Karen Handel: ‘Yes, I have a high school diploma’

Lori Geary of WSB-TV polished off the Karen Handel-Wikipedia affair on Thursday evening, with an interview with the secretary of state, who is also a Republican candidate for governor.

“For the record, yes, I have a high school diploma,” Handel said.

See the video here.

All this started last week, with a Roll Call column by Stuart Rothenberg, in which he wrote that Handel had finished high school in Maryland with a mere GED. (Handel took a limited number of college courses, but didn’t finish with a degree.)

Rothenberg cited Georgia sources for the statement about the GED, but acknowledged that the same information is contained in a Wikipedia entry on Handel.

According to Erick Erickson, who operates the PeachPundit political blog, the person who made the Wikipedia change used a computer with an IP address traceable to one of the state’s two “Sloppy Floyd” towers adjacent to the Capitol.

Staffers for state Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine, a rival to Handel for the GOP nomination, have offices at Sloppy Floyd. But so do several thousand other state employees.

Erickson has fingered Brian Laurens, a north Georgia field director for the Oxendine campaign, as a probable suspect in the Wikipedia adjustment. WSB didn’t name Laurens, but the Oxendine campaign sent over an affidavit signed by Laurens, denying his involvement.

In a shot of the affidavit, Laurens’ name is clearly shown.

The Oxendine campaign denies all and blames the Handel campaign for spreading misinformation, Geary reported:

“This is politics at its worse and one of the reasons that people are so turned off to being involved in political campaigns,” said Oxendine’s campaign manager Tim Echols in a written statement. “We believe that the real story here is that a supporter of Karen Handel has initiated a negative attack without offering any evidence.”

And Handel:

“I have no idea who did this… all I would like to really believe is that one of my opponents would not have engaged in something this low,” said Handel.

“If anyone from my team did anything like that, that individual would be fired,” said Handel.

Thus endeth the foodfight.

“In a shot of the affidavit, Laurens’ name is clearly shown.”

The affidavit also clearly shows that Laurens only disclaimed involvement as “RomneyGingrich2012.”

The wiki editor, however, went by the name of RomneyGingrich12, not RomneyGingrich2012.

So yes, Laurens’ name is clearly shown, but the affidavit is clearly muddy.

Heck, if Handel only finished eighth grade, she’d still be smarter than our current governor.

No large corporation would even interview a CEO candidate who didn’t have a college degree, much less hire that person. Why would the state elect a CEO without a degree?

Bill Gates, Barry Diller and Michael Dell have all done fairly well for themselves. On a more local level J.B. Fuqua, Robert Woodruff and Ted Turner seem to have managed to put food on their families’ tables without college degrees.

Just to be clear, Laurens explicitly disclaims editing Handel’s wiki page under any name, but only disclaims knowledge of anyone else editing it using the nonexistent “RomneyGingrich2012″ name.

“Moreover, I have no knowledge of anyone associated with the Oxendine Campaign, or anyone else using the identity ‘RomneyGingrich2012′, to alter the Wikipedia entry for Secretary of State Karen Handel with regard to her education.”

Again, there is no RomneyGingrich2012, so this statement is meaningless. The question is whether it is intentionally meaningless or an honest mistake.

Well, let’s see how Roy will do the next four years. Do not see any ‘winners’ in the group from the GOP. They will have one food fight after another — just like we are now seeing! Citizens deserve better!

Usually politicians with or without a college degree are not be trusted. Don’t forget some people with a college degree are educated above their own intelligence.

Could this be the same Brian Laurens who was arrested a few years ago for being in possession of stolen political signs in Cherokee County? He got lucky that night due to some outside assistance.

What a silly dispute this is. What is the substantive difference between someone who has a high school degree and someone who has a GED? Doesn’t seem like much of a difference to me. It doesn’t change the fact that she didn’t have enough determination, dedication, and intelligence to graduate from college. I’m sick of hearing how she had a rough upbringing. Do you think everyone enrolled at GSU, UGA, and Tech comes from perfectly happy households? Anyways, isn’t her situation a lot better now? A nice husband, no kids. Then why isn’t she enrolled at GSU? If Sonny can run his multi-million dollar business on State time, she can certainly earn a college degree on State time too.

Karen’s people messed this one up b-a-a-a-a-ddd!!! Towery just polled this issue. All Republicans, even those without a college degree, think the governor should have a college degree. So anything that emphasizes that she didn’t graduate college loses her votes.

I like Karen Handel, so far. However, I am concerned with repeated warnings I’ve been getting from other christian homeschoolers in my network that she has very ‘not conservative’ opinions in regards to homeschooling. I’ve tried to contact her several times on her website, but she never responds.
I will actually campaign AGAINST her, if I find these things to be true, so I do intend to find out.
Any information about this?

herbK: Your comment dismissing highly successful people like Bill Gates, Michael Dell as a matter of timing or rather “back in the old days that was ok.” doesn’t hold up. What about Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg? That’s tech so that’s different right? Well what about “Lost”, “Alias”, “Felicity” and “Mission Impossible 3″ writer/director J.J. Abrams? And CEOs? Apple CEO Steve Jobs doesn’t have a college degree either. Steve left Apple and came back. When he returned the staff at Apple agreed that he was the right man for the job of CEO. After his return Apple went from a company fading into obscurity into the powerhouse it is today. Some people are auto-didactic. Self taught leaders who don’t need a piece of paper to validate who they are or what they know. Want to go old school?. Nikola Tesla. What college did he graduate from? He didn’t.
I support Karen Handel.

Karen Handel is a well spoken, intelligent woman. I trust her more than the Harvard educated crowd we currently have in Washington running our country into the ground. Credentials only take you so far…ability to run our State is what truly matters here. We should focus on what the woman could d do now in the position. She has proven herself capable in her previous positions within the State. Would any of you really question Bill Gates ability to lead….the objection sounds like a cop out to me.

On the question of CEOs with or without college degrees, please stop using Bill Gates as an example. Bill Gates went to the most prestigious private school in Seattle that his M.D. father could afford, was accepted to and attended Harvard, but dropped out to do what he does. Yeah, he didn’t go to college, but his social capital is hardly comparable to very many people at all. His starting line towards success was, to put it mildly, advanced at birth.

Some people can be successful without formal education, but the chances are that those individuals are bringing a lot of social capital to the table which the average person cannot. I would wager that almost anyone who could be named as achieving economic success without formal postsecondary education had an exemplary secondary education and/or a privileged background.

That’s funny, Marietta Mom, because I felt the same way about the last Harvard (and Yale!) educated president. I think it’s telling that America’s first MBA president left office with the economy in shambles.

Mansfield, that just shows your ignorance! The first MBA president didn’t leave the economy in shambles, the Congress and the people who attacked this country did. Educate yourself! Speak only of which you know. At this point, it seems that you know very little.
