Dominque Wilkins switches to Kasim Reed

My AJC colleague Ernie Suggs sends word that the Human Highlight Film has apparently added flip-flopping to his repertoire of gyrations.

On Thanksgiving evening, during half-time of the Atlanta Hawks – Orlando Magic game, basketball great Dominique Wilkins announced that he was endorsing Kasim Reed for mayor of Atlanta.

That’s fine.

But Wilkins’ endorsement comes less than a month after he recorded a robo-call for Mary Norwood, supporting her for the general election.

“In basketball, you just can’t show up for the game. You have to work very hard every day in practice,” Wilkins said on behalf of Norwood in the 24 second call. “Mary Norwood is someone who has always worked hard for Atlanta and not just on game day. Now it is time for us to help her.”

Listen here.

On Friday, from his hotel room in Philadelphia, where the Hawks are playing the 76ers, Wilkins said that since he recorded the call for Norwood, his political thoughts have changed.

“Mary Norwood is a very nice lady, but Kasim has been a friend of mine for a long time,” said the Hall of Famer, who played more than a decade with the Hawks and who is recognized as the franchise’s greatest player. “He is good people and I think he will make a great leader. He will do a great job of fixing some of the problems we have in Atlanta.”

Wilkins said he was initially unsure of who he was going to support for mayor. He said a friend of his took him to meet Norwood in October and he was impressed. But he said that since that endorsement, and watching the race play out, he decided that Reed was the better choice for him.

“He has the leadership skills that make a great leader,” Wilkins said. “I think he will do a good job in a long line in the good mayors of Atlanta.”

Efforts to reach the Norwood campaign have thus far been unsuccessful. But we’ll add any comments as we get them. Wilkins said he did talk to Norwood before announcing his switch to Reed.

“She understood,” Wilkins said.

It is still unclear who Julius “Dr. J” Erving, who endorsed Lisa Borders in the general election, is supporting in the runoff.

I’m trying to imagine how much whining and cursing there would be in responses to anyone saying “X is a White city/county/state/country, and should have a White mayor/commissioner/governor/president”. Ignorance and hypocrisy are only tolerated in Black communities? Pitiful.

@Sophie

Your comments resemble the distortions of Mary Norwood so much, it is uncanny. I will have to study the Parks issue a bit more before I comment on it, but your comments regarding the TADs and the Tax referendum are patently false and very misleading. As an active member if my NPU, the City Planning Department does a pretty decent job at informing neighborhoods about legislation and other initiatives that are being proposed and debated on the city and state level. It is at my home NPU where I stay abreast of all things political in the city.

As for you false claims that the TADs only benefitted Buckhead, if I’m not mistaken there are NO TADs in Buckhead. The closest TAD to Buckhead would be Atlantic Station and it is a cash cow for city revenue. The other TADs are: Westside TAD for Downtown, Perry/Bolton in Northwest Atl, Campbellton Rd, Martin Luther King and Turner Field. These areas are all centers of blight and delapidation and were on track to benefit the city until that Buckhead lawyer brought a lawsuit to the state challenging the constitutionality of TADs and won. His efforts were overturned by the voters in the state when Gov. Perdue let voters decided, just like Reed and others wanted to do about other tax-raising measures – let the citizenry decide. But the biggest issue of them all is : the measures you’re trying to hang Reed with – NORWOOD SUPPORTED!

Norwood has been squarely behind the TADs and letting the tax-payers decide what they want to spend their tax dollars on. This measure was supported throughout the state and have been proven to work across the country.
Part of my problem with Norwood and many of her supporters is the blatant misinformation that they spread for political gain. Listen, when this race really began to heat up earlier in te year I was open to all the candidates. Even though I was most familiar with Norwood because of her role on city council, I decided to take an objective approach to Borders, Norwood, Reed and Spikes. It was very hard, because Borders seemed very knowledgeable and Reed seemed to be a smart newcomer, but I was concerned with his ability to win because he was in the field with 2 better-known candidates. I ruled out Mary Norwood early on because her record on council was one of the weakest and I just wasn’t impressed with her attending NPU meetings and community functions. Even though I do not work in the political arena, I am very involved in my neighborhood and my views of a successful legislator is found in their ability to propose and pass legislation that benefit the jurisdidction where they are serving. I charge the chief executive with the responsibility of maintaining a good functionality on a day-to-day basis.

Honestly, Mary Norwood hasn’t done very much in her time on council. Much of the failed policies she now hangs on the administration she supported like the 2 pension hikes. Kasim Reed impressed me when he took the pension and made it his first priority next to public safety. Norwood has admitted publicly that she doesn’t understand the budget and she often complains of not being able to receive information from the city. Its funny that none of the other councilnenbers ever have these complaints. Hardworking councilmembers that aren’t looking to move up like; Felicia Moore and Howard Shook never complain about the lack of information.
Its troubling that Norwood and her ilk want there to be a magic pot of money that the mayor’s been hiding so they can show egg on the face of the administration.

Justin Weideman and a bunch of Buckhead business people (mostly Republican) want control of the city of Atlanta. This is part of the reason the State Democratic party got involved in this race, because of all the dishonesty and deceipt Mary Norwood has projected throughout this election season.

Come on now, anyone that can’t remember who they voted for in presidential elections has something to hide. I could care less if Norwood’s a Republican. I have conservative leanings myself, but to lie about it is very disheartening. To make the claim that the city finance department is engaged in Enron-like accounting and the Water department meter claims proves that Norwood has honesty issues. Her vote against the furlough tax increases also speak volumes as to her nature to pander. I’m not for senseless tax hikes either, but I like leaders to lead and propose alternatives. This is why I’m supporting Ceasar Mitchell for Council President. He didn’t just vote against the tax hike in 2008, he also found additional monies in other places to reopen the West End fire stattion.

I’m sorry folks, but Norwood just doesn’t cut it and you will all be surprised at how many white, black, gay and straight people feel the same. Kasim Reed will win and I hope everyone will come together and not try to obstruct our city’s progress.

Oh yeah, your claims against Reed using the Mayoral office as a stepping stone totally holds up to Mary Norwood’s M.O. For the past three years. She’s been using hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to “communicate” with constituents, by trinkets and food. This behavior is a shining example of a stone-stepper. I’m not claiming that Reed is perfect, but he’s much more poised to lead the city out of this morass. He’s done much more than sit on the sidelines and criticize the current administration and not offer solutions and resolve.

All,

Remember to vote Kasim Reed for Mayor on Dec. 1.

Hey OIracle……..TADS were set up for blighted and underserved areas Do you homework. Look at cousins Terminus in buckhead and St. Regis in Buckhead….hardley blighted, and fall under TAD. Yes, I now Mary supports TADS for intended blighted areas to encourage development. She isn’t the one slipping legislation through at the 12th hour at the captitol to help out some developers. Reed is.

Reed doesn’t pay his taxes, is caught and says he is minority partner in his business $44K+ in arrears when he is the finance manager of record? Come on Oracle. isn’t he part of our problem with revenue collections? We wouldn’t need a tax hike if he and so many others would pay their taxes! AND he can well afford to pay them, that is what is so egregious about it all. HE can afford it and just doesn’t!!! Bill Campbell didn’t pay his taxes either……. similar ego maybe? The laws don’t apply to him? This guy is an outright liar and doesn’t think he needs to pay his fair sharae while the rest of have to. Come on Oracle. It is all there. He is our financial problem.

I have followed Felicia Moore and Howard Shook. Felicia has asked for years for the same documentation that Mary Norwood has asked for. She doesn’t receive it either. Howard Shook’s up Shirley’s skirt. He is quoted in response to the financial mess as saying, “I don’t believe it” and he is Chair of the Finance committee for the past 4-6 years? He admitted he is clueless!! Why would he ask for information or complain when he doesn’t know what is going on? Hejust warms up a seat down there to have an income as he has never had a job since he has been in Atlanta for 20+ years. What does that say about getting information on finances. Keep’em in the dark and the money can bemoved.

Not a neighborhood in this city hasn’t called Mary Norwood to help them by being a voice on an issue. She is a city wide council person. It is the individual council members who should be handling their own districts but they don’t. Unfortunately, while council should be as legislators, they end up being the dept that gets the trash picked up, the sidewlaks fixed, etc. Because Mary knows the issues, she will make a better Atlanta Mayor. Let Reed go to Washington where he wants to be….wonder where he will move to next to run for office? After John Lewis’s seat? Can he beat Saxby? Come on Oracle, Mary will be our next Mayor and we will be all the better for it. She will stand up to the business as usual politic down there and clean house.

Oracle, you want to keep on paying your unfair share, then Reed is your man. I don’t. I and thousands of others are sick of it. We don’t need tax increases for reduced services. We need financial oversight, transparency and someone who isn’t connected to the last 30+ years of mismanagement. .Reed has favors to pay, ownership. Mary isn’t owned by anyone, she is a city candidate of the citizens. VOTE MARY ON TUESDAY!!! She will win this race as I have faith in the citizens all over this city who are supporting her. We are all tired of the business as usual politics down at 55 Trinity Avenue and Hartsfield-Jackson.

I really don’t think the Buckhead projects you’re talking about are TADs but I’m not sure, so I won’t refute until I can research them myself. Really, the onus is on you to prove that they are because I’ve checked ADA’s website and there are only Downtown TADs (East and West), The Stadium TAD, Campellton Rd., Beltline and Perry/Bolton. I hope your comments aren’t another attempt to misinform people, because a lot of that happens on these threads. As for Reed’s tax issues, there have been numerous news sources to look into this matter and they said that everything checks out and I’m going to take their word of yours and Norwood’s. I don’t believe the news reason to be in the tank for Reed, especially credible sources.

Felicia Moore and Mary Norwood are provided the same information that you and I can get with an open records request and once they get it, they’ve found that the money’s accounted for and thoughtful leaders go back to finding solutions. Ms. Norwood, on the other hand, seems to get a kick out of grandstanding and pointing fingers at everyone but herself. I honsestly despise leaders like that.

Please provide factual data that supports your claims about the TADs in Buckhead.

I have not met my match, as this no competition to me. I am still waiting on Sophie to prove that the Buckhead projects she mentioned are TADs. I have checked ADA’s website and there is no mention of the two Buckhead developments, I’m not even sure how you are connecting the two.

Again, Norwood supporters are very gung-ho about this woman who has done nothing in her current post. I’m sorry, I’m just not buying the “she’ll be a great mayor line because she talks to the people”. I want a mayor that can do more than talk to the people. I want a strong chief executive who has a track record of leadership and tough decision making. Norwood hasn’t demonstrated any of this and you all know it. You just want this woman to be mayor because she’s white and that’s prejudiced and its become more transparent since her latest ad injects race when no one else has brought it up. Reed has lots of white supporters in my East Lake neighborhood and they don’t trust Mary Norwood. One of them has said that she never give eye contact when she speaks to people. I don’t like innuendo and rumor, but it is what it is. Mary Norwood is selling wolf tickets and so are many of her supporters. Thing is, not many are buying this crap.

She has no record and nothing to back up all the claims she makes about what she’d do as mayor.

Some white people in this town are hilarious. You get on these threads and play victim. I’m sick of it. YOU ARE NOT A VICTIM! I’m very disheartened to see that Mary has decided to use race in this campaign. I have already voted for her but as an African American, it is very misleading for Mary to suggest that Kasim Reed has tried to divide the city racially. I don’t watch the news everyday or read the newspapers all the time, but I haven’t seen anywhere where Kasim Reed mentioned race during this election.

The only distinction of conversation has been about Mary’s party affiliation. I don’t care if she’s a Republican or Democrat becase this race is non-partisan, but for her to try and say Reed is making this election about race is totally misleading. My husband told me not to buy into Norwood’s story and I should’ve listened.

This lady is a liar and I don’t appreciate all the dishonesty over the past few weeks. All this stuff seems silly when Atlanta has so many other issues. I didn’t vote against Reed because of Shirley Franklin or because he’s black, but because I believed in Mary. She is making me second guess my choice now, though.

It’s a shame the way some of you people purposelly wallow in ignorance. I already knew from my undergrad days that Atlanta’s political scene isn’t categorized as a machine, but I just did a quick google search to prove my point. As I already knew, Atlanta was mentioned by any credible (academic sources) as a machine. In fact, the only place in Georgia to mentioned as a place where a political machine thrived is Augusta. The Cracker Party was our state’s second largest city’s machine of choice for many years. Don’t believe me? Google it. Makes me wonder if Mary Norwood knows anything about the Cracker Party.

American political establishments are the Tammany Halls in New York, The Daley Machine in Chicago and a few other smaller, lesser known machines in the Midwest.

I hope she does a good job explaining tonight, because I’ll be watching.

You should research Political Machines a little bit and it may help you understand them a little better. A politcal machine consists of so many more layers than what we have here in Atlanta. I am not trying to skirt the issues here. Atlanta definitely has a political establishment, but to suggest that it is a machine is naïve. Atlanta is nowhere near as organized or as corrupt as the actual political machines that have existed in this country. If there was a machine in this city, Mary Norwood wouldn’t have ever gotten this far.
