Lisa Borders and Kasim Reed about to sit down for a talk

We’re told that ousted Atlanta mayoral candidate Lisa Borders is about to sit down with former state senator Kasim Reed, who finished in second place Tuesday behind Councilwoman Mary Norwood.

You can presume they’re talking about an endorsement. Borders has scheduled a photo op for 4:30 p.m. at 100 Terminus in Buckhead, with hints that she’ll also have a few words to say.

Reed was on V103 this morning, buttering up Borders during a discussion about improving the city’s economy:

“My colleague Lisa Borders had a wonderful idea of focusing on micro-lending, which I thought was an excellent idea that she actually developed….

“She talked about making small loans – certainly to women-owned businesses, and small businesses, to really get them [on] their feet. They don’t need $100,000 to start a business. They may need $10,000 and $15,000 or $20,000 to start that small business.

“That’s an initiative that she actually developed, that I would like to continue to champion. Because during the campaign I thought it was an excellent idea.”

Allow me to remind you of this paragraph from a Monday post:

One unspoken consequence of the state Democratic party’s entry into the Atlanta mayoral race: It may have cost front-runner Mary Norwood any chance she had of striking an alliance with candidates left out of a run-off – if there is one.

Based on their statements in Sunday’s AJC/WSB debate, in which they accused Norwood of misleading voters on her party identification, it seems unlikely that Kasim Reed, Lisa Borders or Jesse Spikes would endorse Norwood.

Actually, I think they’re going to discuss that memo written by the two Clark Atlanta professors.
So Reed has the backing of P.Diddy and Ludacris. I’m thinking his team should just invite Kayne to speak at a fundraising event. Maybe he’ll say, “Mary Norwood hates black people,” and lock in the election.

It does not matter how many endorsements Kasim Reed gets if Atlanta residents repeat what they did on November 3,(not bothering to vote) Norwood will win anyway.

Sad but true…Amazing, the candidate endorsed by Ludacris and TI will be mayor of Atlanta. I will say though this election proves it’s a matter of time before the Jackson political corrupt machine will end. Atlanta’s demographics are shifting (white flight ended)

Isn’t it funny how no black celeb or political person is backing up Norwood? The thugs out there say they don’t vote based just on skin color. YEA RIGHT. The thugs in this city should be smart and vote for Norwood so she can clean up the mess that all of the black mayors made. Black leadership obviously does not work!

Only had 78k or so vote in general election, just a question of how many show up in runoff (half that, two-thirds, pick a #). Don’t know how important an endorsement is, how likely is it that Ms. Borders’ voters will vote again?

well,
What’s shocking is that Norwood got 46% of the vote in the primary!!!

She clearly was the least competent, least intelligent and least prepared of any of the remaining 4 candidates.

The only reason she got so many votes is because she is white.

I like Lisa Borders. If she backs Norwood, I would be surprised. She has presided over do-nothing-in-8-years-at-city-hall Norwood and knows first hand what would happen if she got control over the city.

It isn’t a black vs white thing. It is who has the strength and leadership to fix the problems.

She knows Norwood personally and I doubt she will do anything for Norwood.

WOW!!! Did any of you people read the breakdown of traditional black and white precients that was given yesterday in this same section, Political Insider?

In majority black precients, Mary Norwood was able to get support of 15 – 25% of those that voted on Tuesday.
In majority white precients, Kasim Reed was able to get support of 3 – 7% of those that voted on Tuesday.
And before you say that the rest of the white voters were split between the rest of the black canidates, Mary Norwood was getting over 90% of the vote in those precients.
Now I am not going to say that a white voter in Atlanta will not support a black canidate over a white one but the numbers are the numbers.

It’s saddening how often commenters try to turn this election into an issue on race. Mary Norwood had the entire playing field to herself, as far as the northside white vote goes. If she was as great a candidate as y’all want to make everyone believe she would’ve closed the deal on Tuesday. There were three main black candidates that split the vote and Mary garnered 75% of the white vote (which by the way reflects racial bias) and she still was forced into a run-off.

Your stupid, psuedo-victim comments are only angering black voters because many don’t believe Ms. Norwood is a great candidate and many believe her to be a republican. For the record, Ludacris has never been convicted of any crime, is a great father and has a stellar philanthropic record. TI is currently paying his debt to society for his wrongs and has not endorsed Kasim Reed.

How about mentioning the fact that Pat Gardner, Kathy Ashe, Nan Orrock and Karla Drenner are all supporting Kasim Reed. And guess what? Wait for it…they’re all WHITE, FEMALE STATE LEGISLATORS.

This is election is not centered on race. As a matter of fact, why don’t all you loons go write on the birther comment page. Nathan Deal is writing a letter to President Obama for him to release his birth certificate. MARY NORWOOD IS A SHAME AND THESE COMMENTERS SHOULD GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF HOW SHE’D GOVERN AS MAYOR.

Just a word to the wise–the top 10 poorest cities in the United States have one thing in common. They have not elected a Republican mayor for anywhere from 25 to 50 years. I guess Democrats know how to give it away and people love that, but Republicans know how to make it, and expect something from others–and that is not what people want in this country. Of course, the goose will die someday and then we will all starve together. So fight it out on race, but you should be fighting it out on economics.

The reason Norwood received the most votes is not because she’s white, it’s because she’ll be less corrupt.

This election mirrors the presidential election. You have a person with little experience gathering people of all races to” fight the man” because the public’s tired of having no representation in government. They work for us, not us for them.

@Chris-Its mighty funny how you point fingers at another race when all the white race (in America) have done in the last 500 years is kill individuals, families, cultures, heritages and minds. Removed a entire society (Africans) from it’s home, rape and beat their woman, exploit their men, kill their babies and enslave them for generations. Drove indigenous people (American Indians) from their lands, lie (when the concept didn’t even exist to them) cheat and steel from them and all but extenquished their rich culture from the earth, ALL IN THE NAME OF GOD AND PROSPERITY.

So?,

Mary Norwood has done a good job reaching out to all communities in the city. That is why she got approximately 20% of the black vote. However, why did she get 85% of the white vote?…not because she is the best candidate, but because she is white.

Mary is a decent public servant at the level of a city counsel person. She is not mayoral. She is not smart enough. She does not have sufficient vision. She has poor verbal skills. She does not instill any sense of confidence in her.

She “pales” in comparison to any 1 of the final 4 candidates.

Her inadequacy is shockingly apparent. Yet race makes it impossible for some to accept it.

It is scary that the least qualified candidate came in 1st.

Shame on you for not being realistic about Mary of the glaring factor of race in this election.

In the 1980s, however, there were 10 such incidents of mass murder. The 1990s had 17; and, since the new millennium began, there have been 25 such mass murders.

Six of them occurred last year. And 2009 has already topped that with eight such killings.

This are just mass murders, I haven’t looked up all school shootings but I just saw a list of about 30 cases for this year alone. Everyday, ordinary citizens working together for a common cause (to make Atlanta better) can do a lot more than our elected officials. And that’s a FACT! So, if you want to see Atlanta get back to the prosperous city it once was then your responsibility is to #1 VOTE, #2 Stop whining and complaining, #3 Do something to make a change like helping to clean up parks, volunteering a schools, write letters to your elected officials and hold them responsible, report crime when you see it, and clean up your yard, and most of all, respect yourself and your neighbors.

So?,
It sounds like you have a reason for voting for Mary Norwood other than the fact that she is white.

I respect your opinion regarding that.

I stand by what I contend are the obvious and glaring deficits in her as a mayoral candidate and the scary way that white people try to ignore them.

And, yes, Mr. Reed, is a tremendously more accomplished communicator than Mary, especially when called upon to think on his feet.

I am conservative and a Republican…but more importantly, I am honest about what is going on.

William: You have made the only single intelligent contribution to this blog.

Crazy Larry – I am with you. Obama did not have the experience, according to some, yet we voted him in because he has the lesser baggage and we needed a change.

I do not know Mary Norwood but I have been living in Atlanta the last 5 years and at one time I thought she was the Mayor. Her name was the only name people called and could have counted on for answers. I am a Democratic who voted Republican for Gov because I thought that Gov. Perdue was and still is doing a good job. I did not vote along party line, I looked at the individual and what had had achieved. The same goes for Norwood, I voted for her and will vote for her again. She is the change Atlanta needs.

I too think it is going to be an uphill climb for Norwood but at the same time, its not impossible. I am afraid a mayor Reed would simply bring more of the same we’ve been putting up with in city hall for quite a few years now. I had an African-American friend tell me today he is finished with voting for blacks at any level mostly because of promises they make and then tend to forget as soon as they are inaugurated. While I don’t feel quite that strongly about it, I’m sure some would say that for other racial groups as well. You might be very surprised to hear that a lot of African-Americans are tired of the politics as usual. Unfortunately, I think Reed will bring more of the same. Norwood has a plan and has a goal to make needed changes in city hall. I think we all should give her a chance come run-off day.

@Willie, my comment was specifically a response to what was said by Chris-black people not liking/trusting white people. I in no way look for any pity. I assume that’s the reason why all of the groups you’ve mentioned have had tention throughout history. Whats the difference here.

By the way, I don’t wait to be told anything-The Republican Party of 1865 is NOT the Reuplican Party of today. Maybe you should get someone to tell you how the republican party switched out in the 1960s.

You’re a clown! I guess whtie leadership doesn’t work either, because the State of Georgia has high unemployment, low test scores, furloughed state workers and increased taxes.

Also, here is a little info on America’s new drug problem.

Super Soul Leaders, Unite. The white cannot be allowed to win. ATL is backasswards and is well on the way to being the “Detroit” of the south. You folks deserve the leadership you elect.

As a white guy who voted for Lisa Borders, I can tell you that race didn’t play a part in my vote on Nov. 3rd. Borders has intelligence and a direct honesty that Reed and Norwood don’t seem to possess. Unfortunately, she also seemed to possess an ineffective mayoral campaign… so now we’re stuck between a self-proclaimed outsider (Reed) with insider connections, and a self-styled reformer (Norwood) who seems way out of her depth.

So, race won’t play a part for my vote in a runoff, either. At this point, I’ll vote for whoever I think will build the best, most effective governing office. To have any clue of that, I’ll watch very closely over the next few weeks who the candidates pick up in endorsements—including that of Lisa Borders.

well…so you are saying all republicans (majority white) voted for norwood because they didn’t want another black mayor; and you are hating why????

john doe…stay anonymous…it’s obvious that you don’t want anyone to know who you are…i don’t blame you….since when does your occupation take away your vote? rappers have the same rights as you…they have a vote that they can cast for any candidate they want.

who do you think was the republican candidate in this race….right…the uncandidate…mary norwood!

@chris white power…the number of whites in jail has nothing to do with race, it has to do with money…and the ability to afford a lawyer in a system that isn’t already against them just because of the color of their skin…only in america can you do what you do…the country built on lies, cheating and deceit…and you get mad when someone is trying to correct what white politicians have corroded…

no i’m not prejudice, i’m just tired of you being prejudice…

Some of you people scare me to dealth. When are you going to wake up. Our country and cities are in terrible shape and all you can talk about is what color they are and to what party they belong. I am afraid we will not wake up in time and vote for a person with a plan that we can support. Washington and Atlanta are full of polititions that don’t have a clue and don’t really care what is best for the majority of us.

some of you love to holler about black people playing the race card but some of you are mad bc you are not in control. it’s ok for the majority of cities to be white controlled but it’s a different story when blacks are in control. and if atlanta was that damn bad then why does our population continue to grow exponentially? black mayors have made atlanta the attractive city it is today. every city has issues, especially in this economy. you can keep making your “ghetto” and “thug” references but one, whites have prospered off black music. and two, atlanta has some of the brightest, smartest and most progressive blacks in the country who are economically and politically astute. you are simply threatened and your horns are showing.

As an African-American who was born in the West End section of Atlanta, Georgia I ask that all African-Americans who live in the City of Atlanta vote on December 1st, 2009 in the City of Atlanta Mayoral Run-off Election. My grandpaprents and parents taught us to vote. On my grandparents’ living room wall is a large painting of President Abraham Lincoln (the sixteenth president of these United States of Americka) issuing the Emanicipation Proclamation. We have Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas dinner with that picture an important part of our family gathering. I can remember watching my first Football Game, the Cotton Bowl Game between the University of Nebrasha Cornhuskers and the University of Arkansas Razorbacks in front of that painting. It is the most importantthing in our family. It is even more important than our homes themselves. There is nothing more important to an African-American than freedom. It is worth killing for and worth dying for!!!!!
For African-Americans who did not vote on Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009 in your jurisdictions you need to be exterminated. Live free or Die!!!!!
