BET Hip-Hop Awards 2009 arrive in Atlanta
The 4th annual BEt Hip-Hop Awards being taped in Atlanta today (Hyosub Shin/AJC).
Skies might have been overcast but on the red carpet at the BET Hip-Hop Awards Saturday afternoon at the Civic Center, things were decidedly sunny.
Helping matters, the red carpet was protected under a massive white tent for the first time.
And elbow room on the tight red carpet was scarce as dozens of media outlets got into position with TV cameras, boom microphones, tripods and cameras.
As Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Starting Something,” the stars began exiting limos on Piedmont Avenue, which was blocked off and reinforced with police. Security and metal detectors made it feel like a miniature Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.
Hosted by Mike Epps, the annual awards show will be edited and then broadcast at 8 p.m. Oct. 27 on BET.
Among the nominees likely strolling the carpet at this year’s event: Lil Wayne, Bobby Valentino, Rihanna, John Legend, Young Jeezy, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Diddy, Soulja Boy Tell’em, Drake, Busta Rhymes, Eminem and Kid Cudi.

That explains the obscene amount of ‘24 inch rims on the cars parked in front the “W” in Midtown for today. At first glance, I thought maybe the King family were finally being civil to each other and discussing their greed under one roof. Instead, the Hip Hop crowd are in town to celebrate their new found wealth. Earned off the backs of younger people that idolize them for no reason. How delightful.

It’s not just “entertainment”. This music promotes thuggery, lawlessness, is misogynist, and is detrimental to our communities, particularly the black community. It’s really sad that there’s an attempt to devalue the city of Atlanta by no longer referring to it as the civil rights capital of the world, but as the “hip-hop capital” of the world.

I wish I were there. I’ve worked with a lot of entertainers, jazz artists, rappers, r&b singers, gospel singers, rockers, etc. I find that all of them have their bad boys. Hip Hop’s got some too. And there’s more to hip hop than it’s music. There is a soul to it. You must understand it’s soul to understand it’s people. No different than the blues.

Gucci man performed at the Bet awards 4 times, and his hit song is called “lets all get wasted. Level with me people, is that really hip-hop. I know some fool will point to Kanye and say, well he is hip-hop; but for every one Kanye their are 500 Gucci Men. Now to any reasonable person you know the truth.
