DuBose Porter just jumped into 2010 Democratic race for governor

House Minority Leader DuBose Porter of Dublin has officially announced that he would enter the 2010 Democratic campaign for governor. In an e-mail just received, the state lawmaker and newspaper publisher identified transportation as the determining straw.

He followed his e-mail up with a phone call. “People are going to have plenty of time to think about a change in leadership while they sit in traffic,” Porer said.

Porter joins former labor commissioner David Poythress and Attorney General Thurbert Baker in the contest. Former Gov. Roy Barnes is still in the wings.

Porter said an increasingly crowded field didn’t preclude conversations among the gubernatorial candidates to negotiate a single candidate in July 2010. “Politics is an evolving process. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t. We’ve already seen what happens when it doesn’t,” Porter said — a reference to the debilitating Mark Taylor-Cathy Cox fight in 2006.

Below is the e-mailed statement from Porter:

After this year’s failure to pass a transportation funding bill by the Republican leadership it has become apparent that if Georgia is to move forward there will have to be a new vision coming from the Governor’s office. Smaller government is good, but not when its goal is to dismantle transportation, law enforcement, and education. These are vital services that must be maintained if Georgia is to move forward with America.

The governor and his leadership team have used this economic downturn as an excuse to dismantle these fundamental programs; programs on which our entire economy rests. This session we sponsored HB 365 which offered up a way to find an expected $1 billion in uncollected revenue without raising taxes a dime. HB 356 would have implemented a new point of sales policy exactly like Alabama. This governor and his leadership in the House and Senate chose to turn this money down because it would have funded a lot of the programs they chose to cut. Programs our citizens needed.

The governor and this leadership were cutting the funding to QBE funding formula which goes to our schools and law enforcement when we had money and now they have added transportation to their list. This year’s lack of leadership on transportation and their personal grabs for power at the expense of the people convinced me to throw my hat into the ring.

Poythress, too, on Monday named transportation as a crucial issue in the coming campaign. Said Poythress, in a statement:

Our need for action on transportation both in metro and rural Georgia is critical. And not just to reduce commute times. If we don’t get results soon, it will further drag down our economy. In fact a recent study on transportation- commissioned by Governor Perdue reported that 320,000 jobs could be lost because of nagging transportation problems. This is unacceptable.

Interesting. I admit that I don’t know much about Dubose Porter, so I can’t really say whether or not he would be a good governor. I’ll be doing my research on him. In the meantime, I’d like to know what other bloggers can tell me about him.

Name One,

You have no idea what this man and fine representative has done for his community in Laurens and Johnson counties. You will find out the many things he has done. He has been a champion of education and you’ll see has a long and distinguished career in the legislature. Go down to the areas of Dublin and ask about DuBose. You’re about to find out.

A ray of sunshine for our embattled state. Hooray!

Sorry but most Georgians have never heard of Dubose Porter. Unfortunately his name reminds us of something like “GOMER PYLE” or “BARNEY FIFE”. Dublin??? And he’s going to save our State?

DuBose Porter is a good, honest man. He is everything that Roy Barnes isn’t, and he is what we need especially when the Casey Cagles of the world are running on the conservative side. Mr. Porter will get my vote – no doubt. You may not have heard of him yet, but you will, and you will be more than impressed.

I was hoping that he would jump in the race. Hadn’t heard that much about him until last year, but I think he is what Georgia needs. Even though his name may not be out as much as some of the other candidates– that’s a good thing. He has done many good things for Georgia with forestry, natural resources, and education. That is only a few. I really thing he is a TRUE BLUE candidate. He is exactly what Georgia needs. To those of you that want to know his accomplishments, do some research. Just searching in google is not adequate research. Just because he has not been in the media, does not mean he has not done anything. It just means that much of the media has been focused on all of the negative things other legislators have been a part of (which there is plenty of).

Dubose is my representative and my longtime friend. As Minority Leader in the Ga. House of Representatives he has been instrumental in leading those who would listen on a pathway of progress for local governments in Ga. He has opposed the present leadership on key issues affecting regular georgians. Always coming down on the side of us common folk. Check his voting record and I think you’ll be impressed.

I think the State of Georgia would do well with a man like DuBose to lead it; certainly the village idiot could do a better job than chicken lips would do or for that matter any of the barnyard fouls that will likely run. Ole Betty says, “Whoopee, we got a winner in the race.”
Surely the mess the legislature made of our economy and the chance of any recovery will open the eyes of some decent Republicans (there must be some with brains and a conscience.)

One word of warning to the Dems. Boys, don’t bite your self in the posterior with in-fighting up to Primary — leave that to the Repugnicans. Betty Boop

I’ll be voting for Porter. I always watch Lawmakers and Rep. Porter is one that everyone can be proud of. Talk about a breath of fresh air.
