A husband-and-wife team for governor and lieutenant governor?

Late last month, Carol Porter subbed for her husband at a forum hosted by a small-business organization that featured Republican and Democratic candidates for governor.

DuBose Porter, a newspaper publisher from Dublin, is the House Democratic leader. Carol Porter, who is general manager for the family’s small newspaper chain, did well. See for yourself here:

In fact, Carol Porter did so well that some Democrats are urging her into the race for lieutenant governor, which still lacks a Democratic candidate. Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, the Republican incumbent, is unopposed.

In other words, we would have a husband-and-wife team running for governor and lieutenant governor.

“She’s been approached about that. It’s true,” said Matt Caseman, spokesman for the DuBose Porter campaign. “She hasn’t made a decision. But yes, she’s considering it.”

And what does her husband of 26 years think? “He’s very supportive of anything Carol wants to do,” Caseman said.

Now, maybe this is a publicity stunt. If so, it’s one worth pondering.

Media outlets would be all over it. And his spouse’s candidacy would end attempts to talk DuBose Porter out of the governor’s race and into the lieutenant governor’s race. But there’s also the chance that Carol Porter would siphon off campaign contributions.

As of January, DuBose Porter’s campaign lagged behind three other Democrats in contributions: Roy Barnes, Thurbert Baker and David Poythress. (Porter was third in terms of cash on hand.)

One other Democrat, state Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond, is also thinking about the race for lieutenant governor – but has yet to make a decision.

I’m a good friend of DuBose and Carol’s. They are an unbelievable team. They work side by side, and they are the most honest people I know. Georgia would be in good hands.

In 1992 Bill Clinton carried Georgia with the help of Zell Miller whose floor leader in the Georgia House of Representatives at the time happened to be, DuBose Porter.

I wish I had thought of this myself! The Porter team will change the “old politics as usual” in the state of Georgia. We need them to stand up against corruption and put the people of this state back to work!

I have worked with Carol and DuBose for years now. First at The Courier Herald in Dublin, Ga. where Carol, as general manager, had the confidence to launch a paid digital edition model before even Rupert Murdoch. I am online manger for both http://www.courier-herald.com and http://www.porterforgeorgia.com, and I truly believe that if Carol was to get in the race, Georgia would have a powerhouse of a team. DuBose has the experience to lead Georgia into economic recovery and Carol has the passion and knowledge of the issues that would make her the perfect choice for Lt. Governor. This may seem unconventional, but I believe that passion, faith and common sense are what they have in abundance and what Georgia needs most.

I doubt the state would ever elect a husband and wife team, but I support it. DuBose is one of the most honest men I know.

I am a Republican, but “DuBose Porter works for me!”

Known both of them years. They are both honest, hard-working, and great parents. That being said, Carol does not have what it takes to lead the state. She is at times loony, and at others completely in another universe. Carol is no Hillary. But, as a political pr strategy, not a bad move.

DuBose has been my representative for 27 years. He has worked hard for all of us. He and his wife are two of the finest people you will ever meet and know. Their faith and family come first. They are both sick of the corruption and boy what a team they would make!! Just wait until you hear Carol speak. She is smart, articulate and very passionate about the issues that her husband holds dear. Those issues are dear to her also. This would be so awesome!!!

A one stop shop for all your government-buying needs! We are a democracy, not a monarchy. Add in the fact Dubose is arguable the most partisan politician in Georgia (Sonny is an equal-opportunity offender) and this play goes from bad to worse.

I think a couple Porters and their staffers have been on this thread. Notice how all the names look the same and the messages are nearly identical.

Mr. Porter should run for Lt. Gov. because he won’t beat Barnes and he won’t even come close to my man Ox.

So, here we have multiple people saying she should go for it because “they are great people and we know them, they’re great” but what are her credentials for a statewide office. Sure the lady made some pleasant comments but this is obviously the Democratic leadership urging this lady to be a sacrificial lamb in going against a popular incumbent. Not to mention, it’s mid February. If she were to get into this race how could she possible raise the money needed, especially when Cagle is raising more than a lot of the gubernatorial candidates.

As a small business owner, I find it very beneficial to have my spouse to help make important business decisions. I think having a governor with a wife to consult with as his lieutenent governor would also be advantageous. He is sure to get an honest reply to any questions on issues he might have!

This sounds disastrous. Even Hilary let Bill have his time, now she is having hers. Porter is a great candidate for governor compared to the other democrats and unlike the others, his wife has some charisma. But I can’t imagine this working out well for his campaign at all. He should actually consider running for Lt. Gov. because this can’t stop the fact that he is barely gaining support unlike Barnes or Baker.

She sounds like a winner! Maybe Dubose should run for Lt. Gov. where he can continue to be completely ineffective but with a lot less at stake.

Why would Georgians want to elect a person with ZERO experience?

Obama got elected on the idea of change and because he had little track record to attack. He has broken the majority of his promises (and I voted for him) because he changed his mind and he because his lack of experience meant he simply had no idea what was possible and what wasn’t. I don’t see how electing the wife of a career politician could end up any better. Actually, it could be much worse.

More than ever, I want Roy Barnes in office. He is the one candidate that can hit the ground running because he has already done the job before (and we were in a much better situation then if anyone remembers). Why go against the odds?

Porter is not a liberal democrat you are so off base that just goes to show you how much you know. He does have a chance to beat them all. Hey, so what if this is just for publicity

You sure don’t know Porter very well. He is not a liberal democrat and he sure isn’t corrupt. Folks are tired of the corruption. And Barnes and Purdue are killing our education system. I know I am a teacher and furloughs did not have to happen. I am for Porter and I can assure you that most of anyone in education is sick of Barnes and Purdue and OX who is he. He has done nothing. So what if this is a publicity stunt sure is giving them alot of free publicity and getting his name out there more and more. GO DUBOSE AND CAROL and oh by the way just listen to her speak she makes an impression everywhere she goes

Evidently there are many people in Atlanta thinks she should go for it because she hasn’t announced she was running for Lt Govenor. I think it is great idea whether for real or not. Sure is giving DuBose alot of free publicity and I mean all over the state. Corruption is killing our state. 45th in education, more prisoners in the prison system than any state. What does that tell you about Barnes and Purdue? Furloughs didn’t have to happen. He is one candidate that has the teachers on his side and education is the foundation. Barnes has already proven he is not for the teachers. DuBose Porter is the best candidate and for the first time in history I am pulling a Democratic ticket. I am voting for the man not the party. Purdue and Barnes and the rest of them will spend our money on their big campaign contributors and that will not happen with DuBose.

I have known Carol Porter for over 40 years. There is not a more honest two people on the face of this earth than Carol and Dubose Porter.

Let me add- I have never voted for a Democrat in a state or national office but if nominated the Porter’s will be my first. Highly rated by the NRA, Christians, small business owners, for property rights, for education, for rapid rail and transportation.. It is time for a change. We have got to look past the democrat label and make this happen folks. 6 years ago our state was one of the most prosperous in the nation, but the culture of corruption that was allowed by the Republicans has put us on the brink of bankruptcy and our schools are shutting down. Georgia we can do better.

For those of you who called them liberal or compared Carol to Hillary you are way off base.

Better be careful all of you die hard republicans I was once was one of you too but I will be pulling the democratic ticket for DuBose Porter and looks like Carol Porter too For the first time in my life I will be voting for the man not the party and it is about time the rest of you put your party aside and for once look at the man/woman and really look at their values, morals and character. Tell King Barns and OX and the rest of the candidates not to laugh to hard about all of this. The last laugh may be on them. just think all of this got started by all of you at the capitol in Atlanta she is being encouraged to run and if she decides to do this it will only be because she and DuBose and the boys feel this is what she should do. Noone will push her to make such an important decision as this.

I voted for Sonny, twice. Dubose is the ONLY DEMOCRAT that I have ever voted for (state representative). To my fellow republicans, he is the only one who has a true plan that will actually work. Before you make any critical comments, read what he has to say, and if you have the opportunity listen to what he has to say. Then ask yourself the question “DOES WHAT HE SAY MAKE SENSE” I believe it does. For some reason we have forgotten that GA has been the low “man” on the totem poll in education. Education is the key to get GA decent jobs. All of the unskill and semi skill jobs have gone over the border. And if we do not wake up, the rest of the jobs will be gone too.
