One of two lawsuits involving Georgia’s voter photo ID law came to an end on Monday, as the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal of Common Cause v. Georgia.
The high court usually doesn’t say why it doesn’t grant petitions for a writ of certiorari, but Gov. Sonny Perdue was happy to interpret.
Said Perdue:
The Supreme Court’s decision today is a victory for ensuring fair elections. It properly defers to Georgia’s policy makers, and it recognizes that the Voter ID Act we passed in 2006 does not impede the right to vote.
By rejecting the plaintiffs’ appeal, the highest court in the United States rejected a key argument still being argued in a state court lawsuit filed against Georgia’s elected officials by the Democratic Party of Georgia.
I am optimistic that the state courts will agree with the Supreme Court and protect the integrity of the voting process.”
Secretary of State Karen Handel, who has made voting laws a centerpiece of her Republican campaign to replace Perdue next year, expressed similar sentiments:
“Today’s denial of yet another challenge to our common sense photo ID law represents a long-fought victory for Georgia voters and the security of our elections,” Handel said in a press release. “After four years of litigation by special interest groups, plaintiffs are still unable to find one Georgia voter who was unable to cast a ballot due to our photo ID law.”

Thank you SoS Handel for fighting for the citizens of Georgia. Look forward to you being the first female Governor of Georgia. BRING IT ON!
Dishonest to the core.

There is one thing the Republicans won’t address about this, and it makes them dishonest to the core on this issue.
If they were really concerned about voting fraud, why have they done nothing to address absentee ballots, and in fact rejected attempts in the General Assembly to adress absentee ballot fraud?
They may not be wrong on the specific areas of voting fraud they wish to address, but they are a total fraud when they claim they are concerned with the integrity of the voting process.

SoS Handel worked with the GA. legislature to make absentee ballot fraud felony.
Dishonest to the core.

She did? Then what of the reports that Democrats tried to put amendments to the voter ID bill that would address absentee voter fraud, and the Republicans turned them down?

Total BS. handel has done nothing to prohibit voter fraud. She is merely trying to garner attention for the election. She is the consummate loser.

herbK is correct. I used to think Handel was a competent, no nonsense politician. Maybe she used to be. However, at some point she decided that if she was to attain a higher office she would have to pander to the base of the Republican Party. She has been very successful in that effort. She is a disgrace.

CopyLeft…I like that black panther idea. We reps could incorporate your suggestion, then run amuck like the panthers in OH that were accused of voter intimidation and get away with it, voter intimidation that is!!!
Thanks for the idea!!

Right now, the only ‘coloreds’ I see are the rednecks, the hispanics and the middle-easterners, many of which have no green card.

Have any of you ever been to a state elections board meeting? Why not try and get yourself educated. Karen Handel doesn’t have a handle on anything. Even the republicans on the board are fighting with her. She is a disgrace. My grandkids will need a governess–that’s the only place she’s going.
