Woof, beep! Replace Uga with a bulldog robot, says PETA

While it sounds like something Georgia Tech might suggest, Tim Bryant with WGAU (1340AM) in Athens just posted this:

People for Ethical Treatment of Animals has a suggestion for the University of Georgia, which is looking for a replacement for Uga VII, the Georgia Bulldog mascot who died last Thursday in Savannah:

PETA says the University should use what it calls an “animatronic dog,” or use a person in a costume. PETA has sent its suggestion via e-mail to University of Georgia Athletic Director Damon Evans. The PETA e-mail follows…

In the wake of the untimely death of the University of Georgia’s (UGA) bulldog mascot, Uga VII, PETA has asked the school’s athletic director, Damon M. Evans, to replace the mascot with an animatronic dog–or to rely solely on a costumed mascot–instead of using another real bulldog. Bulldogs are prone to breathing difficulties, hip dysplasia, heart disorders, and other congenital ailments, and acquiring a dog from a breeder perpetuates the animal overpopulation crisis while causing another dog waiting in an animal shelter to be condemned to death.

Dear God, I think I might agree with PETA on something- I went to UGA and love the Ugas, but over the last few years, they’ve become too big because of inbreeding. If the Seiler’s want to keep the tradition alive and not have to worry about Uga dying every two years, take the pure white male and mate it with a female not related. So what if Uga XII has commoner blood in it? :)
But then I see the robotic dog idea and the agreeing stopped. Normalcy returns.

It is disturbing that an university with a veterinary school would allow and support an unhealthy breeding operation. They need to tell Sonny and family, thanks for the memories but it is time to move on. I also think the university should do something to further research into the genetic diseases that plague man and animal alike.

I’m not about to suggest a person stop breeding because their family has a history of heart attacks. And as far as lifestyle, Uga is checked at the vet clinic every time he comes to Athens. He is well looked after. Know what you’re talking about.

R is onto something. it’s not the use of a live mascot, but the branchless family tree (insert Alabama joke) that is behind PETA’s suggestion. I share no common ground with PETA, but the argument has merit. Enough with the “bloodline” nonsense. find a healthy LIVE bulldog in a shelter or via a rescue organization. seems to me, this is one example where a call for diversity or political correctness is just common sense. as a life-long dog owner/lover, I would say something is wrong when an animal dies before his fifth birthday, regardless of the quality of life he enjoyed.

Why not admit, that even though you know the way the bulldogs are bred is going to lead to health problems, that’s nowhere near as important as the joy we get from them being mascots and be done with it?

If I was a real live Bulldog I would be offended by the prospect of being replaced by a fake Bulldog or robotic one. Also, the prospect of a human telling an animal what you can or cannot be. It seems to me as if they would be saying to me we don’t think your healthy enough to live an active life therefore we would rather you die somewhere else. Kind of an oxymoron to me. In addition, I don’t see PETA actively adopting or setting up shelters to save the animals that are constantly put to sleep every day. Seems like they should spend more time assigning individual PETA members to stake out the local death chambers for these animals rather than stirring up politcal controversy all of the time.

See, Clemson has a fanbase that consists mostly of alumni. Alumni that make lots of money and have sex with beautiful women. UGA has a fanbase comprised of mostly bandwagon fans that barely hold a high school degree. Unfortunately for you it comes with the territory of having a very successful football team, but nontheless don’t be the pot and then call the kettle black.
