Barack Obama dips into 4th District race, hands Hank Johnson an endorsement

The ever-courteous Hank Johnson has given those Democrats who want his DeKalb County seat in Congress a long weekend to think things over, plus this press release:

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama announced Thursday his endorsement of Congressman Hank Johnson, who represents Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District.

“Congressman Johnson has done an outstanding job,” said President Obama. “Together, we are fighting to renew our economy. Together, we passed historic health care reform. I am proud to stand with Hank and support his re-election.”

Qualifying begins on Monday.

Obama’s endorsement is, in fact, a license to print photos of Johnson and the president – real ones, no digital retouching necessary — in whatever fashion that pleases the congressman.

A total 322,301 people in DeKalb County cast ballots on Nov. 4, 2008 — 78 percent for Obama.

There is probably no need to note that Johnson was the first member of Congress from Georgia to endorse Obama in the 2008 campaign.

Two points here. First Johnson must have asked for the endorsement, a sign of weakness in an incumbent. Second point is, Obama I hoped convinced Mr. Johnson that Guam was not in danger of sinking.

Anyone who knows Georgia politics knows this is a big win for Hank. Obama is probably the most popular figure in the Fourth District.

You have to wonder what Vernon and Connie really think they can get done here. Lightning would have to strike for either of them to unseat Hank.

Vernon has zero appeal in North DeKalb and with the Obama endorsement is HIGHLY unlikely to cut into enough of Hank’s support in S. DeKalb to win. Connie has no money.

Obama wouldn’t put his prestige on the line here if the White House weren’t very confident Hank will win.

Thank God O’bama endorsed Hanky. The O’bama endorsement carries with it a defeat certain.
So long HankyPOOH….Good luck with your new job!
You and Vernon can spend your days together on his 133 acre farm. I am sure the farm animals will be so happy. Nothing like facing loosers on a daily basis.

Does anyone really think President Obama really believes one word of his endorsement? After that “Guam” narrative people should be running away from this guy.

Unless this is Obama’s master plan…….. Fill congress with people too dumb/ignorant to fully express themselves using proper english…That way Obama can eventually so whatever he wants…. Or was it a crack pipe that Johnson was puffing on? No matter. This guy is a fool. Vernon on the other hand is a crook…………. Kind of a toss up come voting day huh… Dekalb can do much better if only they would ignore the racial aspect of political campaigns. This situation reminds me of the Cory Booker v. Sharpe James Mayoral Campaign in Newark, NJ.

“Every man is born an original, but sadly, most men die copies.” Abraham Lincoln Such is politics in black America……. Too many players afraid of accountability and high standards. The game stays the same as a result.

Is it true that Hank Johnson doesn’t like going to Miami? I hear it is because he has a fear that if enough people jump at the same time in South Florida that it will create a diving board effect and throw Miami into the ocean.

The only comments that matter here are Democrats from the 4th District since the primary will decide who goes to Congress. So, the rest of you morons can just go back to your grand oil party and keep rationalizing why it is okay for so many of your leaders to spend all their under the Gold Dome time chasing women they are not married to.

The solution to having a congressman who believes Guam will capsize is to vote for Republicans in the 4th. And if you don’t live in the 4th, volunteer to help out and donate money instead of just sitting happy in your safely drawn district. http://www.dekalbgop.org

I live in the 4th, I’m not black and will certainly vote for Johnson.

Rep Johnson has represented the district well. He is do something that has been talked about for years, cleaning up Memorial Dr., or ironically “Cynthia McKinney Parkway,” (McKinney was a disaster.)

With his help they are about to bulldoze a bunch of slum condos that blighted a huge section of Memorial Dr. They are building a large park and are transforming the street scape there. These are the things that bring life back to an area. They produce real, tangible results.

Of course some of the jokes are funny, but most of the voters are well aware of the good work he is doing. He’ll win by a landslide.

It’s interesting to see how most of the folks commenting here are not interested in real analysis of the race; they just want to get in their snarky little digs at whatever side they have decided to detest.

Those who really know Georgia politics know this is a coup for Hank and will the task facing Connie and Vernon damn near impossible.

Liz Carter is doing a good job getting her name out there but the structure of the district just won’t give her a win. So props to her for working hard, but it really is a safe Democratic district.

And it wouldn’t surprise me now if Hank ends up running unopposed in the primary. Both of his challengers are broke. One is virtually unknown, the other will get no white votes and is therefore unelectable. Love him or hate him, Hank’s gonna win, y’all.

Tigerman – so the only comments that count on this thread are by Democrats? In what state, let alone country, do you think you live? The Grand “OLD” party is going to YANK HANK, and I’ll applaud their efforts and support them financially. Seriously, does he have any credibility left after the Guam comment? If you think he does, then you deserve to live in a district governed by such stupidity.

Danny X – He will not win by a landslide. Sit back and watch.

The GOP has zero chance of picking up Hank’s seat. Not one political analyst has implied they will, and not one 2010 election projection map even lists the seat as being in danger.

I think you should really give a lot of money to Hank’s opponents though! What an investment!

Really, the GOP needs the money to go to candidates that can win. Seems they are a bit short of cash. The Democrats raised just under $10 million in March compared to $8 million for the Republicans. House Democrats ended the first quarter with $26 million in the bank compared to $10 million for House Republicans.

Along with the economic “Muslim Miracle” taking shape, this huge Republican November is shaping up to be all Republican fantasy. As usual.

Vernon Jones is very sleazy. Even if he hasn’t been convicted of anything, he has too many question marks on his record for me to vote for him. He’s officially a racist, convicted in absentia by the county losing a reverse discrimination law suit due primarily to comments and policies instituted by the CEO, Vernon Jones. Being sleazy or slightly crooked doesn’t make you incapable, though. Just look at Bill Clinton!

I don’t know enough about Connie to form an opinion. That’s bad for her. Being memorable for questionable episodes (like Vernon Jones) is probably better than being completely forgettable.

So yeah, Hank is dumb as an ass. I think a smart crook has the ability to do a lot more damage in office than a lower intelligent reasonably honest person. I’d vote for Hank.
