A late jolt: Roy Barnes’ new ad and his bank investments

Other candidates and the Savannah Morning News are pointing out that the latest TV ad by former Gov. Roy Barnes leaves a few details out. Writes Larry Peterson:

Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Roy Barnes is airing a television ad that takes aim at lobbyists – and banks that receive federal bailouts.

But the former governor – the frontrunner for his party’s nomination – was himself a registered lobbyist in 2007.

And his state financial disclosure report says he owned stock last year in five banks that received more than $34 billion in bailout loans.

The stock he said he owned in them was worth about $654,000 as of Wednesday. Since late 2008, they have paid him dividends that may have totaled almost $23,000.

In his ad, Barnes says that, as governor, he’d make sure banks don’t foreclose on a home before there are negotiations.

“Bankers and their lobbyists got bonuses and bailouts, but you lost your home,” Barnes says in the ad as video shows a family being evicted.
Viewed against the backdrop of his investments, the ad drew sharp rebukes from other candidates.

The ad in question:

Rival candidates for governor, Democrat and Republican, were happy to pile on:

“This goes to the heart of credibility,” said Democratic state House Leader DuBose Porter. “He’s got little to none. It’s another example of what he says, as opposed to what he does.”

Ben Fry, campaign manager for former Savannah Republican State Sen. Eric Johnson, was equally blunt.

“This is just typical Roy,” Fry said. “He thinks his trial lawyer-funded TV ads and slick political double-speak can cover up the truth.”

The explanation from the Barnes camp:

Chris Carpenter, Barnes’ campaign manager, defended the candidate and his television commercial.

Carpenter said Barnes, an attorney, represented a client in a zoning dispute before the Atlanta City Council.

“He didn’t do any lobbying,” Carpenter said.

Barnes was unsure of whether the law required him to register, but he did so out of “an abundance of caution,” Carpenter said.

Later, the Georgia State Bar told him registration for such work isn’t required and Barnes hasn’t registered since 2007, Carpenter said….

Carpenter said Barnes’ investments should be viewed in a wider context.
“Roy,” he said, “has owned most of these stocks for years, well before the financial crisis, and most of them are currently at a loss.

“And despite owning these stocks, he still passed the toughest anti-predatory lending law in the nation.”

Barnes supported and signed legislation dealing with the issue.

I trust Barnes to clean up the banks more than any of the other candidates. Roy passed tough banking regulation when he was Governor and Perdue and the GOP quickly gutted the legislation when they took over 8 years ago. Barnes is the ONLY candidate that will watch out for the little guy vs. the powerful and ruthless bankers. The GOP would let banks foreclose on Jesus Christ and it wouldn’t bother them a bit.

Roy Barnes, Vietnam draft-dodging Mammon-worshipping philistine: his wife’s the “man” and all Georgians need do is look at the way he says “It’s only fair,” (27sec mark) to know with what “feather” he “flocks.” Guest lists for social events his backers host are filtered to prevent his actually coming into contact with those who don’t share his effete “Richmondese Castilian” “manner,” the same way draft-dodging, closet-queen George W. Bush is “shielded” from the shock of being around true Americans.

IMNO-

You need to tell your man he has a mistake in his commerical. He has his rank as Gen. That denotes he was a four star general when in fact he was a LTG or three star general. He does mention 3 stars in his tv ad, but having his rank wrong is very bad. Either he didn’t check the ad well or he is trying to mislead.

Anyone who misleads rank, awards, combat time, etc is rejected out of hand by most Vets. The democrat running for the senate in Conn. comes to mind.

Retiredsoldier, as I am not former military like yourself, I will just have to take your word for that ranking stuff. I know he was “Adjuct General” as the head of GA National Guard. He was Major General at one point. And LT. General.

I have not seen his commercial. I also do not know this man personally. I have never seen him or met him. I just think that a person with his qualifications deserves a fair shake at his candidacy.

From his website:

“David Poythress is a native Georgian. He was born and raised in Macon, where his father worked for the city water department and his mother was a school teacher. David attended Bibb County public schools and played football at Lanier High for Boys. David was raised in the Methodist Church, and the Poythress family was founding members of Riverside Methodist Church in Macon.

He attended Emory at Oxford, and earned his degree and his commission as an Air Force officer at “big Emory” in Atlanta. David served four years on active duty in the U.S. Air Force as a judge advocate officer (JAG.) He volunteered for duty in Viet Nam, and served one year as defense counsel and Chief of Military Justice at DaNang Air Base, in the Republic of Viet Nam.

David’s civilian career has included public service, military service, and private law practice.

Upon returning to civilian life, David held several positions in Georgia state government, including Assistant Attorney General, Deputy State Revenue Commissioner, and Secretary of State. During the 80’s, David practiced law in Atlanta, with concentrations in taxation and public finance. In 1992 he was elected statewide to the office of State Labor Commissioner, and he was re-elected in 1994.

David resigned as State Labor Commissioner in 1998 and ran for Governor of Georgia.

After leaving active duty, David remained in the Air Force Reserve, and attained the rank of Brigadier General. In 1999, then Governor Barnes appointed David Adjutant General – the commander of the Georgia Army and Air National Guard – in the rank of Major General. He was reappointed by Governor Perdue, who also promoted him to the rank of Lieutenant General – the first Adjutant General in Georgia history to wear three stars!

General Poythress has held several local and national leadership positions. He served as Vice Chairman of the Board of the National Guard Association of the United States, and is a member of the Board of Directors of Jobs for America’s Graduates. He served two terms as Chairman of the Board of the State YMCA of Georgia, and he previously served on the boards of Wesley Homes and the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women. David is a Rotarian and a Mason. He is a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the USO.

The General and his wife Elizabeth are members of Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. They have three grown children, and eight grandchildren

“Sonny Perdue is robbing our educators blind to build horse barns and fishing docks and not blinking an eye.”

Wow David – so how much money does the Educational System generate that is “robbed”? Typical that your group would attempt to lay claim to all the tax revenues of the state. It’s the Educators that have been the ones fleecing GA taxpayers all these years.

I’d rather see it spent on a dock (and I don’t even fish) than have it dumped into the black-hole school system budget.

Mr. Grumpy

May 28th, 2010
2:33 pm

Hey, Julie, be stupid like some other educators are right now, and vote against your own interest. Did Sonny Perdue help you at all…besides gutting the state’s education system? Why do you think Kathy Cox resigned? She publically disagreed with his plans to cut the budget more and got thrown under the bus by him, so she got out. He gave you furloughs and would have done anything to institute Eric Johynson’s vouchers plan so that the tax payer could foot the bill for someone else’s kid to go to a private school. Is that also in your best interest? Your complaint with Barnes is what? That he tried to remove incompetent teachers from the classroom? If you’re a good educator, you should applaud those kinds of efforts. There are very few teachers bad enough to be run out of the classroom, but the ones that are bad deserve to be run out.

So, vote for someione who either has no chance of winniong or wuill do even more to hurt your profession.

You’re back on the Marijuana, don’t take your medication and, yep, you’ve broken your word and your also back to crack and LSD. Will you ever learn? Son, you’re no longer in grammar school! OOPS! Yes you are, but at 35 + years of age you’re a tad larger than the others but haven’t learned how to behave in public yet.

While Perdue plucked, cooked, deep fried and charred the economy and schools of Georgia, his cronies like Oxendine lined his pockets with cash along the way.

Oxendine knows about education….all his kids go to private schools. Oxendine is like Perdue 2.0, only with more arrogance and lower ethical standards, if that’s even possible.

Wow, Democrats better pray that DuBose Porter gets the nomination over Roy Barnes if they wish to win in November. I just saw that Porter moved to #2 in the most recent poll (For what that matters) and wouldn’t be surprised to see him steadily move up, even though he’s got a little ways to go.

Some of us actually read and understand the words of the classicals and didn’t just take the neo-classicals for their word….

Nice to see a lot of people realize they’re all crooks in the governor’s race, Republican or Democrat. I’m looking for a classical liberal or a classical progresive. The last one I saw in Georgia was shot down by a Soviet Mig. Rest in peace Larry McDonald. They’re all sell outs for the stage or idiots who confuse modern libertarianism (neo-feudalism) as classical liberalism.

Do not vote for that corrupt coward Barnes. He refused to take action against the corrupt American Cancer Society as it routinely defrauded numerous unwitting cancer patients and their loved ones out of money in annual Relay for Death races around the State as documented in the article “American Cancer Society America’s Wealthiest ‘Non-Profit’ Institution” by Samuel S. Epstein M.D., International Journal of Health Services, 1999, also available at http://www.preventcancer.com. Barnes is a gutless coward and should do all the citizens of Georgia a favor and not run any more. What does he want to be governor for anyway if not to satisfy his own inflated ego? Haven’t we had enough of this good for nothing lawyer who winks at the fleecing of unwitting cancer victims by the corrupt outlaw organization American Cancer Society which promotes and supports all those toxic treatments which kill most of the cancer patients.

Mr. Galloway, something that might be good for all Georgian’s to know is that Roy is (or certainly used to be) owner of various commercial buildings that are on long-term leases to state agencies. Of course, these properties are held in LLC’s or the like, as most all commercial properties are. A few that come to mind are in Albany and Athens. If memory serves me right, I think they might be DOL offices. If the state can’t pay cash for these needed offices, wouldn’t it be simple enough to float their own bonds to spread out the cost? It just seems like an extreme conflict of interest for a governor (current or former) to have such strong credit tenants. These buildings appreciate significantly and can be sold farily easily to wall street investors or pension funds when cap rates come down. I’d like this kind of investment opportunity…. get a 30 year lease in place with a state agency, build to suit with very little equity, cash flow from day one, and can sell whenever the cap rates come down (and thus property value goes way up)!!!!!

Curiously, in a supposed anti-incumbent year, most of the departing are not retiring but seeking higher office. We may recycle more than we replace. The bad news is that a frustrating 114 seats still have but one contestant. Two of them aren’t even incumbents, meaning they will affect state policy without being vetted by voters. And I have to think that we’d be better off if many had run instead for the Legislature — and cut down on the number running unopposed. Georgia’s problems are numerous. They aren’t going away. There’s too much stale thinking at the Capitol, on both sides of the aisle. New voices would be welcome.

Sorry, I’m late to the party – didn’t this all get started with Roy’s bank bashing ad? Typical. He takes their money and then tries to fool people with ads like that. I checked the Treasury Dept’s website. None of those small banks that failed he talks about got bailouts. Tell the truth, Roy. This is typical trial lawyer tactics. But in court, he has to fool 12 people. At least he’s got a lot more people to fool in this election and the majority has already been fooled once. His big hope is he can fool the majority again.

Aaron Burr v Mexico,
You are a perfect example of why the mentally ill should not be allowed to cast a vote. You are suffering from wealth envy and are also an uninformed dolt. BOTH political parties are corrupt and that is NOT going to change unless we (who have a healthy, sane mind and can make an unemotional decision in the voting booth) choose new blood for elected office. Thank goodness the majority of this state will elect someone OUTSIDE the hyper-corrupt, Obama-hugging Socialist Democratic Party. Conservatives of some kind are going to rule this state for a LONG TIME to come, so if you don’t like it, you can lump it and leave.

Can’t vote for Roy. I blame him for 8 years of the moron in office now! David Poythress is the only one who seems to understand things. He understands we have realy problems and has ideas that will help Georgia move forward. Some poster earlier was making fun of Poythress for not accepting pay as governor because he already earns governemnt pensions. Key word there is “EARNED.” He worked for them. He’s got them and now he is in a position where he wants to help his state. Is doing your job and earning your penion a bad thing? http://www.poythressforgovernor.com.

There are NO republicans that deserve a vote from anyone who actually cares about the state of Georgia and its future. Any of them will build on the mess Sonny has started. Come on Georgia…haven’t you had enough of career politicians who are only out for themselves? I know I have!

Roy “passed tough anti-predatory lending laws”???? What a dumb+ar+ss statement. The worst predatory lending activities took place after the law passed. There was less predatory lending prior to legislation that there was after…..go figure. This just goes to show everyone what a joke Barnes is. He invest in banks and lobbies and then criticizes those two professions actions. The double talk is plainly seen and Barnes will be lame in his crusade for election.

By the way, since billions of dollars have been taken in by the Dept of Banking and Finance in Georgia to regulate mortgage companies, a substantial increase of unscrupulous and predatory lending took place. Prior to regulation and the anti-predatory legislation, there was considerably less. What happened to the billions of dollars taken in by the Ga. Dept. Of Banking and Finance?
Is this dept. just a farce and taking in all this money to only have it diverted to other areas other than protecting citizens from predatory lenders? That dept. is a joke. If they were doing their job during audits, they’d caught most of the idiots that violated the law. But, most examiners don’t know what they’re doing anyway.

The pledge reads in full: “I do hereby swear or affirm my allegiance to the Georgia Republican Party.”

But Boyd, a relative new-comer to politics whose Republican-turned-Independent campaign is predicated on his ability to self-finance, objected to the oath, which more than 150 would-be and current Republican office holders signed Monday. The businessman said he could not pledge allegiance to a party that has deviated from good policy for the sake of politics; alternatively he offered a “compromise oath,” and was quickly rebuffed by party leaders.

“They’ve left me no other choice,” Boyd said of his decision to run as an Independent after a terse stand-off with an attorney for the state GOP. “Maybe I’ll set up a Ronald Reagan Republican wing.”

To the commenter who agreed that Barnes betrayed teachers but said at least he “admitted” it: How on earth could he deny it? His own words and actions are there in dozens of newspaper articles. You think he could deny it? King Roy had his chance and blew it by betraying teachers and most of Georgia’s citizens. He doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in Hell of regaining his crown. Are any of the others better, either party? Not as far as I can see. If it’s not too late (don’t know the deadline), let’s hope and pray a better candidate than the current crop enters the race.

Barnes along with his stooge Bobby Kahn, stage managed what might have been the most partisan, gerrymandered redistricting in the history of the USA. As his legislative leader said at the time, “it’s partisan right down to it’s toenails”. You bet we remember King Roy.

Let’s ask the “big picture” question of these candidates. Will any of them expand and defend the installation of more nuclear and coal-fired plants to power up this growing state? Will any of them allow offshore oil drilling off our coast so that we can be a player on the world stage to supply Earth with a much-needed resource? Will any of them take a tough stand on illegal immigrants who are taking our jobs and sending their earnings back to their motherlands? Will any of these candidates institute a voucher program for education so that I can choose where to send my kid to school? Will any of these men or woman actually stand up to the ever-expanding federal government by saying no to Obamacare and Cap and Trade? Will any of the gubernatorial candidates fight to not only keep our Georgia military installations intact, but actually lobby to create more of them? Will any of these people say NO to union boss thugs and kick them out of the state? Will anyone make Georgia an English-only state?
Right now, I’m not buying any of it. They all talk the talk, but once any of them get in there, they won’t follow through.
If I were elected, I would have a 90-day rule to pass all of the aforementioned items. If those items, didn’t get passed, I would stand in front of the General Assembly and perform mandatory “Force Vote Sessions” to implement everything on my plate into law. No more negotiating. No more wiggle room. No, no, no! I’m tired of great state like Georgia kowtowing to the feds and in the end, only losing power.

1) What exactly did Roy Barnes, as governor for GA in 1999 -2003, do for educators? I can’t find specifics.
2) If the answer is “very little”, anybody want to guess why he’s sucking up to one of the largest groups of GA voters?
3) If anyone can give me a legitimate answer with PROOF (not opinion….I want documentation and websites), I’ll rethink my vote this fall. Right now, all I can think of is his transportation reform for 4 years. Just curious.

I think Roy Barnes’ campaign people need to emphasize his hard work as governor to pass the “2002 Georgia Fair Lending Act” (GFLA). It was a landmark piece of legislation which would have put a stop to the crooked subprime ARM lending that led DIRECTLY to the financial crisis we now endure.

We should also point out that the REPUBLICAN Bush Administration used so-called “Federal Pre-emption” in January, 2003 to undermine the law by exempting virtually all Georgia banks, thrifts and subsidiaries from the GFLA. (Where were all the “States Rights” whiners when this happened!!)Then in March, 2003, REPUBLICAN Governor Perdue and his REPUBLICAN legislature completely undid the GFLA so that lenders could
“flip” all their worthless subprime loans for securitization by big-time
investment banks….and the rest is history as they say!

Let’s put Roy Barnes back in the Governor’s Office so we can bring some justice for borrowers and some REAL consumer protection…something REPUBLICANS oppose with a vengeance!
