Three state lawmakers on Thursday denounced what they called an “alliance” between Atlanta mayoral candidate Lisa Borders and Lynne Riley, the Republican commissioner for Fulton County who supports the re-creation of Milton County from Fulton’s northern portion.
State Sen. Vincent Fort, Rep. Kathy Ashe, and Rep. Rashad Taylor – all supporters of rival candidate Kasim Reed — called for Borders to explain herself. And they demanded she cancel a fund-raiser that Riley will host for Borders next week.
“What deals have been cut? What is it that Lisa Borders going to do for north Fulton?” Fort asked. “Have there been any backroom deals cut between Lisa Borders and Commissioner Riley on this issue on the division of Fulton County?”
Borders saw this coming. She anticipated the accusations by about an hour, with an e-mailed statement that she is inalterably opposed to the creation of a Milton County, which she said would jeopardize both MARTA and Grady Memorial Hospital.
While I am proud to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, there is only one answer to this question: No Milton County,” said Borders.
“I appreciate the fact that my Republican colleagues from Fulton County understand that I can agree with them on some issues and oppose them on others,” the Atlanta city council president said. “At a time when my opponents are making up reasons to be divisive, the next mayor of Atlanta must be focused on how to bring this region together, on water, transportation and a host of other issues. We cannot afford to stand apart. ”
Borders campaign spokeswoman Liz Flowers said that Borders and Riley became friends through joint service on the Atlanta-Fulton County Water Authority. The Tuesday fund-raiser hosted by Riley will not be canceled, Flowers said.
Efforts to reach Riley were unsuccessful.
Fort said the lawmakers raised the issue without coordination from the Reed campaign. “This is not a campaign event,” Fort said of the Thursday press conference.

Kasim Sucks! This is all crap. This is exactly the type of politics we can expect from a Reed administration. Making something out of nothing and getting other people to suggest lies and deceit is so like Kasim. If Vincent and all his cronies want to know the relationship between Borders and Riley, then the public should know the relationship between Kasim and all his developer friends and rappers and thugs that contribute to his campaign.

Sorry Mr. Fort, the logic just isn’t there. The assertion that receiving support from an individual automatically leads to having made “back room deals” with that person is absolutely absurd. This isn’t news, this is a publicity stunt.

It shows that you don’t have much to support when you spend so much of your time attacking the others.
Let’s hear how/why Borders would be the best thing for Atlanta instead of focusing on why the others shouldn’t be.

Why have some responded with personal attacks of Mr. Fort? I would think that Lisa’s “alliances” with the like of Lynne Riley are particularly relevant. As President of the Grady Health System Foundation AND City Council President, why has she chosen to ally herself (even for one fundraiser) with a sworn enemy of the City of Atlanta? How else would you explain an advocate for the creation of Milton County (see: http://www.miltoncountyrising.com/release050709.htm) — the result of which could be disastrous for both Grady Hospital and MARTA (both of which receive significant funding from Fulton County’s current tax base). The creation of Milton would decimate two major regional employers, the state’s top trauma center, the potential spine for a regional transit center, and voters are supposed to overlook Ms. Borders’s alliance with Ms. Riley??!
Nothing less than the future viability of Fulton County, MARTA and Grady rests on the the County’s ability to prevent the creation of Milton County and possibly the next mayor is having fundraisers with a Milton County advocate. This is more than a conflict of interest; it smacks of a politician who will accept money from anyone.
I’ve heard time and again that a vote for Kasim Reed is the reincarnation of Bill Campbell, but it seems to me that the person we should most keep our eye on is Ms. Borders, people. I’m no fan of any of the candidates, but this makes me sick to my stomach.

I’m Confused, Is not the premise of these three stooges based on purely racial lines. Lynn Riley is not supporting White Mary Norwood which speaks volumes as to where her head is and where theirs are. Lisa is a class act whom treats everyone with great respect and dignity and she will represent Atlanta well, pure and simple. She transends race and brings parties together. Morehouse Guy, you have to ask yourself why would someone vying to become the next Mayor of the city work against her own self-interests? Maybe her professional relationship with Riley can open her eyes to the detriment a new county would cause residents of Fulton Co. We claim we want our political representatives to work together to solve problems, then when they do we question their motives. Borders hasn’t come out in favor of Milton County, in fact she adamantly opposes it based on her statement. Maybe there is common ground in other areas that she can work with Riley on.

Ford, Ashe and Taylor , stop the grand standing for Reed. You are all Shirley Franklin lackies. Borders is not supporting a Milton County. Stay on the issues which is Atlanta. It appears you all represent the “status quo” here in Atlanta, WHICH IS NOT GOOD, by supporting Reed who is a Shirley Franklins “lackie.” That is why Young is supporting him. They are all connected. We do not want the same arrogant, rude politician running city hall as was Franklin. During some of the debates, Reed have shown his arrogance and rudeness. He is not a “people person”. He is in this election for himself and not the citizens of Atlanta. That is why most of the money he has raised for his campaign have come from people who do not even live in Atlanta. FORT, the question you shopuld ask Kasim is “whose are you going to owe” if elected, and how and for what cause?? It is surely not for the citizens of Atlanta, but for your cronies from out of town who hope to line their pockets off the backs of Atlanta citzens. Shirley has done this and so will Reed. They are of the same cloth. Therefore, FORT, ASHE, TAYLOR, stop your grand standing in order to hurt Borders bid to become mayor. We do not need your unprofessional, biased opinions. I WILL TRULY NOT VOTE FOR YOU IN YOUR NEXT ELECTION. Ms. Borders is a “PEOPLE PERSON” and “SMART” who is for the “CITIZENS OF ATLANTA. SHe has “HISTORY” here as an Atlanta citizen. She is not trying to use us a “chicken fodder” for “out of towners.” WE NEED LISA BORDERS AS OUR NEXT MAYOR OF ATLANTA!!!!!!!!!!

Graves Hall, I am assuming you’re a fellow Morehouse Man, so I’ll take it easy on you. Yes, we do want our elected officials to build governing coalitions. And as you well know, Ms. Riley is a Commissioner for Fulton County — of which five of the Commissioners are adamantly opposed to the creation of Milton County. Thus, Ms. Borders could effectively “work together” with everyone else on the Fulton County Commission and fully vindicate the interests of the City of Atlanta. She doesn’t need Ms. Riley to create the kind of effective governing relationship that must be had between the City and the County. Furthermore, does she need a fundraiser to build these kinds of relationships? If I were her, my response: “Thanks, Lynn but no thanks. I’ll need your help if I’m elected, but accepting this money will give my opponents and the media way too much to talk about.” In short, she didn’t need to take the money from her to cultivate the kinds of relationships that she would need to govern (especially seeing that she already has a working relationship with her).
It’s more than obvious to me that you need not agree with someone on every point to accept their support. But let’s be clear — Ms. Riley’s legislative record strongly suggests to me that she’s not the kind of friend I would want to have if I am running for Mayor of Atlanta. And she certainly need not raise any money for me. Again, thanks but no thanks, Lynn.
Imagine if Mary Norwood had a Riley-sponsored fundraiser. There would be OUTRAGE from Black Atlanta. Why? Because it would feed into the perception held by some (one I think is wholly inaccurate) that Ms. Norwood is a “Buckhead Betty” who could care less about Black Atlanta. The interest at stake here: whether Ms. Norwood genuinely has the interests of ALL Atlantans in mind if she were to become Mayor.
Similarly, if Sen. Reed had a fundraiser of which Bill Campbell was the head of the host committee, almost all of Atlanta (of every color) would be up in arms. Why? Because that would play into the, “Kasim is a yet another shady installment of the Jackson Machine.” Interest at stake here: whether Sen. Reed could be trusted to do what’s right by the City as opposed to a narrow group of Atlantans who have benefited disproportionately from previous Administrations.
No one finds issues with building coalitions, but it’s the conflicts of interest in the pursuit of campaign cash that worries me most. She’s all too aware of disastrous impacts Milton County would have on the City of Atlanta, so the optics ALONE should give you pause. The appearance of impropriety here is glaring. We can work together once I’m in office, but do I need you to raise money for me? No thanks.
The issue here: Can I trust Lisa Borders not to get into bed with people who may not have the interests of Atlanta in mind? This fundraiser raises a critical trust issue for me. Again, the OPTICS alone should give us all pause.

@ Lee: This is about Atlanta. Two city institutions that many of our citizens depend on (as Ms. Borders herself acknowledges) — MARTA and Grady — would be devastated if Ms. Riley had her way. If that’s not “about Atlanta”, I don’t know what is.

Also @ Graves Hall, you pose a wonderful question — why exactly would Ms. Borders work against her own “self interests?” Maybe because she has more of a self interest in winning this campaign, and she’ll need money to do it. And let’s be honest, Ms. Riley probably has friends who have money. Also, it may be the case the Ms. Border’s risk/benefit calculation was such that she would think the media would either ignore this or have it blow over, and she’d benefit with a nice fundraising event. If you saw her recent disclosures, she sees where his race is going and she knows she’ll have to get on television, radio and out in the streets — all of which will take money. So, her “self interests” were clearly about raising sufficient funds to run her campaign. As such, this decision makes perfect sense.
And precisely how would this, as you present it, “new” professional relationship “open [Ms. Borders'] eyes? Firstly, they already know one another (see Lisa’s comments). Secondly, you don’t need a “professional relationship” to know that creating Milton County would be devastating to the City of Atlanta and Fulton County. I hope you’re not a Fulton County taxpayer who wouldn’t live in the new Milton County talking like that because if Ms. Riley had her way, your tax bill would skyrocket. Our needs as a County wouldn’t change — MARTA and Grady would still need money whether Milton was created or not. Where do you think it would come from?
Lisa knows this, but she’s doing it anyway. Why? Because she has supporters and folks across the City who are eating out of her hand. She knows that she can get away with shameless pandering (remember the Buckhead, “I’ll roll back property taxes” with a subsequent “clarification”) and events like these because she’s got the business community backing her, women and the LGBT community behind her, enough black Atlantans and enough white Atlantans who are not fans of Mary but who distrust Kasim. And she’s raising Friends of Milton County money to do it.
I feel like I need an alarm clock to wake some folks up in this City.

I’m in that “undecided” category at the moment, but I’m leaning Kasim. Jesse Spikes is clearly out of his element. He thought a resume would be enough to get him elected, and it hasn’t.
As for Mary Norwood, I can appreciate her enthusiasm, but I question whether she has the candle power or the gravitas to be anyone’s mayor. Her platform is heavy on wishes (restoration of pay increments for police and fire, 2,000 officers, etc.) and low on specifics or practicality (e.g. how you’re going to pay for it seeing as she won’t raise taxes and voted against ending the furloughs). She’s been only moderately effective on the Council (never seemed gain the respect of her colleagues to where she’d been appointed as a Council chair among other indicia of legislative effectiveness). She’s had good ideas though like the Intown neighborhood tour to encourage intown living, but she strikes me as a neighborhood activist who is out of her league in the world of ideas and policymaking. She’s great for showing up at meetings and I think she genuinely cares about all Atlantans, but I think she’s better of as a citywide Councilperson. She does a decent job at that.
Both Lisa and Kasim strike me as having solid platforms, practical ideas and both have identified revenue streams to pay for their ideas. My bigger issue with Ms. Borders has been her lackluster tenure as City Council President. We had activist Presidents with Robb Pitts, Marvin Arrington and Cathy Woolard, but Ms. Borders has done very little to lead me to believe she’s the best for the job. Where has she shown any leadership? You need not vote to show some. We’ve seen it before in this City! Plus, and this really burned me, she picked one of the most incompetent members of the City Council to head Public Safety. Why on earth would you want Cleta Winslow leading anything? Bad judgment.
As for Kasim, I’ve heard concerns about him being the next Bill Campbell. Nothing about him leads to me to believe he’ll do anything rising to the level of corruption of Bill Cambell. Personally, he’s not the most charismatic or engaging guy in the world, but he’s shown that he understands the issues (been to my share of forums and debates and on all of the candidate websites), and he’s got the kind of relationships at the State Capitol that would bode well for the City of Atlanta. I’m less worried about the “Shirley crony” issue because, quite honestly, Kasim likely understands that people are going to expect a Shirley clone, and he’ll give you something very different. The guy’s politically savvy, so I wouldn’t expect that from him. Further, I think Senator Reed has more on the line — he’ll likely pursue higher office if he were to win so he knows he’ll have to run on what he does in the City of Atlanta. Thus, he has an incentive to do well. He’s not perfect, but I think he’s the best out there.
I used to be a big Lisa fan, but she’s disappointed me time and again. Then, I looked to Mary, and it only took one debate, and I was done. I’ve really kicked the tires on Kasim, and in all honesty, I think he’s the best man for the job. Some people will read my previous comments and scream: “He’s a Kasim supporter, you can’t believe anything he says!” I’m simply a discerning voter, and Ms. Borders trustworthiness is much more of an open question for me than it is for Mary or Kasim, and it goes much deeper than this Milton county issue.

@Color Blind,
Would it be okay for Mary Norwood to benefit from funds raised by John Oxendine? He wants to bust a highway right down the center of one the wealthiest and most vibrant neighborhoods in Atlanta.
I seriously doubt Norwood would get in bed with this character, just because of how it would look. There’s nothing wrong with building coalitions, but when interests don’t align people generally don’t share money. Barack Obama will not host a fundraiser for Olympia Snowe, even though her support of the Helathcare Reform bill will be critical.

@ Color Blind — please show me the provisions of which you speak. I doubt you’re correct, but if you are, I’d be more than willing to stand corrected. Further, the issue goes beyond MARTA and Grady. Those are just the two biggest issues. There are a host of other governmental entities (like the District Attorney’s Office, Atlanta Public Schools) that would be adversely affected by the creation of Milton County.
Listen, I’m not some “tax and spend” Atlanta uber-liberal that wants to throw everyone’s money to the wind. Not in the least. I am a bit concerned, however, about the City’s safety net institutions (like Grady), public infrastructure (MARTA), its public school system (whose funding would be drastically reduced by creating Milton County) and other governmental entities funded by the current County tax base. Could they be run more effectively? Sure. Goldman Sachs could benefit from efficiency. But do they deserve to be decimated? Not at all. They serve a critical function.
I’m assuming the folks in North Fulton County never intend to get into an accident or suffer from severe trauma injuries because their tax dollars support Georgia’s best trauma center in Grady. I just can’t take lightly the viability of that kind of state asset being undermined. And if it won’t be as a result of Milton County being created, then Color Blind please provide this information. And even if it’s “hands off” on Grady and MARTA, a host of other publicly-funded entities in the City of Atlanta may suffer. Yet again, this raises the question of Ms. Borders and her event with Ms. Riley. Also Colorblind, why exactly would Lisa (not just the “Three Stooges”) make mention of the disastrous impact on Grady and MARTA that a re-created Milton County would have? I doubt your “hands off” contention is correct, but I am open to being corrected.

If you read “BLACK COMMENTARY’s website and article “KASIM REED: FOR THE RICH AND THE RACIST”, it shows that this guy and his law firm fights discrimination lawsuits levied by women and minorities. If we thought Shirley was “ARROGANT” and “NASTY” during her tenure as mayor, my God, what do you think we will get from this guy??!! Check this guys history out as a lawyer and as Shirleys campaign manager. There are some “HORRIFIC” stories regarding his loyalty to people who helped in the streets, put Shirley in office. As soon as Shirley won, I hear they cut all ties with those who helped knock on thise doors and put up those signs and shook those signs on the corner. They treated them as if they were with the opposition candidate. This shows Reed loyalty to his employees, who helped him and Shirley, as a manager. My what do you think he will be like as mayor of thousands of employees. BELIEVE ME, ARROGANCE, UNCOMMPASSION, AND DISLOYALTY WILL PREVAIL. Again, Color Blind why would Ms. Borders make mention of MARTA and Grady if they wouldn’t be impacted by the creation of Milton County? You’ve yet to answer the question. I’ve never heard anyone else make the contention that you’ve made. Even if it’s not in the bill, cut and paste an article that says this. I don’t need the legislation; just substantiate your claims. That’s all I’m asking.
@ Vote for Lisa Please! — I know Ms. Borders personally disagrees with the creation of Milton County. She chairs the Grady Foundation, so I know how she feels personally. See my comments above: it’s the OPTICS that should concern us all. It looks awful for her and plays into a perception of Ms. Borders as a pawn of interests that may not have the City’s best interests in mind. Whether true or not, this fundraiser has to make you scratch your head even as a supporter.
What’s the falsehood here? She is having a fundraiser held by Lynne Riley. I’ve never said I’d cast my vote for her on the basis of this. I’ve simply said it raises questions and plays into an unfortunate characterization of Ms. Borders. Is she that hard-pressed for cash such that she has to now rely on sworn enemies of the City of Atlanta?
Their friendship aside, this fundraiser should rightly give Atlantans pause. As we all know, there is a contingent in the Metro region (and in the State of Georgia) that does everything in their power to undermine the City of Atlanta. Why have their ilk raise money for you when you’re running for Mayor? It’s a simple question, and this “building coalitions” nonsense doesn’t hold water. You can build coalition without accepting money from the folks you want to build coalition with.
