Tyrone’s Sandy Creek High School Mens’ Ensemble chorus members and their director Millie Turekwere a little sleep-deprived Wednesday morning as they tuned into B98.5 FM.
They were also $1,000 in prize money closer to attending a spring choral competition in San Francisco in 2010, thanks to Steve McCoy and Vikki Locke’s B98.5 FM’s “Glee” contest.
The Sandy Creek seniors beat out other area show choirs in the competition tied in the new hit Fox series “Glee.”
The guys in the group — lead singer Jesse Alexander, first tenor Tyler Green, second tenor Aaron Biemiller, first bass Anthony Spezzano and second bass singers Chad Sims and Paul Merrill –won for their music video acapella cover of Billy Joel’s “The Longest Time” filmed around school recently with chorus pal Stephanie Earle.
“They’re all very happy today,” Turek told us. “They played it on the morning announcements. I have the best kids, period.”
Turek tells us that she and her singing students are also “Glee” viewers each Wednesday night on Fox.
“It’s a parody of my life,” she explained laughing. “I love it, even in its most absurd moments. My husband’s a cop. He has lots of TV shows to choose from. But ‘Glee’ is the only show on television where a music teacher gets to be the hero!”

How wonderful to see the arts recognized in our local schools. As a teacher’s spouse, I am happy to see that this a teacher is going to be recognized for the obvious amount of time spent with these kids outside of the classroom. Congratulations Sandy Creek High School! I just about gag and then turn the channel every time that stupid hand segment with that arrogant twit sports reporter appears on Fox 5. Stupid, stupid, stupid. THANK YOU B98.5 for seeing that talent in today’s youth can and does, reach outside of the gym and/or football field.
