On the Nathan Deal beat: Kind words from Newt Gingrich, but dropped from the millionaires club

For three days this week, U.S. Rep. Nathan Deal was the target of growing Republican recrimination over his departure from Congress.

Those who feared the loss of his vote could doom the fight against the Democratic health care initiative had already awarded him a Twitter hashtag: #blamedeal.

So it’s only fair that the north Georgia congressman enjoy a few plaudits for his decision to extend his stay in Washington for another three weeks, until March 31. The following quotes are from a news release issued this morning by Newt Gingrich:

“The stakes are enormous right now in Washington,” Gingrich said. “Nathan is a pro and knows that with the health bill vote looming, it is more important for the people of Georgia for him to be in the United States Capitol than on the campaign trail. Future generations of Georgians and Americans will thank him for that.”

And this:

“A true leader is someone who puts their country before their political future,” Gingrich said. “Congressman Deal is smart enough to know his vote to save one-sixth of the American economy is more important than getting on the campaign trail a few weeks early.”

But here’s a question: What if Democrats delay a U.S. House vote on health care until, say, April 5?

Also on the Deal beat, Roll Call this morning reports that Deal has amended his financial disclosure form, “dropping his minimum net worth by more than $500,000 and knocking Deal out of the millionaire’s club in the House.” A few paragraphs:

In his amended form, Deal appears to have changed the description and valuation of the Gainesville property where his family salvage business is located. On his original disclosure form filed last May, Deal listed Gainesville Salvage & Disposal twice, once as a family business worth $1 million to $5 million generating $50,000 to $100,000 worth of dividend income, and once as a property with the same value generating $15,000 to $50,000 worth of rental income.

The amended form retains the description and valuation of the family business, but replaces the rental description with an address — 1600 Athens Highway — and a property value of $250,000 to $500,000. A towing company operates out of this address, and it appears that Deal’s family has rented a portion of its property to this company.

Deal has acknowledged that the House ethics committee and the Office of Congressional Ethics are investigating whether the Congressman used his position to oppose an overhaul of the state’s system for inspecting salvaged vehicles. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Deal’s family business earned $1.5 million from 2004 to 2008 under the current inspection program.

Deal has acknowledged that he is a crook. Wonder why it took him 5 years to put the property he bought in 2005 on his disclosure. makes you wonder what else he is hiding, or if it was another sweet heart deal with the state

Which planet do these right-wing hypocrites live on? They want to protect Georgians FROM health care. Actually, they want to prevent Georgians from getting the health care they have.

Does Nathan Steal have the ability to project beyond the next 48 hours? Did he not anticipate that his departure would leave his fellow republicans in the lurch? Is this guy stupid or what?

Newt says “A true leader is someone who puts their country before their political future”.

Ahem, Newt: That is precisely what Deal is doing. He has simply delayed his resignation because he caught so much heat. Political future after this self-serving caper? Doubtful. Deal has shown his constituents just what little regard he has for us.
Goodbye, Nathan and be careful of the door on your way out.

Newt’s comment about a true leader is true. Coming from Newt it is laughable. I am chuckling over his giving me the joke of the day (not the statement, but from the mouth of who said it).

Nathan Deal did the right thing. That is more than you can say about most politicians today. He can win the Governor’s race later, but for now, thanks for standing up for our country first.

Republican Dawg?
He has resigned his seat. Who speaks for those of us in his district? WE have no vote in the house. The only reason he delayed his resignation is because people voiced their disgust with what he has done. So he’s going to stick around a few weeks to vote against the healthcare bill. What about the bills that will come after that?
You say he did the right thing. The right thing for who? Do you truly think this decision of his will improve his chances of moving to West Paces Ferry? I don’t.

PS–Republican Dawg,
Do you think that delaying his departure will make everything okay? That means he stood up for his country?
Horsefeathers. Not the word I wanted to use. I wanted to be more accurate.

Republican Dawg, do you really think he did the right thing for his country or is he just dodging further ethics investigation? If he has truly done nothing wrong why doesn’t he stick it out and if exonerated then resign. And mtnjacket has a point, is it honorable to leave his district unrepresented? I don’t have the answers to this but maybe you could enlighten me and others on this blog. There might be some information we are missing.

With Massa (D-NY) resigning on Monday, the vote count is at 216 again. The allegations of ethical violations against Deal are not worth the time and effort to investigate. I hope that for all Georgians, Deal will be our next Governor.

I agree Sarah.Deal has the right experience to help Georgia through these difficult times. I especially appreciate his military experience.

Nathan Deal’s real transgression was asking the Obama admin to quiet the questions about eligibility by releasing an official statement with documents rather than legally concealing virtually all of Obama’s past. Deal’s constituents wanted him to ask. The White House response was to charge him with ethics violations. Deal and every legislator knows that the Constitution requires that the parents of a president must have been citizens. It is both an old and current idea, since every senator signed, in April 2008, Senate Res. 511 attesting that McCain was a natural born citizen precisely because both of his parents were citizens. They all knew that Obama’s father was never a citizen, from Obama’s two autobiographies. That is the law, cited in dozens of Supreme Court cases. It is now an inconvenient truth, and Nathan Deal is poster boy for what happens to those who dare question the obvious. Nothing needs to be proven. The Emperor’s New Eligibility is a media and legislative coverup; while we claim to observe the law, the executive cannot rewrite history without an amendment to the Constitution. Obama will be our second president ineligible to hold the office, unless he is removed.
