Rein in those lobbyists — after you have their cash

Fund-raising wasn’t the only reason Karen Handel resigned her job as secretary of state.
It’s hard to run as an outsider against your fellow Republicans if you still have an office in the state Capitol.

In a speech to more than 300 women at the top of the Perimeter, Handel decried the atmosphere “sex, lies and lobbyists” that surrounds the Legislature each winter.

My AJC colleague Aaron Gould Sheinin has the details here.

Signaling that the speech was the beginning of a theme, Handel quickly sent out this personal Twitter message, which picked up some Democratic phrasing:

Discussed the culture of corruption under the gold dome today. Went over very well.

You’ll remember that, when his ex-wife revealed that House Speaker Glenn Richardson indeed had an affair with a lobbyist, Handel was the first and only GOP candidate for governor to call for his resignation.

Handel also gave this quote to WXIA-TV, which may get more scrutiny as the campaign progresses, about the masculine culture that dominates the Capitol:

“To be told in my first days of being secretary of state, that the best way to get my legislation through in the Legislature was to make sure I had a young hottie as my legislative person, was rather disturbing.”

It’s clear that, if you’re a lobbyist – male or female – you’ll have a target on your back when lawmakers assemble on Monday. Some sort of ethics legislation is a certainty.

But first, to add to the humiliation, all lobbyists must be drained of whatever cash they have. As alluded to above, the ban on fund-raising by lawmakers and other state officials goes into effect as soon as the session begins.

One well-connected contact counted up 24 cash events scheduled for the first four days of this week, to benefit 42 lawmakers and caucuses. The beneficiaries can be found below:

Anyone who uses Dave Simons and Company as a fundraiser or political operative needs to be voted out of office. You’re corrupt if you use corrupt people…

“Some sort of ethics legislation is a certainty”? Do you mean meaningful ethics legislation, or just “some sort of ethics legislation”? Maybe, as to the latter; not bloody likely, as to the former.

At last – someone to challenge the Good Ole Boys Network.Karen Handel will be a serioushigh-quality contender if she keeps her cool and doesn’t become too strident against The Network, She can’t be a one-issue candidate. This said, add our sitting Governor, currrent candidates, many of the state agency heads and their lieutenants to that Network. That’s who running the corruption in our state – from financial ineptitude to extensive sexual misconduct. They’re all ole boys, but not necessarily good in any sense of the word.

Hey, wait, no matter where you’re from you go after Atlanta money?? :)
Well, okay, but if they take it, I don’t want to hear any Atlanta dissing during the session, LOL.

I hope Mr. Galloway will consider posting these on a regular basis or tell us where we can find a listing of these fund-raisers.

Is she really an advocate for more honest government?

As Secretary of State she was focused on the non-existent threat of voter fraud. Also, her insistence that we don’t need a way to verify the accuracy of our electronic voting system was very troubling.

Handel really is a crafty political opportunist.

Ya’ll this how it works under the dome: Male lobbyist gives money. Female lobbyist gives sex. Hard economic times means less money and more sex. State law requires financial disclosure statements be submitted every year. I suggest bill to amend that law to require sexual disclosure statement also. Then we can tell who is influencing who and how.

Wasn’t Handel’s first act as Sec of State to hire a lobbysist as her deputy? Didn’t that lobbysist work for former democrat Sec of State Lewis Massey and lobby for companies with ties to the Sec of State office. I must have missed her announcement that she would not take campaign money from lobbyists or from corporations with lobbyists. I’m sure she is not taking campaign money from any company or person who has business with the Sec of State’s office, right?
