Bryan Dattilo, who plays Lucas on “Days of Our Lives,” will be making a free appearance from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the McDonough Wal-Mart.
He can’t wait.
“It’s the best part of my job,” the 38-year-old soap star said of mixing with the peeps. “It’s nice to meet people who watch the show. In L.A., it’s no big deal. No one cares if you’re on a soap opera. They’re used to seeing movie stars. I get more attention when I travel, and I like it!
“I take pictures, I sign autographs, I kiss babies. Whatever works.”
All righty then!
We have a slight confession: We don’t actually watch soaps – so we reached out to some metro area folks who do. Thanks to Kristi Storey of Marietta and Lindsay Lockery of Roswell for informing the following questions.
Q: What will happen with you and ex-wife Chloe?
A: She breaks my heart. She doesn’t even come to visit me in rehab. (Lucas is back on the booze). She’s too busy with Daniel. She’s all about Daniel. She told Nicole about Sammy’s baby.
Q: Ah, you mean the twins. You’re the father of one and your nemesis E.J. is the father of the other (Leave it to “Days” to be on the cutting edge of science). Do you predict the twins will grow up and perpetuate the feud?
A: That’s thinking long-term. I like it! Job security. You never know whose baby is whose. That’s the catch on our show.
Q: Lucas’ mother Kate has quite a strong personality. What have you learned off screen from teaming up with such a dynamic actress?
A: What have I learned from Lauren Koslow? Anything is possible. There’s no predicting what Lauren’s going to do in a scene. You never know if she’s going to come at you strong. You’ve got to be on your toes. She’s taught me to be in the moment. Plus, she’s hot. I’ve learned that women only get hotter as they get older.
Q: You’ve really matured before viewers’ eyes on this show. How do you keep it fresh after so many years?
A: It’s hard. That’s a big challenge. You always have to prove yourself. No matter how long you’ve worked, if you take a break there’s always something to prove. There’s always that tension. There’s always people who want your job. That motivates you.
Q: Reality television is so popular, and with social media sites anyone can fire up the digital camera and declare him or herself a star. How does daytime drama compete?
A: You have to be that much more on your game against talk shows and reality. What you do as an actor is up the ante and top that.
Q: Did you grow up watching “Days” with someone in your family?
A: My grandmother was the biggest “Days of Our Lives fan.” It was her soap. I used to stay with her in the summer a lot. She used to warn me: do not talk to me while my story is on. She would punish me if I asked questions. I called her and told her I had an interview for “Days of Our Lives.” She cried. She said, I can see you every day! I said, Meme, don’t put that pressure on me.
Q: How has the move to high definition television affected daytime stars?
A: It can help and it can hurt. When people meet me they say, oh you look so good. They say the camera adds 10 pounds. The hi-def way sort of leans you out. It’s also cleaner. You have to get your rest. You have to party less. You have to honor that. People don’t want to see somebody who looks like they’ve been run over. With me, it’s been an excuse to get back into great shape. I had put on some weight, eating fast food with my son.
Q: What’s your fast food weakness?
A: French fries, oh my God, and milkshakes. Milkshakes are my substitute for ketchup. I like to dunk.
Q: You’re going to fit in great down South.
A: I can’t wait. If you come to the signing, you have to hook me up.
(Kristi? Lindsay? Are you listening?)
