Bob Barr: Republicans bear responsibility for some of Barack Obama’s security problems

Below is a Friday evening confrontation between Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly and former Georgia congressman Bob Barr, who thinks Republicans are overplaying their hand when it comes to criticism of the Obama administration and the Dec. 25 attempt to down a Detroit-bound jetliner.

“Really what their criticizing is themselves,” Barr said. “The problems long pre-date Jan. 20 of 2009, when the president came in.”

Republicans are overplaying their hand and making most of us sick in terms of how they treat our President. Shame on them for being sore losers.

How many crayons will come with the new Shrub book?

Is O’Reilly guilty of “coercion interigation” in this interview?

Barr, I was a Federal prosecuter and I know how the system works! Obviously OReilly doesn’t!

O’Reilly wants torture even though it’s utterly immoral and inefective.

O’Reilly wants only to talk about after the fact things when terrorists are already captured. What he is talking about has nothing to do with keeping them off a plane. Barr was discussing the State Department granting visas, and O’Reilly quickly changes the subject to torture. Outside of torture, Obama hasn’t changed much of Bush’s policies on national security. Heck, he sent more troops to Afghanistan.

Obama is doing something REALLY TOUGH on terrorists; he’s supporting tougher fuel-efficiency standards. Yes, that’s right: if you really want to stick it to Ahmadinejad and a lot of other hostile regimes, make oil less in demand. Of course, that was too TOUGH for the Texas wimps who ran this country for 8 years!

As usual, the right wingnut commentator makes a sweeping proclamation that “everyone knows…the Obama administration has dismantled the Bush-Cheney apparatus”, based on 3 anecdotes. Bob Barr rightly points out that these 3 items are not as “huge” as O’Reilly makes them out to be. In fact, the Obama administration has changed little of the Bush-Cheney strategy, and has even gotten tougher in some areas. But let’s not talk about that.

Rove’s handiwork is evident. It’s a complete double standard to attack Obama for not being quick enough to “pay attention” to the Nigerian bomber when Bush himself barely ever commented on the EXACT same situation with the “shoe-bomber”.

And why does every conservative commentator only talk about what Bush did “after 9-11″? Didn’t 9-11 happen on the Bush-Cheney watch?

Bob Barr is right. It’s obvious partisanship, and makes Cheney-Rove look foolish. Good try, O’Reilly.

Good for Bob Barr. Stand up to the folks who make millions fanning the flames of right-wing hysteria. Civility and common sense in the face of rabid fear-mongering. Good job! Hope you see now that the crusaders of Fox are quite willing to try to destroy you if you make even the slightest effort to be fair and reasonable.
