A GOP move to prevent Michelle Obama from following in Hillary Clinton’s footsteps

Politico.com says it’s detected a Republican move against Michelle Obama:

House Republicans are pressing for a change in federal law that could force Michelle Obama and future first ladies to do more of their policy work in public. But Democrats warn President Obama may take the attempt personally “as an attack on his wife.”

The GOP effort is being led by the ranking member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), whose initial salvo was rebuffed recently at a contentious committee markup session. Under Issa’s amendment, any government policy group that Mrs. Obama or another first spouse regularly participates in would be subject to a law requiring meetings to be announced in advance and, in most instances, public.

Sounds like an attempt to prevent Michelle Obama from assuming the role that Hillary Clinton did during the first years of her husband’s White House tenure.

Bring it on, Permanent Minority. We can do our business in full view of the public and STILL pass the legislation needed to restore America.

Unlike a certain Darth Cheney, who invoked special secrecy privileges every time he sneezed. And HE was even an elected official!

This is a bunch of racist Republican nothing to do about nothing. This was never sugggested for any Presidents wife. Could this be because this President and his wife are black? These racist, immature, demonic thinkink Republicans need to grow up and stop making every effort to antagonize anything positive about the President and his wife and the Democratric Party. First lady Obama is a very strong and intellegent first lady, as was Hilliary Clinton. It appears the Republicans never had first ladies that meet the stature of these women, due to the men who wed them love intelligent independent women and not women who wanted to be plain housewives and live off them. Now it appears these Republicans want to attempt to stifle the creativity and intelligence of strong Democratic first ladies. What a shame. These Republican appear to be “weak” men who are know looking to start a fight with women. They are so chldish and silly. I wish I could meet them in a dark alley and handle them man to man wit their selfish unchristian ways. I am on God’s side so you know who will win.

High unemployment!
Increasing health care costs!
The highest foreclsure rate since 1929!

And now a GOP rep has time to worry about the first lady duties!

GOP followers that is why we are in this unbelievable mess right now!

Next to Rush Limbaugh, Darrell Issa is the Dems dream spokesperson for the GOP — he’s a hard-right wing-nut who ooozes partisanship.

He’d be right at home in the Georgia GOP which cannot even pass a whimpy resolution honoring Obama as the first black President.

Keep it up — pretty soon the GOP will be known as the ‘angry white-southern male party’ — that’s a fine demographic for a ‘national’ party.

Of course this makes sense – government action should be in full view to the public no matter who the person is, especially the first lady who excerises great influence. There is no valid reason to object to this provision! (Race baiting is not a valid reason)

could care less about race, but as it has been pointed out Congress (and the GA Legislature for that matter) have so many more items that need attention. They’re not even past item 12 and Michelle Obama’s associations is like item number 748. Way down the list of priorities. I guess that’s the smoke you blow up peoples azzes when you don’t have a plan or a clue.

I’ve grown so weary of the use of the race card, that I’ve recently decided I won’t let it stick any longer. You no longer control that word.

The black community cried wolf one too many times.

You can say whatever you like. Call me whatever you like. I do not care. I will not accept your label of “racist” no matter how often you say it.

You brought this on yourselves. Good luck.

Hey Copy, Barry, Keep it Real?, Daedalus, Wow you guys are getting pretty defensive on behalf of the First Lady’ish. What I mean by that is that she looks alot like a guy in drag. Now don’t get all worked up over this and burn your neighborhood down. Some women just don’t have feminine features and Mrs. O is one of them. Now lets talk about the issue at hand. I don’t think that the Republicans are trying to single out Mrs. Osamma. Times have changed and with that come changes that we don’t agree with. I thought you Demogods were all about change?

I watched the History channel about the treason the first ladies did involving Woodrow Wilson and FDR. The first ladies took control of the government away from the vice president. They should be tried posthumously for treason. Any bill that would not allow the first lady to usurp executive powers should immediately be passed.

Could it be that you are mad at something else and taking it out on us? Like other folks have posted, there are so many other issues for Congress to worry about, but Darrell Issa wants to keep track of the First Lady’s activities. First Lady’s have always worked with various organizations and no one’s tried to introduce legislation to track or stop their work. I don’t agree that the suggestion is racist. But it is wrong-headed.

I guess I wouldnt have minded something like this if it were an issue during the previous administration. I mean what is Mrs. Obama doing in private that has this certain politician up in arms. Every time I see Mrs. Obama on TV she is surrounded by children, reading or doing outdoor activities. I understand, she does other things too, but I thought all first ladies had little projects they do to keep busy, and most of it to my knowledge was community service and programs for children. Before I judge I would probably look into it for more details.

It’s not always about RACE, but the majority of the time in racist America, it is. Walk like a duck, quack like a duck, look like a duck, it’s a duck. America is not color blind and never will be. That’s why they refuse to see the caucasian in President Obama because they are too busy looking at the color of his skin. He is 50/50 racist demons & yes, why wait until we get a First Lady of color to decide to make some changes when it could have been done decades ago. YEP, THE RACE CARD, THAT’S WHAT IT IS NO MATTER WHAT YOU IGNORAMUS SAY.

Here come the race baiters with nothing better than to bring up Obama’s race. Since Hillary did the same thing, what is the excuse for that? She’s a woman? Bringing up race is about the lowest and pathetic someone can be. You people have nothing better to do than to harp on race issues at every turn. Racism exists because of you. Merely pointing this out when race was not an issue makes you equal to the Klan and neo-Nazis. Move on bigots.

The real issue is the secrecy Obama has already injected into the White House. He’s already broken so many promises including transparency. His word is not his bond…never was. If he is transparent, what does it hurt to back it up by law? Something to fear? Something to hide? Back up the talk.

Good one Barry; Here we go with the race card again. When are you going to realize that as soon as race is mentioned in any circumstance where race has nothing to do with an issue that you automatically have your comment filed under the “Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson file of publicity for racial issues” and that a good number of rational thinking people, both black and white, dont take your comments seriously. How about the fact that Republicans may want the Obama regime, which includes Michelle, to be as transparent as they claimed they would be in the campaign. This presidency so far has not been remotely transparent. What is wrong with everything being out in the open, and what is racist about it? I would support this idea whether the president was black, white, republican or democrat. Everything is not racism because Obama is black. Might I also point out that he is half white; does anyone remember this? I bet Obama’s mother does.

This is so silly that it’s almost laughable.

First of all, it’s unconstitutional. Why? It’s because being First Lady isn’t an elected office. So a First Lady’s activities should not be monitored by Congress at all.

But what’s even more funny is that this sounds like they are at least tepidly afraid that Michelle Obama may want to seek public office once she leaves the White House.

Craig

Old Dawg and others…your short term memory is kicking in. Read the article and note the example of Hillary. This ‘office’ of being the First Lady holds no true power. So if everything is on the up and up, what does it hurt to keep everything legal and transparent? Liberals wailed and gnashed their teeth about Cheney. And after Hillary, we need to ensure we keep honest people honest. Again, Obama has broken his word on so much other, who’s to say Honest Barry would not use his wife’s office to break more promises?

I bet Barry would pee in his pants if he met anyone in a dark alley. As far as the legislation goes, what are people afraid of if these meetings are made public? What is the First Lady doing behind closed doors that Dems worry about being made public? As far as privacy issues, etc…they gave that up when the First Lady took an active role, as it appears this one has done. Funny, too, how “Barry the Tough Guy” rips on the Republicans, then asks why Republicans do not support Obama. What a good liberal…Never let the facts get in the way of a good story!

Everyone on here talking about race will never understand the real issues going on. Even though I dont support most of what Obama has done so far it’s actually a shame for the Obama presidency that anything he does well or badly will, in some ignorant people’s minds, have a racial undertone to them. He does something good it’s because he is black; he does something bad that gets scrutinized and the people scrutinizing are racist. What a shame

Can someone explain to me what the race card is? To me, it just seems like a code word to try to make Blacks and other minorities ashamed to say something is racism. Let me save you the trouble – it won’t work. Those governement workers in Cobb were accused of playing the race card until some smart lawyers did some digging and found that a public official had a racist video game on his GOVERNMENT ISSUED computer where the object is to KILL MEXICANS “running across the border” into America. So save the race card crap. It won’t work and you will be called out for your racist views.

I guess the GOP is so use to the Laura Bush’s and Sarah Palin’s of the world that they are threatened by an educated, intelligent, passionate, and charasmatic black woman like Michelle Obama. Anyone who doesn’t think this is a racial thing, you must be blinded by the white sheets of your own prejudice and ignorance. Wake up GOP, it’s a new day! THANK U PRESIDENT BUSH for bringing the races closer together. Mr. Bush, you treated all Americans fairly. You didn’t just make the poor poorer, you made the rich poorer. Your policies bankrupted everyone regarless of race, religion, class, gender, sexual orientation and age. You have taught many who thought they were special cause of their pale skin, that they were no better than their hard working darker neighbors. I watched my white and black neighbors lose their homes due to their jobs going over seas. When gas was $5 a gallon, Republicans did not get a discount at the pump. When food prices went up due to the gas prices, ALL AMERICANS paid the price. Thank U Mr. Bush. Unless you are an oil exec or have a company who has a contract to help rebuild Iraq, no one advanced under your policies.

Mr. Bush, your policies were so bad that American elected a black man with a Muslim name without any previous national political friends or family near or in the White House. Thank U Mr. Bush for making history.
