This posted by The State newspaper:
The South Carolina Supreme Court has ordered Gov. Mark Sanford to apply for the disputed $700 million in federal stimulus money.
The court voted 5-0, with Justice Costa Pleicones concurring in a separate opinion, that the General Assembly had the authority in passing the state budget to order Sanford to apply for the money. Sanford contended that a federal law passed in February gave him the sole authority to apply for the money.
The justices also issued a rare writ of mandamus ordering Sanford to apply for the money.
Unless you care to argue that South Carolina’s high court has come down with a severe case of judicial activism, this is a major loss for a possible presidential contender.

State legislators (like U.S. Legislators) believe they matter more than the sitting Governor/President- and that they believe they know what is best for that state. Like their federal counterparts, the future bill due will not be their problem. Mark Sanford is for small government, and a conserative who occasionally leans libertarian. In the current climate of his own state he is well liked by the populace in general; but appears somewhat strange and “what is expected from the southern region” by most of the liberal areas in the U.S. And on the the issue of federal spending in the 2009 climate – he is a voice in the wilderness.
Today Sanford is eating some crow – thanks to the S.C. Supremes – a big story today in South Carolina. If the U.S. economy is still reeling in 8-10 months; Mark Sanford will look very impressive to those who follow his general values, and wake up many other dissimilar folks.
Personally, its always rubbed me wrong when someone told me that I had to do something that I was adamantly against. Later, sometimes years later, I was proven right – long after the issue was buried. S. C. should hold their state government to account for where every dime of this money is allocated and use it smartly.
So much of what is deciphered today out of Washington and the current adminstration tells me that Gov. Sanford just may be on the right track.

Mark Sanford is a megalomaniac who thinks he embodies the government of South Carolina in his person, a sort of “divine right of governors” to abolish things like public education.

He’s made his point. When all this debt doesn’t do anything but give us inflation that put’s Jimmy Carter to shame, and the whole thing falls on the Barry, he, at least, will be able to say he tried.

You can’t spend your way out of a depression folks. The U.S. government is mortgaging the future to try and help today. I commend the man for turning down this money. He tried to save you and me from having another 700 million to pay back to China.

Sanford’s an idiot. The entire infrastructure of his state is eroding and he wants to stand on political ambition and ceremony. Thank God saner more sensible minds interceded. Your political ambitions have become nonexistent.

Jim how is this a serious loss for Sanford? To conservatives he is now a hero who stood up to Obama… and was shot down by an activist court (whether they were truly activist or not). He will welcomed with open arms by fiscal conservatives.

Not really Keith.
I have had the pleasure of spending a lot of time in the low country of South Caroline…and Sanford is not well liked. Neither is Demint. Both are viewed as obstructionists that have yet to provide solutions.
Both being incumbents, they will draw considerable support from conservative contributors…but if a decent primary opponent comes along, expect these two to be thrown under the bus.

Lindsey Graham, take a bow. The drama YOU put in motion has ended just the way you envisioned it. You think that folks will not see your BIG GOVERNMENT hands all over this? You may speak different than the socialist trying to destroy this country, but your actions are the same as BUSH – a fake, liar and traitor. Can anyone really find a hero in this saga?
Meanwhile, back at the printing presses:
“BRING MORE PAPER! WE NEED TO PILE ON MORE DEBT WHILE WE CAN!”
(and the ignorant gnaves think this is money – bwa-ha-ha-ha)
