Your morning jolt: Joe Wilson’s bad day

So there was Barack Obama, addressing a joint session of Congress _ when suddenly a town hall meeting broke out.

Joe Wilson

Joe Wilson

The president had just called out Sarah Palin _ though not by name _ and others who claimed the Democratic plan for health care reform would create death panels. “That’s simply a lie,” Obama said.

Republican members of Congress sat on their hands.

The president then moved on to pronounce his health care proposal free of benefits for illegal immigrants.

“You lie!” shouted U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson, a fiery Republican from Lexington County, S.C., one of the most conservative areas of that conservative state. He has, in the past, had trouble controlling what passes beyond his teeth.

Not a good moment for Republicans out to protray themselves as the rational, cool-headed protectors of American health care.

This from First Read at MSNBC:

Remember how conservatives were able to turn Cindy Sheehan into someone very difficult for the anti-war Democrats in Congress to support during the Bush years? Well, Wilson could end up providing that kind of symbolism. In short, he gave voice — literally — to the president’s attempts to paint some of his opponents as shrill.

Anyone watching saw Obama’s reaction. “Not true,” he said, then continued his promise to confront those who misrepresent his health care initiative.

Various news agencies _ the Associated Press, Bloomberg, the New York Times _ cast their eyes around the U.S. House chamber. USA Today was the first to publish a photo of Wilson in the act. From the New York Times:

After the speech, Rahm Emanuel, the White House chief of staff who sat a few rows in front of Mr. Wilson, said he immediately approached senior Republican lawmakers to encourage them to identify the heckler and urge him to issue an apology quickly. “No president has ever been treated like that. Ever,” Mr. Emanuel said.

From Politico:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi directed a fierce frown at [Wilson]; first lady Michelle Obama pursed her lips and shook her head from side to side. Vice President Joe Biden looked down and shook his head too…. Wilson appeared to consult his Blackberry for much of the rest of Obama’s speech. He shook his head defiantly after several of the president’s statements. When Obama finished, Wilson bolted from the chamber.

From USA Today:

The remark was clearly audible on the floor and the galleries above. “Heads snapped,” said House Rules Committee Chairwoman Louise Slaughter, D-N.Y. “I’ve been here a long time,” added the New York Democrat, a 23-year House veteran. “I’ve never heard anyone accost a president like that.” Rep. David Dreier, of California, the top-ranking Republican on the House Rules Committee, had a similar reaction. “I cringed,” he said. “I think it’s just unfortunate.” Wilson, in his fifth term, told a town-hall-style meeting last month that bipartisanship is key to resolving the nation’s health care problems. “I give a speech every day on the floor (of Congress) about how Democrats and Republicans should be working together to reform health care,” The State newspaper in South Carolina quoted Wilson as saying.

Again from Politico:

Within 15 minutes after Obama wrapped up his remarks, Wilson’s website server had crashed and his Wikipedia page had been locked on account of “vandalism.” In an interview with CNN immediately after the president’s address, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) called Wilson’s behavior “totally disrespectful,” and joined a chorus of Democrats calling on the congressman to apologize. Wilson’s office soon followed with a statement expressing regret for the outburst. “This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill,” Wilson said. “While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.”

This wasn’t the first walk-back for Wilson. In a 2004 debate over Iraq, he questioned the patriotism of Rep. Bob Filner (D-Calif.), calling him “viscerally anti-American.”

The same year Wilson trash-talked Sen. John Kerry, calling on him to apologize for the testimony the future presidential candidate gave to a Senate committee in 1971 about the Vietnam war. Former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland quickly noted that Wilson had avoided fighting in the war by receiving a student deferment.

In public, at least, Wilson’s Republican colleagues weren’t about to offer solace.

“I’m embarrassed by that,” U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss told my AJC colleague Bob Keefe. “That shouldn’t have happened.”

U.S. Rep. John Lewis passed his judgment this morning:

“I have seen every President address a joint session of Congress in the past 23 years, in good times and bad. I have never heard any member of Congress yell out during a speech and call the President a liar. This kind of disrespect should not be tolerated, and I am hoping that the Republican Conference will take some action. If they do not act, then I think the Democratic Caucus should respond to this kind of disregard for the office of the President.”

Beyond Wilson, there were other scenes that my colleague Mr. Keefe found worth noting on Wednesday night:

_ Chambliss somehow got seated next to Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Alabama), who is Georgia’s staunchest opponent in the tri-state water war.

Chambliss gave Shelby a playful jab in the stomach before Obama’s began speaking. Later, they joked about the water situation, making light of Obama’s health care plans.

“I told him we ought to figure out some way to figure out a way to pay for it through Medicare,” Chambliss said later.

–U.S. Rep. David Scott (D-Atlanta) isn’t a senior member of Congress, but he somehow wrangled one of the best seats in the House for the president’s speech.

Scott sat in the very front row, just to the right of the president and ahead of luminaries such as Sen. John Kerry and Sen. Daniel Inouye, one of the longest serving members of Congress.

Contacted later, Scott first indicated he got the seat because of his work on health care reform – but then acknowledged that he happened to be in the right place at the right time.

“They asked me to sit there,” he said.

_ U.S. Reps. Tom Price of Roswell, Paul Broun of Athens and Phil Gingrey of Marietta, were among some Republicans who brought props with them to Wednesday night’s speech.

Whenever the president mentioned he was open to discussion and input from Republicans, they held up copies of Republican-sponsored alternatives to the Democrats’ health care reform bill – including the alternative drafted by the Republican Study Committee, a conservative House caucus that Price chairs.

“After talking at Republicans tonight, we can only hope that the President will now talk with Republicans about our patient-centered ideas for positive health care reform,” Price said in a statement after the speech.

Hey Jim:

I just wanted you to know that we sent our release out last night about 10:45 PM. So the Congressman really didn’t weigh in this AM. We sent it out last night. When did you get it?

From one picture I saw, it looked like Jack Kingston was sitting directly beside Wilson. I wonder how mortified Kingston was to be at the center of his party’s final meltdown.

Wilson was the highlight of the evening. Obama lied seven times during his speech and I think Congressman Wilson was just expressing the frustration many of us felt. We need regular British style Q & A’s between the President and Congress where he has to answer direct questions and his lies can be exposed.

Addison “Joe” Wilson is a “silk-stockinged” whitetrash Vietnam law school draft-dodger on the payroll of Healthcare Fascism. He now plays “dress up” with Lindsay Graham as a Guard JAG officer trying to compensate for being no man and no American

It’s bad enough that Rep. Wilson’s behavior was disrespectful — it’s even worse that he was dead wrong. Section 246 of the bill specifically forbids payments “on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States.”

Joe wilson is a disgusting man. His democratic opponent, Rob Miller, came very close to defeating Wilson last cycle and will, hopefully, win next November.

If only the public knew more about Joe Wilson…they would never have elected him. Not only did he disrespect the Office of the President of the United States last, he also disrespected his own office and every man, woman and child of the United States…especially the residents of SC-2.

This is guy, Joe Wilson, campaigns for reelection at soldier funerals and memorials services. This outburst last night is the last straw!.

Please go to Actblue ( http://www.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/19079 ) or Rob Miller’s website and contribute something http://www.robmillerforcongress.com and contribute something. America is a nation of tolerance…but we can not tolerate such malicious behavior, such as that demonstrated by Congressman Wilson last night.

Republicans to end Medicare

U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt, who’s running to represent Missouri in the United States Senate, said during a radio interview that it would be “best” if Medicare and Medicaid had never been created, ignoring the hundreds of thousands of Missourians who rely on these programs.
Sen. David Vitter, of Louisiana, wants to deny health coverage – to Canadians. He said of his plan to allow reimportation of drugs from Canada, “My ultimate goal is to use that to cause that system to collapse.”
Sen. James Inhofe is dead-set against any Democratic proposals. “I don’t have to read it, or know what’s in it. I’m going to oppose it anyways,” he told an Oklahoma newspaper

There are too many “Joe Wilsons” in politics who are egotistical and only in Washington to promote themselves. For those of us in the real world, think about if you were to yell out like that in a business meeting. How long do you think you would keep your job after that? It seems to me that SC needs to take a look at who they are putting into office….Mark Sanford and now Joe Wilson.

Wilson proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that it’s Republicans whl are shrill and unable to be civil. I hope this hurts more than Wislson’s chance for re-election. I hope people will wake up and see exactly the kind of political leadership the GOP offers voters — mean-spirited and self-gratifying.

Wilson is a patriot. I’m sending $2400 dollars to his re-election. Joe Wilson-there goes my hero. I have more on my rightful blog. People, this man just couldn’t hold it in. He’s fighting for his country because he fears for its future. I cried at that part in this pointless speech.
I admit that it’s fun to see Hussein getting on his knees begging to get his big gov’t plan passed. Guess what-it’s not going anywhere because I see the fire in Orrin Hatch’s eyes.
There are two things that got me so upset. 1) Telling me to go buy insurance. Even though I respect those who work in insurance, I don’t need it. I save money by not having it. If I’m under the weather, I get advice from the hard working doctors at my church. 2)How dare this installed-president say that the War on Terror was wrong and that’s why we can’t have a big gov’t takeover of health care. What? I almost wanted to throw my apple pie at the TV when this Socialist leader said that!
Who looked good last night? John Boehner-tanned, relaxed and ready to take down any Commie Lib who looks cross-eyed at him.
Who looked horrid? The ugly Commie witch Pelosi. She rode in on her broom to sit behind Hussein and tried to keep her Botox in place.

Fools and their money are soon parted. Dry drunk Bill White and “Joe” Wilson, a Vietnam law school draft-dodger who now plays “military” dress-up with his “girlfriend” Lindsay Graham, deserve each other. Send us the link to the website with the record of the contribution to your fellow whitetrash, Big Talk.

Did someone mention disrespect for the office of president? What about Bill Clinton and his now famous BJ from Monika,on payroll at that.
Oh, and did he not lie under oath.
What about that birth certificate he can’t seem to find. Did any one mention something about being a natural born citizen, in order to be president. It seems to me that there was something obama could not remember Rev. wright saying after sitting in his congeration for twenty years. Oh, my how could I have ever forgotten Democrats don’t lie, they just can’t remember. Obama dosen’t seem to mind disrespecting the American people. What about that pledge of alegence?
I WOULD SAY JOE WILSON WAS THE ONLY REAL MAN IN ATTENDANCE.
The only thing Joe did wrong was he appoligized.
Did any one notice that nacy and hillary had on red.I always thought witches wore black . Maybe they were trying to make a fashion statement.
I’m still waiting for that Legal birth certificate.

All Joe had to say was “POLITICIAN!” or even “LAWYER!” – most of the country understands those colloquialisms/connotations.

Joe’s biggest problem now has nothing to do with “44″, but rather, the law of “judge not, lest ye be judged”. I hope his robes are white, as the dogs of politics start sniffing.

“Bush=Clinton=Bush=Obama=UN/NWO”

The “kinder, gentler” approach is failing – Troops to be unleashed upon Americans soon.
Make your peace…while we still have it.

The REAL “long-legged mack-daddy”/narcissist is GHW – all others are his soldiers. Notice the only two positions that HAVE NOT changed – Bernanke ($$$) and Gates (”WAR”).

9/11 was an inside job – physics and science are “non-partisanl”.

WAKE UP!!!

Today every American should read “The New Pearl Harbor,” now a free pdf d/l on Google Scholar: http://www.angelfire.com/biz/hankramey/The%20New%20Pearl%20Harbor.pdf
This is a sedulous proof, by a scholar of unimpeached integrity, that Bush and Cheney committed 9/11.
It was on this same day in 1987 that Zyklon-B salesman John Paul II was stoppered by G-d at the Tamiami Arena in front of a quarter million of his followers, and on TV. Extirpate Rome’s Fifth Column and remove Joe Wilson its front.

Joe Wilson is a member of the sons of the confederated . This a fact. 2 he is a officer in the national guard and he call his commanding officer a lie. If this had have happen to Bush the wind nut would have lost it. The first graders (the GOP) disrespectful to the office of president. This is the Face and heart of the Taliban southern confederate GOP.

I love these guys that say that Joe Wilson is a hero and a patriot. Their definition of hero and patriot can not be found in any dictionary and if they really think Joe defines those words their bar for becoming a hero is very very low! Would these people teach their kids to behave the way Joe did??? Last count his opponent has received close to a million dollars to defeat this hoodlum. It is interesting, contradictory and ironic to see how much he collects from the government run health care insurance he and his family are covered under.

Joe Wilson was wrong when he disrespected the President of the United States. He is an adult and truly should have known better than to interrupt anyone, not the mention the President. He disrespected everyone in that room including other Republicans. If anyone does not think he was wrong they are blinded by ignorance and racism. This country is going down the drain because of hate and racism. We are all Americans and what makes us Americans is not our skin color. Hate is a deep seated problem and a sin; we are corrupting our children and allowing them to see us in the worst way. I hope Joe Wilson is punished so that people will not think that disrespect should be honored.
