11Alive/V103 poll: Karen Handel moves up on GOP side, Roy Barnes above 50 percent
The consortium of 11Alive and V103-FM are out today with a Survey USA poll that shows former secretary of state Karen Handel within reach of a runoff berth with state Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine in the Republican primary race for governor.
But both former congressman Nathan Deal and state senator Eric Johnson of Savannah are close enough for concentrated TV campaign to change the line-up.
In the Democratic contest, former Gov. Roy Barnes has a 56 percent lead that – if it holds through the next 12 days – would allow him to claim the nomination without a runoff.
The GOP standings:
Oxendine, 32 percent;
Handel, 23 percent;
Deal, 12 percent;
Johnson, 12 percent;
Ray McBerry, 5 percent;
Jeff Chapman, 4 percent;
Otis Putnam, 1 percent;
And undecided, 17 percent.
The automated poll, on the Republican side, has a margin of error of 3.2 percent. Survey USA has a workable crosstab feature here that shows Handel – who went up on TV only today – with a potential (but not yet statistically significant) edge among Republican women.
The Democratic standings:
Barnes, 56 percent;
Thurbert Baker, 18 percent;
DuBose Porter, 6 percent;
David Poythress, 5 percent;
Carl Camon and Bill Bolton, 3 percent;
Randal Mangham, 1 percent;
And undecided, 9 percent.
The margin of error in the Democratic poll is 4.2 percent. The Survey USA crosstab machine shows that, while Baker’s share of African-American voters has picked up since the attorney general began his TV campaign, Barnes still had the support of 53 percent of black voters polled.

Watcing WSB about an hour ago I saw FOUR commercials in a row from these clowns. I saw one from Deal, Ox, Barnes, and Johnson. It was almost more than I could take. Sad that the better candidates on both sides are as well funded as these crooks.
Also, I am not looking forward to having to see Handel’s face on my tv. I met her in person at an event sponsered by my employer and boy is she rude. If you question her undeveloped tax proposals she will snap at you.

I for one am tires of the same POS candidates we’ve had to choose from. We have an election coming up and all you can come up with are political retreads! Eric Johnson has ethics issues and is tied to big time developers who want to make millions off their new governor–like the Reynolds. Deal was one of the most ethically challenged members of congress. Oxendine is the Blogo of Georgia Republicans. Only Karen Handel can beat Roy Barnes and prevent the policies of the Democrats in Washington from coming to Georgia. Handel all the way!

I just got my mailbox full of campaign mailers!! Oxendine’s was good and postive but I can’t overlook his ethics violation and Handel just hammers the other contenders with more negative ads. She bothers me with all this attack stuff……..it shows her true colors. Then some Georgia Conservative newspaper endorses someone in every race. Some were suprising.
I only have one choice and that’s Jeff Chapman. I’m really proud of my vote. Mine will not be a waste.

Obviously Handel’s campaign staffers have nothing to do but post on AJC blogs — all they ever say is she has “guts and integrity” and blah blah blah. But, what she really has is no real experience and “ethics” issues of her own – just ask the DOJ with what she tried to do to voter rolls to dilute minority voting power. And she certainly isn’t qualified to lead GA on education issues. Sorry — just not hapeneing. I don’t want Ox as Governor, and don’t know enough about most of the others – and I haven’t voted democratic for governor in 4 elections.
Neither Ox nor Handel is qualified or appropriate to be GA’s Governor , as both will simply be puppets for the people who bought their way to power — people, just please pick somebody else — ANYBODY ELSE.

I know this is off topic but – The teachers and staff of Hall County Schools just received an email from Nathan Deal asking for our support in the election. This was sent via our district’s email system. It is well known that our Superintendent is a good friend and supporter of his as well as a neighbor.
Is this something that is allowed in this state? To use a public school email system to send out asking for support in an election?

Are you he teacher who sent home instructions and tests with my third grader with every one full of grammatical and syntax errors? She now attends a private school where the emphasis is on education and not teacher benefits. Best move her Mother and I ever made.
I actually have sympathy for public school teachers in general for the atmosphere they must endure and the inability to discipline. Teachers forced to tolerate students with no interest in learning and parents who consider the school a baby sitting service are much to blame. But I find that more public school teachers than should be tolerated are inept and uneducated themselves.

I am tired of politicians who enter office with little or no net worth and leave office as millionaires.
The financial disclosure forms for their first race and current race should be mandatory reading for all voters. If they are more wealthy now than in their first race – send them home.
In fact, send all the incumbents home, at least the new guys will have some learning curve (an honesty period if you will) before they start stealing from the taxpayers. Then at the next opportunity send them home. Please do not take the position that everyone’s elected representative or Senator is a crook except for yours.
Eliminate the pork from the Local, State and Federal budgets and balancing the budgets will be far less difficult.
NEVER, NEVER, EVER vote for anyone with a law degree. A lawyer has been a crook for long enough to avoid the learning curve.

Jekyll Island is one of Georgia’s greatest treasures, originally intended to be a place where Georgia’s families can go for vacation without breaking the bank.
None of that matters to gubernatorial candidate Eric Johnson, however. As a member of the State Senate, Johnson spearheaded the effort to turn Georgia’s coastal treasure over to developers, putting the island’s fragile ecosystem at risk and giving the finger to people in the area who opposed selling Jekyll to the highest bidder.
In this case, the highest bidder was Linger Longer Properties, one of Johnson’s biggest campaign donors.
But Johnson’s record of favors for friends isn’t just for big donors. As a State Senator, Johnson led the investigation into allegations that House Speaker Glenn Richardson had an inappropriate relationship with a lobbyist. Johnson’s investigation exonerated the Speaker, but the allegations against him resurfaced, forcing his resignation in a cloud of disgrace.
James Reynolds, III of Linger Longer Properties serves as Finance Chair for Johnson’s gubernatorial campaign.1
Johnson has received $2,000 so far in his campaign for Governor from Reynolds,2 and another $3,000 from Reynolds’ company.3
Johnson serves on the board of the Jekyll Island authority, which handed out a lucrative business deal to Reynolds’ development company.

As an African-American I would like to support Mr. Baker, but the way he backstabbed Mr. Wilson of Douglass County, and also the way he refused to charge the Klansmen in the 1946 Monroe, Georgia Lynching case forces me to vote for Mr. Barnes. Baker should have known that Wilson was innocent. Everyone else did!

Sga teacher I have already voted for Poythress, I am not surprised at the 11 Alive poll, it reflects the viiews of people in Atlanta. Georgia is a large state and when the votes from the hinterlands trickle in, Roy’s 50% will vanish. In McDuffie County I have seen one sign for Johnson, It is in front of a lawyer’s office. This lawyer lives at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, GA, No other candidates foe Governor have any signs in our county except David Poythress. He has several posted around the county. Two of them were placed by me. I do not know who put up the other signs, but it shows David has support in rural Georgia.

Both side promise services we cannot afford. One side wants to pay for it with taxes and the other side wants to cut taxes to pay for it. Especially In a down economy I am not sure which idea is worse.
At the end we need some tough cuts and we need to pay for most services via fees based on usage. Without the cost associated with the service we will never get this under control. We can only lower taxes and pay for the services and higher taxes during down-turn only crowds out investment and consumer spending which drives jobs, and if the services are really in demand than you will see the spending to support the service.
The reality is Georgia like other states are playing a shell game to balance the budget. And if we do not take a real-world approach instead of playing kick the can with heath-care cost, state worker retirements, education and federal subsides balancing the budget it will blow-up.
I realize police, schools, roads…..are core services needed. But the extras associated with services can be fee based on tax payers and or employees of the state ie extra activities at schools, proper fees for licenses, toll roads, employee paid retirements……..
I do think Karen Handel would take the most realistic tough love approach. As I have said in the past I am not part of the Karen Handel campaign nor do I coordinate and have very limited contact. Also I have given same opinions to many running for offices from all parties and many different offices.
