Just got off the phone a few minutes ago with U.S. Rep. David Scott of metro Atlanta, who underlined what he said are some worrisome racial undertones in the current health care debate.
As noted this morning, Scott was the topic of a WXIA TV report over the weekend, which detailed an Aug. 1 confrontation with opponents of health care reform at a town hall meeting in Douglasville.
Scott angrily accused protestors of attempting to “hijack” the meeting.
On Monday, the congressman said he stood by those comments, which were recorded by the city’s cable TV outlet — then truncated into the WXIA report.
The edited video hit the airwaves only this weekend, but in fact was one of the first of many such clashes over health care reported around the country.
U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Decatur) will host a town hall meeting on health care this evening. His staff says 20 law enforcement officers will be on hand to maintain order.
What the WXIA report failed to capture, the 13th District congressman said, was the fact that the health care protestors intruded on a delicate, local discussion.
“That was not my town hall meeting. It was the city of Douglasville. They had worked months to put a town hall meeting together, for me to come and to explain and to give comfort and assurance [to] the community that would be impacted,” Scott said.
The topic was the $70 million reconstruction of Ga. 92 in the community. Sixty-eight homes and businesses will be destroyed in the process.
“It would go right through the heart of the African-American community,” Scott said. “These people don’t know — they’re willing to try to trust here, but they want some comfort. They want to know how their homes will be appraised. How will the neighborhood be impacted? The whole future of Douglasville rests on this road. That’s what that meeting was about. It was not about health care.”
Scott said it was the fact that the meeting wasn’t his, and dealt with a sensitive topic, that made him use the sharp tone.
“I was going to stand up and get the respect of the constituents of mine that had worked hard to put a meeting together. And I was not going to let [health care protestors] hijack this meeting. We were discussing the life-and-death issues of their future and their homes and their way of life,” Scott said. “It was very disrespectful and selfish. I had to speak up for the respect of the people of Douglasville.”
Scott said he’ll be the sponsor of a health fair in Jonesboro on Saturday. “I’m willing to take questions. But that’s mine. This meeting was not mine,” Scott said.
City Manager William Osborne, who moderated the Douglasville event, confirmed that health care protestors had to be called to order “four or five times” during a meeting that lasted nearly four hours.
The city manager said the demonstrators weren’t a surprise — Herman Cain, the WSB Radio talk show host and former Republican candidate for senator, had urged those opposed to current health care proposals to show up.
But Osborne also disputed descriptions of Scott as “ranting.”
“He was angry and he showed that anger. But he was totally under control,” Osborne said.
Scott said he understands why he was the target of confrontation. As the only member of Congress who is a member of the Blue Dog and New Democrat caucuses, plus the Congressional Black Caucus, Scott says he has begun to fill the role of go-between on the health care issue.
“I think members of Congress have to stand firm, and they have to be able to realize that we’re in a fight — that this is a serious issue, it is a deliberative issue. But we’re being hanged in effigy,” he said.
Scott said he has no problem with protestors exercising their freedom of speech.
“This is a different thing here. We’re dealing a concerted effort to use these town hall meetings to bum rush Democratic congressmen about this issue,” Scott said.
While Scott acknowledged the legitimate concerns that many Americans have when it comes to overhauling health care, the congressman also expressed worry about the debate’s undertone. Scott e-mailed me a sampling of some of the rougher health care mail he’s received — the ones with variations of the n-word.
“You were, you are, and you shall forever be but a ———-,” one fax to his office reads. The missive includes a mug of President Barack Obama with a hammer-and-sickle stamped on his forehead.
“The folks are not going to stand for socialized medicine even though most Negroes refuse to stand on their own two feet,” says another.
“These people are bringing [in] race — and ‘Negro’ and ‘colored’ and Obama,” Scott said. “We should applaud the fact that we have an African-American president and he is working on this. This is a great thing. But it should not be a racial situation. What have we done except look at the problem and move on it?”

Just because I am against the health care plan doesn’t mean I am racist. I find it misleading that pro-obamacare supporters pick the worst sound bites and excerpts to try to paint all those that oppose their reform as racist. According to the Dr that asked about the obamacare proposal, he had tried to get in touch with Scott about it but Scott refused to meet with him. Scott is a liar that abuses his power to attack the people he should be working for. Vote him OUT!

Unfortunately, the rise of racial vitriol against an African American who refuses to vote the way a mob wishes him to vote is neither surprising nor particularly newsworthy.

Another smoke screen designed to obscure truth and freedom of speech by concerned citizens. Shame on this “servant of the People” — do any of Speaker Pelosi’s sheep know what that means now-a-days? Both Dems and Reps can smell the rotten fish they are trying to sell us. So, stop already! Enough! Answer the people’s questions, and don’t keep using those tired talking points no one believes, anyway. Show “the People” some respect. Answer our questions.

Rev, I wasn’t aware one person (the Dr. that asked the question) or the majority of Americans (who oppose Obamacare) was a mob. It is downright sad that anyone would resort to racist claims but its a two way street, unfortunately. Either way, Scott was a jerk to that man who asked a question the only way he could get Scott to acknowledge his concern. I am also pretty confident that he wouldn’t have reacted that way if it was a black man that had asked the question but I do not know that for sure. Scott needs to go.

Why do liberals always play the race card when they are losing? No one has brought race into this, except the democrats. Vote this socialiust out of office. Throw them all out in 2010 and the rest, including Obama, in 2012. Obama…what a disappointment. Now we need to pray for “change.”

I wish I lived in his district, because I would vote him out. He treated a constitutent horribly, and one that was respectful to him and the group. He should be ashamed. And it has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with regular Americans getting sick and tired of their representatives not working for them, not listening to them and not even reading the freaking bills. It is a disgrace. Vote them, out and Hank Johnson, you are my rep, and if you don’t treat your meeting attendees better tonight, you will find yourself in trouble too. Do not support a single payor system or government run healthcare.

The Health care debate is important. But there are other issues that are important too. If my house was going to be taken out by a highway project, I’d want some answers! And there are answers needed with health care – but that doesn’t mean that the ones who shout the loudest win the day. If that is the case then we are lost – in more ways than one.

Yet again, the south has risen an is showing its TRUE colors. The congressman was asked a question about HEALTHCARE at a meeting to that was to discuss the topic of a $70 million reconstruction of Ga. 92 in the community. Sixty-eight homes and businesses will be destroyed in the process. Homes that just happen to be in a predominantly African-American community. So its OK to distract, divide, and abuse the democratic process when its AFRICAN-AMERICAN HOMES at risk…. just as long as the GOP gets it’s point across…which is what again????? Oh yeah that’s right… stop people from getting health care.

DO NOT PUT US (any of us) UNDER SLAVERY. This Helath Care plan and the Cap and Trade plan will destroy this nation. We just need Congress to cut taxes and get out of the way and we will be just fine.

The democrats have made it clear that they are passing this through without republican support or negotiation. The citizens have no choice but to stand up and say what they believe and since the democrats have said they are not going to be listening, people are having to say it even louder. Every thing the democrats are accusing the republicans of, they are the ones who are actually doing it. I am so glad America has woken up, even if it was after the election. “The war’s on,” says Rep. Baron Hill, D-Ind., and he’s not talking about a conflict overseas. The battle over health care is in his own backyard, where thousands of people are trying to tell him what to do, some not so nicely.
Hill is a leader of the Blue Dogs, a caucus of 51 conservative Democrats whose hard-bargaining support is critical to President Barack Obama’s bid to overhaul the health-care system.
“I’m trying to control the event,” Hill said, shortly before an informal discussion with a dozen business people at the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce. “What I don’t want to do is create an opportunity for the people who are political terrorists to blow up the meeting and not try to answer thoughtful questions.”
That decision irritates some of Hill’s constituents, who have been calling his office to demand time. They are furious that he voted July 31 in the House Energy and Commerce Committee for a hefty bill that would include a government-run insurance option.

To Margaret, TLG, What et al? What are your ideas on reforming health care? Here are a few of mine. Note this is primarily health care reform, not Health Care INSURANCE reform. Any reform effort must aggressively attack these issues below to lower the costs for everybody.
A few tenets that I value above all:
1. Prevention. This is the key. The leading causes of death/health issues are all lifestyle related.(Heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetic related illnesses, and accidents.).
2. Personal responsibility. An insurance company should be able to adjusts its rates based on a person’s health risks. Some health issues are hereditary of course and should be exempt. But if I smoke, am overweight, etc and refuse to change, I should have a higher premium.
3. Public option(limited). This is not a government takeover! A public option can be simply where the government subsidizes the payments, just like an employer does for its employees. Like your employer, the government writes a Summary Plan description of the coverage and benefits. Then (like your employer) it steps ‘out of the picture’ and pays an administrator(like NGS, Blue Cross, etc) to handle the claims and collect the premiums.
I know have I simplified this(in less than 1000 pages!) but this is the kind of reform I can support. Please share your ideas. Name calling, race baiting, etc will get us nowhere.

If this meeting was primarily about Ga 92 & the homes/business’s that will be destroyed then I agree, maybe that was’nt the time or place for questions in regards to Health Care. I don’t agree that it was about race(typical & easy retort). Also given the importance of the Health Care issue I think Scott was naive to think it would’nt be brought up. People want answers, and are’nt getting them. So as elected official you can’t pick and choose what you want to talk about without some type of fall out.Obama has used the tactic of grass root organizing for over a decade, and I have’nt heard one negative response from the left. Rep. Scott sees a lot of things that never happened. A few years back he spoke at my kid’s high school and told them a story where immediately after the Civil War President Lincoln met with Robert E. Lee at the White House rose garden where they discussed the reconstruction of the country and how they would both work toward the rebuilding of our country. He presented this as fact, unfortunately my teenage son knew that this along with a lot of what Rep. Scott had to say was totally bogus. The meeting he described never happened, and I’m equally sure he’s wrong about the reason’s behind the uprising against the Dem’s healthcare plan.

It’s really unfortunate nowadays that you can identify what posts come from the right by the name calling. A few Democrats lose their tempers, and it’s such a shock, but when hundreds of their own not only seem to lose their tempers, but never seem to have known where they were in the first place, it’s just them speaking their peace. Well their version of speaking their peace seems to be about preventing others from doing the same. Well, why? Because they’re objections are so rationally laid out that they fear not having control of the debate?
I’ll tell you what’s really happening. For years, people like themselves had their way, and they could rest secure in the knowledge that they had control. Now they don’t, and unfortunately, many take seriously all the negative, silly things people said about Democrats the last twenty years- silly things that imply that Democrats are these monstrous, amoral, powermongerers.
I think Republicans ought to wake up and realize that they have a lot less to fear than they thought, and the only reason why folks are riling them up, is that they want power back that they haven’t earned the restoration of.

Our health care system, which now only leaves a mere 50 million people without coverage, is wonderful. Clearly the envy of the world. Why should we change it, just because a bunch of liberal, socialist, communist idiots think it shouldn’t send you into bankruptcy when you get sick. People who can’t afford their own health care probably aren’t worth keeping around anyhow. Send them to Canada or Britain or France, or perhaps, better yet, let them expire.

Well, it didn’t take Scott long to play the race card in an attempt to divert attention away from his incredibly revealing rant at his constituent. Obviously, he read the White House talking points on responding to domestic “terrorists” who oppose nationalized health care. Unfortunately, he made a fool of himself and insulted a big percentage of his constituents who now understand they don’t have a representative in the House because they don’t look or think like him. Scott is a slave on the Democrat plantation and Pelosi-Reid, et al, have him just where they want him. I feel sorry for Scott. He was my representative before redistricting and I had no idea he was such a loser. Where was all this outrage when the Republicans were in control of our finances. They lied to us. Committed our children to wars that were being fault to pad the pockets of political cronies. They allowed the rich wall street insiders to get super rich to the detriment of ordinary Americans. They allowed the bankers and developers to get richer by financing homes to those who could not afford them in the first place. This is very evident around our Douglasvill community. Where is the outrage? Check your records and you will see the the presidents of most of the banks in Douglas County are Republicans. I am not totally satisfied with Rep. That picture is that our Country is crumbling at the heals of run away health care cost. This problem does not just affect African Americans, it affects the majority of our society. We were blinded once by the Rupublicans who clouded our thinking by interposing religous belief with political decisions. I think he makes a good point about the meeting not being his. I know that if I lived in Douglasville, I sure as heck wouldn’t want people asking about healthcare when a road is about to be built where my house now stands.
As far as him “playing the race card”, are you suggesting that people don’t send him those faxes and messages that were mentioned?

I find it amazing that Cong. Scott has seemed to forgotten that Mr. Osborne addressed the audience and announced there would be questions from those who were in attendance for other than the Hwy 92 project.
Yet, he accused those of us who would dare question his thoughts on governement healthcare of “Hijacking” the meeting???
He loudly stated, “If you want a meeting, call my office”! When he was told Isaac (his aide from the Smyrna office) had been called twice the day before, it looked like Isaac wanted to charge the person who would dare call him out!
This is yet another example of true arrogance and elitism at its finest.

Douglasville resident, you have not a clue. The housing crisis started when democrats like Barney Frank forced banks through legislation to give loans to people who were not credit worthy of said loans. Research the community reinvestment act, CRA, and you might learn something for a change. Democrats are socialists that do not respect the US constitution. Govt. programs such as welfare, social security etc violate the constitution and fail to promote personal responsibility.

Stop the “physician networks;” allow doctors to have an open market. Stop the “pre-certs! They waste time, money, energy. A doctor and patient can decide what’s needed, NOT the insurance companies.

The interview with the “protester” has valid points. He tried to call the man, tried to get answers, but the answer were all no.
He finally went to a place where he could ask questions after being denied the usual “respectable” channels.
Like most other politicos, the man probably can’t (or won’t) answer the questions and cannot afford to be embarrassed in front of his congregation. Sometimes the speakers just walk out when asked tough questions. At least this guy stayed in there.

Sharica, I agree with some of what you said, “Ignorance Still come in all shape, sizes and colors” but I have to say all I hear is how Bush sent us to war, when actually CONGRESS sent us to war with an almost 100% support of the Democrats. Also, from the points or highlights of the healthcare reform bill, there are many points that should make everyone want to stop and say wait a minute, for example the formation of a federal board that is to review claims and determine if they think the expense is allowable, not your doctor that recomended it. there are more points but we are limited. This type of healthcare is in Canada and alot of Canadians come to the US to get medical care. Last thing, I see that because I disagree with your views, I may be one of those “right-wing cowards” so maybe we should refer to the last line of your comment!

Hey ummm….Ryan – the right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness isn’t in the Constitution – that’s the Declaration of Independence – which carries zero legal weight in this country.
Constitution says that the gov’ts job is to
1. provide for the common defense
2. promote the general welfare
3. establish justice
4. promote domestic tranquility
5. and secure the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity (i.e. future generations)
Healthcare can be interpreted to fit under several of these – as can the argument against.
I think this rep’s frustration isn’t the protesting – it’s the venue. He’s trying to meet with a group of constituents about a separate issue that impacts them. They probably got nothing accomplished because a bunch of folks shouted and screamed during a meeting about housing. He’s holding a meeting about healthcare at another date – yell at him then. Basically they used their first amendment rights to deny the first amendment rights to another group. The right to swing your fist ends where the other man’s face begins the old saying goes.
I don’t want a single payer system either – however I’ve read a good deal of several of the bills floating around and none of them mandate a single payer system. It basically will create a gov’t run company like Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac – that people who are in between jobs or don’t get coverage through their employer can buy, just like people aren’t forced to get their mortgages from Fannie & Freddie (and thank goodness) So a lot of this anti single payer system anger is I think inherently correct but doesn’t apply to what’s being tossed about.
What members of the right can do (and I will fully support) is try to come up with something. The majority of Americans want some type of reform because our costs are spiraling out of control and contrary to what ray said, our healthcare system is pretty junky – we rank around 35th internationally if I recall. I would like to see a Republican come forward with a plan that will help rein in costs and increase coverage. I certainly don’t want government running the healthcare after their record with schools & financial institutions. I guess my point is this:
Some type of healthcare reform is going to happen. It’s not an oppressive corrupt gov’t trying to control you – it’s what a majority of Americans want and voted for. It stinks being in the minority on an opinion but you’re options are 1) yell and scream – which gets you nowhere. How successful were all those anti-war protesters? 2) Get Republicans in Congress to generate a plan that will help our system. If you come up with a good plan and can get support behind that plan (from more than 30% of the electorate) then two things can happen – your plan passes, or the dems face backlash in the elections for shunning a popular plan. The way the right is going now they aren’t going to gain anything from this – because pitching a temper tantrum doesn’t get you (or your kids) what you want.

Health Care reform is not about “Health Care” it’s about a power grab, we the people elect the representatives from our districts to serve the People, and look out for the “Overall Health of this Nation”. And up to this point for both the Democrats and the Republicans well it has a been a pathetic game of “Me and My” at the expense of the taxpayers.
Mr. Scott the illusionary Health care debate (it appears that the Dems have already counted the votes) is not about race and to think anything else is a further insult to this insidious issue of “Healthcare reform” I work over 40 hours a week I have decided to participate in employee sponsored health plans for most of my adult working life and have paid for it and my respected portion thereof; Now let’s see we have Medicare, medicade, peach care, the prescription drug program and I’m sure several more government health programs to mention, so why is it that the “Tax Payers” who pay for your health care don’t even get to decide if they can get some of the benefits of the congressional or senatorial, or executive branch health care plan? Oh let me guess let the people that pay the taxes be labeled as mobs and racist and out of control. This just doesn’t add up and you’re using our money to propose this garbage. No there isn’t a healthcare bill right now. There are about 60 ideas and proposals floating around through through various committees in both houses of Congress. So nobody has read an entire bill because there isn’t an entire bill. The house is working on combing all of their committees’ work and the Senate is doing this same. There won’t be a final “bill” that one could sit down and read for quite some time considering how slowly this is moving through Congress.

Conservatives did not support President Bush on everything that he did while in office. And, when liberals spoke out against the policies of Bush, they were not referred to as angry mobs. Kayne West called President Bush a racist after hurricane Katrina. I was not impressed with the way that disaster was handled, but I do not believe it was because the president was racist. Obama is attempting to change the fabric of America by introducing Socialism. If people do not stand against that, it’s agreeing by default. This country is great enough to stand for. Soldiers have been fighting for our freedom since the country was founded. To turn total control over to the government now without saying anything would be un American. The only program the government has ever effectively run is the military. I do believe the health care system needs to be reformed, and hope Obama can accomplish that without a ‘Government run option.’ It is clear that this is entirely about race to you. Obama wouldn’t have won the election without white people voting for him, that is a very weak argument on your part. The healthcare reform that he wants passed immediately is not going to begin until 2013, he is in a hurry to do this because Congress will change dramatically in 2010 and he probably won’t be a 2nd term president with the changes he’s making. All I want is for him to consider ‘All’ of America and do what’s in the best interest as opposed to pushing and agenda through so quickly out of fear.

What POTUS has asked for and will continue to ask for is for civil debate on this issue and if you haven’t read the news lately, showing up and shouting typically doesnt classify as having a serious debate…
As of now over 17% of our GDP goes toward healthcare, healthcare costs continue to rise and its time we do something about it. Saying you dont want socialized medicine like the UK (9% of their GDP) but you are in favor of Medicare is hypocrisy at its best.
I work full-time, exercise regularly, eat right and take care of my body. I am for a Government Option for healthcare because it makes sense! By allowing competition will lower costs. UPS and FED Ex continue to make money despite the US Postal Service. The insurance companies will then be forced to compete. Its time the AJC and other mainstream media stop sensationalizing the issues and offer the facts for people in a very real and common sense format.
I fall on the side of why do we need the insurance companies? If their goal is to make a profit by collecting more in premiums and paying out less in claims, how cany anyone justify that we are getting the best care as a nation based on this business model. Far right confederate flag wavers are amazing. They use the N word which is about the only word they know and it is misspelled, they are anti education because it is depleting their ranks, they are religious until love is involved, and they are the number one reason health care is in the tank in the first place. Look at even the Republican leadership, not too many missed meals there, they are mostly walking time bombs waiting for the heart attack, the dibetes, cancer from smoking. Instead of following their favorite hate group around the country why don’t they go out and get some exercise, stop packing the fried chicken and sweet tea, Bill Bennett on CNN keeps a drumstick under his desk on the air. Where were you guys when the Bush administration started stripping away all of your individual rights under the Patriot Act? Where are you pro-equality/individual liberty guys when people who looked Middle Eastern or had different names are being unjustly searched, seized, and detained? Why aren’t you guys protesting the tax breaks and incentives corporations receive from you (hard working American taxpayers) to export jobs and production facilities overseas? You think your taxes are going to increase because of healthcare reform? What effects will the Iraq War have on your future taxes? What effect will our broken energy policies have on your future taxes? What effect will having fewer and fewer jobs supporting a growing number of retirees have on your taxes? The problem I have with your argument regarding healthcare reform is that it is not consistent with your tolerance/acceptance/silence on all of these other issues that will “raise your taxes, limit your choices, and take aways your freedom.” That is why your rage over healthcare reform rings hollow and is without substance.

You can pay your mortgage with a 40% decrease in pay, but could you pay it with a 100% cut in pay? Someone being laid off from their job isn’t their fault. Do you have 18 months savings in the bank in case of job loss, medical emergency? Those who lost their homes because they bought a big house with no savings, I have no love for them. However, there are others who’ve done everything the right way and still suffer. Ignoring them to make you point doesn’t negate the fact that they still exist.

Is ti raqcisim, that typically it is blacks looking for the free handouts? they are the receipents of most welfare benefits, lead the country in unwed children, number of men in prison. The blame lies on the black communities lack of character, and ethics.

You anti-healthcare zealots don’t even know what you are fighting for.
Your healthcare dollars are already taxed: Just for kicks and giggles the next time you visit a hospital or ER request an itemized bill. What you are charged for certain things will shock you. More than likely one aspirin is $3, the supplies they use to treat you are probably marked up 30 to 50%…why? to pay for the person with no insurance who the hospital has to treat whether they can pay or not. What is that if not a tax?
Your care is already rationed: Ever hear of HMO’s/Insurance companies denying a person a required test or procedure because they don’t deem it “medically necessary”. What is that if not rationed healthcare?
Oh by the way Obama’s plan contains NONE of the things above. The current plan wants to do away with BOTH practices.
Yet you fight against a plan designed to ALLEVIATE the burden you currently bear because of your blind allegiance to a party or an ideal that doesn’t have your own best interest at heart. Have fun hurting yourselves and others less fortunate than you, you lemmings. Just don’t say you were none the wiser

I was not at the meeting that was called in douglasville but from the images on television and reading the newspaper, it sounded like a fight at the ok corral. We as Americans, citizens of Georgia and in particular residents of this fine community need to be concern about how the government can come into a community and take these homes without paying fair market value. That is what the real up roar should be about. As for the health care issue maybe we need to stop and look at some of the players in this shell game of reform such as the hospitals, drugmakers, health insurance and various other health related industries that stand to loss billions and possible trillions of dollar from this reform. Less not forgot the republican party that want health care reform to fail so they can gain sits in congress in the 2010 election or behind all this chaos and confusion going on around this great land of ours. President Obama and the rest of the democratic party is at least attempting to reform the health care system as it is today, no maybe the government hand should not be involved in health care but I do applaud the effort, because for 8 long years the republican party did nothing for the people. Also remember this, throughout all this chaos and confusion people like Rush, Sean, O’Reilly and many other neoconservative have health insurance coverage. No I am not a democratic, republican, liberal, conservative but I am a god fearing american that love this land we call the United States. I hate when my black and white neighbors make this into a racial issue, when the issue that divides us is the one thing that will benefit all of us and that is health care reform. So people of Douglevillle, residents of Georgia and citizen of America we need some type of health care reform done today and not tomorrow. The time is now.

IT IS NOT A RACIAL ISSUE—-AAAGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
Follow me here. My health insurance company plan CANNOT SURVIVE AS A BUSINESS by charging the same to the sick and elderly as they do to the young and healthy. If you have trouble with this concept, think about car insurance and if all drivers paid they same rates regardless of there record.
Within 5 years, employers can only offer plans where the insuror is barred from charging sick or elderly people more than healthy ones.
Within ESISA based plans, these will be mandated to do the same thing. There will be nothing stopping me from taking the cheap, public option when I can young and healthy and then switching to the private option when I become seriously ill. You see, they won’t be able to charge me more and this will put them out of business!
THAT WILL LEAVE ONLY THE PUBLIC OPTION, SEE? And under the public option, I do not choose my primary care provider. THIS IS THE PROBLEM.

Nobody’s read the healthcare bill? Then how does Sarah Palin know that Obama wants to shoot her ‘tard baby in the head if nobody’s read the bill? How do Republicans know that Obama wants to euthanize their grandmas if nobody’s read the bill? How to right-wingers know for sure that the public option will make private options evaportate if nobody’s read the bill? How does anybody know that “this will take away our freedoms and destroy America!!!” if nobody’s read the healthcare bill?
Oh, I forgot. Right-wingers don’t need facts to have opinions.
And by the way, if you think private insurance companies will go away if people have a public option, then you’re admitting that private insurance companies only exist to profit the shareholders, and aren’t actually for the express purpose of providing healthcare. So you kind of admit that the private sector, by definition, only exists to profit the already wealthy, and that if we want, as a nation, to accomplish something, it’s sheer foolishness to give the task to a bunch of greedheads and tell ourselves that “the free market will solve all our problems!”, isn’t it?

I wish the people who support this healthcare takeover would look closely at how that’s working out in most countries that already have it in place. The answer? NOT VERY WELL! Our current healthcare system isn’t perfect, but it is already the best in the world. The vast majority of people have access to healthcare, and most of those are reasonably satisfied with what they have. There are ways to make healthcare better (promote more competition!), but handing it over to our bloated, inefficient federal government isn’t a good idea.
I think it’s obscene when politicians call those who are protesting “un-American,” or make the assumption that those protesters are racists. Our founding fathers did A LOT of protesting when they saw freedom getting trampled, and personal freedom is a good thing for all Americans, regardless of race.

You can always tell what side of the political fence the response originates. One side discusses the question posed and states a fact/opinion. The other side does: 1) Tries to change the subject or 2) Challenges the source of the facts or 3) Blames it on someone else or 4) Throws in the race card. Facts 1: Everyone can get health CARE in America, not everyone has health INSURANCE. Walk into any hospital emergency room and they will treat you. Fact 2: Yes, there may be 50M people in America that do not have health INSURANCE. Included in that number are those that CHOOSE not to buy insurance (healthy young people, older folks eligible for Medicare/Medicaid that CHOOSE not to enroll in the plan because of the income/care limitations). Also included in the number are NON-AMERICAN citizens inside the borders, illegal aliens, approx 8-12 million. Spin meisters try to gloss over the FACT that the illegals are counted in the 40-50M. The remining group, 8-10M are the real folks that need some options for greater health care beyond the emergency room visits. That is the root of the uninsured problem and there are many solutions beyond a $1.6Trillion complete dismanteling of the current system.

You end up providing a few million people with “subsidized” healthcare (or healthcare that you and I provide as a freebie to those who can’t “afford” it, assuming healthcare is a right, which it is NOT)at the risk of DRASTICALLY reducing the quality and availability of good healthcare of an entire nation. The bottom line is that healthcare IS NOT A RIGHT and should not be placed on the backs of the taxpayers. Records reviewed by the AP show that since he took office in 2003, the two-term Republican has taken trips on state aircraft to locations of his children’s sporting events, hair and dentist appointments, political party gatherings and a birthday party for a campaign donor.

FACT : A government entity, by any definition is NOT a business and has no motive, desire or mandate to make a profit. Examples include the post office and Amtrak, both are subsidized by the taxpayers when they fall short. FACT, a public option to ‘compete with the insurance companies to keep them honest’, is not a level playing field. A ‘public option’, backed by the government debt/print money capability, has no incentive to even break even. It has the power and ability to dictate prices below cost, thus driving profit driven companies out of the market. FACT : A business that uses one source of income (profits from monopolistic business units) to allow expansion into new markets at below cost price points with the sole purpose to eliminate the competion, IS ILLEGAL according to SEC/DOJ rulings. And the government public option plan is different how?

Yes, John Clavis, private companies maximize profit to shareholders. Why wouldn’ they? Profits drive competion and competion drives efficiencies that the government (as I see it) doesn’t give a hoot about. The system is flawed but this isn’t the solution. I am concerned that I won’t have the choice that I have now. And, if you read the bill, you should be concerned, too.

FACT : Let’s say management of a company that makes bread, mandates that the employees pay into a retirement fund and took the money directly out of their paycheck. They take out more money than they giove out in benefits to build a reserve for the current workers that will retire in the future. Now if the management then decided to take that accumulated money to spend it on advertisements at football games, busines meetings, new equipment, bonus to themselves, etc and put attached an IOU of future earnings onto the acct, how long do you think it would take for this ILLEGAL act to be stopped and those responsible go to jail? FACT: Since 1983, the congress has manadated that every worker must pay into the social security fund more money than is currently being paid out in retirement benefits. (FYI_- I voted for Bush twice!) We have a President fighting for healthcare for all Americans and the right wing is publishing and pushing propaganda that it will destroy our nation. WAKE UP! African Americans are no longer the majority of minorities in the US. They are no longer the top beneficiary of federal aid, food stamps, etc. This is the south, so all the narrow minded racist can see is a black man attempting to help the poor (african americans). The Honorable Louis Farrakhan predicted while white America is focusing their hatred on black America, the Asians, Hispanics and other immigrants secure funding and gain political ground. Vote however you heart leads you to vote. Men, women and children of all colors, ages and creed died for that right. Visit some of the food pantries across the metro area and the faces you see are not all African Americans. Everyone is impacted by this recession. If you have the answer to the healthcare crisis, run for office and submit your proposal/law. It is real easy to stand on side line and pass judgment. Get in the race and lets see how quickly you line your middle class pockets.

I’m lost on how we are finding what Rep Scott said is racist. He simply pointed out that he was getting racist based letters for health care protest. And he is saying that race has no place in this debate. There is no race card being drawn here people. I feel like you guys did not read the same article I did.
Anyway, on the Health Care point. Just go read something. All this socialism talk is getting on my nerves. NO ONE in America wants socialism. NO ONE. So, lets all just draw out the points and counterpoints and have a reasonable debate about something. A reasonable educated debate. Its reasonable that someone would not want a certain provision in a bill because it would make their premium go up or down, or affect their coverage. It is unreasonable when people make an argument that the bill is out to kill old people, give minorities a free ride, and socialize our way of living. Those extremist views will never move us forward in any direction.
I hope sensible reasonable Georgians show up for these debates. We can’t afford not to.

What I am seeing more from the South is a level of ignorance and stupidity that makes me marvel. It’s amazing the foolishness that you people grab onto and shout as fact. Hannity, O’Reilly, Mark Levin and Limbaugh are jerking your heart strings because they know how gullible you fools are. You buy into their spin and stupidness because you don’t think for yourselves although you think you do. The day you guys stop being a profitable product for these guys, they’ll switch to the other side at a moment’s heartbeat. In the meantime, they know you guys are like sheep being led to slaughter.

I’m not surprised by this kind of hatred talk, regardless if you are a conservative, you can speak your peace without resorting to underlying and in your face racist jargon. It’s very sad that people don’t care about their fellow man, but being a resident of paulding county, I see this written in the blogs of Paulding county as well. You could care less about a road going through someone’s home unless it’s going through the wealthy area. LoL what a sad miserable bunch of people you are, spreading lies online without reading and trying to understand for yourselves. With so many seniors white and black being on medicare, what do you think that is? Something you’re entitled to? That’s a handout just the same. You don’t have to accept the gov sponsored insurance, you can keep your own, but let people decide for themselves without other’s resorting to scare tactics. See I’m a strong believer in KARMA, and what you give out you get back 10 fold! I hope you all settle down and actually ask questions, without resorting to screaming and threatening to get your point across. Sad Sad Truly Sad

Another reason why journalism and reporting are garbage in 2009. Now let me do Mr. Galloway a favor and report what really happened.
What we all saw on the news was a hack job of sound and video clipped together to make it appear to the slant that it was. The exchange we saw was from over an hour of this jacka%&s Dr. and others who kept interrupting a meeting that had nothing to do with health care! These people are trying to find out how, when, etc their homes would be demolished for this new road GA 92 and we got some fools interrupting every 5 minutes.
Excuse me but how would you like it if that was your house and you went to that meeting trying to find out the details of the planning for GA 92 and you got this fool interrupting the speaker for over an hour?
That Dr. is worried that he will no longer get payments from drug companies for giving patients prescriptions to the drugs that his buddy drug companies tell him to.
If I were there I would have bounced him out myself!
Scott should be commended for taking charge. Vote him out I think NOT!

The biggest evil ever practice in this country is beginning to rise to the top of the political heap. The pale faces of the previous administration essentially bankrupted this country. Now you have some more pale faces (the new nazis) are spreading fear among a group of people in this country who refuse to think for themselves. So now this group goes out and uses gestapo tactics at these town hall meetings to disrupt. Funny thing is if you or your family members use medicaid you are already using government health care, dummy. What is not surprising is the racial comments and overtones have started. Whenever pale faces are whipped into a frenzy, then those old racial feelings come out. Just look at most of the posts from this article. One things about it pale faces, this is not the 30s,40s,50s, or the 60s. Maybe what you folks have sowed for so long in this country is about to be reaped.

Please.
At least one fifth of our population has no regular access to health care, and we still spend nearly twice as much per person as any other developed nation. What do we get, outcomes that put us about 20th. Surely we can do better.
On the one hand, some republicans argue that we need to focus on cost rather than expanding coverage. Then, they suggest that a focus on cost would result in a “death council”.
This is not a choice between cost and coverage. We need to do both. They are not mutually exclusive.
Most of all, we need a civilized discussion about the issue. Ignore the fear mongers, and find out what is in the various healthcare bills. Then, let’s talk about solutions.
The townhall disruptors do not appear to be interested in voicing their opinions, only drowning out others. They remind me of nothing as much as a lynch mob.

What makes me disgusted is the fact that the congress, for that matter most elected officials, believe they have the right to call police in to “control” the very people they claim to represent. It should be illegal for any politician to call in the police because the members of their district, city, state or country wish to give them an ear full because of the ineptitude they stand by.

Funny how many want to bring up that we spend so much more on healthcare than any other developed nation yet we rank so low on the quality scale. Yet, some of these same folks don’t mind sitting back, even defending what a pathetic shame our public schools are. Race is not the issue here or is it Mr. Scott. It’s a tight rope and you all should be very careful. Remember, Mr. Obama never claimed to run on race. However, it is very funny to me that so many who staunchly support our president’s every move, would resort to “racist” name calling when someone has a differing point of view. Hard to have it both ways, don’t you think!!!!!!!! Again, this is no matter of race. It’s about the freedom-loving people wanting government to stay out of healthcare. The government ruins every other social program, no matter how well intended. If you don’t believe it, take a quick look at Medicare, Medicaid, the VA Health System, Social Security and many, many others. The government is very inept at running these well-intended programs. I, for one, will not sit quietly by and watch our government ruin what I believe to be the healthcare system that the rest of the world envies. Just ask any surgeon in south Florida how their business goes thru the roof during “snowbird” season with Canadian’s who come to them wanting ellective surgery.

Just think, I served in the military to protect the very rights that all those gutless, spineless politicians are trying to take away. On another note, the black mentality is amazing. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, is racial. Every time I have to ride through the “hood” all I see are black females walking around with 4 or 5 kids hanging on her and of course she’s pregnant…AGAIN. Then around noon, the males wake up and start selling their drugs and committing crimes. Those animals can’t even speak English. The black race is going down the toilet and it’s the white man’s fault. But, I have to hand it to them, they do stick together……when they arn’t killing each other. That’s the only thing I like about them….they kill each other about as fast as they breed.

Race has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with this issue. I will be in favor of the healthcare reform when I am afforded the IDENTICAL health care package the politicians have. They are trying to sell us a package of goods that they know absolutely nothing about because they have their own healthcare paid for by the government–and it sure doesn’t match in benefits to what they want us to have. Until such time, I am against the government getting involved. They have tried for how many years to solve the Social Security issue–another program to which they do NOT belong–and have never done diddly-squat. Why should we trust them to do this right? Name just ONE government program that is effective and fair. I guess if we allow them to sell us this new insurance program, women, including my wife will be led to Hooter’s for their annual breast exam because that is about what we will be able to afford. Enough about race; deal with the issue. WE DON’T WANT IT!

First, if you are an American (Black) call yourselves BLACK Americans, not AFRICA-FREAKIN’ Americans! This only shows that you hold your first allegiance to AFRICA and not to the country of your birth. By the way, I lived in Kenya for 3-1/2 years and I can tell you that black Africans identify with tribes as much (or more than) their country. AND, where else on earth or what other country has African-XXXXX’s? Only in America – that tolerates it.
Thank God not all idiot African-Americans(not) believe they are Africans first – a good many believe in this country and are proud of being called what they are: Americans.
Will the poisoning by African leaders (now there’s an oxymoron!) ever cease? Will they ever cease trying to victimize a black child from birth to grave? Will a black child who wants to excel in school ever be allowed to learn without “acting white?”

Protecting insurance and pharmaceutical companies that charge INSANE prices that the rest of the world doesn’t have to pay? The outrageous behavior of a few ruins the discourse for many at the meeting and now the outrageous use the blog to claim someone else is at fault. We complain about irrepesonsible behavior by children and youth bemoaning the weakening of family values and lack of respect of their elders. Yet some on this blog applaud confrontational tactics, name calling and slanderous speech. In our community where are the moral leaders who refuse to let the mob take over? The Congressman was a guest and the protesters made no friends for their position. For all those who wonder people of all colors, faiths and ethnicities need accessible healthcare and deserve fair treatmen. America’s success as a global leader and our economy depend on the contributions of all not just those who share race, faith and ethnicity. Reasonable people can have a civil disagreement without being disrespectful. The tactics of the “protesters” were selfish and disrespectful of all those good people who came to the meeting to be heard. Grow up and respect yourself by respecting others. That’s a good place to start if you care about the outcome rather than just showing how disruptive you can be.

Playing the race card and living the race issue are compltely different. Racism is live and well and its not all whites who are playing the up to race card. #1. If the meeting in Douglasville was truely to meet with those who will be impacted by the Hwy. 92 project, why weren’t the folks asked to prove their address and then eliminate everyone else?
#2. As David Scott’s constituents, we are ashamed of his behavior… shaking his finger at someone like a crabby old man yelling at the neighbor kids. How dignified is that for someone who is supposed to be representing the people??
#3. One issue which should get the attention of all those who can read: Black women have a greater chance of having breast cancer. If this bill is passed, there will be rationing and those women who have Medicaid, Medicare or whatever, they will not get the BEST CARE available, esp. those over 55. What about all the men with prostate cancer?
My husband has glaucoma and had laser surgery to halt the progress so he doesn’t go blind. With this plan, he would be denied treatment because he is too old…just go blind… and pay thousands for a caretaker.
Having worked in the health care industry I believe we need some changes but we don’t need a program run by the government. They can’t run anything. This is socialism. The program isn’t good enough for those in Congress and it isn’t good enough for the American people.
Vote Mr. Scott out!!

In 1997, I found myself working temporary after working for the Olympics. I became ill and was hospitalized for a little more than one week. I had two procedures–kidney stones. I racked up medical, hospital and doctor bills totally close to $30,000. I also, fell behind in my mortgage payments. I had to file bankruptcy. I paid back all of the money over a five year period. Those payments to my trustee totalled almost $600 a \month on top of keeping up my monthly payments to my mortgage company. I had no credit card payments. The only debt I had were those medical bills. I am a taxpayer and I want health care reform. Why should misinformed folks dictate whether someone should receive medical assistance. The protestors say they don’t want government in their business–that’s a joke. The government is already in their business if they are receiving social security, medicare, Veterans benefits, unemployment insurance, prescription plan, etc. I could go on and on. Half of the protestors are supporting a cause they have no understanding. The politicians that are protesting too much government–are the very ones that are receiving big fat checks from the insurance companies. No, I don’t want more government. However, we now have insurance companies dictating whether they will cover some things and not others or you can get this prescription not the one you really need. Why should the insurance companies dictate to my doctor what kind of treatment they will pay for and which ones they will not. It’s insane. Folks stop listening to the talk radio or whatever you’re listening to and pick up the plan and read it for yourself. I would have respect for someone that has taken the time to read the bill. There are more than five or six different variations of the health care plan and some haven’t even come out of committee. So, what are you talking about. I believe the protests are for the folks that didn’t get their choice for the POTUS. The members of Congress that have tried to get the facts to us have been targeted for no reason other than to shut down progress and all its about is the fat cat insurance companies have spent a great deal to pay people like Oxendine and others to stall any kind of reform to our health care. I can remember not to long ago–the Members of Congress that fought back privatizing Social Security are the same ones some of you old fools are shouting down at these town hall meetings. If Bush had his way with Social Security you would be jumping out of windows or going back to work like some of the Madoff victims. JUST READ THE PLANS FOR YOURSELF!

Nice try, Pat. You make some valid points, but the politicians working on this bill are not covered by this bill. I WANT JUST WHAT THEY HAVE! If it is good enough for them and it works, why not spread it right out for all of us? Why re-invent the wheel when they have a plan they like. They will not be affected one way or the other with what they are trying to push down our throats. Talk about streamlining the situation–it’s already in place and could be so easy.
Additionally, if that makes no sense, perhaps Social Security doesn’t either. They have been trying to solve that and they pay not the first cent into the program because they are on their own retirement program and not affected.
I don’t believe we need these yo-yos dictating what is best for us when they know nothing about it and have other privileges above and beyond those that put them in Washington.
Government taking over health insurance? Where will it end? They own the automobile companies now and now we have Cash for Clunkers where they pay the companies they own a huge stimulus. Hmmmm; sounds like government solving their problems with more money THAT WE HAVE TO PAY BACK. The deficit has loomed way out of control and the demise is near. It has to be paid back. We common taxpayers have to pay it back.
I don’t have the answer, but I don’t want government politicians telling me what I need in health insurance UNLESS they are on the same program. They wouldn’t be caught dead with this plan and we all know it, so why are we allowing it to happen? Write letters, call your representatives and don’t stop! They need to hear us.

CHRIS SAYS: An example of the typical Republican nonsense that is so prevalent. OK, Keith, so what about these situations:
1) You’re unemployed because you got laid off?
2) You work for a smaller business that doesn’t offer health insurance?
3) You are caring for an ailing relative (under 63) who doesn’t have health insurance?
4) You have your own health insurance policy and you, your family or your child get turned down for treatment for a pre-existing conditions (after paying about $3-4000/month)?
C’mon, Keith, what’s the solution? “Get a job somewhere that offers it”? And Republicans claim that they support small businesses??? LMAO. Well, that lie gets exposed here.
Here are a few facts for idiots like yourself: Look them up because, unlike your Republican ignorance, these are facts:
1) The US of A spends over $6,000 per man, woman and child on health care. That’s TWICE more than Canada, UK, France, Germany or any other industrialized country. Are we getting better care for spending more than anyone else?
2) Over 25,000 Americans die in this country for lack if Health insurance.
3) Over 50% of all personal bankruptcies are due to medical expenses. Who ends up footing the bill for this?
Oh, if you need some unbiased facts about the health care reform bill, check http://www.factcheck.org

Nancy Pelosi was right. It is so unAmerican to block free speech as these mobs have done. No matter how you frame it, the gentleman was unfair to Representative Scott. He had a right to be indignant. Anytime anyone stands up to them they yelp like a puppy with a tail. Now they protestors have abandoned the stars and stripes and favor their own DON’T TREAD ON ME FLAG that they pass out at rallies. Chris, the Republicans have several ideas that would help reform healthcare without government healthcare. The Democrats refuse to allow them to participate. Everything they have put forward is voted down by the dems and then the dems say that the Republicans don’t have any ideas and the press refuses to cover what the Republicans say, they just spout the Dem talking points.
Their is a bill that has gone through committee but not voted through the entire house yet. It talks public option, but Obama as well as Barney Frank and other Dems have said that this is the way to single payer healthcare. Our congressmen have not read the bill and admit that they don’t because they can’t understand it. Some have read it and admit that they don’t understand it. How on earth can you vote on such a sweeping bill like this and not understand what you are voting on?

I’m not from Atlanta but let me say this, the main people who are complaining about this offer no solutions to the problem just adding to it by going to meetings and disrupting them. You want your voices to be heard? How about listening first BEFORE offering up an opinion someone else gave you. The problem with a lot of this is most of the people complaining probably didn’t vote for Obama in the first place and probably haven’t read the bill themselves but because Rush, Sean or Sarah says it’s bad, then they agree with it not realizing as someone else has pointed out who was a conservative by the way that it’s Bluecross Blue Shield, Cobra and this other health care agencies who don’t want reform because quite frankly it creates competition among them and they will have to lower their rates. Why is that a bad thing? Why as a Americans do we continue to fight amongest ourselves for the few crumbs given to us and blame one another instead of turning our frustration on the people who deserve it the most and that is this big time companies who continue to screw us ALL over. This is truly amazing. How many of those who oppose Heathcare Reform actually voted for President Obama? I would venture to say “NONE.” You “sheep” or your collective term of “Real Americans,” of which is comprised primarily of southern, white Americans, have allowed yourselves to be manipulated by the very insurance companies that are fearful of a loss of profits (salaries, private clubs, and their vision of the status quo). You all have had a famaily member that has been subjected to the very industry that you blindly are defending. You scream from the talking points (o.k. let’s be honest here, most of you HAVE NOT read a talking point, however, the leader of your group has or is imitating another wingnut) that you do not want a beauracrat between you and your doctor. That’s laughable when the insurance company has a “consultant” that is clearly between you and your doctor and denies you much need treatment. But, you’re argument remains that it is not due our President’s race. Then let’s presume it’s not. The depictions of him with Hitler, or with a scicle and hammer, does that indicate Communist or Dictator? A leader of the Third Reich?? You’re stomping on the memory of our fallen soldiers when you do something like that? (You know WWII??), Or is it an attack on the Jewish? You suborn correspondence that is laced with racial ephitets and attacks on elected officials of color..why? What does any of their differing viewpoints have to do with their color? Healthcare effects each and every one of us. Black, White, Latino, and Asian. The Insurance industry does not give one iota of a damn that you’re either white or black or whatever. If that “consultant” denies your treatment, you are more prone to remain ill or worse die. That has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with our rights as citizens. I have insurance, Thank God, however, I know that my insurance can be better with a system that offers competiveness. It can only help our financial health while getting the treatments that we need to continue to be here for our loved ones. This craziness of supporting a party that is being manipulated by the very industry that has allowed the deaths of so many of our citizens and family members by denying coverage, dropping those who have either pre-existing conditions, or have received treatment for a chronic illness, and then for them to be denied coverage from other agencies is beyond the realm of stupid. I was at Rep. hank Johnson’s Healthcare Town Hall last evening in Clarkston. I saw the determination of several groups, those who supported the reform, those who opposed it, those wh were there for inforamtion, and those who had no intention of allowing that exchange. As my wife and I stood there, a member of Freedom Works was passing out a 3X5 card that summed up the complexity of a bill that could greatly enhance the lives of millions of Americans, and I thought, what have we as a country been reduced too? We are no better than those countries that are in constant turmoil. Yet they have healthcare. We tout to be the strongest country on Earth, yet we have been allowed to be dictated too by Big Business (Banks/Insurance Companies). We have turned on one another and are allowing the media to control the message by inciting our divisions to violent levels. What have we become? Yet, the very issue at the base of all of this is race and trust. President Barak Obama is a multiracial person. He represents many races in his being. He, essentially, can be the best of all of us. If we stop attacking one another. He can lead this country, if we stop allowing those that want to see US fail. And, we can get our country back from the special interests which are only interested in themselves. Is that what you’re demonstrating for? In the end, you’ll be in need of the very thing that you stand against. Death Panels? Beauracratic denials of coverage? Nazis? Now, N-word? Swatizkas? It’s mindless and its ugly. Stop it. Just stop it.

What these elected officals fail to remember is that they work for US. Congress is a cesspool of liars, thieves, inside traders, traitors, drunks (one who killed a staffer, yet is still revered), criminals, racists and other low level swine who, as individuals (not all, but many), will do anything to enhance their lives, fortunes and power, all at the expense of the People of the United States and its Constitution, in order to be continually re-elected.
All of your constituents have to right to free speach regardless of the the topic or forum. You failed to address the Doctor’s question, which was one that many in attendance wanted to hear your answer. If you creeps are going to cram MANDATORY HEALTH CARE down our throats, maybe the American people should be allowed to vote on it and not our corrupt Congress. Really, you think this is about race and a black man as President? Do you really think only blacks voted for Obama and put him in office? No, his platform of “hope and change” did that and a lot of whites voted for him as well. Well we are certainly getting the change, because all he and the democrats have done since getting into office is spend, spend, spend and have done it quickly, before anyone can say “wait a minute!”. What happened to “transparency”? what happened to letting the American people have access to these bills prior to them being voted on? What happened to looking forward, not backwards? Seems every time I hear our president speak he is reminding Americans that he didn’t make this mess, this is Bush and the Republicans mess — don’t blame me . . . . Really, that is what he calls “looking forward, not backwards”?
As usual, with politicians, they promise you the world and deliver exactly the opposite. It is our responsibility as citizens of these United States to speak up — why are those against Obamacare being called racists, and terriorists when we are just speaking out on what we believe? The democrats certainly spoke out when they didn’t agree with Bush and I don’t remember anyone calling them terrorists.
Yes, I am proud that we voted in a black president, but just because I don’t agree with him doesn’t mean I am a racist — I am so sick of hearing that card being played.

1. It sounds like there was only one person posting here who was at the townhall meeting with Congressman Scott.
fact: there was a table set up for those who wanted to speak on the Hwy 92 issue to sign up to do so.
fact: there was another table set up for those who wanted to speak on any other issue to sign up to do so.
fact: a ninety second limit was set for any comments.
fact: almost no one stayed within the ninety second limit set, and no one was stopped or even reminded of the limit when they were speaking on hwy 92. That is what caused those who wanted to address healthcare to get upset.
fact: twice during the meeting, someone spoke out of turn with a louder than necessary voice– not a yell
fact: twice during the meeting, Congressman Scott said he’d answer questions on other matters–just be patient.
fact: 35 people signed up to speak on hwy 92. When they finished, the floor was opened to anyone else who wanted to speak on hwy 92, before “other topics” were given any time. This APPEARED to be a stall to keep us from speaking.
fact : the first person to speak on healthcare was a black man, not the doctor. At that point, Cong. Scott got upset and the crowd suddenly wanted the 90 second limit on comments adhered to. he was interrupted when ninety seconds passed and the woman controlling the microphone took it from him (he resisted but gave it up).
fact. the doctor who spoke second started out peaceful, but adamant and, when he was interrupted by the crowd, he became a little less than cordial, but not rude.
fact: the rude problem started with the crowd, those who were apparently there for the hwy 92 project.
fact: although the meeting was interrupted twice, there were no problems. Those who interrupted stopped when Congressman Scott told them he’d answer their questions (twice).
Fact: Congressman Scott’s temper was aimed at healthcare bill opponents only, even though the problems began with the rest of the group.
fact: the meeting was billed for 2 hours and lasted over 3-1/2 hours.
fact: after the first half hour of questions (many of which were actually comments and “attaboys” from county politicians and officials and not questions) everything was simply repeats, worded slightly differently– everyone wanted to know about their particular house and how the new highway would affect them.
fact: Congressman Scott told the group he would be holding a healthcare townhall meeting in Austell on 28 august.
fact: cong. Scott appeared to have little intention of discussing healthcare
fact: I know these things because I was there. I was third in line to speak. The mike was pretty much taken out of my hand. I was quite irritated but I left it alone
opinion: Congressman Scott probably overreacted when he closed the meeting after two speakers on healthcare. There likely wouldn’t have been a problem had the hwy 92 group stayed out of it for the minuscule amount of time the healthcare speakers were afforded. There did not seem to be a racial element to the meeting; there did seem to be a bias against anyone who was not in support of the Healthcare bill, as they weren’t given consideration nor reasonable time, even though the vast majority of us adhered to the rules set.
It seems that, for a Congressman to hold a townhall meeting, and not expect to discuss the biggest issue alive, is very unrealistic. If you set up a meeting and establish a way for people to discuss a subject other than the main topic, you should expect other topics to be discussed.
Congressman Scott, whom I did vote for, lost considerable respect from me by his reaction to opposition to what he apparently planned to do about HR3200. Additionally, since the meeting, it looks like he has decided to not hold a healthcare meeting, which looks to me like he lied.
There were some things going on outside and I can’t speak to that, except to say it didn’t seem as friendly. But, as I said, that was outside the meeting room.

At what point in a black persons life is he taught to start screaming “race descrimination” when things look bad for his actions or position? It seems to be a trusty fall-back position for every black person. I am white and I have never accused a black person of being racially biased against me and there have been a few instances in my life when I was passed over because of my race. Some people feel differently than me about the role of government and it has nothing to do with skin color.
Now, realize that healthcare hits close to home for most people. In other words, it’s a big enough issue on its own without regard to race. If you’ll remember, Hillary Clinton’s efforts to reform healthcare were met with passionate opposition as well. It’s the willingness to blame everything on race that I find disgusting and I hope you’ll realize soon that the President really wouldn’t want you using it as an excuse anymore.

Racial/class/age overtones are unavoidable here as the government is basically reducing/eliminating coverage for the aged (people that at some point actually paid into the system) and extending coverage to the uninsured which include illegal aliens. Additionally, note that middle class white guys are losing their jobs at a rapid clip while new job creation is primarily centered in the federal government and these jobs are being filled disproportionately by non whites. Another Obama moment.

Did you know that more than 70% of all “birthers” in this country are located in the South? More than 50% of all Republicans “don’t know” where Obama was born. Yet, only 11% of the country “doesn’t know” where Obama was born.
Did you know that, after President Johnson passed the 1964 Civil Rights act, he claimed that he has lost the South for a generation?
Did you know that right after the 1964 civil rights act passed, Nixon, among other Republicans, devised the Southern Strategy?
The Southern Strategy had Southern Republicans play up racial divisions, and it worked very well. Using a “solid South” the Republicans were able to convince white voters that black people and other minorities wanted to rape and kill them. Also, that they were lazy, shiftless, criminals who couldn’t be trusted to do anything right.
President Johnson was wrong. He didn’t lose the South for a generation, he probably lost it for good.
Southerners will never accept a black man as President. Did you notice that right after the black guy won, all of these Southern States started threatening to secede? I thought that the South was patriotic? Is secession patriotic? (When a Black man is President, apparently, it is.)
All of which brings me to health care. White, Southern Republicans have absolutely no rational ground upon which to decry giving American citizens the option of participating in a health insurance program administered by the federal government. (Did you know that Medicare is a health insurance program administered by the federal government?)
So, what do they do instead of simply saying that they have no rational ground for opposition?
Lie? Check.
Distort? Check.
Intimidate? Check.
Threaten? Check.
Republicans argue that public money will be used for abortion. The Hyde Amendment, which is now more than two months old, says that it will not.
Republicans argue that we want to kill your grandmother. Really? I thought this kind of stuff was what four-year-olds would say.
What about Socialism! Saying that something is “socialist” does not address the relative merits or demerits of the proposed thing. Socialists have speed limits. Are speed limits socialist? We should abolish everything that a socialist might do? Insane. As well, if a federally run insurance program is “socialist” what is Medicare?
Speaking of Medicare, isn’t your grandmother on Medicare? Is the federal government currently trying to kill your grandmother?
What alternatives have Republicans proposed? None.
I hate to say this, but any objective look at the issue can lead to one conclusion. The Republican party is now a regional party. Unfortunately, we all reside in that region. They will never again control any of the three branches of government. Look at the numbers outside of the South. Obama is incredibly popular everywhere except with Southern Whites. Why? Oh, yeah. We already answered that question.
Republicans are on the wrong side of history. These changes are coming and they will form the cornerstone of the our future. In 20 years they’ll be no more controversial that Social Security (Socialism!) or Medicare or Medicaid.

Jason, you are ignorant (I was about to call you an idiot, but I actually can’t know that). You’ve likely never had to worry about other races, because you likelly never lived close to anyone who didn’t look like you. The south, we “ignernt sutherners” received other races and most of us learned to get along. It’s people like you who live without that experience that continue to make ignorant judgments about racial issues. We have bigots and we have racists, Just like you do, I’m sure. But just because someone of a minority didn’t get things their way doesn’t mean they are victims of racism.
My wife was born and raised in the north. She never even saw a black person until she was almost an adult.
Back in the early sixties, several black leaders called upon blacks to move to the five southern states (La, Al, Ms, Ga, and I believe SC.). They presumed that was the only way they’d ever get political power, and they were probably correct. The result was larger black populations in the south and people like you, the closet racists who want to continue to judge ignorantly, never have to find out just how ignorant they are. Ultimately cities like Atlanta, Birmingham, New Orleans, Montgomery, and numerous others are a majority or near majority black, good, bad or indifferent.
I’m sure you’re gonna tell everyone how you have black friends to assuage your own bigoted tendencies.

Notice how Obama rescued Gates but not the man African American knocked to the ground and assaulted by thugs from SEIU; or the doctor asking a simple innocent question. Scott came across as a racist. Whenever racism is discussed it’s projected that the whites are those that are racist; did it ever occur to anyone that Blacks are? Thank you Aaron! Last time I checked Obama was more latte than black or white. Why do black people see bi-racial individuals as black? Why the talk of race if he’s neither black nor white? And, if you agree, why was history made with this election?Media?.. Maybe someone can enlighten me.
Easy answer
August 11th, 2009
3:16 pm
Why do black people see bi-racial individuals as black?? Oh, that’s easy. Because someone had to accept the children of black female slaves who were “loved” by their masters. And it wasn’t the white family in the big house.
I’m sure you’ve heard of the “One-Drop Rule”. If not, please look it up. Here is a quote from Wikipedia:
The one-drop rule was a tactic in the U.S. South that codified and strengthened segregation and the disfranchisement of most blacks and many poor whites from 1890-1910. After Supreme Court decisions in Plessy v. Ferguson and related matters, White-dominated legislatures felt free to enact Jim Crow laws segregating Blacks in public places and accommodations, and passed other restrictive legislation. Legislatures sought to prevent interracial relationships to keep the white race “pure” long after slaveholders and overseers took advantage of enslaved women and produced the many mixed-race children….Madison Grant of New York in The Passing of the Great Race wrote: “The cross between a white man and an Indian is an Indian; the cross between a white man and a Negro is a Negro; the cross between a white man and a Hindu is a Hindu; and the cross between any of the three European races and a Jew is a Jew.”
So you see, this idea was something that started LONG ago by whites as a way to keep the white race pure. Does this help answer your question?

Barack Obama is our country’s first Bi-Racial president. Wonder what is taught in the schools during Black History month. If educated properly, students would be taught the following; In 1924, the DNC in NY hosted a large Klan’s group known as the Klanbake. Then in 1935 it wa the Democrats that defeated an anti-lynching bill put forth by the Republicans. Makes you wonder why the majority of African Americans vote Democrat. Walking along side of a party that is just using them for their votes. Sad, isn’t it?

The “mob” you are referring to, are voters and they have every right to want their elected officials to vote the way they would like for him to vote. As far as the racial tensions go, I don’t think the majority of people opposed to the proposed health care reform think in terms of black or white. Most people I know are just concerned that this is a step in the wrong direction for this country and would prefer to find a different route of reform. Personally, I think that we need more regulation, and the government should audit all denied claims in the insurance industry. Then we should offer a subsidy to all americans who are unable to purchase insurance, so that they can shop around and purchase what fits their needs most.

For all of the people saying that I’m a “moron” or “ignorant,” no one is responding to my argument. Attack the speaker, rather than the argument. For the record, that’s called ad hominem, and it’s a logical fallacy.
So, I guess no one really wants to talk about the racial aspects of people who oppose health care reform. I believe I put forward an argument that the South has a history of racism. People from the South are overwhelmingly anti-Obama. None of the arguments against health care reform have a basis in fact. So, it’s logical to deduce that the reason for white Southerners opposition to Obama’s policy is based upon race. Now whether that be because Obama is black, or the general feeling that some minority will benefit more than whites I can’t say.
Would anyone care to respond to my argument, without calling me names? I’d welcome the debate.

Actually, I think whoever did this is LABELING Scott and the Democrats as being Nazis. Afterall, the Nazis were a socialist political party – and implemented their socialist and conformist policies on its citizens who were too weakened by economic depression post WWI to stand up to them. Of course, there are better ways to go about drawing those parallels – other than vandalism that can be misconstrued as being racist. Plus it’s probably in response to Pelosi calling health care opponents Nazis – which once again proves Pelosi never really read a history book and is a complete ignoramus – her own party is the modern socialist movement and they’re acting like a cuddlier version of the Gestapo .

Democrats – with the help of their willing co-conspirators in the media – are the undisputed masters of diversionary tactics.
Instead of talking about the issue at hand – i.e., health care – they change the subject and give black people yet ANOTHER opportunity to blame all of their problems on somebody else.
The black community is plagued by irresponsible behavior that leads to amazingly high rates of out-of-wedlock births and STDs; deadbeat “fathers”; an abysmal high-school graduation rate; and rampant crime.
Despite all of those self-inflicted wounds, black people appear to believe that “Nazis” are the biggest threat to their pursuit of happiness. (I’m sure when they visit an ATM at night black folks are looking over both shoulders for members of the Hitler Youth.)
Of course, black people believe O.J., Ray Lewis, and Michael Vick were all innocent, and they believe that Michael Jackson was “normal”, so I guess in their bizarro world, anything’s possible.
Compared to the verbal abuse that George W. Bush endured for eight years, Obama is being treated with kid gloves, especially by liberal lackeys such as Jim Galloway.
If Obama isn’t man enough to take the heat, he should get out of the kitchen. At the very least, he should stop whining like a little punk every time somebody dares to question him and his socialist agenda.
As for Obama’s supporters, maybe if they had jobs and paid taxes they would understand why so many of us honest, hard-working Americans are upset with the President’s plan to re-distribute OUR MONEY to the dregs of society (aka the Democratic base).

You said Republicans have a history of racism in the South. The implication was that only Republicans have a history of racism in the South. And further implied that racism only exists in the South and only among white people.
And you were wrong.
Further, you have stated that there isn’t any logical reason one would be opposed to this healthcare plan. If you haven’t heard any rational objections, then I really don’t have time to educate you on the other point of view. For example, the bill would bar ERISA based plans from charging sick and elderly people more than young and healthy ones. You can think of this as kind of like a car insurance company charging the same rate to all drivers. Also, private plans will not be able to make changes after being grandfathered and will have to adopt the mandates after five years. There is very real concern that these companies will not be able to operate their plans profitably. What this means is they will have to go out of business. If my plan goes out of business because of government regulation, then I really don’t have the “choice” that the President says that I have. That has nothing at all to do with race or region as when you begin to invesitgate, you’ll see these arguments taking place all over the country.
I can only suggest that you read some publications that you feel present both sides logically. I’m done with you.

It is clear to anyone with a brain why a swastika was painted on his sign. He, along with Obama and the Chicago mob, will make America look like Hitler’s Germany before too long. What a woeful lack of intelligence must be in David Scott and his supporters to so easily reduce a real debate on a real issue affecting all American people to race! The bills in both houses require that Americans purchase insurance through “qualified” plans offered by health-care “exchanges” that would be set up in each state. The rub is that the plans can’t really compete based on what they offer. The reason: The federal government will impose a minimum list of benefits that each plan is required to offer.
David
August 11th, 2009
4:37 pm
As with the previous example, the Obama plan enshrines into federal law one of the worst features of state legislation: community rating. Eleven states, ranging from New York to Oregon, have some form of community rating. In its purest form, community rating requires that all patients pay the same rates for their level of coverage regardless of their age or medical condition.
Americans with pre-existing conditions need subsidies under any plan, but community rating is a dubious way to bring fairness to health care. The reason is twofold: First, it forces young people, who typically have lower incomes than older workers, to pay far more than their actual cost, and gives older workers, who can afford to pay more, a big discount. The state laws gouging the young are a major reason so many of them have joined the ranks of uninsured.
Under the Senate plan, insurers would be barred from charging any more than twice as much for one patient vs. any other patient with the same coverage. So if a 20-year-old who costs just $800 a year to insure is forced to pay $2,500, a 62-year-old who costs $7,500 would pay no more than $5,000.
Second, the bills would ban insurers from charging differing premiums based on the health of their customers. Again, that’s understandable for folks with diabetes or cancer. But the bills would bar rewarding people who pursue a healthy lifestyle of exercise or a cholesterol-conscious diet. That’s hardly a formula for lower costs. It’s as if car insurers had to charge the same rates to safe drivers as to chronic speeders with a history of accidents
David

This is the freedom that the President keeps emphasizing. Yet the bills appear to say otherwise. It’s worth diving into the weeds — the territory where most pundits and politicians don’t seem to have ventured.
The legislation divides the insured into two main groups, and those two groups are treated differently with respect to their current plans. The first are employees covered by the Employee Retirement Security Act of 1974. ERISA regulates companies that are self-insured, meaning they pay claims out of their cash flow, and don’t have real insurance. Those are the GEs (GE, Fortune 500) and Time Warners (TWX, Fortune 500) and most other big companies.
The House bill states that employees covered by ERISA plans are “grandfathered.” Under ERISA, the plans can do pretty much what they want — they’re exempt from standard packages and community rating and can reward employees for healthy lifestyles even in restrictive states.
But read on.
The bill gives ERISA employers a five-year grace period when they can keep offering plans free from the restrictions of the “qualified” policies offered on the exchanges. But after five years, they would have to offer only approved plans, with the myriad rules we’ve already discussed. So for Americans in large corporations, “keeping your own plan” has a strict deadline. In five years, like it or not, you’ll get dumped into the exchange. As we’ll see, it could happen a lot earlier.
The outlook is worse for the second group. It encompasses employees who aren’t under ERISA but get actual insurance either on their own or through small businesses. After the legislation passes, all insurers that offer a wide range of plans to these employees will be forced to offer only “qualified” plans to new customers, via the exchanges.
The employees who got their coverage before the law goes into effect can keep their plans, but once again, there’s a catch. If the plan changes in any way — by altering co-pays, deductibles, or even switching coverage for this or that drug — the employee must drop out and shop through the exchange. Since these plans generally change their policies every year, it’s likely that millions of employees will lose their plans in 12 months.

The Senate bill requires that Americans buying through the exchanges — and as we’ve seen, that will soon be most Americans — must get their care through something called “medical home.” Medical home is similar to an HMO. You’re assigned a primary care doctor, and the doctor controls your access to specialists. The primary care physicians will decide which services, like MRIs and other diagnostic scans, are best for you, and will decide when you really need to see a cardiologists or orthopedists.
Under the proposals, the gatekeepers would theoretically guide patients to tests and treatments that have proved most cost-effective. The danger is that doctors will be financially rewarded for denying care, as were HMO physicians more than a decade ago. It was consumer outrage over despotic gatekeepers that made the HMOs so unpopular, and killed what was billed as the solution to America’s health-care cost explosion.
The bills do not specifically rule out fee-for-service plans as options to be offered through the exchanges. But remember, those plans — if they exist — would be barred from charging sick or elderly patients more than young and healthy ones. So patients would be inclined to game the system, staying in the HMO while they’re healthy and switching to fee-for-service when they become seriously ill. “That would kill fee-for-service in a hurry,” says Goodman.
In reality, the flexible, employer-based plans that now dominate the landscape, and that Americans so cherish, could disappear far faster than the 5 year “grace period” that’s barely being discussed.

Of course, if the culprit isn’t who the media thinks it should be, the story will be buried faster than Janet Reno/Bill Clinton bulldozed Waco after they killed all the Branch Davidians.

EVERYTHING IN THE SOUTH IS ABOUT RACE!! You guys are such morons . In one sentence you write how blacks are always playing the race card (which by the way is a good card based on the deck being played) then in the next sentence you go on about how blacks don’t work and are on welfare etc which is contradictory to your statement about playing the race card (which in itself indicates an ideology that racism doesn not exist or is minimal).
Facts are that the largest group of people being supported by the Government for health care is eldery white people. Too bad that these same people dont want healthcare for the younger less fortunate so they can at least get to be elderly. Talk about selfish! THERE IS NO LOGICAL REASON PEOPLE IN THE US SHOULD DIE BECAUSE THEY CANT AFFORD HEALTHCARE. PERIOD EXCLAMATION POINT. Whew…got that out .

I knew of a black MARTA driver who said he was paid better than a school teacher, yet if socialist health care was propsed to him, he’d quit working so he’s become elgible. At a clinic in Marietta, I had to wait a long time and was asked to pay $35 or so for a co-pay. The illegal aliens weren’t asked to pay anything-they came in nice cars, had expensive clothes and their kids played with I-Pods. None came off the bus with me and none went out to wait for one when we left. It will be the illegal aliens who will sap the Obama healthcare system. Once sapped, I’m sure rationing will start and disabled-elderly will be told they won’t qualify(just like in Europe and Canada).Folks like Scott, McKinney, etc. wil also squeal racism, but if something like that happens to me, my cries of unfairness will go unheard.

Terri,
I don’t remember the Dems being in an uproar over the stimulus, partly b/c it was the Dems’ idea. Remember, they held a majority of the Senate by that time. Also, the people on welfare aren’t crying over too much gubment in their lives. It’s the crazy right-wingers who are saying they hate government, want nothing else to do with government, but without government they wouldn’t have roads, schools, medicare, jobs, unemployment checks, small business incentives and subsidies, etc. I’ve never heard someone on welfare say they had too much government in their lives lol. My point is, if you hate the government and all of its intrusion into your lives then why not tell Uncle Sam to shove that medicare and social security where the sun don’t shine. Don’t take the public option and keep your insurance!!! There’s a lot of things you can do besides bashing the other side by calling them names. That just makes you look like you can’t articulate your views and that is quite evident at this point. The Patriot Act looks to be way more intrusive than this public option for health care. The Patriot Act actually gives the government the right to listen in on your phone conversations!!!! However, since it was served up by Bush in the name of “patriotism” the repubes ate it all up. The views of anyone should be consistent but the repubes seem to waver based on who’s serving up the dish.

It is equally deplorable for African-Americans to attribute every bad thing to racism. @Mike & Elle Thank you Mike. You sound rational. Excuse Elle for not knowing that Terri with an “i” is a female. She loses track of her thoughts. She has me a Republican and never asked. She’s always assuming and we know what that means. When you assume, it makes an azz out of you and me. We must pity and excuse her. She’s ignorant. I don’t want to assume she’s black or the same rhetoric would apply to me as well. Just let the mind wonder and we can figure it out. Black and angry…..WHOA is me. By the way Elle, please always remember love is in the heart; hatred is in the mind. You are pathetic and sorry excuse for a human being and an American.

Elle, there was a gay guy the other day on a blog who stated a bigoted opinion. I called him on it, knowing he had to have been a target in the past and I was correct. He basically said he couldn’t help it.
Fact is, there will always be people who are racists, bigots, prejudice, biased or simply confused. But to accuse someone of being racist simply because they mention welfare people, that’s kind of over the top. Most of my customer base is black and I’ll check the mirror, but I believe I’m not. Zero problems. My son and his wife are chronic welfare cases. I’ve seen the damage welfare does to a person and I despise it. That’s where I’m coming from
To transfer that a little higher up, I despise the plans Barak Obama has as President of this nation and it has not a thing to do with his race, gender, religion (although that one does leave questions) or sexual orientation. I despise his plans because they are socialistic in nature and in direct opposition to the Constitution that made this nation great. That is the only reason.
He ’s not the only one who has tried to socialize the nation’s citizens but he’s been far more agressive than others.

@Mike I moved to GA from a blue state known as CT. Everyone complains about their taxes and their democratic politicians. I made the conscious decision to move to a Southern red state. Racism doesn’t always include a color. Some will say southerners are racist towards yankees. I’ve been here for 24 years and call it home. I love the color red; hate the color blue…..is that racist? lol It’s like Zell Miller (democrat) tried to tell his own party many years ago….the red states are just getting hotter and hotter. He was right. Too bad more democrats don’t behave like him…then maybe they would have a decent party. Here’s my racist comment, I find them to be unprofessional, hateful, spiteful, revengeful, list could go on and on. Humorous part is they bashed Bush for 8 years, won the election, have the majority and still aren’t happy. Wonder if the old saying Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it is true afterall. There’s no pleasing them or making them happy. Trying to reason with a far-left liberal is like taking a valium….A REAL DOWNER!

As I said I like dialogue. I’m not on this blog to see how far I can throw an insult, although sometimes, that’s the best I can do when someone proves dialogue is not something they’re good at. Look at the above posting from Confederate southern GOP nation killers (whew, I’m out of breath). Nothing to debate there is there?

I got away from the HMO for the same reasons why I don’t want one today. BHO means Better Help Ourselves. This guy has got to go. When they are losing the battle, they retort to faulty statistics about black people, crime, welfare and all that other typical hogwash. They all sound the same as if they were programmed like a windows operating system to speak the same tired lingo. The angry southern white man WILL remain stuck in the past as the rest of the forward thinking more civilized America passes him by. He is angry because he has been marginalized. It has been proven that the party in power dose not need the South to get elected. The ignorant hicks don’t want socialism but WILL SPRAY THE SYMBOL OF THE NATIONAL SOCIALIST PARTY on Congressman Scotts office. WTF? It irritates the crap out of me when people can read non-biased posts and glean racial bias out of them, but then don’t have the guts to talk about where they get that from. The only thing I can presume from that is that she has the bias and anything she reads, she’ll find a bias in it somewhere.
But terri, I have to disagree with you. i don’t believe Scott showed a racial bias in that townhall meeting. i believe he showed a bias against those who were not with the Healthcare plan he was supporting, but not a racial bias. I also believe the swastika painted on his building WAS a racial message, or possibly simply an insult, calling him a socialist. I also believe whoever did that was absolutely wrong.
I’m still waiting to find out if Scott will hold his healthcare townhall meeting on the 28th like he said at the end of the douglasville townhall meeting. I was there and I saw everything that happened from close up.
And I voted for romney, but only because he seemed to be the best qualified. never would I vote for someone just because they’re of my religion…….Harry Reid is a Latter-Day Saint– that should tell you why.

Rebecca, there’s an independent running against him. His name is Michael Frisbee (Yes, he’s looking at using flying discs for campaign advertising). So far, he’s who I’ll be voting for and, if I’m still here, I’ll do what I can with his campaign. He’s constitutional, supports the fair tax and is also fed up with Scott (guess he’s a racist?). I believe he’s on facebook and I believe he has a website. I’ll be watching him to see if he becomes like the rest, but so far, so good.
Frankly, I’m extremely disillusioned with the two party system and with the two parties. If possible, everyone I vote for will be an independent or a third party candidate. I think we’re at the point where we can’t do much more damage. (I hope and pray)
Speaking about the Scott townhall meeting in Douglasville, Ga., do you guys realize, the first person who spoke on the healthcare package was not the doctor? The first person was a local black resident and he’s the one who got Scott ticked off first. The doctor simply reaped what the first guy sowed. As I said, I was there. I was supposed to be the next speaker when they shut things down.

Chris, the elitist atitude is a thing that deserves considerable study. It has always amazed me how a group of Americans can feel they are more capable of making decisions for me than I am, and that’s basically what elites are saying and what elitists believe. At present, that mentality is beyond my comprehension, so I like to study Hillary Clinton.
I know it has something to do with their raising, and with their education, but I can’t find the key that says this one grows up normal and that one grows up to be an elitist. What is it? Do you understand it better?

So the EASY ANSWER for why black people see bi-racial individuals as black is because of the one-drop rule circa 1890. Correct? And, this is applicable today how? Last I checked many bi racial children are born everyday to a black man and a white woman. No slave and no master around. Many of these children are raised (like our President) by white guardians. If a bi racial( excuse me, black) child can grow up to be president than why continue to hold one race responsible for the sins of their ancestors 120 years ago? The actions of men and women that many don’t even know the history of today. And, which race today still lives in the past. Where would we be today if whites still lived in this past? I know who wouldn’t be President. I think we’ve come a long way which was the point of my earlier comment. So you see racism still exists ,but its not one sided.

OK, I get it. The ONE DROP rules sure didn’t apply to Obama did it? Last I heard, the white family raised him. Quit living in the past. Obama is neither black nor white period. Racism exists alright, but its not one-sided. MLK wasn’t just speaking to whites when he dreamed of a colorblind world.

I lived through the time when the national government in Germany were just trying to do “what was right” and most of Germany let them alone because they were “true Germans,” and were not being taken away. The only “got it” after it was to late to protest. For any representative of ‘all the people’ to tell his people they don’t understand and they need to stand aside and “let us” decide what health care is needed….they that rep needs to be voted out of office!

Think for yourself, you make some good points in your post, but as a young, forward-thinking, independent and financially stable African-American man I still see instances where Whites hold on to ways and beliefs of the past. I am not trying to excuse any of the social ills committed by African-Americans but discrimination, racism and prejudice still exist in this country.
I really do love all men for their humanity and I live in an intown neighborhood that is very diverse because of gentrification. There are still some of the original older African-American residents, there are young professionals, black and white, and several Latino families all residing in one neighborhood and when there are issues we band together as community to protect our families and property. America we are better than this senseless bickering and arguing. I am trying to understand the conservative mindset that doesnt trust government and it would be good if we all stood together and looked at those that are different from us to gain understand. The Bible says “Behold how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity”. Believe it or not God is not concerned with your political ideology as much as he is with how you treat your brother.

Saddened, but not optimistic: I didn’t mean to imply racism no longer existed. I admit unfortunately that race continues to factor in everything. My point was racism exists on both sides especially with the outcome of this most recent election. If you concede that the majority of the minority vote was for Obama that only gets you to maybe 22 percent of the electorate. In other words, Obama wouldn’t have been elected president without the votes of many white voters. With this backdrop, the response I received to why black people see bi racial individuals as black was dated in the past( One Drop rule, etc,1890).Racism will not end until everyone stops living in the past, both black and white.
Look at the conservative mindset as one of preserving freedom and liberties.True conservatives believe in limited government in our lives for this very reason.History is replete with examples of what big government does to individual freedoms. When government is not limited than it slowly gets bigger and it slowly corrupts. Think about it: Does government ask you to volunteer your monies?Stop paying them and see the result. Income tax was suppose to be a temporary measure to fund the war.As was social security, etc, etc.Do you see not the liberties that you lose? Everything is now forced on you, but always for some greater good.Big Brother always knows whats best.I choose to believe in the better angels of our nature, and believe this is better advanced through freedom and volunteerism than through big brother thinking he knows whats best for everyone else.Think about this: How much larger would charitable donations be if there wasn’t a limit being imposed by the government.

Think for yourself, you are a thoughtful individual and I for one appreciate your candor and the rationality that you’ve brought to this debate. I like the way you broke down the conservative mindset and just to let you know, many African-Americans prescribe to these ideals. But as much as many conservatives distrust governemnt, many African-Americans distrust the “white establishment” going unchecked without government oversight. This distrust doesn’t cause me to hate whites or any other groups, especiaaly since I personally haven’t experienced discrimination but history is history and the fact remains that many of the social-ills of this country are a result of our sordid past. Mortgage lenders, colleges and universities, the U.S. Mililitary and many other American insitutions engaged in discrimination and not just against blacks but women and other minorities as well.
I believe there is a better day coming in America, because this country is just great. I am a proud American regardless of my race, which according to science really doesn’t exist, and I am raising my kids to judge people by their character and not their physical appearance. Old racist black politicians need to be voted out as much as old racist white politicians need to be voted out. Let’s take OUR country back for the better and secure a brighter future for generations to come. NOTE: I am a 26 year old, African-American, husband, father of two that has never utilized government assistance, even though my wife and I needed it when we were both still undergrads.

I am totally disgusted with the selfish, “I have mine-the heck with you” attitude of some “Americans.” I support a government sponsored health care OPTION. I am on Social Security – a government social welfare program and get Medicare – a government run healthcare program. It absolutely amazes me that so many in my age group -as well as others- “just don”t get it” or refuse to recognize that these are the types of programs they’re railing against. You can be darn sure however, that they wouldn’t give them up and pay their own way. Nor would they give up government paid perscriptions – a Republican program that they forgot to fund and has sent us serious debt.

Carole taylor, you start out complaining about selfish attitudes and then continue to state you support the government sponsored healthcare program– that’s selfish. You’re on social security and you want more. You deserve social security, provided you put into the system during your younger years. You don’t deserve someone else’s income to supplement that. They should have the option of telling you “yes you can have it” or “I want to keep mine”.
So many people in your age group are against this program because they realize the damage to the union it will cause…they are being very unselfish in that. They also realize they are destined to lose coverage under medicare when that system loses money (which is part of the plan). That’s not so unselfish. Point is, there are numerous reasons people are against this plan and likely the same number of reasons people are for it.
Saddened but optimistic, sounds like you’re part of the backbone of this society. Those of us who have worked most of our lives and never became a burden on others, are the reason this nation became what it has become. Thank you.
People don’t trust government (black, white, red, yellow, doesn’t matter) because the government has consistently proven themselves not trustworthy. Social Security and the “lockbox” that is empty is a great example. These townhall meetings, the subsequent attacks by government on private citizens who are exercising their right to speak freely is another example.
Have you seen the government’s declaration that, leftwing extremists are likely terrorists. Have you seen that? It’s really interesting that they can believe because someone has liberal leanings that they may be extremists and possibly terrorists and a danger to the nation. I hope that upsets you, because it should.
Racism did exist, does exist and will exist. It exists on all sides of the issue. Bigotry exists among races, differing religions, and so many other groups. It’s a fact of life. Our job is to not let it exist within our own lives individually. At least we can then know we have set a good example for those who haven’t grown out of it yet, but there will always be those who want to be treated better than others, and they’ll have all the reasons in the world why it should be so. Whites, because they built the nation; Blacks because they built the nation. Gets hard to remember the phrase “We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal…

Oh yes, if OBAMA is just trying to do what he said he would do, then why have I not started getting my $8 a week reduction in payroll taxes?
I’d ask if anyone out there has noticed a reduction on the their paycheck but most idiots out there would not know where to look on their paystub.
OBAMA is just another lying politicain just like all the rest, rep and dem!

I saw the clips of the doctor “respectfully” screaming and refusing to shut up and listen. I’m white. I was appalled. The doctor was unbelievably rude, he tried to hijack a meeting that had been called to discuss a totally different matter. Then I saw him again on CNN refusing to wait his turn to speak and trying to talk over the points Rep Scott making. What a jerk.

Why is it that all of the people that are crying foul over the Healthcare Bill (except for Herman Cain seem to be white)? Also, why do they bring up socialism and link it to Russia and communism? Why bring up illegals? Why bring up welfare cheats? Why bring up baby momas? Why bring up losing our freedom? Could it be racism? Of course it is. Black people have lived under this tyranny for centuries so stop trying to hide the truth.
Why not let the politicians discuss the issues in the healthcare plan so that we all can understand it? How about being civil and respect the opinions of others? Leave the racism at home and keep it to yourself.

I have always told my kids, its how you present yourself matters. Regardless of how frustrated you are, do not go around yelling and screaming if you are trying to get a point across. If you do you are simply trying to provoke a situation. People are not stupid. The world is looking at the people of the United States and seeing it for what it is. This country is killing itself with this “us vs them” mentality. You can not stop progression. The good old days are gone where you had an underclass who had no representation whatsoever.

Keeping it Real: Wow! A bi racial( Oh I forgot, Black) man is elected to the highest office in the land and you cry racism. How bold is that statement. Wake up! And please stop living in the past. If not for the white vote than someone else would be president. What do you tell your children? Oh, this bi racial kid grew up to be president, but you can forget this ever happening to you because of all the white racism and tyranny we are living under. Maybe time to look in the mirror? Which race is living in the past? By the way, when government forces something on you than freedoms are taken away.

The black people keep saying it, so now Im gonna say it. They say their proud that their president is black! Well, Im saying Im proud my president is white! It goes both ways folks! Skin color has nothing to do with reasons many of us are against Obama’s health care reform and other policies, its what he stands for. Guess were still living in the 60s. Wait, are there still white and black water fountains? This is 2009 people, get over pulling the race card every chance you get for no reason, that card has expired, cut it up in pieces!!!

Saddened, but now optimistic: Thanks for your post and sorry for the typo. Now is much better than not. I would understand better your thoughts if I knew who you were refering to when you mentioned the “white establishment”. Who is this white establishment? And how does the government actually protect you from it? The government is suppose to be representative of the people of which the majority are white; so in essence the government is more white than black, isn’t it? Oversite is just another fancy word for more regulations which means more government and less freedoms. How does fewer liberties protect you? Maybe, just maybe the democratic party wants you to think this way, because it seems to me that if they can continue to make the majority of blacks feel like victims, than they know you will continue to support their party.Just think for a minute. Are they not always making you out as the victim? Ask yourself why? It’s ironic that my favorite conservative author just happens to be a black man, Thomas Sowell. Diversity of opinion, is important, but its hard to see sometimes in the black community when over ninety percent favor one party. When the ratios get to seventy percent black support( more reflective of the country), then progress(real progress) will be evident.I don’t care if they support the green, libertarian or any party for that matter(More than two parties in this country would be welcome in my opinion). What is even more ironic and confusing to me is the support for a party(Democrat) whose history is more itentified with anti-black causes.

The “white establishment” that I’m referring to are the banks (discriminatory lending practices), Housing (restrictive covenants), state legislatures (had laws banning interracial marriage) and I could site so many other practices. I’m not at all bitter, I don’t hate or feel discontent toward any other race, but the fact remains that I and many other African-Americans have families and they themselves that have experienced these practices at the hands of the “white establishment” you may say get over it, but my grandmother is 80 and she’s a very strong woman, God-fearing and fair but there are times that she really is uneasy about whites because of the sordid history of Mississippi, where she lives.
I read in another post that the Republican party has some great Ideals, that really represent America and who know it may be the party of the future but right now it has been hi-jacked by the Southerners that prescribe to the ideology that Nixon promoted with the “Southern Statedy” and that makes the party undesirable. I have seen some very mean things on this site but I remain optimistic that there are better days ahead for my 5year old and 18mth old. I love my white, black and hispanic neighbors not because of their race but because of their God-given humanity.

Yes it is true that the democratic party’s history is nasty, but that doesn’t compensate for the republican party’s now. I am a conservative in many instances but I don’t believe in pushing my beliefs off on others and that makes it hard for me to join up with the conservatives and republicans.

Keeping it real, you might want to check with JC Watts and Chairman Steele. Last I heard they both are against the healthcare plan, and last I heard they are both pretty much black. You won’t necessarily hear about them on the news, nor will you hear about other black people who are against the plan. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
At the Congressman Scott townhall meeting which is the topic of this thread, the first person to speak in opposition to the plan was a black man.
You night be surprised.

There is nothing racial about the current healthcare debate.
The debate is between:
A. A Capitalist, free-market approach to healthcare reform (the “mob” view) – reducing onerous government regulations limiting innovation, reforming our tort law to prevent frivolous malpractice lawsuits, and reducing taxes to allow citizens to buy good health insurance.
— or —
B. A government run health insurance exchange, featuring a government run public health insurance option, higher taxes (a less economic freedom) to pay for it, and bureaucratic control of an elemental part of a free society.
Scott’s injection of race into the debate is insulting to this constituent (from Smyrna) who respects all people who take responsibility for themselves and don’t expect their fellow citizens to subsidize their lifestyles.

What isn’t being said here is that the meeting went 3.5 hours, almost 4. There was no “protestors” that the city manager had to quiet down. No cameras or posters were allowed in the event, and the police would not allow any protestors with sings to be on the sidewalks in front of this PUBLIC BUILDING.
They took a list, one was for Hwy 92 questions, one was for “Other”. They said that at the end of the meeting, after all the Highway 92 questions were asked, that the floor would be open to other topics. Well that is when the doctor asked his question. Everyone had been heard on Hwy 92 for 3.5+ hours, many being duplicate questions.
So Mr. Scott is not being honest in the portrayal of that meeting.
Well – Mr. Scott will find out tomorrow at his “Health Fair” that his constituents are fed up and want answers, that they have a voice and are demanding he listen to us and vote against this healthcare. If he votes yes – he’ll find a district voting NO on Mr. Scott.
I hope you all will be attending or tuning in on the event in Atlanta tomorrow, America’s Health Care Town Hall. I will be responding to Mr. Scott’s tirade and his ignoring his constituents at the event as one of it’s speakers. http://www.AmericasTownhall.us

Unreal, this thread stopped with your comment because most posters realized just how stupid you really are. It doesn’t matter what you are told, you will incessantly believe that, if anyone is against a policy fronted by President Obama, it has to be because they are racists. According to you, it can’t be a statement against a policy, it has to be a statement against a black man, because we’re upset that he made it to the White House. How utterly childish!!!
So, unreal, you’ve succeeded in stopping dialogue by being so stupid and bigoted, that people who think like you do, are sitting back saying “duh, yeah what he said”, while those with brains are saying, “why am I wasting my time talking to a brain-dead bigot.
Something tells me you’re proud of that.
