The Bill of Rights are not liberties granted by the Government to the people. The Bill of Rights protects the God Given rights of the people from the government. The biggest fear the writers of the Bill of Rights had was the government would attempt to take control of the country from the people. These were folks who knew firsthand the tyranny of a government out of control and the sacrifice and effort it took to break the hold of tyranny. They knew tyrants fear armed opposition and through the Second Amendment sought to make sure the American people were always armed against tyranny from without and within the country. Those that came armed to these meetings were within their God given and Constitutionally protected rights to remind those in government that the Founders of this nation have already provided a method to hold tyrants in check. No one threatened the President or brandished their weapons. They were simply sending the message this is a free Republic not a Socialist Democracy and the right of peaceful assembley and to petition for redress of greivances still exists despite those who long for a "Nanny-State" to cradle them from birth to grave. Those who so fear the mere presence of a firearm, I suggest you try a new habit and READ the story of the founding of this nation and what it took to break free of tyranny. Pay particular attention to the writings of those who pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor to bring forth a truly free Republic where the people were the true rulers and the government is responsible to the people. Stop getting you education from CNN and get out and read for a change. You will be truely surprised what this country should be if we followed the simple rules defined by the Bill of Rights.
