Sinatra surprises guests at ‘Come Fly With Me’ premiere

Perhaps the biggest surprise at Wednesday night’s world premiere of Twyla Tharp’s new musical “Come Fly With Me,” based on the work of Frank Sinatra, was saved for the show’s final curtain call.

Tharp brought a teary Nancy Sinatra on stage with her as the opening night crowd gave the show a standing ovation.

The show fuses Sinatra’s classic vocals of more than two dozen of Nancy’s dad’s classic hits, with a live big band and Tharp’s ground-breaking choreography.

Moments before she walked out on stage, a clearly moved Sinatra whispered to Tharp, “I wish my father were here to see this.”

Replied Tharp: “He is.”

Before the performance, the former 60s pop siren who turned “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’ ” into an anthem for multiple generations, happily attended an Alliance donor dinner.

“She is just the most down to earth, cool icon,” Alliance artistic director Susan V. Booth told Buzz.

And for a generation of boys who had Nancy Sinatra posters on their walls, the pop star’s effect hasn’t dulled over the decades.

“There were several adult men who were quaking when she walked in,” Booth said. “I mean, titans of industry were coming up to me and asking, ‘Do you think you could introduce me to Nancy?’ It was a thing of beauty!”

Booth is also excited that Tharp’s latest show (her previous show “Movin’ Out,” based on the songs of Billy Joel, was a huge Broadway hit and has become a successful touring production as well) got its creative start at the Alliance. The Tony Award-winning theater has also hosted the world premieres of “Aida,” “The Color Purple” and “Sister Act.”

“It’s a ginormous privilege to play host to such a show and such an artist,” Booth reflected. “It’s also thrilling to know that down the street at the Fox is Fantasia starring in ‘The Color Purple,’ ‘Sister Act’ is running in the West End of London all on the same night as the world premiere of Twyla Tharp’s new show at the Alliance is just amazing. I’m proud that Atlanta gets to own the birth of this piece.”

When is the musical “Come Fly With Me,” coming to L.A. or Ventura, Califorina? Please advise. We were able to see it in Atlanta and want to see it here!
