Reed raises $1.4 million in ATL mayoral campaign

Kasim Reed just became the first of the major candidates for mayor of Atlanta to show how much money he’s raised in the last three months — $446,087 – and how much he has left in the bank — $213,124.

Total raised for the campaign: $1,411,613.

See a copy of Reed’s summary here. The names of donors have yet to be released, but Reed says he’s built a “diverse list of over 800 contributors.”

“Our strong showing in this quarter illustrates that voters recognize that there are serious issues facing our city and they have placed their trust in my candidacy,” Reed said in a statement.

Atlanta attorney Jesse Spikes reported raising $120,172 in the last three months, and a total of $596,091 for the campaign. He reports $44,708 in cash on hand – but his report also includes a $71,000 loan. See the details here.

I’m surprised Borders is so broke with all those Republican contributions: http://atlantaprogressivenews.com/news/0523.html

It’s looking like Kasim Reed is a serious candidate. I wasn’t expecting this. Borders must be very nervous. No runoff for her.

This last month is going to be interesting. The candidates can only play nice and hold back for so long. It’s about to get intense. As it should be…this is a big city race.

I’ve seen Reed’s commercial on ESPN like 20 times. His money is definitely working for him as we speak.

The Bible says to look at the character of the person’s children to know his or her suitability as a “watchman on the wall of the city.” No luck with Reed or Norwood. In this “Blue” liberal bastion there’s no shame in being gay, Kasim and Mary, but there is shame in lacking integrity. Be honest, you two. What gives? Tell us why you see the world the way your lives prove out. No G-d? Hate children? In the closet? Atlanta is too important to have an unevolved loser at the helm. If G-d hasn’t blessed you with children or a righteous marriage, why should The New Jerusalem expect blessings with your running the show?

Jamie Foxx, TLC, Ludacris, T.I. all giving him money and his name recognition is still a laugh. When will Kasim’s camp realize that he scares white people and cannot win this election.

You’re an idiot and obviously a Political “Outsider”. Kasim has a lot more white support than you Borders supporters know. Including the support of this white person.

Lisa Borders is Republican, business elite’s lapdog and everyone knows it. I want to know why she’s being supported by so many Republicans.

Your a little off on this one, Galloway. All the candidates released numbers and the Business Chronicle has them:

Reed is clearly in the pockets of developers and business. According to the Saporta Report, “Reed led among larger contributors…dominated corporate donations to the mayor’s race, while Norwood and Borders set the pace for percentage of contributions from individuals, the analysis showed.” That article also shows that, “former state Sen. Kasim Reed and attorney Jesse Spikes are relying on contributors from a third geographic pool: outside of Georgia.”
http://saportareport.com/blog/?p=1996

Let’s not forget the APN article that creidited Reed with the most money of any candidate from developers saying, “Big developers and other real estate interests gave the most in financial donations to State Sen. Kasim Reed, in the race for Mayor of Atlanta last quarter.”

The big money and power brokers obviously own Reed. We Atlanta residents can look forward to his election and four more years of developers and big business setting Atlanta’s agenda. More rampant, uncontrolled development; more highways, more lanes, no high speed rail or maglev (pavers and developers and airport tycoons don’t like), no pedestrian friendly city, no parks, no law enforcement; just the same old crapola.

For arguments sake, let’s assume all of the candidates probably received contributions from large corporations, or people who work for large corporations. That being said, I hope the people who read and respond to the stories take the time to review the issues. The source of candidates’ funds does not rank high on my list of concerns. And I hope the media will start asking these candidates tough questions. Why is it that no journalist called Mary Norwood to the carpet after she admitted during a televised debate that she was not able to get obtain information regarding the city’s finances? Seriously? You’re on the city council for crying out loud!! And why is it that no one has questioned how Kasim Reed will pay for 750 additional police officers when a recent grant from the federal government for $11M will pay for 50 officers? Seriously? That was one of the the questions at the Spelman College forum: how will you pay for the additional public safety personnel? Instead of answering the question, Reed talked about the 3 mil tax increase. People in the city know how much the taxes were increased and don’t need you to remind them!! I could care less what kind of vehicle the next mayor will or won’t drive!! I could care less who has nicest commercial, big deal! No one cares which big name celebrities endorsed a candidate!! This city needs a mayor who can cut wasteful spending, balance a budget and has the pedigree to work with the business community to move the city forward…that eliminates Norwood. We all agree more police officers are needed, so the candidate who has a plan to pay for the additional police should be the person getting serious consideration…that eliminates Reed. Wake up people! Wake up!

It looks like a Reed is building a lot of momentum coming into the final 30 days. I expect to see him and Norwood in the run-off. Borders is fading away by the day…

The last thing Atlanta needs is another Shirley clone like Borders or a crook like Reed:

at the mayoral forum sponsored by georgia stand up..kasim reed explicitly indicated where the money for the additional police will come from – in fact…call his camp and get the answer…understand that taking over the job of mayor of this city is no small feat…stop damning the candidates before they get in…in addition to paying attention to the mayor…pay attention to appointed positions after that mayor gets in, because the big brains that ran the city caused this problem…the mayor just signed off on it!

Looks like its headed towards a Reed-Norwood runoff, and you know Reed is going to easily defeat Norwood!!!! Norwood has no substance at all. And, Borders, we may as well have a Reed-Spikes runoff, at least we’ll have some substance.

it’s obvious that you’re a amateur when it comes to Atlanta politics. Norwood knows nothing about turnout, the way Kasim and his team do.

Kasim Reed is looking more and more like the candidate to beat in this race. Norwood’s baloon deflated weeks ago and Borders, well is she even worth mentioning?
