Austin Scott out-raises Jim Marshall in race for the 8th

Congressional Quarterly has put a quick eye on fund-raising in the budding 8th District contest between U.S. Rep. Jim Marshall of Macon, a Democrat, and state Rep. Austin Scott of Tifton, the former Republican candidate for governor.

Says CQ:

Scott, who will face a nominal primary challenge this month but is all but certain to be his party’s nominee this fall, showed $251,000 in receipts in about two months of fundraising. That total included about $56,000 in money Scott loaned to his campaign.

But even without those personal funds, Scott still outraised Marshall, who reported about $165,000 in receipts for the three month fundraising quarter from April to June.

The incumbent, though, was sitting on a hefty campaign warchest; Marshall had more than $981,000 in the bank on June 30, while Scott had about $213,000 in cash on hand.

Marshall tries to do the right thing and is on the whole a good guy, but in the Healthcare debate we learned that there is no such thing as a conservative Democrat, as they bend to the desires of Pelosi, when the issue is important to the party. Therefore, the people in the country, who believe we are on the wrong track, i.e. the majority of the folk, have no choice but to vote for Republicans. Great Scott, Austin may win.

Too bad Scott didn’t stay in the Governor’s race, he is honest and would have easily won the race. He’ll have a hard time against a war hero like Marshall.

I view Marshall as much less of a threat than the terrible GOP candidates for Governor. Really wish Austin would have stayed in that race, but the GOP establishment convinced him to get out of the way. They deserve to have Ox as the nominee.

Austin is very intelligent guy who brings a new face to Washington. I donated money to his campaign even though I do not live in the district. Not only is Austin a fiscal conservative he does not support the one size fit all No Child Left Behind failed policy that Marshall voted for.

Yes, and obviously money raised equates to their quality as an elected representative. Given that most politicians raise money from people they end up being beholden to once elected, I am always concerned about anybody that raises a lot, but more importantly I am concerned about who they raised it from. That kind of information, while public, is generally never reported as it might pull back the curtain on the truth about elections.

As H.L Menken once said “elections are just an advance auction of stolen goods.” Never more truthful a statement has been uttered.

As a lifetime member of the VFW, I have seen Jim Marshall help more veterans than the rest of our politicians combined.Jim has represented his district for many years without a hint of scandal, which is unusual for politicians these days.

@Rafe Hollister— Conservative Democrats “bend to the desires of Pelosi.” In what world? Look we got RomneyCare because Pelosi couldn’t push a more progressive health care bill. Republicans got what they wanted. They were for RomneyCare before they were against it.

@ David S — Austin has raised money from ordinary people like you and me. There were large donations and there were small donations. Not all politicians are beholden to BIG money donors. Austin is that type of politician. Just so you are aware, because of FEC regulations no one can donate more than $4800.00 total — $2400 for the primary and $2400 for the general. While that is a lot of money to some, it’s not the large amounts that can be raised on the State level. Think about it — who is going to sell their soul for $4800?

Roughrider-

I’m sure what you say about Marshall is true about helping veterans, though I have no first hand knowledge. Does that trump being responsible for how one votes in Congress. Scott may be just as good in veteran support and have a conservative voting record.

Scott was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and a gold spoon in each hand. If it wasn’t for his daddy’s money, and his mother’s campaigning, Austin would be an unknown.

Austin Scott is what is good about politics. It is sad that people like Austin Scott, Chris Vaughn and other young political guns get cast aside by the establishment. Austin is in a uphill campaign but anything is possible in this political environment running against an incumbent.

I wonder why the folks on here can’t support their candidate of choice without tearing down everyone else? I have looked at the republican field and have determined Eric Johnson is my choice. That doesn’t mean I think all the others are terrible. Come on folks support your candidate, but leave out the negative stuff.

Practice what you preach.. Say hello to your Buddy Saxby the war hero.

@Truth — we all know that Marshall voted no for the health care bill with the permission of Nancy Pelosi to do so. Check the transcript from the House and you can see for yourself that he was granted permission to vote no in order to save face in this District of which the majority of residents were opposed to the health care bill. Be sure you tell the whole story when you try to expound on Mr. Marshall.

Austin is a spoiled rich kid. He has ZERO legislative record in the State House; he couldn’t even manage bills out of his own committee. Why would we want someone like that in Congress?

Jim Marshall is as conservative as they come, which is why even democrats in his district aren’t all that comfortable with him. If you think he “got permission” to vote against the health care bill, then you don’t know Jim. He voted against the bill because it didn’t adequately lower the cost of health care.

MG Goddard was the best chance the R’s had at beating Jim; it won’t be Austin.

Marshall is a good man. Votes his conscience. Remember the difference between Republicans and Democrats. Democrats know there are widows and orphans. If Republicans know it they don’t seem to care.
