House Speaker Glenn Richardson attempts suicide

This was just posted by my AJC colleague Aaron Gould Sheinin:

Georgia House Speaker Glenn Richardson (R-Hiram) suffers from depression and recently tried to take his own life.

Richardson, in a statement to the media, said he has been suffering from depression for the past two-and-a-half years since separating and subsequently divorcing his wife.

We’ve been told that Richardson told a group of Republican state lawmakers this afternoon. Bert Brantley, spokesman for Sonny Perdue, said the governor will not cut short his overseas trip.

May God continue to watch over you, Mr. Speaker.

Politics aside, we should all lift Richardson up in prayer that he would be able to overcome his depression.

I appreciate such courage on the part of Glenn Richardson. To admit that you attempted suicide when you are in the public eye is a real show of courage. I hope maybe Glenn’s “admission” will help someone or some people to see that they are not alone in their depression—that even people in high places suffer from this dread “disease”, but that help is available.

My husband took his own life on June 12, 2009. Because of this, I am most appreciative that Glenn chose to go public.

I never know whether to believe Richardson. This could be a scheme to gain sympathy.

I think everyone should stop, he has kids, kids who are greatly affected by everyones words. The kids are breaking and your hurtful comments hurt them even more. Please think about what you are saying! I am friends of both of them!

Too bad folks were not hands off with Sarah Palin because of her kids.

While I sympathize with them Glen’s kids are affected far more by his choices and unfortunate actions than a blogger’s words ever could.

And the reason that comments are open on this article is, ummm, WHY?

I’m sorry that this happened to Glenn Richardson or to anyone. But the Bible speaks of pride coming before destruction. If he had been thinking with the right part of his anatomy he’d probably still be married.

It is so easy for us to judge anyone in this circumstance.

The first thing is compassion…and who cares if it is ‘random’ compassion.

My deepest sympathies to anyone who has suffered depression. I did and have. It is hell on earth.

Only the support of very close family and friends can make a difference. Life is precious but sometimes we lose sight of that.

My family sends unconditional concern. No agenda or strings attached.

Somehow Glenn Richardson is not so convincing. Although he is undoubtedly suffering from psychological problems and should obviously seek medical help, It’s not clear why we should support someone who may compromise the public interest by committing suicide. I’m very sorry that he’s ill, but I would prefer a sane, committed state representative.

I wanted to let you know that you are not alone in your suffering. I too have been overwhelmed with depression, gloom, and also thoughts of suicide since the loss of my mother two tears ago last month. With all the wrongs in the world today, it seems that these matters of losing those close to us (whether in death or affairs of the heart), are the ones that hurt the most and last the longest.

The sympathy and understanding displayed by the libs here is stunning. If the guy was a Kennedy, you libs would be lining up to fund a hospital studying suicide in the the Kennedy’s name. Pathetic. God bless Richardson and his family. He is a father, after all.

My husband and two other friends of Glenn Richardson was killed in a plane crash almost 2 years ago. These men had nothing to do with what is going on today with Glenn Richardson. They were all friends from the same county. All men of integrity that helped the less fortunate, all with generous hearts. Hiram 33, I feel sorry for you! I will say a prayer for you tonight!

Of course he’s going to be checking the comments every hour today. Glen Richardson, I hope you can find some kind of peace. We’ve all strayed from the path at one point or another. Some go further astray than others. My advice to you is to identify your values and live by them. The pain you feel comes from living a life that is at odds with your principles. I’m sure that you love your family. Yet you’ve betrayed them. I suggest also that you work on finding humility. You are not a great man. Being elected to the Georgia legislature is not an accomplishment. The Georgia legislature is an expensive laugh. You don’t need a $50,000 desk. Get rid of it. People chuckle behind your back when they see you. I know. Accomplish something great. Find some way to create goodness. Be a man.

Mr. Richardson is a great leader and full of courage. At least he is man enough to stand in the spotlight and say I have a serious issue I’m dealing with and we all need to be aware that depression is real, painful and not a judgment on character. If it was a heart attack, no one would be throwing stones. At least he is not running from his issues but facing them head on like a man; much more than other political leaders we see. He’s a man just like you and me with real faults and real feelings. I guess it’s easier to magnify other people’s struggles so as to require less introspect on your own. Some country we’ve become when we shoot our own wounded.

Yeah, some courage. He waited until the 911 tape was about to be released before saying anything. And when he did make an announcement, he did it on Friday evening in order to have the news gain as little attention as possible. It’s standard operating procedure to announce anything you want buried on Friday afternoon. That’s really some courage there.

This man ran around on his wife and 4 children and most of the posters think he is the victim. My husband had better not try that trick.

One of his sons is one of my best friends and this is as for real as you can imagine. People need to stop thinking so much about politics and realize politicians have families. I have been staying intouch with the Richardsons and he is doing much better. Have a little respect for yourself hiram 93.

HIRAM 93,
I sincerely hope that You, your family or friends never go down in a plane crash! This is an awful tragic thing to happen to anyone and I would not wish it on my worst enemy. I do not understand why you would bring up such an awful thing to open wounds that will never completely heal. This has nothing to do with Mr Richardsons medical problems. What kind of monster are you? I pray God have mercy on your soul.

A Politician cheats on his wife & family, shacks up with a lobbyist, carries the water for lobbyist, then tries to kill himself and that makes him a HERO. I thought he was a Republican not a Democrat.

Well, regardless of your political persuasion (and I clearly don’t support Mr. Richardson), you have to hope he works through this. Now, as for his political ambitions, I hope he is forced to give up his post and quietly fade into the Georgia woodwork.

I hope he gets the help he needs, and uses the time to consider his votes on mental health care issues. Perhaps things will be clearer to him. He needs time out of the limelight and fishbowl, to take care of himself with the kind of mental health care available to the “common man.”

It would be beneficial to all of us if our elected leaders would just resign when faced with a crisis of conscience over their behavior in office and the conflict they feel for violating their oaths of office. Suicide is certainly not the answer.

Knowing for years he was this sick, the disrespectful egomaniac never had the respect to step down. Nor did his family report it. AHHHHHHH!!!! His FAILED suicide selfishly added more problems on those he was to serve. Selfish people never succeed at suicide. Never. He and his family are selfish people. And a FAILED suicide he will now want to get paid to speak on, write a book, make the rounds again with the book. America is great. All want to move here and do this crap.

2 and a half years? He’s been a nutcase as far back as 2003! No one should pitty that man for any reason. I personally hope this means the end of politics for him. If he still wants to run for a higher office so bet it, we’ll just air more of his dirty laundry at such time.

I am 16 years old, and am good friends with his son, he is going through a rough time, but dont we all? Instead of putting him down, maybe we should be praying that God will help him thorugh the things going on in his life. I think that everyone saying he is a scumbag should think twice about that, because from my view, you are the scumbag for saying that.
