Mary Norwood to run for Fulton County chairmanship — as an independent

We knew that former Atlanta mayoral candidate Mary Norwood was running for something, given her recent Tweets about Fulton County taxation. But we didn’t expect this.

Former Atlanta mayoral candidate Mary Norwood. Elissa Eubanks/AJC

Phil Kent, that white-haired Georgia Gangster, reports that, at a Johns Creek GOP event last night, Norwood took to the microphone to announce that she’s running against John Eaves for chairmanship of the Fulton County Commission — as an independent.

Throughout her mayoral campaign, Norwood maintained she was neither blue nor red, but purple – though by the runoff, pressed by Democrat Kasim Reed, she was forced to emphasize her support for Barack Obama in the ‘08 presidential contest. Even so, state Democratic officials declared her a member of the GOP.

The result was that many Republicans were just as miffed. Such are the hazards of life in the middle.

Kent says he had his line ready, and told Norwood that he thought it gratifying that “you now appreciate Republicans.”

Here’s the link to her petition.

She is the perfect Tea Party candidate. Stands for nothing more than just being there or being the candidate who wins and gets preen. The scary thing is she could win . . .

Let’s not forget she won a plurality of votes in the Mayoral race, which is probably more Democrat than Fulton County.

Ha Ha Ha, now explain to the GOP why you were so adamant about stating your support for President Obama while running for Mayor in Atlanta. Mary, you’re a fraud, a fake, and a panderer!

LOL, General…

A two-headed monster with a dildo shoved through both noses could run against John Eaves and I would vote for it, strictly out of principle.

Obviously lots of folks don’t know anything about Mary. With her, there is an inverse proportion of size to energy and dedication. She’s the type of person that could make real changes in Fulton!

Go, Mary, go! We were for you when you ran for mayor, and we will be for you when you run for Council chair. Our county needs energetic reformers like you, and we hope that you will succeed against the status quo which has been so terribly bad for our area.

Fulton, do you remember the ad that John made – very racist in nature & included snippets from Shriley Franklin & John Lewis? If not then you are clueless.

Don’t like Mary but would vote for her over the crappy John anyday.

Why does everyone INSIST on labeling a person as a member of one party or another. Maybe they are just looking at the issues and don’t care about the stupid membership of Democrat/Republican that seems to divide us to the degree that we get NOTHING done.

I welcome the diversity, that is what makes our city great. But, Mary showed us in the Mayoral Race that she does not have what it takes to hold a major position. She is not polished enough, doesn’t have any new progressive ideas, and seems like she is running just to change the political landscape.

That’s not enough. She needs to work her way to the top, show that she can work with multiple people, and then she may even get my vote. Don’t think she is a bad person, but she seems confused about her political affiliation and her loyalties seem to be narrowly focused. That does not make the multitude of people happy with her.

@ NotSchooledInGa

If you had the slightest idea of which you speak, you would know that it was Eaves himself, in his campaign commercials last election, who played the race card and stated that ‘voting for the white guy would turn back the clock to police using firehoses and dogs against black folk’. Do a little research and engage you brain before your mouth next time. Thanks for playing, but no cigar for you.

Look deeper than the surface. She is being supported by North Fulton County to add an advocate on the Board of Commissioners to split Fulton County. Business owners and residents of North Fulton want their own county and they will not stop at anything to get it! So, get ready for what’s really going on…Milton County!

And of course she says she’s Purple! She used the Democrats to gain momentum in the Mayoral Race. How convenient can that be?

Enough with the “new progressive ideas” already. We need a Chair who will work to get Fulton on an even keel, especially when they loose all that income from the former North Fulton. And she’s no more confused about politics than I am: I have voted both for Dems and Repubs; I appreciate both parties and am also sickened by them at the same time. I know Mary Norwood, and I say you Go girl!

Cutty the Clown Fulton County is gonna fight tooth & nail to make sure that Milton County is never formed. You should know that without North Fulton Fulton would nothing more than a rotting dump. Almost 50% of all revenue for this county comes from the North – you guys hate us but love our money.

Curious, Milton’s a done deal, and Eaves, along with Andy, John and Shirley, sealed the deal. Mary is not about Milton, but she could help us get through the mess that its creation will cause. I have no such confidence in Mr. Eaves.

Curious KJ

@ MiltonMan ~ Wow! Your tone is so negative and unnecessary. This is a discussion with intelligent people. First of all, the rest of the county is not a rotting dump. There are viable businesses and communities that have existed for many years in South Fulton County. But here’s the problem, it has been those who live in the Northern sector of the county that have separated themselves from the rest of the county. If “hate” exists its because of senseless comments like yours.

If we all realized that regardless, we all need to focusing on making bette communities as a whole then we’ll fair better as a State. Our school systems are next to last in the country. Our State has just cut the Arts program (which will affect all of us). We have more counties than any other State in the Union. Adding another county isn’t the solution to our problems. We need more unity amongst our counties and communities. We also need to hold our elected State officials accountable. We have a lot of work to do.

It’s too early to tell what will happen in the Fulton County Commission chairmanship race. Norwood had a good fight for the mayor of Atlanta. I like the idea that she’ll run as an independent- so she’s not beholding to any political party, as the political parties make a MESS of everything. (I’m not saying that she won’t make a bigger mess- but at least she’ll be a bit more free to pick and choose elements from each party that are practical in making Fulton County better.)

As for the possible separation of Fulton County… considering how North Fulton is well developed and South Fulton is not, it may be in North Fulton’s best interest to stick around. I’ve rode around South Fulton and found pretty sizable mansions that are comparable to those in northern end of the county. South Fulton will eventually become just as developed and affluent as the north end. Just like it took the northern end some time to get developed as it is, the southern end will take some time as well. Given that Fulton County is the core of the Atlanta metro area, the southern end’s rural areas can’t stay like that for long. Development will come, whether it is wanted or not. With that development, South Fulton will become very much so viable and the return on investment will come.

However, should the separation take place, the rest of Fulton County will still survive- perhaps actually thrive and become even better than it is now. As I just stated, the development of South Fulton will come- and so will that return on investment. With a smaller county, the return on investment will be higher for the areas that are still Fulton County.

MiltonMan- You’ve had a republican legislature for 8 years. What are you waiting on? With all the real estate speculation going on up there, Milton County will follow its past and be bankrupt in a few years. “Go for it”.

Obviously those saying how much South Fulton is dump have never driven through the area. Just as many mansions off Butner Road near Wolf Creek as there are in North Fulton. AND the area is undeveloped, so we can have adequate land use so Camp Creek Pkwy won’t eventually look like the crappy 400 in the morning.
