My AJC colleague Orlando Ledbetter has posted this from Mobile, Ala.:
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow doesn’t understand the controversy surrounding a Super Bowl ad scheduled to air on CBS on Feb. 7.
The ad was purchased by Focus on the Family, a conservative group that stresses marriage and parenthood.
The ad’s theme will be “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life,” according to the Associated Press. Tebow’s mother, Pam Tebow, shares the story of her difficult 1987 pregnancy. Instead of getting an abortion she decided to give birth to Tebow.
“I don’t think it’s anything that’s negative or anything like that,” Tebow said Wednesday after the South team’s practice at the Senior Bowl.
Some contend that the Super Bowl should not be used for political agendas.
“It’s a good time and place,” Tebow said. “There are a lot of people watching. It’s a great opportunity to share a very happy and special story about my mom fighting for me. There are a lot of great things in that.”

Man Admits Killing Abortion Provider. Tebow loves this guy from Wichita. So does Kurt?
The opposition is everyone outside the gigantic tumbleweed of crap we call the midwest.
This is the wrong place to try to pedal a political view. Pam Tebow is a liar. You can see it in her face when she gives an interview. The son cannot think for himself so Mommy has to make up his mind for him.

If they are paying. They are not hurting anyone, and all they wish to do is spread an equal message then what the hell is the prob? Of course you can have an opposing view if you wish to pay. Go ask Morgentler for the check to write. I am pro what ever your choice is. Who are these people who are affraid of the add? does sunshine frighten them too?

If someone wants to spend the money to oppose Tebow’s mom having given birth to him, then have at it. Maybe a group of Georgia alumni can pay for the ad.

I was very excited to hear that this would be shown in front of so many people. We need to keep fighting for those innocent lives who cannot say anything. God is the only one who gives life and orchestrates the time for us to leave this earth. I’m glad Tebow’s mom made the right choice to give him life. There are times when life is difficult, but it’s not all about the woman’s rights. Abortion is killing. If one can’t keep that little life, then others would love to adopt that child. That is the best alternative. I wish more people would look to that instead of going to a clinic to kill their baby. I hope this ad helps save many unborn babies….and changes the way our country’s leaders think about life.

What if it were a “Pro-Choice” commercial? Wait a minute it is a pro-choice commercial! His mom made a choice, and now he’s alive! Isn’t keeping a baby a “choice” too?OH wait I get it its only pro-choice if a baby dies. If that’s the fact why not call it “Pro-Death”?

Why is it that “Meat is Murder” and abortion isn’t? Doesn’t it occur to any of you that it’s a child? I believe in choice: The choice of a mother not to spread her legs in the first place. After that, it’s not part of “her body”, it’s in her body and she chose to put it there. A developing child get’s one thing from the mother besides a place to live for 9 months and that’s food. The unborn child is not getting blood from the mother, it’s got its own. It is unbelievable that there are those of you who cannot grasp the concept there is no difference between an unborn and new born child besides where it resides. I guess that’s the answer to the age-old question: How dumb can you get? Even Jane Roe Is Pro-Life.

Tim and his mom want to celebrate a choice she made by working to change the laws and forcing other women to do what she did?
TomJynx doesn’t get it that no one wants to force women like Tim’s mom to get an abortion but she wants to force other women to have babies. That is why we are pro-choice and she is anti-abortion.
Im_bonafide takes the usual route of blaming women without once in 10 lines of blathering saying maybe men shouldn’t have sex. This just shows how much this is really about controlling women’s bodies. Get a life.

He is good, I mean he’s really good but you know the way the media, the fans, and even his own family has built him up into this demigod, can only lead him to trouble down the road. He’s just a human being. “The Chosen One” is such an incredibly pretentious title.

They have the same right to purchase an Ad for pro-life as the Brewery Companies. Would there be such a stir if it was a pro-choice ad. Everyone is entitle to their opinion and someone is going to be offended no matter what the subject is. I think it took a lot of courage for the Tebow family to discuss something so personal.

For all the people complaining about this ad, it’s not like CBS is giving it away for free. Focus on the Family ponied up the $2,000,000 or whatever to pay for the ad to play, plus production. Is there a group that has the opposite view that wants to pay the money? They would have the right as well.

Dear Tom Jynx,
While your last statement (”Oh, wait I get it. It’s only pro-choice if a baby dies. If that’s the fact, why not call it pro-Death?”), is pure sarcasm, it is right on. Clearly, abortion is not a choice for the unborn. Many pro-lifers already do describe abortion supporters as being “Pro-Death.” Since Pro-choice is a euphemism for someone who supports abortion, let’s call it “Pro-Death. Also, let us remember that a baby in our country can be aborted right up until the moment of birth, even if there is nothing wrong with the child and even if the mother’s life is in danger. This procedure is called “partial-birth abortion.” Indeed, this procedure is barbaric and a sin against human life!
It’s time that we provide women in crisis with real choices, rather than just abortion.
I applaud Tim Tebow and his mother Pam for sharing their wonderful story, affirming life

While I agree that in this particular instance, choosing life was/is a good choice. Not because it’s Tim Tebow. It could have been someone else who isn’t an athlete. But, there are so many people having children that clearly are not fit to be good parents. Clearly, this guy has good parents that raised him the right way. But, there are people in this world that shouldn’t be here, weren’t planned to be here, and are a drain because they are here. Ignorance breeds ignorance. Pro choice.

Who cares what ad runs? If they have the money there is really no legal or ethical reason they shouldn’t be able to run the ad. If you disagree with the ad, fine. If you agree with the ad, fine. Why have we set ourselves up to be the thought police? Years ago there was a guy that would run for Governor every four years on the most racist and bigoted platform ever devised. He ran his ads in print and on radio and television. Nobody rioted in the streets. Nobody died of being offended. Nobody left town. Everybody laughed at his viewpoints and derided his positions. There are laws that prevent tobacco advertisements but not alcohol. I’m not in favor of either one but they are legal and it seems sort of anti-American to restrict those ads. Finally, if your viewpoint on controversial subjects is so weak you can’t allow dissent, how good of a viewpoint do you have?

Tebow’s mother decided to continue her pregnancy despite advice from her doctor — and I am sure there is not a single person around who is not absolutely grateful that he was born, she survived, and they are both living heathy and vibrant lives today.
And there are a lot of pregnancies that started out as really bad news. But when the child is born and becomes a beacon of joy and pride in the families lives, they oftentimes put aside any original thoughts of despair they felt over the start of the pregnancy.
But it is ultimately a moot point. What would things be like if Adolph Hitler’s mother had terminated her pregnancy?
Personally, I completely defend a woman’s right to be able to choose the option that works for her life and her conscience.
I believe we should show more interest in the sentient life that exists between birth and death. The world is populated with children living in horrible conditions, even in the United States. And what about the many elderly that do not get the care and attention they need and deserve?
Why does not all that fiery anti-abortion level of passion, resource, and energy get used for the benefit of the alive and breathing people around us who need us?

Why not spend the 2 million on orphans or whatever? Because as an organization they have as much right to spend their money as they deem, just as Oprah has the right to spend her corporate money as she deems. It doesn’t matter if I agree with the ad or not. What matters is that we still live in America, a melting pot of people, opinions, beliefs, religion and political viewpoints. @JB yes we could have an ad for the opposing view; however, whoever that party is needs to purchase the ad. It always amazes me that in this free market system that people are fine with ads that exploit women, promote alcohol abuse, condone infidelity, and so on. But when one woman made her choice to keep her child, she can’t tell her story? For all of the people who believe that it is a woman’s right to “choose”, let her tell about her choice. If you support a woman’s right to choose, then support a woman’s decision regardless of what she chooses. The group that bought this ad time deserves to be able to share it, just as Budweiser, Pizza Hut, and all the other companies will be given the opportunity to share.

Also @ all the people who said why don’t pro-lifers spend their money helping the families who are already here? Well interestingly, they already are. They spend millions of dollars every year right here in Georgia and across the United States providing resources for women and their children. The Beacon of Hope Pregnancy Resource Center and the Atlanta Care Center are two great examples. (Many families partner with the new mothers to help support them throughout the life of the child.) Another interesting fact, Focus on the Family actually has just partnered with the Colorado foster care system and other churches to help adopt as many children that are available for adoption out of the foster care system.
So if they are already doing what you proposed, what do you propose they do next with their money? Better yet rather than saying they because that is so broad and non-committal, what are you willing to do to help the children and mothers of America, with your money?
I would challenge you to find a local pregnancy resource center or adoption agency and support them monthly. Criticizing others is easy, yet with that same energy you could help be a solution to the problem.

Seriously people IT’S JUST A GAME, these are just commercials, at least this one has a positive message, love.
Most women I know were (and still are) guilt ridden over theit decision to abort ther child, I have days where I have to tell myself I made the decision for love. This April it will be 15 years since I had my abortion. Every time I see a teenager I feel a mixture of oh-my-what-did-I-do and what-in-the-world-would-I-DO-with-a-teenager!? I have been able to attend college and am now better equipped to be a responsible parent, and I feel the pain every day of the loss of my child. but I made a decision and I have to live withit, everyday. I can’t live in the past of what ifs.

@ Byron..PRO-CHOICE is a misnomer….if they were truly PRO-choice, they would acknowledge a person’s CHOICE to CHOOSE LIFE. There has to be more than one option for someone to have a CHOICE, ergo, in this instance, they must be to choose to GIVE LIFE to your child (pro-life) OR TO TAKE THAT LIFE AWAY (anti-life). Pro-choicers always kick up a fuss when someone says they CHOSE LIFE for their child.
Let’s face it, the planned parenthoods of this country disguise what abortion actually is. It IS the taking of a life. It is camoflauged by the term pro-choice. There should be an honesty about what abortion really is. IF they were to actually give the REAL facts, I am sure that many of the women who CHOOSE to have an abortion may reconsider. When I carried my daughter, she was a child, a baby, not a “fetus”. That is the language that is used in an effort to disassociate what is really happening inside your body. That makes it easier for people to have abortions…”it’s” just a fetus, “it” isn’t a baby, “it” isn’t human …YET

To the person who wondered “can we have an ad for the opposing view?” WE can have an ad if WE are willing to pay for it. The Super Bowl is a perfcet venue for the ad because as Tebow said “a lot of people will be watching.” If you want to get a message across you broadcast it to as wide an audience as possible. It’s called freedom of speech and free enterprise. Good for Tebow’s mom–although as a Georgia fan, my life would have been easier the last four years if she had made the opposite decision.

@ Mrs.D Thank you for your honest post. I know that for most the decision to have any abortion is not an easy one. Most of my friends have had them – and I have always been supportive because I know that the decision is not an easy one. WE ALL make mistakes in life and have difficult choices to make. And MOST of the people that I know that have had abortions DO think about that child. I can’t imagine what it must be like. But I don’t hink that institutions such as planned parenthood do anything to prepare you for what you will feel later. The environment today seems to want to make abortion like getting a root canal – it will hurt for a little while but you will be fine. They sterilize the process emotionally. They make it very off-hand, no big deal, everyone does it, etc. AS you know, it is a very difficult decision that has long term effects and needs to be taken with much more seriousness than I see people discussing. It is not simply about pro-choice.

@ byron, my point is that the pro-choice people do not embrace having a child as part of the choice. at least not publicly. whenever someone cones out with an ad endorsing the choice for life, the pro-choice people should acknowledge that that is one PART of a CHOICE. There are TWO choices….but they seem only to advocate one of those choices. they support those who choose to abort rather than to give life. If they only support the one, then it is NOT A CHOICE!!!

I hope you realize that if you had been aborted you would not be alive to post the selfish shortsided comment you just posted. My belief is that abortion is torture to the death for the innocent unborn.
God please forgive America for accepting abortion and please remember we have never had a chance to vote on it as a free people. Thank all for having the courage to stand up for the right of those who can’t speak for themselves–THE UNBORN. I doubt you would find many aborted who would be for it if they had an opportunity to express their views.
Thanks to the AJC for letting me express mine.

@susan, I agree, a friend of mine had an abortion last spring, I went with her for all the appointments, the whole process was so sterile and unfeeling, I had more emotional involvement at the vet’s office when my cat had to be put down. (not that a child is like a cat, but my cat was like my son, to me) I felt the same as I did when I had my abortion. In both situations I went in with two warm beating hearts and left with one (and a soaked hankie). At least at the vet they expected and anticipated the tears. At the clinic, with my friend, it was like I can’t cry, I might upset the other patients (and I was just there to be the driver and support for a friend.)

Well the problem with all of those that say that this is a free speech issue is that CBS has in the past disallowed groups that have bought airtime to air what they have called political messages. Abortion is a hot issue where people feel very strongly about it one way or another. If it really is pay to play it should be pay to play for everyone, not just whom CBS execs political views they agree with. And for the record I am pro-choice. To susan, January 28th, 2010, 10:26 pm:
I understand what you are writing. I think the problem here is that this ad is a product of the Focus on the Family generic right-wing religious political organization that ultimately seeks to make abortion illegal again. Not surprisingly, it also promotes anti-gay rhetoric.
I do not think a lot of people are perceiving it as simply a celebration of Tebow’s mother’s decision to continue her pregnancy and end up having a talented and handsome young man for a son. I mean, who would possibly not want Tim Tebow in this world?!
But it is seen as an attempt to promote the organization’s ultimate agenda to further erode the rights of women to have that choice. And people who advocate for that choice have been put on the defense for quite some time now.
It is never a controversy to have a child. It only becomes a controversy when a woman chooses to have an abortion.

Believe in Life- you worship GOD!! Believe you have a choice- you play GOD! What if your mom played GOD? By the way your president sponsored a bill to allow a bothced abortion baby to lay on the table a die.
Also the woman who was the president of planned parent hood resigned right after she witnessed a partial term abortion. What do you think about that? Celebrate Life because it is a gift and one day GOD will taketh it away!!

@ byron…i once knew a gut that said he would rather his girlf friend have an abortion than to know that there was a child of his out there that he didnt know…that is a VERY selfish attitutde. there are somethings in this life that are beyond YOU. And I think that most abortions are about what the public thinks….if you have an abortion nobody needs to know that you are pregnant…to have a child and give the child up for adoption makes your “mistake” obvious..to have an abortion enables you to hide it…of course it takes two to tango but men do not have to deal with that decision, but I think they should have a say in it

The absurd part is that in addition to the fact that they’re airing a Super Bowl advertisement about abortion, the host of the ad is a football player that hasn’t even made the NFL yet and most likely will not be a starting quarterback next year. Tebow, wait until it’s your day to come out and tell me my politics on Super Bowl Sunday. Wait until you’ve accomplished something in pro football. By coming out and doing this pre-draft, you show NFL fans how truly pompous and absurdly gratuitous your concept of yourself is, especially since pro scouts are seriously doubting that you will even be drafted as a quarterback. And the jump pass will never cut it in the NFL!

As one can see from the comments on this page, most are clear thinking people who have not based their lifestyle in total selfishness. Pro-life takes work, sacrifice, love and care…a baby that needs life. The comments coming from the pro-choice crowd are those who are engulfed in the total opposite…i,e. homesexuality is 100% selfish and produces a destructive population that is only concerned about personal pleasure albiet, sickness, OR, concerned about population control…too many people means less for me…Warren Buffet/Bill Gates have probably already donated the money for the homo-sexual add or a planned parenthood ad….they are the single largest financial contributors to planned parenthood abortion services…we can attribute about 25 million abortions just to their giving through the years. For every 1 child that is born through various pro-life services, 3 children are aborted.

Is this not the USA? Where we have Freedom of Speech and express? Have we lost those rights? Now every time someone says something “we don’t agree with” are just mention the names, Bush, Obama, or Tebow and its “”POLITICAL AGENDAS”! Please tell me whats not Political? Everything is…Every ad at Super Bowl is politicial for someone. I fought for this great Country but I have become ashame because our on citizens want to take rights away from us that we fought for.. Freedom of Speech is #1 for our Freedom to continue. Its time America wakes up again before we have another attack and war. God Bless the USA.If you don’t believe in God, Bless you too because I do. You always know when a “clear thinking” person starts talking for all the “clear thinking” people…
A speech by the morality police that doesn’t include divorce? Divorce has done far more harm to the US than gay relationships. A staggering 50% of all marriages fail leaving massive amounts of pain behind. Yet according to “clear thinking people” gay people are destroying civilization.
Divorce destroys families and friendships. It causes financial distress. Children are left in between bitter conflicts. Fathers are often not supporting their left behind children. Fathers are often not there for their children. People are forced to take sides and choose between friends they love.
I guess God’s another political agenda.

We Americans have a right to think and say what we please. I only question why CBS decided against an add that was pro-gay marriage. I personally support both Tebow and gay marriage…I also support anyones right to run an add for an opinion opposite my own…What a radical thought in today’s America

It’s highly likely that the Tim Tebow anti-abortion ad will contain some lies, or in the very least, lies of omission. There are some very important facts to keep in mind about the story Tim Tebow and his mother Pam will be telling:
Tebow’s mother claims that while she was being a missionary in the Philippines she contracted amebic dysentery and her doctors advised her that the antibiotics had lilely caused fetal damage and she should abort.
However, three problems: (1) Abortion was, and is, completely illegal in the Philippines. They are so barbaric that they don’t even care if the mother will die. (2) If the account is true, the doctors could have been sued for malpractice; there are approved dosages of antibiotics for pregnant women. (3) Pam Tebow is very much at fault; contracting this disease requires that you consume food that has been inadequately cooked or, in the case of raw veggies and fruits, not properly washed with safe water. These are things that she, as a pregnant woman, should have been aware of and taken care of. Otherwise, she’s as much at fault as a pregnant woman who drinks alcohol heavily during her prgnancy.
So the story they are likely to tell is false. She did not even have the choice of abortion, so she deserves no accolades for her “choice” because she had none. Had she actually chosen, then we could say “Good for you. You got lucky and your son turned out healthy.” But we could only say this IF she actually had the choice (which she didn’t). The point is: Choice is the key. If a woman chooses to risk her life so that her baby might live, then that’s her choice. If she chooses to say her life is more important than that of her fetus she has that choice also. However if choice is abandoned then all women will ne FORCED to accept every pregnancy – whether she’s a 15-year old who’s been raped by her abusive father, or a random woman who’s raped by a serial rapist stranger, or a woman who’s life, and the life of her child, is likely to end if she does not get an abortion. It’s immoral, unethical and inhumane. Most women to not choose to have an abortion. It’s a difficult, painful choice. But it must remain that – A CHOICE!
