The icing on the cake? Another ‘Housewives’ catfight

Highland Bakery sugar artist Karen Portaleo had mixed feelings after viewing Thursday night’s episode of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.”

Portaleo tuned in to see the footage of her gorgeous “Independence” cake she created for “Housewives” cast member Sheree Whitfield who threw herself a party at Midtown’s Door 44 nightclub, following her divorce from NFL star hubby Bob Whitfield.

But naturally, the beauty of Portaleo’s creation and the evening in general were marred by a series of catfights that erupted between “Housewives” Kim Zolciak and NeNe Leakes. The normally reserved newest cast member Kandi Burruss was even drawn into the altercation.

“Oh, my God, I made my mom and dad watch this trashy show tonight!” said Portaleo in a late night call to Buzz Central following the broadcast. “Andy Warhol may have exaggerated. I don’t think I was actually on for more than a few seconds. But I’m going to count it!”cake02

Portaleo was invited by Whitfield to stay and serve the cake at the party, which was probably a wise move considering some of the requested ingredients from the divorcee.

The tiered cake was a ball and chain with a opened cuff and purple butterflies flying off. The cuff contained real rhinestones.

“Sheree was very cool,” recalled Portaleo who created the confection early this spring. “She just told me, ‘I want this cake to be fabulous! And lots of bling. I’m a fashion designer. I want it covered in bling!’ ”

The sugar artist tells us similar cakes at the Highland Bakery usually serve between 150 to 180 folks and run between $1,200 to $1,500 a piece.

And yes, Portaleo was still present when the fight erupted between Zolciak and Leakes after the alleged singer backtracked on a plan to turn her dance single “Tardy for the Party” into a duet with Leakes.

“My opinion?” Leakes told Zolciak. “You can’t sell the song without me. Because of who I am, my personality, everything that has to do with me. More people would buy the song if I was on it.”

Later, Leakes got in Burress’ face for overseeing the recording of the song, prompting the usually quiet singer to caution Leakes: “Bring it down, BRING IT DOWN!”

Whitfield’s response: “Not tonight, ladies. Not on my night!”cake03

“I remember all that yelling and screaming,”  Portaleo recalled. “It was fascinating to observe. People were very quick to step up to the cameras to give their opinion of the fight. It was a little like watching ‘The Wave’ at a sporting event. As the camera panned the room, people got very excited and animated. But when the cameras weren’t pointed at them, the energy subsided quickly. I’m just grateful no one choked on a rhinestone!”

KDJ…I agree wholeheartedly. If a business is willing to support this debacle of a show, advocating such deplorable behavior by using it as an avenue to generate more business for themselves, they need to realize that some of their customers…past, present and what would have been future…will choose to take their business elsewhere.

Come on guys, it’s just a tv show. Off camera NeNe said she has camera balls!!! That shows me that they only act a fool when the camera is pointing at them. She was wrong to do that to Kim. She should just accept that she doesn’t want her to sing on her cd. It’s not that big of a deal. Sheree, i love the cake. When i got divorced i had something similiar. Ten of my friends for a weekend trip, limo rides, and vip in the clubs of Toronto. It was the best!!! Celebrate girl, and damn the haters!!! They keep us on top!! Holla!!!!!

The cake was beautiful. Not sure how many Independence Party Sherree is having. Thought she had one last season. And the potrait, are you serious? How vain can you be? You can see on the artist face that he was only doing this for the publicity. It looked as if Sherree got on his nerves.

Anyhow, the “fame” has gotten to NeNe’s head. She is not a tell it like it is person, she is just a mean, vindictive, jealous bully. NeNe was back and forth on singing the song with Kim. So what she didn’t want to sing with you. NeNe said she wasn’t a singer and Kim it was a dream to become a singer. NeNe is just upset because she is not apart of something potentially good for someone else. Her comments alone shows her true colors. NeNe should not have dragged Kandi into the nonsense she and Kim has.

I don’t know if anyone noticed but Lisa is an instigator (spell check). She is just out to get anyone against Kim. Other than Kandi, I am not a big fan of any of these girls. The fights and agruements they have are so high school.

A applaud Kandi for trying to get NeNe to lower her voice and eventually walking away.

Don’t hate on the cake baker! She was hired to do a job. Regarding the show, folks, it’s entertainment (for some people) and nothing more. I think people put too much thought into how it makes Atlanta “look.” It would have been a poor business decision for the bakery not to do the show, it’s great exposure and shows off the baker’s skills as a cake designer to a huge audience. Some people need escapism in their life and tune in to reality shows like that to escape reality (gosh that’s kinda funny). Boycott companies that club baby seals for their furs and produce cigarettes, not the Highlands Bakery!!

Nene looked like she was already on a drug! She IS a bully who manipulates people around her to get her own way. When she is unable to intimidate someone(Kandi) she just sticks her face closer and escalates the volume. She was out of control last night. I’ll bet when the rage left her she became almost childlike..Nene has some serious mental health problems that could get her in real trouble legally if not addressed.
Sheree makes me uncomfartable just to watch her…I rarely see someone so shallow & uncaring about other people’s feelings. Sheree does not have a clue how she comes off to others…living in her small “Sheree world”.
Kim, get a clue…Nene is not your friend now or ever. She hides her true self…you saw a little bit of it at the party.

As a business owner, it is appalling that people would stop supporting a business because a business is doing business. No matter what you people think of the “housewives”, they have a right to buy anything from a business. If you truly support a business, and then get angry because someone else wants to enjoy the same, then good riddance! Ihad never heard of that bakery, but they will be getting my support, because the creation of that cake was beautiful. If everyone held to such an immature, and controlling stance, then no one should purchase anything from a fuel station or grocery center because they sell cigarettes and alcohol. No one should ever seek medical care because of major medical errors. The comments about boycotting that bakery are just plan stupid! For the few who do boycott a because a business is trying to maintain its financial standing, at least 3x that number will become new, faithful and true patrons!

I agree that the cake was beautiful and classy. Too bad I can’t say the same thing about the attitudes of some of these women. I believe that Kandi and Lisa, are two of the more classier, productive females on the show, and although Nene, Sheree, and Kim act ignorant, shallow, petty and money hungry, I believe that 40% of how they act, is just an act for the camera’s. (except for NeNe, I think she’s probably that ignorant all the time.) Honestly, what’s up with that big ass protrait of Sheree? If that isn’t the definition of narcissism, I don’t know what is. Where would you put something like that anyway? I think it’s funny that the people that classify this show as “trash Tv,” are the same one’s that watch it religiously every week. I think it’s also funny that some people are actually willing to change their lives and “boycott” certain businesses & restuarants simply because these woman use them. I know their attitudes are embarrassing and unbecoming, but really….is it that serious?? It’s just a TV show. If you’re sticking to that “brilliant” boycott idea, you must be really familar with the sales at Walmart, and the menu’s at Burger King and Mcdonald’s, cause those are the only places you won’t find them.

Business Owner- your post is overly simplistic and wrong. As a “business owner” you should understand that your customers are in control over where to spend their money. There is NO inalienable right of a business to have customers. For a business that caters to high end clientele where image is as important as services, it is very risky to associate yourself with a show that is by its very nature trashy. You may be right that they will get 3x the business from that cake, but I highly doubt that people who are purchasing $1500 cakes are being influenced for the positive by Sheree and Nene. I certainly would like to know what your “business” is, because with that attitude I would not want to patronize it.

JC-25: Of course it is just a trashy TV show, and there in lies the entertainment value. People love train wrecks. The cake was beautiful. It was unfortunate that the party was over shadowed by the controversy. And Daniel, you’re wrong. Business owners have no control over who comes in to patronize their business. If they’re a buyer and their intention isn’t to harm anyone…why not sell to them. Unfortunately, these aren’t the most respectable examples of black women that we see on television. However, they do have influence and people do watch their show to see what they’re wearing, where they’re going and whay they’re doing. It’s just the nature oft he business. And as far as hoodtechie, if you’re African American you should be ashamed to even post such comments about your own race. There are plenty of black women with substance and character. And I pray that your son grows up to understand and realize that what you’re teaching is pure ignorance and racism.

JC-25

Hoodtechie: I have news for you. That’s not just black women, that’s most women and general. Don’t allow what you see on TV to further perpetuate any negative stereotypes or personal hangups that you might have with another race. Don’t allow those hangups to taint your kids own personal opinions and views. That’s no better than the KKK spreading their hatred from one generation to the next. Open your mind, and U might learn something.

Oh yea, and Daniel: I agree with you. It’s a train wreck that everybody wants to see, but, it is what it is. If people are gonna complain about it and they don’t like it, then don’t watch it. simple as that.

Daniel, first of all,you sound as if you have a personal vendetta. Are you Ms. Portaleo’s competition? She took a risk and it paid off, and will continue to pay off. How did it pay off? It showcased HER talent and creativity. She appeared on that show not as a friend to any of the “housewives”,BUT to highlight her skills. As for your comment about clientele who would no longer patronize a business because of an “image”, it shows that they need to strenghten their self-esteem and not find it in others! You have the right to not patronize anything that you choose. You are one person and the world does not revolve around you.

i completely agree with business owner. there are many businesses that people patronize who have ties that we may not agree with. do the people that boycott the businesses on this show also boycott kraft foods? i hope so, because kraft foods owns phillip morris, the cigarette company. i hope they also boycott odwalla drinks. because odwalla is owned by coca-cola, and coca-cola is known for promoting high sugar drinks to children and helping in childhood obesity.
these jerks should stop taking themselves so seriously. my friend got her daughter’s cake made by this baker last year and the cake was fantastic. she is also planning to hire her again this year. for those of you that are so snooty and judgemental, i’d rather not wait in line next to you at my favorite eateries anyway.

Nurseypooh- I am not wrong. Of course she has the “right” to sell to anyone, but obviously by appearing on the show and then calling the AJC to report her shock, she agreed to PARTICIPATE in the show, which is quite different than just selling someone a cake.

Business Owner- I do not make cakes nor am I in the market for high end cakes. You may disdain the attitudes of people who spend $1500 on a cake because to them image is important that is fine. But, her business is based on those type of people who spend on extravagant items. Of course the world does not revolve around me, but a business that I patronize should treat me as if their business does. It was YOUR attitude that customers who choose where and with whom to spend their money are “appalling” that is so disturbing to me. I say again with that attitude I would certainly not do busy with you.

Look Highland Bakery, you should have known what kind of show this was when you decided to do the cake!! Your cake has nothing to do with the show–except give you some great publicity. I thought the cake looked good, but I would have second thoughts about patronizing you because now you are dogging out your customer.
Kim is a manipulative, homewrecker. She says she doesn’t mind “messing with” a married man because the marriage is just a piece of paper. If that’s the case then why isn’t he divorced!!! Kim, you are such a dumb blonde who is only concerned with yourself. You and Nene were friends and you went back on your word simply because Kandi stepped in and made this song a hit. I don’t blame Nene for getting mad. And, Kandi is no saint either. She is quick to say that Nene is ghetto well, she was getting just a loud as Nene and she only walked away because she knew she didn’t want to fight Nene–give me a break. Kandi, you do need to leave the show–you are too self-righteous!!!! I may stop watching the show also. I don’t care for Kandi at all!!!

I mean to each his/her own but it seems rather STUPID to quit supporting a business whose products and/or services you have obviously enjoyed in the past, simply because they sell their product to some people you don’t like. You act as if this woman has done something immoral or illegal. Give me a break!!!

I don’t understand why the bakery didn’t do their research on RHOA before appearing on the show. I must admit last night’s show was a bit more “trashy” than some of the previous shows; however, the baker should have done more to find out about the show. If you are approached by someone that has a TV show and they tell you your product is going to be on national TV, wouldn’t you at least try to find out more about what kind of show it is. Had the baker done her research, she would have had enough time to decide if she wanted to participate in the “trash,” and would have made a better informed business decision. I mean, isn’t that how a lot of people are going to from now on recognize her and the bakery? “Oh, I saw your cake on the Real Housewives of Atlanta!” I’m sure the baker may have been seeing potential dollar signs in her eyes instead of the reality behind the show’s concept and characters. Next time, do your research and you wouldn’t have to subject your family or business to something that may not be up to your standards!

From a black mother who is so ashamed of herself that she wants her son to choose some other race for a mate to the people who want to boycott the baker for doing her job. The cake was magnificent and I am sure that all the people who are boycotting the baker, has just made her a very rich woman. And to the black mother who wants to rule her son, she should first make sure he becomes a good man for any woman her chooses. Michelle Obama, is black, Maya Angelou is black, Toni Morrison is black, etc, these are all great black women and I am sure there are more being groomed today to take their place in society. There has always been good black women & trashy black women, just like the rest of society. I would not want my son to marry a conniving, hateful, sleazy, woman no matter what race. Bottom line, this show is entertainment and everyone is getting paid. Bebe, Missy and PnR:

All of your responses which are so full of thoughtful and articulate language suggest a lot about your character. You don’t have to agree with me, but I have not called anyone a name, nor used profanity. I hope that you all have a nice weekend and find a healthy way to lose some of that anger. It is very unbecoming.

Sheree Whitfield, in order for to truly free yourself from your past marriage you must stop using former NFL star hubby Bob Whitfield, name and image in your life. I am a divorcee. I have been divorced 12 years. You make yourself into a professional victim when you hold former NFL star hubby Bob Whitfield in such low regards, even if he deserves it. If you want to truly be the beautiful woman that you are stop using former NFL star hubby Bob Whitfield as advertisement, an excuse, or anything else. That was the mistake that Whitney Houston made. No one cares who was at fault in someone’s marriage. When whitney went on Opra’s show and bad mouth Bobby Brown, she thought that would be a pink victim’s pass back into the lime light. She was wrong and so are you. You only show the world what kind of person you are and what kind of sould you have when you continue to mention former NFL star Bob Whitfield name……..I mean no disrespect. Forgive me for being honest ….

Doann- your response to Ms. Portaleo is exactly the point that I have been trying to make. It is obvious that she knows what goes on with the show, she agreed to be on it, and she called the AJC to react with shock and awe. She is looking for media attention by both attaching herself to the show and then condeming at the same time. I find that much worse than the housewives who as many have stated are probably just “playing a part” for ratings. Nice to see that someone else is paying attention.

The broads are garbage. They are a poor example of southern ladies. Bravo chose these clowns for rating only. They found the dumbest, loudest, animated, gold diggin, trashy, and ego driven women to make a spectacle of themselves. Unfortunately they have the country thinking that the women here are rich trash or golddigging tricks. I watched that show and thought my mom would be discusted to see this mess. World this is not an example of Atlanta women. These clowns are transients.

Hey Simpson Road Scholar: Well, Kandi is NOT a transient, she was born and raised in the ATL. She admitted to watching the show last season and agreed to be on the show anyway. Believe me , she is no less ghetto than the rest of them. And, by the way, when is the last time you heard her singing on the radio before she was on this show???–twenty years ago!

Although the cake was beautiful, it did not look moist at all. It appeared the slices were crumbling b/c the person cutting didn’t know how to handle it. And now we know the baker served it. Well then. $1500? Not impressed.

And by the way the AJC supports the show because they write about it every week and feature all of the ladies on show in different articles. There’s another reason you should not be on this web site. So since you can’t beat us join us! After all your still reading. Are you not?

I have been a regular guest of the Highland Bakery for the past three years. The food and service is always consistent. I have never had a bad meal or tried something on the menu that wasn’t absolutely delicious. As for not going to the restaurant comments from Daniel, I’m so glad that I won’t have to wait in line behind you after church this Sunday. Thanks for saving me a little time.
By the way, the cakes that I’ve ordered were WAY less than $1,500 (around $100.00) and were very moist and absolutely delicious. We did my parents anniversary cake last spring and anytime an event comes up, it’s always an automatic to order our cake from the Highland Bakery. The cake is just like the food in the restaurant- ALWAYS consistent and delicious.

Some people are funny to me!! You are going to boycott every establishment associated with the show??? So that means you should boycott Atlanta! Don’t stop there – boycott Georgia!!! Yet you and your friends must watch the show decide what businesses to boycott!? Genius. Pure Genius.

Just how snotty and obnoxious does a person have to be in order to boycott a business just because they made a fantastic cake that appeared on a T.V. show? Do you boycott all consumer products that appear on shows you don’t like or favor? Sounds like the Atlanta Housewives is missing one snotty, self-righteous, narcissistic, self-absorbed, all-too-special brat from your comment. You should audition to be on next season’s show to let everyone see how low-class should REALLY be done in Atlanta.

Team Kandi. For all her faults, Kim does immediately disengage herself from fights. She left NeNe standing there looking like a fool! But NeNe kept going like the Energizer Bunny. Did anyone that one of NeNe’s eyes looked a bit droopy at the party? Send Tania Home. Dwight should have been at the party.

This show is histerical. It just goes to show, that you money don’t alway buy you happiness. To the cake designer…it looked great. but I know from experience that a lot of cakes that look good don’t necessarily taste that good. Remember Kim’s daughter’s bday party with the bogus planner in season 1. Her caked sucked.
The idea behind most reality t.v sows today (and there are alooooot of them) is to keep up the ratings for the network snd make money. Noone had even heard of these ladies prior to this show. They are all trying to get a business jumpstarted in some form or fashion – is NeNe tinking of going into photograpy?? In any manner they do what they have to to keep those lifestyles….hey we are all in a “recession” and we all need the exposure. As far as Kim and NeNe goes well two wrongs don’t make a right. What can I say about Sheree she tries so hard to be something she is not…just be yourself girl people will love you for who you are not the image you provide them with. I’m sure all these ladies are somewhat different in person but we won’t ever know that. Rumors fly like the wind and they are all the buzz here in Atlanta.Only advice I have is to live life don’t let other people live if for you because you will only end up with sorrow and years of regret that you will never get back.

Interesting responses, So would you then boycott the advertisers who sponsor the show? i agree with other posters, it is simply a t.v show, if you don’t like it turn the channel, but most of you will continue to watch it and complain, thats so funny to me. Now who needs the help, lol.

Word of advice to those who don’t like the show, if you all stop watching it, the ratings will go down and then it will cancel, but you all are addicted to the show and are not strong enough to admit, get some help. Its been at least 8 episodes all ready and you haven’t decided not to watch the show, you are not gonna stop.

Wow, NeNe was my favorite last season. She’s is the type of girl that can woo you in for the back stab!!! Khandi – good for you! You’re a real lady. Your definition of ghetto (state of mind+being) was on point. Kim do all that you can to leglize the use of the song for you.

Can someone tell me when there will be a reality show featuring mature blacks? I get so sick and tired of seeing the same mess screaming and hollering, trash talking women, fighting in the street, he said, she said and all for the sake of 2 mins of fame and some money. I mean really, why do we fall prey for this? You mean to tell me that’s all that’s in ATL? Frankie and Neffie Hot mess and ghetto, ATL Housewives Hot mess and Ghetto. This show is a embarrassment and I can’t believe this is the best they could come up with in all of ATL. Sad!

OMG its just a tv show…some people are taking this way to seriously! If you dont like the show and you think its trashy I have a great solution…TURN THE CHANNEL! No one is forcing you to watch it…I watch it and just laugh. Its simply entertainment and thats all it is. I cant believe people are talking about boycotting any business associated with the show. I thought we were in America were everyone should be treated equally. What would happen if we start boycotting businesses that sell to blacks or whites or women or men I mean come on…that is very ignorant and childish. Its obvious you were never a real customer in the first place. As for the mother who is teaching her son not to date black women, that is very sad. LustyGrama put it very well. There are some ignorant black women and there are some ignorant white women. You should be teaching him to find a respectable, trustworthy, honest god fearing women. No matter what the race! Also Everydayjane you rock! Couldnt have said it better!

I am not a business person, but I would definitely patronize Highland Bakery. The way these women portrayed themselves is not unusual. The Baker is not responsible for women acting like alley cats. As a matter of fact the next time my husband and I visit the Highland Tap, we will be sure to visit Highland Bakery as well. P.S. prior to the show I did not know about Highland Bakery.

And to all of you find it so shocking that a lot of us feel the need to boycott establishments featured in the show … of course you wouldn’t understand … “it’s all just TV … turn the channel” … of course. You obviously do not have the class and can’t understand those of us who have chosen Atlanta as our homes, those of us who have lived here for over 40 years and appreciate all the city has to offer. To promote themselves as “real housewives of Atlanta” is a monster joke. We take our city seriously and love so many things about the real Atlanta, the history, the diversity, the nostalgia. For five women to portray this town the way they do is what we are upset about — but then, again, you wouldn’t understand. I’m sure your lives are all about texting, Jello shots at sports bars, and racking up debt you have no intenting of paying. We know all about you. We just hate that you are in this city with this.

Why does anyone continue to give credibility to this foolishness. First of all, only two of the women are married. Secondly, men are the ones who should really be up in arms. It has always been rumored the majority of men in Atlanta, Black and White, are gay. In this show the time I watched the all the men were gay except the two husbands. The Black gay men are so over the top it is an insult. This is no more than a day at the circus.

Hoodtechie, It’s your son’s lost not the black woman’s. There will always be a guy(black or white) who would gladly date the many smart, educated, respectful black women in this world. It seems to me that you had this hate for black women before the show maybe stemming from your self hatred(if you’re black) and I highly suggest you get help for that because you are only depriving yourself sweety. Best of wishes to you.

The show on the other hand is a little over the top but people should be able to draw their conclusions about people from having some sort of face to face, personal interaction with that person. When did TV start becoming the judge and jury of how a certain race or gender is. People get it together and get some common sense about yourselves. Yall sitting behind yall computers mad as I don’t know what over this tv show that is meant basically for entertainment(it’s not CNN people) and in the mean time, these ladies are getting richer. You think they care about what yall faceless people care about them?

Interesting people here. For all the complaining commenters: If you owned a small business, I would bet that not one of you would turn down $1500 in revenues and a chance to have your best work featured on a (surprisingly) popular television show. Especially in the current economic times, if you get the opportunity to earn money by any moral means, you should make the money. Noone says that she (or any of the other local businesses seen on the show) actually supports the foolishness that is RHOA. They are beneficiaries, perhaps the only good thing about the show at all.

Cake lady. You got mad skills.

“Independance Party”????? My left toe. Sheree wouldn’t be able to do anything without Bob Whitfield’s money.

NeNe is the real ghetto one.

Kim is in denial about who her real friends are and she, like Sheree, wouldn’t be where she is if it wasn’t for a man.

Lisa is cool with me and fine too. ; )

Kandi is ATL country, but that is cool with me. She is probably the most down-to-earth out of all the women and really needs to leave this show ASAP if she want any chance of getting her career back.

WOW!! You people are hilarious. I just stumbled across this article and having read the comments posted I cannot decide who’s worse, the over-the-top drama ladies of Housewives or the hypocritical petty people of Atlanta (who really need to go off their soap box). I watched the show a few times in the first season and decided it wasn’t for me, which doesn’t mean I have the right to ban, boycott, or whatever anyone who stars, works or appears on that show. That is just stupid, like most of the comments I have read. If you hate the show so much just DON”T WATCH IT! It’s not rocket science.
These are hard times for everyone and I think that the idiots, like KDJ, should wake up and smell the recession. And btw KDJ, you say you boycott the restaurants shown on the show but how do you know which restauarants are shown? You must watch the show or keep up with it somehow. Hi kettle, meet your friend black.
But I also want to thank you for reminding me that Atlanta is a great city not defined by a tv show, but by it’s history and it’s people. If you allow it to be defined by it then you are no better than the one’s you judge. So let them eat cake!!!!! (Which I’m doing as I type this. It’s from Highland Bakery and it’s damn good!!!!)

That’s just stupid to boycott someone’s business because their product appeared on the show, how is the service provider supposed to be responsible for the behavior or gathering of people they don’t know, duh. The people who take any of this seriously there is a problem with you, this show is for ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY. They do not represent Atlanta Housewives, me as a black woman, they only represent themselves however good or bad.
