Atlantans were blowing up Facebook and Twitter Tuesday as fast as their thumbs could type about seeing U2 lead singer Bono seemingly everywhere in Atlanta.
Tweeted the folks at the Atlanta Website MetroMix: “Bono sighting by Metromix at the Starbucks at Colony Square. Couldn’t snag a pic!”
The singer, in town for a show Tuesday night at the Georgia Dome, was allegedly also spotted at a Waffle House Duluth Tuesday.
In reality, it was brand-new Dave FM morning man Jimmy Baron in a limo with Atlanta house painter Barry Burden, a guy who makes his living as a Bono impersonator.
A crowd of about 50 U2 fans clustered around Baron and Burden as they sat at a table at Colony Square Tuesday at noontime.
“It looked like I was interviewing him,” Baron said. “But I was actually asking how much it would cost to paint my office.”
When Baron left Burden sitting at the table alone, fans kept busy taking cellphone pictures until one brave guy finally approached Burden, followed by a small swarm of autograph seekers and photo takers.
Apparently, some U2 fans caught onto to the ruse (the real Bono currently has a buzzcut while Burden maintains the iconic Bono slicked back look).
Posted one Dave FM listener on Baron’s Facebook page: “It looks like Bono’s put on a few pounds.”
Explained Baron: “Yeah, I had to break that to Barry.”
