We’re starting to see some worry that anti-Washington sentiment may be hurting conservative states in the census. This from the Houston Chronicle:
As of Friday afternoon, only 27 percent of Texas households had filled in and returned their census forms — well below the national average of 34 percent — according to computer data from the U.S. Census Bureau….
Contrary to historical trends, some of the toughest challenges facing the agency responsible for measuring the nation’s population are not from counting the traditionally undercounted groups such as African-Americans and Latinos. Instead, a new and growing threat to an accurate national head count is coming from anti-government conservatives who may not fill out their forms to protest against “Big Brother” in Washington.
“There’s a general distrust of the federal government at every level, starting with Congress and the president, all the way down to executive branch agencies,” says Rep. Mike Conaway, R-Midland.

It is good to see the idiot conservatives finally doing something right. Lets not fill out the census since it only hurts those populations who are eventually under counted and then under representative. What more can the rest of America ask for. They don’t appear to be to smart but I guess they have it all figured out.

If some of you with predispositions would actually listen and read, few people are advocating boycotting the census (even though it’s arguable that Presbo’s highjacking of the census process is suspect). Rather the writer points to a real problem…i.e. that a significant part of the productive working population in this country has a new and deeper distrust of and animosity toward the current government.

Well, instead of giving them 15 (or whatever) Representatives, let’s give them the 3 that the Census says they should have. That seems to be what they want.

It is pretty obvious that most of these tea baggers are not very bright. If they want to defy the Constitution and not be counted, and then end up being under-represented in Congress, the state legislatures, and local government, I’m all for it.

So much for actually following the Constitution as the right wing nuts keep spouting. I bet they haven’t even read the Constitution or the bright ones would know better. But that is great. There will now be fewer right wing loons in DC due to their own idiocy. Too funny. I love how they outsmarted themselves this time.

Old Hippie I personally object to the constitution being thrown down as a mat every time some lib or conservative gets their butt in a wad. My form will go back in with exactly how many people live in the home. That’s all the information they need, and I believe it’s all that is required by the Constitution.

Oddly enough, the Constitution does not simply provide for a headcount. It provides for an enumeration “such manner as they shall by Law direct.” We have, by law, directed the 10 questions to be answered by all persons. In fact, the very first census in 1790, overseen by the same folks who wrote the Constitution, had questions about race, gender, and economic position. So, no, the total number of people living in a household is not the only piece of information required by the Constitution to be returned, and I think you’d have to be either very paranoid or very self-important to think there is risk in answering the rest.

Why are they so scared to fill out questions about race? Scared of too many “Brown people?” hate to break it to Texas but if they are scared of a foreign invasion threatning the American way of life Texas would be ground zero, is english even spoken there anymore, Census or not all you have to do is go there and look. The funniest part is they dont realize not turning in their forms distorts the numbers even more against them than they actually are.

BEN:
Oddly enough, the Constitution most certainly does call for a census. As amended by the 14th Amendment, Article 1 Section 2 reads:
“Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed. The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct.”

Right. It very definitely calls for a census. But it is not only limited to a simple head count. The framers made very clear that it was up to the Congress to set the manner in which the census would be taken and what exactly would be asked. That was my point.

Don’t like the Second Amendment? Just confiscate the firearms.
Want to require that people buy health insurance (or the product WE deem you should buy?), no problem–we’ll send a few of the IRS’s 16,000 new agents to ensure you make the right decision.
I’m still searching for the part where Census respondents are required to list their race, whether their home is owned “free and clear”, their phone number, etc.

I think part of the fear of the Census is that it is going to show in hard numbers what many of the tea-party types already sense: White people are closer to no longer being a majority than current projections indicate.
I don’t mean that to be a hostile statement. Fear is an instinct that has an evolutionary purpose and to condemn it is to condemn part of what makes us human. But this fear will not serve to advance the species; it is merely the paroxysms of a dying cohort (note the average age of the crowds at the tea party rallies).

There is a real 2010 census problem that no one is talking about. The United States Postal Service and the Census people have failed to have enough forms delivered early enough so that citizens can fill them out on time. I live in Warner Robins, GA and if there is a 2010 Census going on, you would not know it by the few forms that have been delivered. The Census people and the USPS are glad most people are paying attention to those who are returning partially completed Census forms in protest of some imaginary evil. It means no one is asking where are all the census forms that should have been delivered by now.

To blackbird13, What exactly do you think is a Tea Party type? Tea Party members are no different than the anti war activists in the 60’s and 70’s, citizens who stood up and let their opinions be heard, and that’s the American Way. We should respect each others’ opinions, listen and learn from each other. Tea Partiers are just independent thinkers, responsible, working Americans. The Tea Party protests and the anti Census rhetoric has nothing to do with RACE as you want to portray it. Democrat members of Congress and the Senate and their leaders, Pelosi and Reid, are mostly White Folks in case you haven’t noticed. Open your eyes to the fact that the Democrat led federal government is hijacking our economy. I am decamping for an ex-pat job abroad in a developed nation. You can stay and pay more and get less. There may be a correlation but it isn’t because of a desire to avoid sending in the form. As usual with such documents (I run into it often) the people making out the form don’t pay attention to what it says. They throw in these little quasi glitches and literate people read it and try to follow it. Then get called a “conservative” Backlash. NOTE: The census asks for the name of everyone staying in your house April 1. With a family as laarge and diverse as mine… I seriously won’t know that until April 1. So if you want the form mailed before April 2, don’t put that in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You just struck at the very HEART of this uprising in angry White folk. The crux of the entire deal with Obama being President, health care and immigration is that the (racist and insecure) Whites have come to the realization that this country has changed demographically. They have a grave fear that they are actually in the minority when you stack the sheer numbers of non-White bodies to White bodies.. and it is F’g them up in the heads. They cannot take it. This is why they are losing their minds because their system of White supremacy is threatened.
You can say what you want, that IS what it is. And people need to start being honest about it. But I wouldn’t expect anything different. Honest discourse is not one of the United States’ strong suits.

this is hilarious. i don’t believe the houston chronicle. the only fact is that 7% less forms than “expected” have been returned in Texas up to this point. Texas is huge. i filled my census out the day i got it to get it over with and so i wouldn’t misplace it. do you really think that the 7% are white conservatives? it’s 1 bit pure speculation and 2 bits wishful thinking. now if there is national data that can prove this, show me. but to think that Texas conservatives would be less likely to fill out the census than georgia, new york, or any other state conservatives just doesn’t jive? truth is i remember the when the numbers didn’t meet expectations, so guesstimation was allowed. i’d bet that 90% of the 7% are illegal aliens of which Texas has the second largest number next to California. i’ll also bet that by the time this winds down that the gov’t party line will be, the census does not reflect an accurate count because minorities and illegals feel threatened to fill it out. so we have to guesstimate their numbers for accuracy and proper representation. this is a fact. no matter your political viewpoint, to think a mail in census will yield a proper headcount is naive. i do know this fact. part of the census is contrived to inflate Post Office mail numbers. i rec’d a letter telling me the census would be mailed, then the census arrived less than a week later, then another letter telling me my census had been mailed, then i mailed the census back. i’m now waiting on the letter either to remind me to return the census or the one thanking me. so we have 2.50$ just on me that’s been spent so far just in postage. hope these same people run healthcare.

I agree wholeheartedly with upeoplernutz. I have an MA, I’m self-employed, spent 13 years in the US Army, have never been unemployed, have never been on the dole, I pay my taxes and I pay a lot more than most of the tea partiers make in a year. I’m trying to figure out who these people are. Have they never been abroad and seen what paying a bit more in taxes gets you? Decent roads and infrastructure, healthcare, education (as upeoplernutz states) and when you go to a public office such as DMV, they can actually do bureaucratic math: 6 tellers for 6 windows, no (or very little) waiting. The inefficiencies the tea partiers and other right wing nuts talk about are nothing compared to the time we waste having to wait in line at understaffed government offices as well as the money we waste getting alignments and replacing tires and shocks worn out on our cars from potholes in our highways. Our national parks are crumbling and they talk about user fees to cover them and I say fine as long as I get my part back from their wildlife management fees and the salaries of game wardens. When you start slicing the budget that fine, you’re always going to find waste, but you try t o minimize it and move on, not react by slashing budgets and spiting your own self.

My guess is that very few of the Right Wingers have even read the Constitution, much less understand it fully. I spent 20 years of my life in the military service (the majority of it overseas) defending it and your rights under its provisions.
Judging by all the False political emails being sent by Right Wingers, I cannot see how they have a truthful grasp on how life in this world operates. We buy them books and send them to school, but they are just too hard-headed to learn.
The really sad thing is that they are allowed to vote.
The bright light is that perhaps they will not mail in their COMPLETED census form and lose their voting right (their Representative in our Republic).

go to chron.com. they have a map with return percentages. they even try to lie about the results. highest return rate is from upscale neighborhoods and suburbs with the lowest being high concentration low income apartment areas. the most consistent rate of return is from areas where the concentration of home ownership is the highest regardless of race. the results are way to premature. they have the city broken down into such small areas that a handful of new forms will make the % move quickly. just like the New York Times best seller list.

Unfortunately our government has sold our Personal Identifying Information (PII) obtained from the census to private data brokers such a Acxiom., Lexis/Nexis, Choicepoint, etc. These government contractors are supposed to keep the PII confidential,l and only use if for their database connections to law enforcement and homeland security. These same businesses, ironically, also have direct marketing services and ties to data brokers who sell your PII to anyone that wants it. This has been going on for years.

There will be even more frothing mouths, even more venom, even more hatred and nothing short of wild, rabid animals taking to the streets, rioting and causing mayhem.
At this point, I’m ready to give them a state in our country that they can try to govern for themselves. How about Alaska? There’s plenty of land up there and it’s the home state of their beauty queen idol. Then once they’ve become over-populated from teaching only abstinence and banning abortions, have a high suicide rate from self-hating homosexuals who are treated like diseases, have destroyed the environment because they have no standards to prevent that imaginary global warming thing-y and have run out of land from building too many churches, maybe then they’ll see how great they really had it here.
Morons. They have finally shown their true colors, and I say we vote every last one of the Repukes out of office.

I fully expect plenty of useful, meaningful things can be done with that knowledge. Quit whining.

Actions like these show how narcissistic people on the far right are – they care only about themselves, their values and their money and could give one crap about the rest of their fellow citizens.

The census became a joke when the one of the first actions taken by the President was to have the White House’s hand involved in the census. The census is supposed to be a count of the people by a non-partisan entity. So by hiring ACORN workers to help with the census, and for them to have control over the census, they are essentially trying to set up themselves to never lose another election again. That is why people are against, not because of some paranoia, or stupidity. The pure stupidity comes from all of you who don’t understand what is going. Half of you probably voted for Obama because it was “the cool thing to do”. The other half probably did because you thought he would give you a car. This Congress and White House are doing everything that they possibly can to destroy our nation for one simple reason, they don’t like it. All they like is power and by controlling the census, they are attempting to ensure power for years to come.

In response to you comments about “stealing from people who work to give to people who don’t, is totally unacceptable”! Are you speaking about the folks who sipped mint juleps while others toiled their fields? Or are you talking about government officials and large corporations who “perpetrate” war to (and I know you hate this term) shift wealth form your pockets to those whose pockets are already bulging? Do yourself a favor and read THE PEOPLES HISTORY OF THE U.S. FROM 1492-PRESENT. You’ll get a clearer picture of how the bulging pockets since the founding of the U.S. have manipulated small minds like yours for their own benefit. Or read WAR IS A RACKET by decorated veteran soldier GEN. Smedley Butler to see how the rip off of taxpayers money didn’t start with your friend Dick Cheney when he got no bid contracts for his buddies at Haliburton. By the way, I didn’t hear your outrage when that started “Good Buddy”! Fact, the U.S. is $12T in debt, the U.S. has spent $12T on the military in the last decade and we ain’t any safer from a “terrorist” than we were ten years ago. Actually, to clear up Ben’s misrepresentation of the Constitution yesterday, the Constitution says that a count shall be made every ten years to determine “Representatives and direct taxes”. That is the reason for the census.
The “manner as they shall by law direct” that Ben tried to use as justification for any and all questions on the form goes to how the Congress determines how to go about counting people.
Why do you perform a census? To determine the split of representation across states.
How do you perform a census? Any way that Congress deems appropriate.
Constitutionally, all you have to answer is the number of human beings in your household – and nothing else.
And under race, I checked “Other” and wrote in “Human”.

Suggestion to the US government, why don’t you just add one page to our tax returns every year you would like to collect some kind of census? A few months ago, I came home to find that some one was at my house, and they left some census paper on my door. This occurred twice. I then received a letter telling me the census was coming and they wanted me to fill it out. I then got the census, and filled it out. Then a week or so later, I got a postcard saying I should fill the census out. I have lost count of how many internet and tv ads I have seen about the census. All the people, the ads, and postage has to cost multi millions of dollars. Attach it to the tax returns every 10 years, and hire some temps to sort them from the returns, and ease up on all the ad time. But knowing our country, this money saving idea is going to be flushed down some $200,000 golden toilet that Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosli use.

I seem to recall the previous administration’s “empty suit reading a teleprompter’ being blamed with everything from causing 9/11 to actually letting the levees in New orleans break.
Anyway, the biggest problem with the census, as I see it, is that the census form I received was more than two questions. The census should be fairly straightforward.

#2: Is everyone that lives at this address a US Citizen?

Takes all kinds … true statement. I’m quite educated, extremely wise and extremely tired of government at all levels – so if not conforming to a census is someone’s way of protesting – go for it. We have very little voice left oldhippie – we have very little of anything left in the way of freedom of anything – so I’m in the corner with anyone who says “enough is enough”. This country is on the brink of something – and based on the anger, protests, and ram down your throat government – I’d say the something is not very good. What happened last week in Washington set us back as a country 45 years. We aren’t united – in fact we are more divided than we were during civil rights. We can’t debate each other in this country because the leader doesn’t want debate – he wants what he wants and he will damn anyone who gets in his way. My vote in 2008 did not give him the right to steal my freedom, nor did it give him a right to take what I earn and give it to someone else. This is not my ancestors country anymore…and I am a sad oldhippie because of it.

Shane, you are an idiot. You have no idea what you are talking about. The red states contribute a net positive. Depends on what you call a red state, but if you look to the average of the past four federal elections, those red states pay in 27% more than the blue states. California alone is a drain. Meanwhile, the red states have most of the military sites, Alaskan oil and the majority of the east coast and gulf ports. We would also control the natural gas and food producing regions. The major loss would be west coast access points along with financial institutions in NYC.

Folks, not filling out the census forms is not the answer. FYI: When a state’s population increases significantly, electoral votes for that state can increase giving that state more leverage in the presidential elections. For example, as a result of the 2000 census the state of Ga picked up 2 more electoral votes moving us from 13 to 15. The way to change things is vote the wrong people out of office and put the right one’s in. And let me say one one thing while I am at it. When any nation turns from God and starts putting immorality about its own pleasures above what is right then that nation is in trouble. Remember all the fornication, homosexuality, abortions, removing prayer out of schools, removing the 10 Commandments out of public places and court rooms and the list goes on: America was a great nation, once, when it honored God.

The census is needed for determining how each state is represented in the House of Representatives. The census asks about age and race to help determine how federal money is distributed to the states for various federal programs. If Texans want to burden their state with higher taxes to make up the shortfall of those federal dollars, then they can do that. End the end they will do as we saw Sonny do recently with the Race to the Top; he went begging for federal money.

If you’re a conservative, this isn’t as non-sensical as you may think. The census drives funding mostly for things conservatives are against. Furthermore, if the census was widely known as inaccurate, it would (in theory) lead to the conclusion that more management and authority be distributed to the states.

Where were all these right-wing nut jobs when “W” gave us the Patriot Act? Two wars without funding it? Medicare prescription without funding it? Supporting amending the Constitution they so love to prevent same-sex marriage (yes, that is an intrusion of government into our personal lives)? Yeah, I didn’t think so. They are extremely selective about who they raise their voices against, and that just happens to be liberals. When conservatives tread on their soil, they don’t say a effing peep! Get over it! If you don’t like it, move to Haiti, Yemen or the Sudan if you want to live in a country where government has no control over its people’s lives.

“When states start seceding from the union, maybe then all you liberal hypocrites will start noticing that everything is not free and that stealing from people who work to give to people who do not, have not and will not is totally unacceptable.”
Interestingly enough the states that are more likely to secede are in the south; the states which receive more money from Washington DC than they send.
Minnesota, Massachusetts (well, all of New England), etc. — those dirty blue states — all receive less money than they send to DC every year. Maybe those blue, liberal, wealthy states should secede and let the south fend for itself. I’ll gladly move back north if that happens.

By the way, for all those people who think this is a “big brother” tactic or some other liberal plot, consider this. The NSA can and does know, for the most part, who you are, where you live, every internet site you visit, and all your financial information. The census is for the people that leave virtually no paper trail. I would echo that by not filling out the census, you only hurt yourselves. what about it–Are you inferring you would like government assistance? What cracks me up on the health care debate is that conversatives are so up in arms about it when it is about the only legislation that has come out of Washington, DC over the past several years that is actually good for its citizens instead of being good for big business. I just don’t get it. Why are conservatives okay with spending unbudgeted and unpaid-for wars in the Middle East costing us well over $2,000,000,000,000 (yes that’s 2 trillion–twice the amount of the healthcare bill) to date with many more trillions to come during the course of the wars and the associated healthcare costs for our brave men and women who have been permanently injured–both physically and emotionally? Why were you not screaming then about fiscal responsibility? You all are just a bunch of yahoo hypocrites.

Really Sad! Instead of doing what everyone yelled and screamed and name called about during the Bush administration they have just increased the name calling in a much more abusive and hateful mannor. The way I see it anyone that can’t rise above calling names really is just showing their ignorance to the rest of the world. There are plenty of problems and even more solutions if we and washington would work together but until the party in power realized that it doesn’t get 100% of the say because of who or what they are then we will never have real change. Never has there been such partianship and no one can deny that.

It is only good for the insurance companies… but you keep on believing that forcing 300 million people to buy health care is gonna be awesome, cause it won’t be. Do you realize that our healthcare system is already stretched thin as it is. All its going to do is make insurers more money and make it ten times harder for any of us to get treated.

@Jeffrey
Please don’t spout off when you don’t know your facts. This only damages your credibility. The numbers are bad enough without you inflating them. I also won’t bother correcting you on the gross misrepresentation of what universal health coverage will cost. No estimate is as low as $2 trillion.
I would direct you to a website whose soul aim is the disclosure of federal spending on the armed conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan:
http://www.costofwar.com/
And I quote…
All Counters
The numbers indicate all of the approved funding for the wars to date. These appropriations do not include funds to support the “surge” of 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan announced by the Obama administration on December 1, 2009. Conservative estimates suggest the surge will cost approximately $30 billion and we anticipate supplemental appropriations for this later in the year. When additional FY2010 war-related amounts are approved, we will adjust the counter so that it reaches the new total at the end of FY2010.
If you should compare the amount displayed on the Cost of War counters with the numbers available in our information sheets, please note that the information sheets include all war spending to date, the same number that the counters will reach at the end of the 2010 fiscal year.
Total War Funding since 2001
To date, $1.05 trillion dollars have been allocated to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This counter is designed so that on September 30, 2010, the end of the federal government’s 2010 fiscal year, the counter will reach that total number. Likewise, counters found here for states and towns will also reach their portion of this number at the end of FY2010. Please note, due to lower 2010 appropriations for Iraq the total estimated cost of war decreased since our last update.
Also, if you think this is published by conservatives, you are woefully mistaken.

The requirement in the Constitution for a headcount has been greatly exaggerated by this new census which asks all sorts of personal questions. I don’t want the government knowing the sorts of things they ask. Must they know how many people live in my house? Ok, fine. But nothing else. This government is doing all sorts of evil things on a daily basis (like bombing innocent people in Afghanistan, stripping away our rights at home, taxing the devil out of us, etc). I really don’t trust them or want their so-called “services”. I’d be a lot better off if somehow Washington, DC would just slide into the Potomac River. That evil city is a constant menace to our prosperity, liberty and security no matter which party is in power.
