In Albany, a confrontation over payback worth $1.8 million

Down in southwest Georgia, they’re talking about a loud and angry spat between a Democratic state lawmaker and a Republican lobbyist — over who’s to blame for the disappearance of funding for a fine arts center named for Ray Charles.

The following was posted this afternoon in the Albany Herald:

Mounting tensions over how $1.8 million earmarked for a fine arts building at Albany State University was stripped from Georgia’s upcoming budget boiled over Tuesday.

State Rep. Winfred Dukes (D-Albany) — whose statements against legislation some have cited may have caused the money to be cut —confronted Albany’s lobbyist outside city commission chambers.

That lobbyist, Rufus Montgomery, had just finished recapping the 2009 session of the Georgia General Assembly for city commissioners when Dukes publicly rebuked him outside of the city chambers. Dukes claimed that Montgomery has contributed to “fingerpointing” that put the focus squarely on Dukes, his voting record and his conduct in the General Assembly.

No punches were thrown, but there was this:

But minutes later, Dukes again confronted Montgomery. This time Dukes threw his wallet on the floor. He then pulled out credit cards and cash in a reference to comments made at the Capitol during the General Assembly about the level of funding the city had authorized for Montgomery.

Dukes voted against $62 million in tax breaks for Delta and Gulfstream, which the legislator said was unfair to average Georgians. There’s also some speculation at the web site SWBA Politics that Duke’s failure to vote for or against S.B. 200, the bill to reorganize the state Department of Transportation, was involved in the payback.

Same here. It’s important to note that this “speculation” you mentioned does come from a high level source close ties to Republican leadership who wish to remain anonymous at this time. In addition, another of the local delegation, Rep. Carol Fullerton (who’s gone through plenty of drama on her own this year) indicates that she was told the same thing according to earlier Albany Herald reports. Rep Ed Rynders hasn’t weighed in on the issue yet.

It seems Rep. Dukes may be the ONLY one who doesn’t seem to feel his votes cost funding to Albany State ;)

Illegal immigrants are the ones to blame.

Another clueless democrat. He won’t cooperate with anyone else in the legislature but gets surprised when no one will support him either. Dumb as a box of rocks.

Yeah, just roll over and vote the way the Repubs tell you to. Mindless. It’s a free country, you are suppose to vote for your constituents desires (unless their are other reasons that you state), and you get “punished” for not blindly following the Gov.

He should have said what you did, Road Scholar. That would have sent a much more understandable message.

As a life-long SOWEGAn I can proclaim, with absolute certainty, that Albany is a crap hole. Although the decades old Democrat-run government is not as bad as let’s say, Macon, Albany has very little going for it. Frankly, it never has. Yes, the hunting is great but Albany has nothing to do with it. In fact, once a tourist lands in Albany they are wisked out of town and rarley come back before the return trip home. Were it not for the MCLB and Pheobe Putney Memorial Hospital, which runs rough-shod over the city and the surounding communities and drove away one of the largest employers in the area, Cooper Tire, by refusing meet the needs that a large employer seeks when doing business in a rather small town, the city would further evolve into a failed muncipality and be a national disgrace.

Thomasville, on the other hand, is a wonderful town. The City of Thomasville has long out perfomred Albany with far fewer assets. Albany is a breach of the Blackshear Dam and a B.R.A.C.C. report away from total collaspe. Sad, really. Peace.

Truer words have never been blogged, Sir Winston. As a life long Albanian I must say not nothing surprises me when it comes to Albany and its political class. Why don’t they just put up that yellow and black crime scene tape around the city and be done with it.
