Unless the lights are out.”

From my AJC colleague Cameron McWhirter:

State Sen. Preston Smith, a Republican candidate for attorney general, had an extramarital affair with a woman whom he hired to work in his Senate office in 2003 and 2004, according to transcripts of Smith’s testimony in his 2009 divorce….

Atlanta attorney Charles Medlin, who represented Michelle Smith in the divorce,… said Smith’s wife discovered the relationship when she arrived as his state senate campaign headquarters one night. She found Smith’s car in the lot, but all the lights were out in the office. She went inside, turned on the lights and discovered Smith and the woman.

“I don’t know what possible campaign work a politician could be doing in the dark,” Medlin said.

***

But pillowtalk isn’t the only thing happening around Smith, a state senator from Rome. For years, Smith was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and opposed a House GOP effort to allow the death penalty to be imposed without the unanimous consent of a jury.

Austin Rhodes, a conservative talk show host in Augusta on WGAC (580AM) has published a letter from Barry Fleming, legal counsel to the House, to Sam Olens, Smith’s Republican runoff rival:

Sam,

It was House bill 185 in the 2007-2008 session. It passed the House in 2007. When the bill passed the House it went to the Senate requiring a 10-2 vote of the jury in favor of the death penalty to allow the judge to then decide to impose the death penalty. (The bill was introduced requiring a 9-3 in order to give the judge the option of applying the death penalty but was amended to 10-2 in the legislative process.) The bill always required a separate 12-0 vote on guilt first.

When the bill passed over to the Senate side Preston Smith killed the bill in his committee. He was chairman of the judiciary committee. (He intentionally waited until the Republicans senators left the committee room to go to other meetings in the last few hectic days of the session, and then called for a vote on the bill while democrats held a majority on the committee. The dems voted against it.

Most of this was caught on tape by GPTV and witnessed by a large number of DA’s across the state who had come to beg him to pass the bill.)

A version of House bill 185 passed again in the House in 2008 attached to Senate bill 145. This time Smith went to the well of the Senate when the bill came back across to his chamber and lead the effort to strip the death penalty language out of the bill and killed it again.

This morning, Smith said at the Columbia County GOP breakfast that the reason he killed the bill was because it would have “harmed the death penalty.” This is hogwash because other states have similar laws that have been upheld as constitutional (for example Florida only requires a majority vote of 7-5).

Also, if Smith thought the bill needed to be adjusted in any way he could have simply and easily made any changes he thought necessary in his committee, since he was chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee and that is where the bill was assigned.

DA Danny Porter in Gwinnett County had the poster case for why the bill was needed. Two thugs hijacked a car with a young mother and baby daughter in the car. The baby was in a car seat. They shot the mother in the head but did not kill her. Then in front of the mother they shot the baby girl to death. Then they put the mother with the little girl in the trunk of the car and set them on fire.

Twelve jurors who were selected all said that if the facts warranted, they would apply the death penalty. After the trial where the jury deadlocked on the death penalty with only about two voting against it, one of those two admitted after the case was over that they never would have voted for the death penalty under any circumstances.

In other words, they should have told the truth and been excused before they got on the jury. There were between 15-20 other example cases like this the DA Association put together for me to use to help get the bill passed…

Of course, we all know of the Brian Nichols case. Four dead (two officers, a judge and court reporter) and another deputy beat until she is now mentally impaired.

The Macon Telegraph, by the way, this morning says the final words over the third GOP candidate in the race for attorney general:

Macon native Max Wood won’t get a chance to request a recount in his failed bid for the Republican nomination for state attorney general.

Wood, a former U.S. attorney, narrowly trailed second-place finisher Preston Smith by a margin of 1.1 percent (6,589 votes) after state election officials certified the vote Wednesday.

I am the father of an inexperienced, naive, conservative Christian college girl. If she got a student internship working for a politician like Preston Smith who held himself out as the embodiment of conservative Christian virtue, and then he seduced her into an affair while his wife was home with his four kids, I would want to shoot him. We have had enough of philandering hypocritical politicians misbehaving sexually with interns who are “barely legal.” If Preston Smith can’t be faithful to his marital vows, why should we trust him as Attorney General?

Stop throwing Sarah Palin around. She quit her job after her 15 minutes in order to charge $100,000 to say the same thing at every rally. Would you really want someone to endorse you that didn’t even finish her first term as Gov?

I think Sarah Palin is hot in a librarian, MILF way but lets be honest. Could you actually see her running the country? She couldn’t handle Alaska for 1 4 yr term and blamed everyone else. She is the one who made those stupid remarks, she is the one who quit on a sparsely populated state, she is the one who saw $$$$ and ran. She talked about experience and I’m sorry but being thr Mayor of a tiny town in Alaska isn’t experience especially when she quit when she got a chance to run a state.

She is the same as every other career politician who is greddy, opportunistic and shallow. Did the media portray her in the unfriedliet light? Yes but typically when theres smoke theres fire and again if you have any question about her Gov’t experience look back to when she quit on the people that elected her. I don’t care about the violations but she quit on the very people she made promises too in order to make money. If you were innocent would you not fight for your life?

@Exasperated

“But something tells me the rednecks of this state will ensure national embarrassment is heaped upon the state of Georgia because Sarah Palin tells them that Handel is a “common sense conservative.”

I am not concerned in the least what other states think of Georgia. What I am concerned with is the state budget, creation of jobs and a workable plan to deal with what is going to be a very prolonged recession. We have had four years of Barnes and eight years of the Pillsbury Dough Boy – and BOTH of them were college graduates. Yee haw! Now, after the arrogance of Barnes and self-serving sitting Governor, I’m more than willing to give Handel a shot. As far as Sarah Palin is concerned, her popularity lies in the fact that she is saying publicly what most Americans are thinking. I can find no fault with that, and can logically categorize those who speak ill of her.

Godless, pro-homosexual, anti-family, not strong on anti-abortion and no executive experience all describes the very unqualified Mrs. Handel. Georgia, you’re about to make a huge mistake if you pick her in this runoff. I can easily see through this charade, but the question is, can any of you? Miss Sarah was definitely snookered into the endorsement by Erick Erickson (who I like), but there is no way that Miss Sarah knows the real Mrs. Handel.
I’m praying for the Honorable Rep. Deal to run away with this and beat the dishonorable Roy Barnes this fall.

Amen,

I am no fan of either Republican governor candidates, nor will I vote for either of them, but your attack on Handel for CHOOSING not to have children is vicious. Palin chose to have 5, but she is running around the country and doing everything but taking care of them. There is nothing wrong with not having children. Too many people who should not be parents have far too many children, and society is paying the price. Views on something that is already legal (abortion) and something that has never been a legal issue (being gay) does not determine if a person has innovative ideas on how to improve the financial, educational, and other abandoned issues left over from the past administration. Conservative is a bad word, and I’m not liberal. I just have lived a long time, have a very good education, and a lot of common sense. Don’t fault me for having “senior” logic.

GA Values: Stop with your bloody list…… You post the same Left Wing, ‘The 15 most corrupt members of Congress,’ list on virtually every AJC blog. So, I have to post the following to let others know where the list comes from…….

I invite the media and public to research the list creator, CREW, ‘Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington’, online. You will find that this organization is funded by the far left organization ‘Democracy Alliance’, which, in turn, is funded by members such as George Soros, Jonathan Soros, Rob Reiner and the SEIU (Service Employees International Union) to name a few. As a side note, the Democracy Alliance also provides funding for ACORN, the New Democratic Network, and the Progressive Majority.

My information comes from Sourcewatch. To research, go to Wikipedia and look up Sourcewatch. Then go to Sourcewatch and look up ‘The Democracy Alliance’ and CREW, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

Before someone says, “Yeah, but there are Democrats on that list, too”. Of course they are going to put some Democrats on the list, otherwise it would appear to be biased. Democrat Representative John Murtha, on the list, is dead. We all know what is going on with Charlie Rangel, finally, after a two year investigation the House is prosecuting him. Senator Roland Burns from Illinois is not running for re-election, etc. etc.

In my opinion, the pathetic ethics investigations against Deal and Karen Handel are a result of partisan complaints filed after both candidates declared in the race for Governor. These are purely politically motivated allegations.

Why is our tax money going to the investigation of petty, political grievances. The state and the country are hurting. It’s time to focus on the issues folks……

It amazes me that Karen Handel should discuss “baggage” in her new TV Commercial, especially when she came to Georgia only 13 or so years ago with a carpet bag. It seems Georgia is being invaded by a “new generation” of carpetbaggers. Maybe this is what Handel means when she calls herself a “Next Generation Politician”……….

Wikipedia:

Carpetbagger: “In United States history, “carpetbaggers” was a negative term Southerners gave to Northerners (also referred to as Yankees) who moved to the South during the Reconstruction era, between 1865 and 1877. It was a derogatory term, suggesting opportunism and exploitation in the outsiders.” “In modern usage in the U.S., the term is sometimes used derisively to refer to a politician who runs for public office in an area where he or she does not have deep community ties, or has lived only for a short time.”

His tax stand might have a kernal of hope but his transportation, education and energy policies are not ready for prime time.

“A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in the state finds that Barnes earns 44% of the vote if Karen Handel is the Republican nominee and 43% if Nathan Deal is his opponent.

Handel earns 45% of the vote against Barnes while Deal picks up 49%. Handel, the former Secretary of State, and Deal, a former Congressman, are headed for an August 10 runoff. Handels work is a good ad for Roy Barnes. If she were more mature and insightful, she would be promoting herself versus repeating the exaggerations of House staffers and liberal bloggers.
I read the House report on Deal line by line. Not much there. She, more than Nathan Deal is what is wrong with politics imho. Republicans who come out of nowhere with no accomplishments, modestly, background or education, get elected, get addicted to power, but add nothing to the whole of the body politic. And they don’t have the brains or experience to be a persuasive advocate for good positions in the media or in the big seat. Sadly, I would hold my nose and vote for Barnes rather than her until she leaves politics and gets a job – even one in the salvage business, and accomplishes something. Her political resume appears totally padded with exaggerations. She has done very little outside of politics. I don’t “hate” her. Just sick of republican lightweights who are good at but one thing, i.e. running for office.

6 allegations instead of 13, but Nathan Deal sounds a lot like Charlie Rangel
OCE Summary of Allegations against Nathan Deal
1. In 2008 and 2009, Representative Deal sought to preserve a state vehicle inspection program that had generated significant personal financial benefit for him and a business partner. Representative Deal attended meetings on the state inspection program with Georgia officials and told the OCE he attended the meetings, not as a private citizen, but rather as a “public servant” acting in some official capacity. Changes to the vehicle inspection program concerned a purely state issue and according to state officials, no other Member of Congress from Georgia involved themselves in it. Thus, the Board concludes that there is a substantial reason to believe that Representative Deal may have violated House Rule 23, clause 3 and Rule 5 of the Code of Government Service.

2. In addition, Representative Deal was accompanied by his Chief of Staff at meetings on the vehicle inspection program and directed the Chief of Staff to use a House email account to send emails related to the meetings. Thus, there is substantial reason to believe Representative Deal violated the House Ethics Manual’s prohibition on using House equipment and resources for personal business purposes.

3. Representative Deal disclosed $50,001 to $100,000 in unearned “Dividends” income (and unearned “Partnership Income” on an amended form) from GSD on his 2009 Financial Disclosure Statement (covering calendar year 2008). However, the same income was described as earned wages on his 2008 personal income tax forms. Specifically, Representative Deal’s 2008 tax documents show $75,000 in GSD wages; in addition, Representative Deal received a W-2 from GSD in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Thus, there is a substantial reason to believe Representative Deal violated the House Ethics Manual’s directive to disclose all earned income.

4. Further, Representative Deal rendered some degree of service to GSD in 2008 and 2009 and his 2008 taxes show $75,000 in GSD wages. Thus, there is substantial reason to believe Representative Deal violated the earned income limitation, House Rule 25, Clause 1.

5. Representative Deal is the GSD corporate secretary. His 2008 taxes show $75,000 in GSD wages. Thus, there is substantial reason to believe Representative Deal violated the prohibition on receiving compensation as a corporate officer, House Rule 25, Clause 2.

6. Representative Deal also failed to disclose his status as the GSD corporate secretary on his financial disclosure forms. Thus, there is substantial reason to believe Representative Deal violated the House Ethics Manual’s directive to disclose all nongovernmental positions held.
