Mary Norwood increases her lead in ATL race for mayor
We started this week by telling you of a private poll that showed Councilwoman Mary Norwood doing better than many people thought – and within reach of winning the race for mayor of Atlanta without a runoff.
And we end the week with a WSB-TV/InsiderAdvantage poll that says nearly the same thing: Norwood, 39 percent; Lisa Borders, 24 percent; and Kasim Reed, 17 percent. The undecided vote stands at 13 percent.
Margin of error is plus-or-minus 3 percentage points; 734 likely voters participated in the robo-call survey.
Norwood shows a statistically significant, 6-point increase in her lead over a WSB/InsiderAdvantage poll conducted two weeks ago – which can be attributed to a new, effective presence on TV via two 30-second spots.
Like that private poll, the newest IA poll shows Norwood winning a plurality of the African-American vote. For those with a subscription, IA CEO Matt Towery has posted his crosstabs here.
Many will still quibble with the Nov. 3 electorate that Towery has modeled, which supposes that young voters between 18 and 29 will make up 30 percent of the electorate. But this is what horse races are all about.
One note: We received a report today from political veteran who became part of the IA survey. He said the voice on the robo-call was Towery himself – and that the delivery was crisp and clean.

The good news is that the undecideds are down from 24% to 13%.
The bad news is that it looks like they’ve decided towards that witch Norwood.
I guess people are easily swayed. After all, Mary Mary Quite Quite Scary did have two commercials come out in the weeks between the last poll and this poll. One was quirky and dumb. The other was serious and brooding. The dichotomy stuck in people’s minds, hence the increase. But have they heard her in debates? She rambles on like a blithering ninny. Her incompetence and ignorance of the things she should know in her capacity as Councilwoman (like the city budget) is staggering. She has gotten zero press endorsements (that fishwrapper APN doesn’t count). She panders shamelessly to Blacks south of I-20. And yet, people think she should be our next mayor.

I think voters are smart enough to realize that municipal issues like public safety and code enforcement are not very partisan. Besides, Lisa Borders’ plan to “monetize” our city’s assets is the most Republican idea I’ve heard in this race. What could be more Republican than telling poor Black kids that they have to pay an admission fee to enjoy their neighborhood park?

She’s run a better campaign and raised more money from a board cross section of the citizens of Atlanta, while her opponents raise money from special interest developers and bond lawyers.
Face, the collective wisdom of Atlanta has rejected business as usual at City Hall and supports a proven public servant that has spoken truth to power at City Hall for the last 8 years.

Truth be told, Mary is just running a better campaign. She’s no rocket scientist, but the other two have shown they know how to shoot themselves in the proverbial a$$. It’s occurs to me that Reed has run two ads and bought a lot of air time (everytime you turn around, it comes on again) and is still stuck well below 20 points. I don’t know what to say about Borders. This should have been a cakewalk. There is a grand possibility that there will be no run-off– whereas before it was a foregone conclusion.

I wonder what the vote split between younger and older voters was in the Presidential primary and general election last year? Or the last contested mayor’s race in 2001? It is hard to imagine it was split evenly among the age groups since older voters tend to vote more often than younger ones. On the other hand, the Towery poll could be confirmation of the poll Galloway reported on Monday in which case Norwood could win without a run off. The good news is the city would save money by avoiding the cost of a runoff election assuming other races don’t require the run off. If Norwood voted for Bush 1 and 2, was a delegate to the state Republican convention (for whatever reason), has been a member along with her husband of exclusive clubs(meaning African Americans, women and Jewish people were excluded from membership by virtue of their ethnicity, race or religion)and she doesn’t answer direct questions about her affiliations, then there is a serious problem. There is nothing elitist about wanting to have Norwood explain herself and describe her affiliations. If she is elected, Atlanta will have elected her mayor without having the benefit of her full disclosure of her agenda and philosphy. Norwood’s running against City Hall and Franklin rather than presenting an agenda for the city. She may win but Atlanta would lose.

Actually, Borders and Reed has far more support from the monied Republican elite than Norwood. Mary has been a pragmatic, non-partisan problem solver for her city-wide consituancy for 8 years.
Hell, Borders’ campaign chairman is a right-wing Republican. All her money is coming from developers and business interests. Same with Reed.
The only time Borders and Reed want to come out of their corporate board rooms and talk the the voters is at election time. It ain’t gonna work.

Many of these folks are more concerned with maintaining their power, taking money for favors and bickering than solving the many problems of the city.

This logic should be applied to the state of Georgia. The good ol’ boy system is as strong as ever. The DOT is a disaster. Ethics non-existent. Constant infighting.
Heck Republicans were even given an excellent Black candidate who lost to Perdue in the primary 7 years ago. Anyone that can breathe would be a better leader than Perdue. Republicans in this state had a chance to elect a real Republican in that race but instead chose Perdue, the brand new Republican. Heck, Perdue was so new at being a Republican he didn’t know that he wasn’t supposed to give talks to gay business groups, which he did during his first campaign. He wouldn’t be seen near a gay person during his second campaign.

Reading these remarks makes me so glad I moved from Atlanta 2 years ago. I now live in a great city with very little crime, great services, no hip-hop awards, no rap crap music coming from almost every car stereo. I left Atlanta with some hesitation, because I grew up there and it really is a beautiful city. I have to agree though, that it has become the Detroit of the south. It’s a shame how much it’s declined. Not sure why anyone, especially with kids, would want to live there. Every day I felt like my life was in jeopardy. If you’re not a rapper or a thug, there’s very little else going on there. Still enjoy reading the AJC though. Here’s hoping Mary Norwood can clean that city up.

So I just watched the Fox 5 Debate (I DVR’ed it) and wow…how Norwood maintains a lead in the polls is downright scary. She was really poor in the debate, particularly when Morse Diggs nailed her to the wall about her vote against the budget that ended city furloughs. I don’t know if those polled are watching these debates, but I’m beginning to think they’re not. I’ve been able to watch the last few either online or on TV, and in each one, Mary just stinks.

Everyone knows Norwood is an empty suit, they just don’t want to admit it. Reed’s your best bet all around. Granted, he isn’t the most charismatic guy, but he’s got the best plan to move Atl forward and the biggest reason to seperate himself from all the past mistakes.

Norwood ignored the city’s procurement policies to hire a political advisor, the same one she has working in her campaign. She accuses the city of Enron accounting and then apologizes because she has no evidence. Now on a campaign ad she claims the city has lost $100 million but she can’t identify the details. She’s lost and Atlanta will be lost with her as Mayor. Take your pick but don’t pretend Norwood has any experience to run the capital city of Georgia. I assume the folks on the blog talking about corrutpion in government are talking about the Governor’s Land deal or secret land votes in Gwinnett County. Come with the evidence or stop bashing Atlanta.

And of all the money raised IN SOUTH ATLANTA – Norwood has RAISED MORE THAN EVERY OTHER MAYORAL CANDIDATE COMBINED from south Atlanta.

The reason the majority of black voters WONT support Norwood has nothing to do with race. Black voters have been supporting white candidates for years across this city, state and country. Mary’s problem is and will be Mary, she is a weak candidate and doesnt have what it takes to lead this big city. If there was a smarter, less-pandering, more genuine WHITE candidate blacks would probably get on board and overwhelmingly support. Clark Howard was probably a shoe-in, dont know why he didnt run.
Stop trying to play the black vote down because some whites are going to support Mary just because she’s white and that’s just as bad because her arguments are weak and unconvincing. She’s way out of her league.

Also, she voted for Bush 41, Bush 43 and was a delegate to the Georgia Republican Convention in 1999. So tell me, who goes from staunch GOPer to voting for the most liberal U.S. Senator for president. What you are really seeing in this year’s race for Mayor is that the people who fund the city’s budget are tired of feeling as though they have no representation in City Hall. Norwood appeals to residential property taxpayers. Reed and Borders are picking up the vote of tax consumers and special interests.
Watch the poll traffic in the the following areas Buckhead, Midtown, VaHi, Morningside, Lake Claire, Ansley Park, Candler Park, Inman Park, Druid Hills. If these neighborhoods turn out, Norwood wins without a run-off. This is where the majority of the property tax revenue comes from. Simple as that.

It is a sad state of affairs when the top two contenders are current office holders in a city that is in financial upheaval, accused of bias and where millions go missing and no one noticed. This is why our government and our country is so bad. To continue to elect people in the position of Norwood and/or Boarders is a tragic statement on our government.

Money doesn’t buy smarts. Norwood has street smarts but little experience nor has she offered any evidence to prove her points. It may work in the election but won’t work in managing the city. She’s a through back to the times when empty promises and factless assaults worked. She says the city has lost money but can’t explain what she’s talking about or what the water audit documented. She runs against the incumbent mayor who isn’t running. It must be easier to run against a fathom candidate than those in the race. Hartsfield had vision of an airport that would fuel the city’s economy. Allen tackled civil rights. Jackson opened the doors of government to community input. Massell championed transit. Young sold the world on Atlanta’s relevance. Franklin is the sewer mayor. Norwood admits she doesn’t understand the city’s budget or how to impact public policy as a member of Council for 8 years. So she hired a political consultant with city funds to organize her grassroots network for mayor and she’s the frontrunner and likely next mayor. My, my how times have changed.

I dont know who you are, but you are a smart person that has obviously been paying attention for the past 40 years. Managing a city is more than showing up to neighborhood meetings, something Norwood’s been good at. But we need a mayor that can navigate Atlanta out of this current low-point and find our new niche.

Black or white Mayor who cares!! In the condition that Atlanta is in I believe none of the candidates are prepared to lead Atlanta. Atlanta does need change but Norwood is just as scary as Sarah Palin. Kasim is to young and can easily make early mistakes or be influenced. Borders is to passive and can easily be influenced. Norwoood is running to take advantage of an opportunity. Her heart is not into becoming the Mayor and it shows.
