State GOP chair Sue Everhart has Karen Handel’s back on ‘pro-life’ label

Updated at 8:50 p.m.: From the Associated Press:

Georgia Republican Party Chair Sue Everhart says GOP gubernatorial candidate Karen Handel is pro-life as far as she is concerned.

Handel’s stance on abortion came under fire earlier this month after she was the only Republican candidate for governor not endorsed by Georgia Right to Life.

Handel has said she opposes abortion except in cases of rape or incest or when the life of the mother is at risk.

Everhart told the Atlanta Press Club on Thursday said she isn’t concerned with the exceptions Handel listed.

Everhart also says that Georgia Right to Life President Dan Becker is not the voice of the Republican Party, and that as much of a third of the party could be pro-choice.

Errin Haines of the Associated Press adds these direct quotes from Everhart:

“I don’t care what her exceptions are. Karen’s pro-life. Mr. Becker is not the voice of the Republican Party,” Everhart said.

Everhart’s remarks were made at a forum that also featured Jane Kidd, chairman of the state Democratic party. The Atlanta Press Club session was moderated by Denis O’Hayer of WABE (90.1FM), who has posted this sound on the abortion exchange, well worth checking out.

I stand with the Georgia Right to Life. Everhart does not sound like she is very pro-life according to the last paragraph.

Dan Becker’s a nutjob. He and Sadie Fields would make a lovely couple.

“Barren”, Dan? Seriously?….”Barren”? If only your mother had been so lucky.

And what evidence does Everhart give to back up this claim that Handel is actually pro-life? All Everhart says is that “as much of a third of the party could be pro-choice.” Sounds like she is indirectly apologizing for Karen’s pro-choice views. Where is it in in the party bylaws that the duty of the chairperson is to stand up for Handel on this?. Handel dug her own hole. These are unsubstantiated, biased, and out-of-touch statements by the state party chairperson.

The question that need to be asked why are other pro-life women’s organization like the Susan B. Anthony list not supporting Ms Handel, but they are supporting other women who are running for office in other states. Their mission is to help elect pro-life women.

Front page news of another multi-million dollar APS E-Rate scandal, and incontrovertible evidence of a massive APS cheating scandal, and jim “the insider” still can’t find his voice?

Does jim get his marching orders from the legacy of Ralph McGill, or does he get his marching orders from EDU-Pac and the Chamber of Commerce?

Loopholes galore. Rape. Incest. Life of mother. What’s next? Health too. Yeah, that’s the kind of pro-life stance you can drive a truck through. Oh yeah, and would win you a nomination on a Democratic ticket too Karen. Palin ain’t endorsing this woman. Afterall wouldn’t a disabled fetus qualify for an abortion under the Handel standard?

Pro-life leader Jill Stanek just released the endorsements from two women’s orgs. One pro-life the other pro-choice! Karen Handel’s name is NOT on the pro-life list. Why? Why does a group that funds and endorses only pro-life women NOT endorse Handel if she is soooo pro-life? Evidently GRTL is not the only group that has a problem with her self proclaimed credentials!

Sue should have just said, “As party chairman I’m not going to get drawn into disputes between our candidates, they can speak for themselves on these issues.” When Sue starts throwing around made-up statistics like one third of GOP voters are pro-choice, she’s crossed the line.

Several of us here in midtown are voting in the Republican Primary just to vote for Karen Handel. We are calling it the “Cynthia McKinney Maneuver.” We learned it from the Republicans in North Dekalb County.

Road Scholar: Because they are not pro-life, they are pro-birth. They consistently oppose health (see Obama Care), nutrition and education programs that support poor children. And anyone who would want a fetus created by rape or incest to be brought to term has a heart of stone. Destroy the mother to save the fetus.

As a typically republican voting citizen, I would prefer to see Sue Everhart terminated from her position. She is supposed to be advocating the party position, not going moral relativist on the vast majority of republican voters. It seems white conservative women just can’t help sticking together, regardless of the topic. In the 7/20 primary, I will vote for Jeff Chapman.

2.22 RESTRICTIONS ON ENDORSEMENTS BY GRP OFFICIALS

Members of the State Executive Committee, the State Committee, GRP employees, appointed GRP Officials, County Chairmen, members of any County Committee and members of any District Committee shall not use their official title in any manner in connection with their support of, any candidate for the Republican nomination for any public office in the State of Georgia in primaries where there is at least one other Republican candidate.

Sue Everhart used her title to support a candidate in a primary with 5 other Republican candidates. This violation of party by-laws could not be any more clear cut, and must result in disciplinary action against Sue Everhart.

Full bylaws can be found here: http://www.gagop.org/about/gagoprules.php

20something represents the coming majority. I phrase it as “cut the government in half and quit taking my money but I don’t give a dang who you sleep with, if you marry the father of your baby or not, what choice you make when you get pregnant or where, or if, you attend religious services as long as you don’t ask me for any of my money to pay for your choices”

That will be the Republican majority of 2025.

Sue Everhart may “need” to listen to the Buckhead/Country Club Republicans on this issue for fundraising purposes. But they ain’t the grassroots who elected her chairwoman. I am very disappointed in her involvement in the race and particularly her apparent antipathy to the state party and national platform which actually has been and does GRTL’s stance.

Hi midtownguy,
You might not be aware that the younger demographic is more pro-life than the older ones. Maybe not your friends, but its true. They are the generation which is missing about 1/3 of its fellow citizens because they were aborted.

really – approximately 25-33% of all concepted future humans have been aborted per year. About 42 million potential citizens. Who knows if a future Shakespeare or Chuck Yeager was among them. All for the convenience of moral relativist female feminists, who desired sexual freedom. As the saying goes, freedeom is not free.

If one-third of the Gay Old Pervert party is “pro-choice,” why don’t the remaining Roman Catholics form their own political party so Georgia’s Baptists don’t get tangled up in your insanity?

Anybody opposed to a rape or incest victim’s right to terminate a pregnancy conceived by a felonious act is a sick person worthy only of damnation by G-d. Who else aligns him or herself with those Our Nation’s Founder identified as “the real Anti-Christ?”

I am so tired of you damned men telling women what to do with their bodies. Frankly it’s not your choice to make. Women are the only ones who have anything to loose when she becomes pregnant. When you men start downloading babies…. then and only then do you have a vote or a voice in my decision. I won’t vote to take away your Viagra, (which you take so that you may continue to spread your seed while not wearing a condom), you leave my right to choose what your night of happy costs me ( because I was stupid enough to believe that you were sterile). Or consider the thought that your daughter were to get raped, are you going to pressure her to carry a pregnancy which is a constant reminder of the violence she endured.
Frankly, men are clueless about the whole right to life issue.

You know Jesus advocated the violation of existing Jewish Law by banning remarriage after divorce. Do the GRTL think we should have laws against people that divorce and remarry? Jesus was much clearer about this than homosexuality.

This is totally out of control. The state GOP finally has a common sense moderate who pulled herself up by the boostraps – only to get railroaded by the hard-right-wing fanatics in her own party. Indeed candidates in the primary season run to the right and go to the center in the general, but wow, who can forget this saga?

I find it intersting that Ms. Everhart does not know the party platform of the Republican party. I also find it interesting that by her own comments she does sound like she is supporting Handel.

I also find it interesting that from all the articles I read GRTL never said anything about being the voice of the Republican party. They said they were going to be a voice for pro-life issues though.

In fact they didn’t even mention anything about the Republican party.

Lastly, if the Republican party is going to be primarily “focused on fiscal issues” and leaves their party platform behind, then I will have one more reason not to vote Republican.

As a “20 Something” myself, I see more and more people everyday who care about humanity in general: from your right to be born and be protected to the obligation to take care of the children in foster care, the orphans, and those in poverty.

This generation is compassionate about humanity in general.

Unfortunately Sue Everhart did not represent herself or the party well in this interview. As a prolifer and a prochoice defector I realized that if LIFE is paramount and EVERY other issue is a mute point if life is not valued first.

Since some also want to refer to rape and incest my suggestion is to work at harsher punishments for perpetrators of those horrific crimes and not make innocent children pay with their lives.
