Dead Marine’s dad ordered to pay protesters’ legal fees

If Democrats were smart, they’d set up an immediate fund for this father.

If Republicans were smart, they wouldn’t let Democrats beat them to it.

Here’s the take from the Associated Press:

BALTIMORE – The father of a Marine killed in Iraq and whose funeral was picketed by anti-gay protesters from Kansas was ordered to pay the protesters’ appeal costs, his lawyers said Monday.

On Friday, Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit ordered Snyder to pay $16,510 to Fred Phelps. Phelps is the leader of Topeka’s Westboro Baptist Church, which conducted protests at Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder’s funeral in 2006.

The two-page decision supplied by attorneys for Albert Snyder of York, Pa., offered no details on how the court came to its decision.

Attorneys also said Snyder is struggling to come up with fees associated with filing a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court.

The decision adds “insult to injury,” said Sean Summers, one of Snyder’s lawyers.

The high court agreed to consider whether the protesters’ message is protected by the First Amendment or limited by the competing privacy and religious rights of the mourners.

This is a total disgrace. So the extremist right wins and a guy who lost his son in support of this country has to shell out $16k to a group of extremists? Thanks GOP, Christian Coalition and Tea Party, sounds like some of your members.

What part of free speech don’t you folks understand. Phelps is wrong to harrass funerals, but he has a right to do so.

I’m not saying Fred Phelps doesn’t have a right to harrass funerals, however sick that is. I’m saying no father should be forced to pay a dime to a fellow who violates the sanctity of his dead son’s funeral — not one killed in Iraq.

Get real.

This has nothing to do with being Republican or Democrat. I am sure that both sides were represented in the protest. But I would imagine that there were more left wing democrats there than republicans.

The entire thing shows a complete disrespect for our soldiers and the sacrifices that they make. Yes even for idiots that protest at their funeral. The protesters will be first in line begging for someone elses son or daughter to fight and deffend those freedoms when the turbin headed war mongers pull another 9 11 ….

What part of “freedom of speech” involves someone else literally having to pay for it, Keith? I can’t even wrap my head around the concept of having to pay for PROTESTERS.

Fred Phelps is disgusting and he is not a Republican or a Tea Party persona and he doesn’t act like a Christian. You, on the other hand, certainly think like a Democrat/Progressive/buffoon.

Republican turned Democrat, those protestors were not GOP, tea party or Christian coalition they are an extremist sect of Christianity. This has nothing to do with political parties, it’s about a crazy church in Kansas, which by the way holds “baptist” in it’s name but is not Baptist at all. Do some research and find out all about how many of us real Christians are trying to stop this church and its horrific and embarrasing protests.

Dear Republican turned Democrat,
You should put down Alinsky’s book “Rules for Radicals” and try to use your brain. Fred Phelps is not Right Wing or a conservative or tea party or left wing, or liberal or democrat. He is using plays out of Alinsky’s book just like you are. What is Fred Philps? He is a Religious extremist in the same league with the Muslim extremist who attacked us on 9-11. Get a life.

I’m just sick of the whackjobs coming from the right who all claim to be patriotic, Christian, etc etc. If the GOP would have their whackjob constituents just shut up, they might win something again. Their true agendas come out through their right-wing nuts.

It’s ironic that when the GOP loses a cause, they cry armageddon and how the world is going to hell in a handbasket. That IS the American way, it’s called voting. Just because you lose doesn’t make the President a marxist or terrorist.

Phelps is a closet homosexual, I am pretty sure. He is ashamed of himself and angry. My question – where were those bike riders who usually drive Phelps nuts? I think that is a riot personally!

BTW, I’d like to see a bipartisan bill protecting peacefulness at funerals. Nobody deserves to have their funeral protested at…people’s first amendment rights should not impede another person’s ability to grieve in peace.

Shame on the court for putting the costs on the father too…

Sounds like we need another Oblah-blah bailout – I am frankly shocked that Oblah-blah/Peolsi/Reid have not offered up a bailout bill for ‘activists’ at funerals before.

Maybe if the ‘activists’ form unions and write big checks to Oblah-blah, they would have carte blanche to disrupt funerals in the future.

As the book of Revelations says, we live in a time of “signs and wonders”.

I find it very ironic and quite bigoted that liberals automatically pin this guy as a right wing conservative Christian. Note this idiot protested military funerals all during the Bush years. He has a record transcending partisan politics. But the so-called enlightened and tolerant Left tries to pin this guy as being on the religious right solely because of a gay issue.

I think the comments expressed here are indicative of what the Left truly is. They claim to be so tolerant and open, but are kneejerk and hypocritical. And it does not surprise me that Galloway would turn a funeral into some sort of partisan competition. This is quite sad.

Anti-gay terrorists have been funded by the Heritage Foundation which has also sponsores Tea Parties, Hannity concerts, defense funds for Scooter Libby, etc. Remember the context here, in 2006 GWB was refusing to allow filming of returning caskets to lessen the visual impact of the war.
I hope the Supreme Court hears the case and overturns the three judges’ ruling from the appellate court. Snyder shouldn’t pay this. The life of his heroic son was payment enough.

Good work, Galloway; now every Republican believes that Phelps is a Democrat and every Democrat believes Phelps is a Republican.

While Phelps and his extended family (aka The Westboro Baptist Church) do hate gays and that is the stated reason for their protests, and hating gays more than Democrats is the preferred position of the Republican Party, beyond that, there really isn’t any connection between Phelps and Republicans.

Some of you are just trying to push an agenda.
Truth: Phelps claims to be a Christian.
Truth: No Evangelical Christian Denomination in the US condones or agrees with anything Phelps does.
Truth: I am gay, a Christian, and a Republican, Right Wing, Conservative… whatever you wanna call us.
I choose that political position based on my beliefs and how the party stands to protect my beliefs such as abortion, size of government, and other things.
Before the democrats and liberals start name calling, they should know that Conservatives at large do not believe like Phelps does. Phelps is actually a democrat if you will do some research before you start speaking. There are a lot of people claiming to be Christians, just as Obama did, and then didn’t, and then did, and then didn’t again….. Bill Clinton claimed to be a Christian. Both were democrats. And both brought a bad name to Christianity if they truly believe they are Christians.
