Sonny Perdue to name Brad Bryant to state super job?

My AJC colleague Maureen Downey has picked up word that Gov. Sonny Perdue will name Brad Bryant, a state Board of Education member from DeKalb, as interim state school chief in the wake of Kathy Cox’s resignation.

He’s expected to conduct an independent campaign aimed at November for a full four-year term. Bryant is a past president of the Georgia School Boards Association.

For a minute, I thought it read “Bear” Bryant.

Being a school board member and serving in the PTA are wonderful resume items but they don’t qualify a person to be school superintendent. Local school board members, by the nature of the elected position they hold, are loyal to voters first and the children of their district second. State school board members are so far removed from the local school classroom that they have no perspective on the daily occurrences there. How can the governor think that a non-educator is the the best candidate for the position of superintendent? What classroom experience does he have? None. How has he dealt with the impact of curriculum decisions made by bureaucrats instead of educators? He hasn’t. Board members are politicians and superintendents are, or should be, educators. The two aren’t the same, though the governor thinks so.

Looks like Sonny is trying to pick winners and losers in November again, just like he did with Kemp.

I don’t know the man, but if Sonny chooses him, then I’m voting for someone else in November.

Just what our last place educational system needs a LAWYER.. Well he does have a proven record of accomplishment on the state board of education, moved Georgia from last place to last place.

I know Brad. He is a man of integrity. He is intelligent and has a reasoned approach to government. While I am certainly no fan of the Governor, if he can get Brad to accept this position, it would be the best appointment he’s made during his tenure.

I know Brad and he is not fit to be a Superintendent. He does not care about children or about the public school system. He should run from the opportunity because he is not the man for the job. Georgia needs someone who can distinguish between being 49 out of 50 in education. He has been on the state board of education for years and Georgia can’t seem to move out of the bottom 10 schools category. So, this will be a big mistake. He is not for public education nor does he like kids.

I had hoped that Governor Perdue would select Martha Reichrath (current Deputy Superintendent of Schools) to be the Interim Superintendent. Dr. Reichrath would have been an excellent choice!

Jim, want to thank you again for your continued good work in trying to kill the APS E-Rate scandal. Even though you are billed as “the insider” you’re doing such a good job pretending to be clueless about the scandal, and the allegations of criminal activity that go along with it.

We are getting a little hungry watching this World Cup game. Be a good boy jim, and run out and buy us some snacks before the halftime whistle.

Well, the professional educators (remember Linda?) haven’t done such a great job. Perhaps someone with a broader perspective can handle the job. Of course, we see that Brad has been on the same Bd of Ed that has done such a sorry job of running our schools.

Shouldn’t a superintendent have actually TAUGHT at some point. It seems that Mr. Bryant is just another political creature soon to be owing favors to Sonny “gut education” Purdue. The person in charge of EDUCATIONAL POLICY should understand the education part and not just policy making. The man has no exposure to IDEA, testing, classroom procedures, teacher struggles, or educational theories. He will bring his business experience to the one field that a business model cannot be applied to. EDUCATION IS NOT A WIDGET FACTORY. Fill the position with an educator not a political lackey.

Linda Schrenko taught. Where is she? Kathy Cox taught…where has she led us? Business models should be built to addresses NEEDS. Board members can learn much about IDEA, classroom procedures, etc. Do they need to know about all of that or should teachers and local administrators be given back the autonomy to take care of those issues. A state superintendent is not a micro-manager. The CEO of Ford does not need to know how to build an engine but he does need to know how to employ those who do. Perhaps our model of having educators at the top has been flawed. Perhaps we NEED someone who knows how to get things done BY educators and FOR educators and most of all for children and the future of GA. My hope is that Mr. Bryant won’t be a political lackey or an educator. I hope he will be a leader.

What people don’t get, is that you can no more address education in this state without addressing discipline, than you can address Afghanistan, without addressing the Taliban.

Will Bryant take a stand on the issue? Has he ever?

Yet another ‘good ol’ boy’ pick from Sonny Perdue. First, Brian Kemp now this guy. Maybe Sonny Perdue should look at who is in #1 place in education in the nation, approach them, and try to appoint that person in charge of it.
