Over the weekend, some of the Republican’s top names declared the formation of a group assigned the task of searching out new meaning for the beleaguered GOP.
The first event in the series labeled the National Council for a New America was held in northern Virginia. It is a suburban area that went for Obama in the presidential election — helping him become the first Democratic presidential candidate since 1964 to win the state.
More than 50 people crowded into a pizza parlor to hear former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney speak.
The effort has brought out the skepticism in many. ABC News said the Saturday session seemed “less like a town hall meeting and more like a therapy session for conservatives in crisis.”
While the group of GOP leaders declare themselves to be on a quest for “common-sense” solutions to national problems, closely associated with that search is the matter of who will point the way.
Politico this morning focuses on Romney, the former Massachusetts governor and 2008 presidential candidate, who appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.
Moderator John King asked Romney about Time magazine’s inclusion of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and radio giant Rush Limbaugh on a list of the world’s 100 most influential political leaders.
Wrote Politico:
Romney, who has not ruled out another White House bid, said he wanted more influential Republicans on the list before adding pointedly: “I think there are a lot more influential Republicans than that would suggest.”
“But was that the issue on the most beautiful people or the most influential people?” he continued. “I’m not sure. If it’s the most beautiful, I understand. We’re not real cute.”
While you ponder that, consider these items found while perusing this morning’s ajc.com:
An overview of the city of Atlanta’s financial crisis. Atlanta’s $4 billion water and sewer system overhaul could collapse under crushing debt and a low credit rating. Easy grades equate to failing grads. Peachtree City mayor says he’ll run for state insurance commissioner. Democrats sense an opportunity on gay marriage.
Some opinion:
Jay Bookman asks, why not hold terrorists right here in Georgia? Cynthia Tucker thinks the Voting Rights Act is still essential. Kyle Wingfield, the new guy, says we shouldn’t be using Europe as a philosophic guide.
From elsewhere in Georgia:
Columbus Ledger-Enquirer: A Q&A with Dan Amos, chairman and Dan CEO of Aflac, who faces shareholders today for the first time in 20 years. Savannah Morning News: How Eric Johnson decided to run for governor.
And beyond:
WP: New York Times to file notice it will close Boston Globe. WSJ: A dispatch from a quarantined hotel in Hong Kong. USNWP: Why Carrie Prejean may not be an effective spokeswoman for opponents of gay marriage. LAT: Joe Biden openly defies swine flu, enters Amtrak station today.

So Big Jim, I see that you are still obsessed with Palin. Not a single weeke can go by without your attempting to run a negative story on Plain. What do you do on weekends sit and watch SNL reruns all the time? Congrats on beating the anorexia, by the way.

Do not worry Mitt Blog, Jim Galloway is a hack “journalist” with a Palin problem. He is obsessed. Not many people read Jim’s tripe, and those that do see right through him. Keep wathcing his blog. He will attack Palin any and every chance he gets. Even if he has to make it up. The man is sick. I bet he was an early Edwards supporter. You know the type…

Only trailertrash defends trailertrash Palin…the same trailertrash that thinks folks will ever forget Romney is just one more of the Gay Old Pervert draft-dodgers…like Saxby Chambliss, Sonny Perdue, George Bush, and the rest of that scum that have no problem having others get sent to kill and die in false wars for the Anti-Christ as long as they and their kids can dodge it.

Good for Romney.
The Klan base of the GOP is already p-issed at him, he has nothing to lose by attacking their queen.

I am liking Romney and Jeb Bush more and more that I read about them. These two can rebuild the GOP if they stay on message and lead with basic principals that can help the country in the 21st century. Even Jeb said it best that the GOP needs to let go of the Reagan nostalgia and listen to America and put together policy positions that most Americans today can agree on. Basically a forward thinking agenda that benefits the mainstream and not one side and one view. Mitt Romney is very good as well. He was battered by the social right during the primaries because of his religion and past stances on wedge issues. However, the man won election to one of the most liberal states in the union because of his common sense approach to government and putting forth policies that work.
Another person that I am starting to like is Jim Demint in South Carolina. He took a lot of flack about his comments soon after Arlen Specter left the GOP, but he wrote a very interesting article in the Wall Street Journal over the weekend which is sort of like a blue print for the GOP to rebuild. They can be a big tent party and appeal to all regions of the country and one element of the party should not have more say or more power over the others.
I don’t like either party the way they are structured now because both are only out for their own interests; the Democrats tax and spend and the Republicans acting like their little brothers. But some of these figures can rebuild a respectable party and one that America can turn to. Both Romney and Jeb Bush can lead the charge as they have proven track records of success.
