In the political world, if you’re being talked about in August, rarely is it a good thing.
The health care debate and Georgia continued to intersect this afternoon during a White House session between reporters and Press Secretary Robert Gibbs. My AJC colleague Bob Keefe just sent a transcript.
We’ll take the last question first. It concerned the swastika spray-painted on the sign outside the office of U.S. Rep. David Scott. Reporters couldn’t overlook the fact that the Rev. Joseph Lowery, whom President Barack Obama had just awarded the Medal of Freedom, hails from (roughly) the same town.
Q: Robert, you know, you’re talking about people who were breaking barriers and things on the racial aspect. You’re talking about Sidney Poitier, Desmond Tutu, as well as Joseph Lowery today. But, you know, this health care debate has boiled down to, in some parts of the country, into a racial issue. Has the President gone into that matter, looked at it, has he talked about it, has he called David Scott, the swastika issue on his sign — David Scott has said, look, this was not meant — (inaudible) — for the President. What does the President….
Gibbs: I haven’t seen those comments. Look, I would say — I think I’ve said this here before — I don’t think there’s a single act or event that we are debating or discussing right now, or have for at least as long as my memory can go back, that should or could be compared to the tragedy of the Holocaust.
I think whenever that’s offered up into a public debate it is a sign that things have gotten, for those that enter into it, completely out of hand. It has absolutely no place in the dialogue that we’re having. We ought to be able to, as the President said, have conversations with one another, not over one another.
And the notion that we’re having a public policy debate at the end of a spray paint can on somebody’s sign I think is ridiculous. And I think anybody, again, who offers up that sort of analogy is — ought to be ashamed of themselves, because they could not be more in the wrong.
The same press conference took up the issue of Obama’s Tuesday remarks about U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, which ended up with Gibbs reading directly from a Washington Post interview with the Georgia senator, published on Tuesday.
To wit:
Q: Senator Isakson put out a statement yesterday, also taking issue with what the President describes as his position and his involvement in the end-of-life legislation in the House. Do you want to amend or correct anything the President said, or you said about that? Because Mr. Isakson has a completely different interpretation than the President used and you used yesterday. He didn’t have — he had no role in the House legislation. He opposes the language in the House —
Gibbs: Well, I didn’t say — let’s take what I’ve talked about on the back of the plane. Let me just read what — let me just read the question, a series of questions and answers from Senator Isakson: “How did this become a question of euthanasia?” Senator Isakson: “I have no idea. I understand, and you have to check this out, I just had a phone call where someone said Sarah Palin’s Web site had talked about the House bill having death panels on it where people would be euthanized. How someone could take an end-of-life directive, or a living will as that is nuts. You’re putting the authority in the individual rather than the government. I don’t know how that got so mixed up.”
Question two: “You’re saying this is not a question of government, it’s for individuals?” Senator Isakson: “It empowers you to be able to make decisions at a difficult time, rather than having the government make them for you.”
Question three: “The policy here, as I understand it, is that Medicare would cover a counseling session with your doctor on end-of-life options.” Senator Isakson: “Correct. And it’s a voluntary deal.”
Q: I believe those are answers in response to his amendment in the HELP bill, not the longer and more defined involvement of these end-of-life panels that’s in the House bill. That’s how it’s been explained to me by his people, so I’m just wondering if —
Gibbs: Well, I would ask them, those people to interpret: “I just had a phone call where someone said Sarah Palin’s Web site had talked about the House bill having death panels on it, where people would be euthanized. How someone could take an end-of-life directive or a living will as that is nuts.” Not my words. His.
Q: Right, I understand. But what the President talked about yesterday was saying that Senator Isakson had some role in helping to craft or developed the House legislation —
Gibbs: I think what the President mentioned —
Q: — implying that he supported it. And I’m just saying that Senator Isakson denies that he had any role and he doesn’t support it.
Gibbs: Again, I don’t think that’s what the President was implying. I think the President mentioned that Mr. Isakson had been in the House — that may have been some of the confusion. He was a member of — did, obviously, represent Atlanta suburbs before becoming a U.S. senator from Georgia.
I think, again, what the President was trying to say was, in a question about some of the misinformation, asked specifically about euthanasia and death panels, and I think — and I said this also in the back of the plane yesterday — I think what Senator Isakson says in addressing that misinformation could not be more clear, that for someone to take, as he says, talked about the House bill — his words, not mine — “having death panels on it where people would be euthanized, how somebody could come up with that” — and roughly paraphrasing — in that sense is nuts.
Q: Right. And I’m not trying to beat this into the ground, but he doesn’t support the language in the House bill. You can have differences over —
Gibbs: No, no, I understand. What I’m saying is I think there may be some confusion —
Q: — of end-of-life counseling is and be clear to understand that neither of them calls for anything approaching euthanasia —
Gibbs: I think the one thing that —
Q: Setting that aside for a second —
Gibbs: I mean, again, one thing that —
Q: — he doesn’t back the House language, had no role in it, and believes that yesterday there was comments from the President that indicated that —
Gibbs: I certainly didn’t read it that way and I don’t think my comments —
Q: — should be interpreted that way.
Gibbs: Well, I didn’t say that. To interpret it that way would be nuts. But —
Q: He’s too sensitive about this?
Gibbs: Again, I read what he said in an interview that was posted on WashingtonPost.com yesterday. I think if you go back and look at some amendments that he’s offered and cosponsored —
Q: He (inaudible) —
Gibbs: Right, but this — he’s offered and cosponsored other amendments with Senator [John] Rockefeller in dealing with this. I think — whether this is uncomfortable or not, I think he and the President agree.
Responded Isakson spokeswoman Joan Kirchner:
“Johnny supports living wills and durable power of attorney. He supports individuals making the choice for themselves — whether to get one, what should be in it, and whom to seek advice from in drafting it.
He opposes the current House bill because it is the government deciding who has the conversation, how often they have the conversation, and what is to be discussed in that conversation.”

all minorities, blacks, mexicans, asians, latinos…these incidents show what might be expected when you voice your opinion…especially against republicans. republicans only like you when you rah, rah, hah behind them…when you do not rah with them, they pull out swatikas, and cross burnings, and tapped phone calls, and demands that you leave “their” country…you are welcomed just as long as you give them powers over you and yours!!!

2 compare republicans to swastikas is just as ludicris as saying the NAACP and the bloods/crips are the same thing!
Why is “white pride” such a bad thing when others celebrate “black pride”, “asian pride”, “mexican pride”? How come its only white nationalist like the BNP that get called racist?
Face it, the blacks are the most racist group in the US and South Africa. Did you know blacks are 3 times more likely than whites in the US to commit a hate crime?
Ahhh what the ignorant liberals hide to promote “diversity”
How come this one swastika (probably by a tennager doing a prank) is such a big deal while im seeing gang signs on every stop sign and building in town??
:Last time i checked, it wasnt the white nationalist doing carjackings and murders throught Atlanta/Miami, New Orleans, Detroit!
My favorite show is the first 48, the liberals cant hide the ugly truth when its reality tv!

Never forget…. being a liberal and trusting the wrong person can have a ugly ending, just ask the cancer researcher in midtown. Her last words 2 her friends were “i dont want him to think we dont trust him because hes black”
And people teach your Daughters the truth….. women who sleep with black males are 3 times more likely to get beat, and 33 TIMES more likely to get AIDS!
In fact AIDS is the top killer of AA women 25-35, and over 70% of these women got AIDS from sleeping with a black man that was unaware he had the disease.

Never forget….being a right winger and doing the bidding of the insurance companies and big business can keep you a slave big business and the insurance companies for your entire life. Just ask the guy who worked in midtown and had a heart attack. His company downsized…. he lost his job…..and could not get insurance because he had a pre existing condition. Those wonderful insurance companies who are lobbying like heck against a national health care plan are the same folks who determine coverage based on the fact that they want your premiums but don’t want to pay when you are sick or dying.
Hey but that’s ok! There are plenty of uneducated, bitter folks out there who will vote and do the bidding of the rich and powerful even though they are cutting their own throats when they do it.
I love this country! Even idiots have the God given right to be idiots and participate in the process! Even racists who try to pass themselves off as logical, unbias individuals can be exposed for what they really are simply by posting their own words in an open forum like this one.

“The Truth” – do you realize how ignorant your comments make you sound. There is nothing racist about celebrating your heritage so long long as you don’t promote hate against other races or culture. The so-called “if we celebrate white pride, then we are racist” argument is so lame and ignorant. Of course you are going be called racist when you promote your race or culture at the expense of discriminating and hating other races and cultures. And that argument holds true for anyone, regardless of race or culture.
Then you said this: “How come its only white nationalist like the BNP that get called racist?
The BNP promotes discrimination against other races and cultures.
Ok since you want to bring up the BNP, here is a an excerpt of their views on immagration:
“We want Britain to remain – or return to – the way it has traditionally been. We accept that Britain always will have ethnic minorities and have no problem with this as long as they remain minorities and do not change nor seek to change the fundamental culture and identity of the indigenous peoples of the British Isles.”
Whats funny is that is that British people did the same thing to the indigenous of American that the BNP doesn’t want to happen in Britian.
Second of all, the swastika is nothing to take lightly, even if it was a teen. Your suggestion of this shows how insensitive you are to what the representation of the swastika means to a lot of people.
Finally, if you trying to use television program that has been carefully design as a form of entertainment as evidence that something is 100% truth in 100% of all cases, then you can only taken as joke. So everything you say or has said is more funny than fact until you prove otherwise.

As a independent, i agree with health care overhall. I DONT think some scumbag rapist/ gangmember in prison should get the same care for cancer or whatever as a hardworking person in society. Its no secret the govt wants to kill off the elderly and puts stuff in the public drinking water for population control. Republicans and Democrats are both guilty of this sort of thinking.
Whats scary about socialism coming on is that over time we will loose alot of our freedoms just like Europe has. Alot of this is done in the name of “stopping hate” by passing more and tougher hate crimes legislation. Even tho this legislation only seems to affect whites. If the Univ of Tenn couple that was killed/ raped/ multilated by thugs in Knoxville wasnt a “hate crime” according to liberals and the far left…… then WHAT IS!??
Further proof that “hate crimes” legislation is just a sham to fight against a mostly imaginary “white racism”. Common… we all know in the city when walking to your car at night, its not the “white racist” u gotta worry about! Just ask Vernon Forrest.

Tim: immigration in Europe IS a serious problem! At least the leaders of the BNP have the balls to confront the problem and dont have the cloud of “white guilt” like the far left loons.
Did you know the EU plans to import 50 million Africans into Europe over the next 10 years?
Can you imagine going to Paris/London on vacation and it being just as dangerous as Detroit or New Orleans? The left govt is allowing mass immigration from 3rd world countries not because they feel sorry for the immigrants, but because of greed!
And yes it IS a danger to the native white population.
In fact in Sweden has seen a 900% increase in violent crime since allowing mass immigration from Muslim countries! What do you know about Muslim gang rape of white/western women? http://barenakedislam.wordpress.com/2009/02/21/sweden-soaring-crime-rates-directly-related-to-rampant-muslim-immigration/

You liberal McFlys out there don’t understand quite a bit on this Hussein Nobama Healthscare thing.
A)I didn’t see anything going wrong at these town halls. Patriotic Americans have every right to question this Socialistic gov’t.
B)Congressman Scott got what was coming to him. Now I don’t support vandalizing signs; I understand the rage and symbolism behind the act.
Let’s face it, this is like Nazi Germany. Does anyone remember a guy named Adolf? He rounded up many of his people’s guns and then…y’all know the rest of that story.
I liked that Cal Thomas opinion piece about how seculars could care less about life because they don’t believe on God. And if you don’t lead a Christ-centered existence, you form a Socialist gov’t like we have now. That’s why there will be death panels very soon. Ah, George Orwell should see us now.

All of a sudden a black congressman pulls out the race card when a liberal agenda encounters pressure.
Racism will never die people, it is a tool for all races to use. It is used to extort and empower. I truely wish their were greater penalties when for individuals who claim racial discrimination only to prove unfounded.
I am sure the good citizens of the city of Atlanta will now claim that I am a racist to. Easy to call names, harder to look in the mirror!

98.7% (give or take .3%) of the worlds problems can be traced back to islam and blacks. For those of you who will call me a racist, first read the definition of the word, second look at all of the crime statistics. Wherever in the world you have significant populations of muslims or blacks, crime is astronomical. Education is non-existent. Freedom is but a distant dream. Civilizations are crumbling. The African continent is the wealthiest on the planet in natural resources, yet they are the poorest population in history.
Now my point is this, we have a president who is both black and muslim. We have a congress that has far more minorities in relation to the population as a whole because of gerry mandering. We gave blacks every advantage and they screwed it up. It is over.
In the words of Bob Basso, “buy a gun, you’ll need it”.

I don’t believe some of the stuff I have been reading. Is it because we have a Black president and the republicans didn’t win the election? This is 2009 and what I’m reading it seems like we are back in the early 1900s.What ashame that some people are this backwards! I will leave it at that!!!

Isakson has his head in the sand. And Jim one more thing. Smryna is not Atlanta, so dont give people who are not local to Atlanta that it is the same city. Having a parent born in 1922 in Stone Mountain and spending my 59 years in the metro area and judging from the previous replies to your column, there are still places here that are infested with racism, infested with ignorance and infested with the type of people who have no thought other than blame others for their lot in this life. Look at those town hall morons. It is the same group of people whose thinking has made this a hated country ever where in this world.

This is what us Lefties are saying, “A lot of you have taken a discussion about healthcare reform and absolutely turned it racial.” Once its gone racial, then the nut cases come out in droves. Sure, Rep. Scott painted the swatstika on his own sign..give me a break. I guess he also wrote the letter that referred to him as a n-word too? And made the calls threatening his life and family? He also paid that doctor to show up at his scheduled transportation meeting to ask the question about healthcare as well? He also had him go on Channel 11 the next day to express his purported “outrage” about how the Representative “shouted him down” while those others that were there with the good Doctor were disrupting the meeting. Talk about wearing tin-foil hats!! LMAO!! I have seen my fellow citizens, who I know can’t stand the sight of a black, hispanic, or an asian person, carry signs that call the President a Nazi, a Socialist, and God knows what else (some that were so offensive that they don’t deserve mention in this retort) exercising their right to freedom of speech no matter how incendiary, yet, they feel that this country is slipping away from them? Huh?? Have we started removing citizens from this country? Have we eliminated the tenets of the Constitution? This is not Iran, where they have called out the miitary too cease this, although fabricated, outcry from a few. And let us be clear, if you look at the media reports, if you’ve been too a healthcare reform townhall, if you’ve paid attention to the politicians who are fueling this break from the reality, you will find that is overwhelmingly the acts of white people (save Eric Gladney who fell down and was seen walking normally afterwards before being interviewed in a wheel chair for the cameras in a full leg cast). That’s kinda like the young lady who carved the backwards “B” in her face and claimed Obama operatives did it during the campaign. The more frightening part is that those who have reacted so adversely to the call for an intelligent discussion by trying to shut down that dialouge. They have allowed themselves to be led down this path of BS by the insurance lobby. the very people who’ve created this mountain of debt, and have denied you treatment (if needed), have bankrupted your family, friends, and those you don’t even know. You’ve been led down this path by your very own select politicians who are/have been funded by the insurance lobby. While they get rich and we go broke or die. By the very pundits who see the loss of position and power they’ve forged for themselves, to people who look like you and me. By the media who like to fashion controversy to drive ratings by pitting this country against itself. It’s crazy that people think that the President is NOT from this country, that he’s against white people, when his mother was white (thanks, Glenn Beck), that he’s going to fail (compliments of Rush Limbaugh), and that he has not shown his “long form birth certificate (whatever the hell that is,” (Lou Dobbs),and the appreciation of that rhetoric by a relatively small amount of the public, clearly shows a detachment from the true reality. Out country sees this. That LARGER part of the public that is sitting there shaking there heads and wondering “What the Hell?” Death panels, Fear, pulling the plug on Grandma, Racial Attacks, Political Punditry, Lies, Misinformation, Namae-calling, Bible waving, constitutional illiteracy, supporting the status quo, Big Pharma, Insurance Companies, banking, lobbyists…whew.
Is this who runs our country? Is this who controls the discussion on Healthcare Reform? It’s amazing to me, that in my almost 50 years, that this country remains as divided as it was in the 60’s and 70’s. I pray that our children be better than this, if they can survive what the argument is about, the continued robbery of this country by the Big Banks and Insurance Companies. Our issues aren’t with the enemies off our shores, it is the enemy within that is sucking us dry. I, for one, applaud the President for stanading up on behalf of all of us, even with our vast differences, to try and do something that will benefit all of us LONG TERM, by offering what every other citizen in this world receives, Healthcare. Not through a HMO, not through Private Industry, not through a two payer system. Healthcare for children and the elderly. Who doesn’t want that? Oh, see above.

Whites are as guilty as throwing the race card as blacks are. But the truth is that there are more white racists in Georgia than anywhere in the US

Funny cool rock…. when i was carjacked in Marietta by 2 black males back in 2001 and they wanted me to drive to the woods so they could kill me and take my car, after i outsmarted them u know what they said? “youz cool fo a white boy” That was only 1 time out of 5 that my life was affected by violent crime. Guess how many times out of those 5 it involved black males? EVERYTIME!
Thank God i was created to be of higher IQ than the black thugs, or i wouldnt be here right now.
Theres NO way anyone can tell me alot of blacks arent more racist than whites!
How about all the rapes of whites in prison by blacks every year?? Is that not racial? How many blacks can talk about how “white” violent crime has affected them personally?
Id guess a black is probably 1000 times more likely to get killed by another low IQ black than a “racist white”.
I say steralize every prisoner thats convicted of a violent crime. That way they cant go back out into the community and spread more fatherless kids and future thugs!
The TRUTH hurts huh you liberals with your heads in the sand!
And Muslim/Black immigration IS a BIG problem in Europe! Just look at how their violent crime stats have skyrocketed. The EUs immigration policy is truly killing Europe.

It WASN’T a discussion at all, Leftie! Obama tried to shove it down our throats in 3 weeks! What kind of serious debate takes place in 3 weeks!?!?! Don’t expect to try to slide one passed us and not ruffle a few feathers.

Maybe not anywhere but the entire Southeast (Louisiana over to Georgia) is AWFUL! The least racist place I have ever been, somewhat surprisingly, was the actual city of Dallas, TX and the entire state of New Mexico.

The racism in this country is on dull display on the left. Anyone remember Rev. Wright? Anyone remember the Skip Gates incident?
