In a preview of next week’s interview, Oprah Winfrey revealed Thursday morning on “Good Morning America” that it was Cissy Houston, the woman who brought daughter Whitney Houston into the music business who threatened to take her out of the industry at the height of her battle with drugs.
During a live interview from the Chicago set of her talk show, Winfrey told Diane Sawyer that it was Cissy Houston who turned up at the house her daughter shared with now ex-husband Bobby Brown with a court injunction and sheriffs in tow.
In a clip from the two-part interview that will air on “Oprah” next Monday and Tuesday, Houston recalled the incident saying, “My mother had the court paper in her hand and said ‘You do this my way or not at all. We’ll go on TV and you’ll retire.’ ”
Houston also recalled what her mother told a nervous looking Bobby Brown as the sheriffs gathered around them.
According to Whitney Houston her mother told Brown: “If you move Bobby, they’re going to take you down.”
The move by Cissy Houston, who first hired her daughter to sing back up for her in the early 1980s and was there the night music mogul Clive Davis first heard her daughter sing, was a last ditch attempt to get Whitney into drug rehab.
The family intervention worked and the troubled singer tells Winfrey she went to rehab. It was unclear during the “GMA” segment when the intervention took place and if it was while the couple resided in Country Club of the South here.
According to the singer, Cissy Houston told her: “I’m not going to lose you to the world. I’m not going to lose you to Satan. I want my daughter back. I want to see that glow in your eye again.”
Last week, Cissy Houston was seated in the front row at Whitney’s “GMA” comeback concert.
Winfrey also brought along a clip from her upcoming interview with ESPN corespondent and Atlantan Erin Andrews who was the victim of a peeping tom earlier this year.
With her parents seated in the front row, Andrews recalled to Winfrey the phone call she made after discovering nude hotel room video of her taken without her knowledge was plastered on the Internet.
Says Andrews: “They thought I was physically injured, that’s how badly I was screaming. I was screaming, ‘I’m done! My career is over! Get it off! Get if off the Internet!’ ”
Andrews interview will air Friday on “Oprah.”

As Bill Cosby has always said “it’s called tough love”. I admire Ms Cissy Houston for intervening for her daughter. I wish others could provide tough love. We always want to jail the dealers but if we focus on demanding less then the supplier will have to find something else. If we allow the authority to catch the bad people, let’s get our families away from the bad people and get them off of these drugs. I know its easier said than done, but if one can do it, then so can another, then another…..

Bobby Brown was the downfall for Whitney, and he changed her completely. Men can do that to women who are looking for someone to love them. She didn’t even mind that Brown’s family were constant free loaders in their home. The house was always full of them taking advantage of Whitney. I am glad that Sissy took control, that is what a loving mother does. I was on the verge of doing that for my daughter several years ago, but she pulled herself out, Thank God. It hurts to see them in the state that they are in, and they are adults, and you don’t want to interfere in their lives, but you want to. Thanks Sissy for being a strong woman, and loving your daughter that much.

Sorry 2mitzymy but it was probably the reverse. Whitney was doing drugs for years, long before she even knew Bobby. Yeah, he was a bad boy, but she only had the image of a good girl. I’m glad her mom finally stepped in, but it should’ve been done years ago. Whitney was doing drugs in the 80’s.

This story makes no sense.
1. How would Cissy make Whitney retire? By going on tv and saying that Whitney has a drug problem? Well, duh, everybody already knew that, so that threat is pointless.
2. Why are the cops going to “take down” Bobby if he moves? If they’re there to take Whitney to rehab, what do they care if Bobby runs away? Or were they worried he would try to physically stop them from taking Whitney away? Obviously, that wouldn’t work.

God speed to Whitney and daughter but to say Bobby Brown was the cause of her downfall is unfair and untrue. Please remember this chic is from NEWARK. My aunt used to work as her personal assistant back in the early 90s, Whitney was and always has been as hood as they come. Don’t be fooled by the bubblegum image Clive Davis marketed to Americans. God speed to she and her daughter, though. I pray this isn’t a farce and that she is really getting the help she needs.

You go Mama Cissy! Thank God that you were willing to go to the mat to reclaim Whitney- drugs is a terrible scourge and it is an equal opportunity taker- doesnt matter if you’re rich or poor.
The fact is that with her family’s love and her faith, she found her way- the worse thing that we can do to someone who is trying to change their life is to judge them. remember, there but for the grace of God go I.
Can’t wait to see the interview, got the cd- it’s very good. I see why she is singing the song, ‘I look to you’ that is obviously to her mom and God.

@Uncle tom- It is clear what Cissy meant- spouses have more control/power/say about their other half than their parents- she is obviously pre-empting him from trying to stop her from getting Whitney ou of the house and into rehap. obviously, if Mr. Brown cared about his wife or wanted to make a difference in his own life, he would have gotten her help a long time ago and he would have gotten himself help as well.
Last time I checked, Bobby Brown has not entered anytype of rehab facility, he still claims that he doens’t use drugs, he just got a new warrant out for unpaid child support and he just had his what 6th child- please.
Luv you Cissy- all parents need to take this tough love approach- its clear that at this point, she didn’t care about media or what anyone else thought.

I will always know that Whitney is a great singer. I think she got involved in drugs and did not realize the impact. I am so glad her mother stepped up and got her the help she needed. Bobby was a distraction. She loved his with all she had until she realized he was not good for her. He has a standing warrant in New Jersey for non payment of child support. I am glad she is away from him. He can go live with the video vixen and live off her little money. You know she is no longer with Bill Maher and spending his money. I wish Whitnet the best and to the ones that do not like Oprah. Set you broke behind down and be quite. Oprah can teach us a lot. what do you have to offer?

I’m no Bobby Brown but I am a Whitney Houston fan and sounds like this is the classic case of the woman choosing the wrong man and not listening to her familiy and friends. Everyone knew Bobby Brown was a thug long before they even started dating couple that with a failing career at the time of marriage you have to lay a good deal of blame on Whitney for making a awful hoice (not to mention the dude is but Ugly)…remember she wasn’t on skid-row at the time. I really get tired of these women laying fault on the man when all they had to do is make better choices from the start.

Agree with JDD at 10:20. Those sound like some good sound bites for print only.
And Whitney was a foul-mooded punk even in the 80’s; her disdain for the press and anyone other than her suck-ups made me decide to never spend money on her music again. She was so wasted during a concert in Austin, blaming a “little cold” and she could barely whisper her ballads, much less sing.
If she’s truly pulling her stuff together then more power to her. A little more humility and fewer excuses would demonstrate to this former fan that she’s really working the steps and getting it. I’m open to her renewed success and have even purchased her album; don’t we all like to root for an underdog?
But the minute she cranks up that same old rotten attitude and punk behavior, I’m done.

Glad she is working on getting her life together. She’s gotta keep God first in her life. But to those who are saying Bobby was her downfall, don’t believe the hype. Whitney was into alot of things before she met Bobby, drugs included. Growing up in Newark is no easy task, and you become very streetwise in the midst of it. She was no stranger to the underbelly of our society. The public was only presented with the image that would sell the records. But thats in the past, and I hope that her future is filled with love and happiness.

It irks me to no end to see people post negative comments like Evidently. You may not care but keep it to yourself. I am so happy that her mom finally put her foot down and insisted that Whitney get help. Remember no amount of insisting or threats could have worked if Whitney wasn’t ready to turn her life around. I’m so proud of her and her mom.
I do think it’s unfair to blame Bobby for Whitney’s demise. She was / is a grown woman who made her own choices. I don’t know this for fact but I do feel Whitney was doing some type of drugs long before Bobby came into the picture. I read a book someone in her staff(driver? don’t remember) wrote years ago about her. In that book he said Whitney smoked a lot of marijuana and that was long before Bobby.
For all you self righteous judgemental people: I PRAY that you or some one you love dearly never makes a MISTAKE and you have to eat the very words you are judging others by. Instead of pointing fingers just be thankful her story is not your story YET!
Sometimes we have to sink to rock bottom in order to get it together and appreciate what we have / had.

Cissy Houston did what every parent should do. I am sick and tired of parents throwing up their hands and walking away often when the child is still in their teens. nobody is saying that Bobby was Whitney’s downfall. What I am saying is that as ahusband, he did nothing to help her or himself- stay with me people- what is Bobby doing or has done since they divorced- that is all the proof Ineed- he hasnot gotten his life together, he is behind in child support paymens again, another warrent for his arrest and what does he do, he turns around and haves another kid.
Now tell me, this kid (bobby-cuz he needs to grow up) is doing anything worthwhile with his life. He tried to get partial custody of Bobbi Kristina for money when he never did that for his other kids- guys a loser and no amount of trying to remake him will change my mind- he constantly cheated on her and could never get along with the other guysa t New Edition because ofhis oversized ego!

Good for Cissy. My son has a meth addiction and is on probation. When I discovered he was using again I called his probation officer and told her. They came to our home, tested my son and took him out in handcuffs. It is, beyond words, the most difficult thing I have ever had to do. But I would do it again. I cried for days but saving my son’s life is much, much more important than any pain I can ever experience. I’d do it again. Yes, it’s called “tough love”, with love being the operative word. To any other mother’s who may have a child being lost to addiction, take a zero tolerance stance and stick to it. Your child may get angry and you are going hurt…terribly. But taking care of that child is your job. The rewards of tough love are immeasurable. I have my wonderful, charming son back and the “meth monster” is gone.

Being a Black person, the one thing that I can say is that we will always try to bring each other down. No matter what you do in life and how well you succeed, there will be haters in the Black community. I am referring to the negative comments about Oprah and Whitney.
As some have stated, thank goodness that her Mother, Cissy Houston, stepped in to rescue her daughter. Hopefully there are others, that are not so famous, that can learn from the mistakes made by both Whitney and Bobby Brown using drugs if they are fortunate to hear Whitney’s interview with Oprah. It would even be better if more people (especially parents) did more to combat the devastating effect of drugs in our communities.
It is my prayer that Whitney, and others, can continue to get the help and support that is needed.

JohnnyDangerDawg maybe you have to see the interview in it’s entirety because I have the same questions as you. As for the people blaming Bobby for Whitney’s down fall, how do you know it was Bobby who introduced Whitney to drugs. It could have been the other way around. During an interview with Diane Sawyer Bobby said his drug of choice was alcohol.

That’s a real mother’s love.
Whether Whitney sings another note or not, she is no longer on drugs and in a better position to be a mother to her child. If she is half the mother that Cissy is to her, she is well on her way.
On another note – Bobby cannot be blamed for Whitney’s drug addiction. She was a grown woman capable of her own decisions. She knew better but at the time chose not to do better.

Jon: Are you in the music industry? If you determine that a singer’s career is over, does that may it so? Who are you?. I have lived in this world many years and one night or one concert does not end a person’s career. I have heard comedians who were funny as can be one night and then not so funny the next time around. The same thing with singers, actors, people in all walks of life. Whiteney is a singer, a damned good one. Even with her hoarseness on GMA, she sounded better than some of the so-called stars of today! Time will tell if she has gone as far as she can go. You, however, Jon are not the final word on her or anyone else’s career. If you don’t like Whitney, change the channel when she is on tv; change the radio station when her songs come on the air; don’t buy her cd’s. What’s your talent! I’m sure you have your critics…..I bet they say you are no good at what you do and should give it up, etc. Do you listen to them…..probably not. So I doubt if Whitney is going to heed your critiques and that of the other haters out there!!

I remember seeing a behind the scenes of Whitney years ago on MTV – long before she married Bobby Brown and she was NOT the classy lady that was marketed. She talked very rough and nasty. It was a total shock, so yeah, I don’t believe Bobby lead her to drugs. In the end, I am SO happy that someone loved her enough to take a chance and rescue her. I pray that she will continue her sobriety and have a long, prosperous career. Lots of people are cheering for her and look forward to seeing her again. I remember so long ago, in the early days of their marriage, when Bobby said that Whitney was always a bad girl, and she had us all fooled. Bobby was not Whitney’s downfall. She was a willing participant, but they were just not the right people for each other. The best part of them though, is their daughter, who will grow up to be a powerhouse singer like her mom AND her dad, and hopefully her dad will find the help he so badly needs also.

First off Bobby is the reason Whitney got on drugs she wasnt doing drugs before she met him , Go back into history , Talk to her friend CE-CE Winans and you will see that she wasnt on drugs then , but that neither her nor there , we as a community love to build people up and feel like we have theh power to judge and tear them down. Whitney is a singer and will always be a singer and her performance on GMA sounded better then arthea frankilin performance at the inguration, Mary J,Blige performance any day and Kesha Cole performance any day and many others , So people stop hating , we all have sinned and come short and only GOD can do the judging and the restoring and he has restored her and no man can tear her down! I have admired Whitney Houston for many years, and I still do. She is a beautiful woman from the inside out. I listen to her a lot on you tube and Rhapsody. Her talent is real, raw and incomparable. I was so excited to hear about her come back. And through the years, I’ve been concerned for her. I listened to her “I look to you” performance, and I hope she gets at least half of her singing voice back. She’s still a wonderful person. But right now, to say that she can sing would be a lie. Because I admire her, I look her up occasionally to see how she is doing, so I came across this site. After reading the comments, I felt compelled to write because some other people commented on her not being able to sing so to speak and were accused of being haters. They’re not haters, they are just telling the truth. For those of you calling others haters for telling the truth are being unreasonable. Anyway, I love Whitney Houston, and wish her the best and speediest recovery because she is a sincere and real person. And now I admire her courage. I have been blessed to hear such a wonderful voice. But most importantly, Whitney, the person is alive and well.
I am joyous for that and that alone. Of course, I would like to hear her wondrous singing again, but most of all I want her to be happy, and healthy. I will be patient, and hope that she can sing half as well as before. But I am glad that she is back. And even if she doesn’t get her voice back to 50%, I’ll still admire her because she is 100% real and beautiful. Best wishes to Whitney Houston. I heard about you because of your voice, but I loved you and still do because of who you are, a beautiful, sincere, and kind person, and that will never change.

Thank God for REAL mothers. I would do the very same thing. In fact I did but it wasn’t drug-related. My daughter wanted to marry this loser. We have always been very close. I put her out of my house and told her I would NEVER do anything to help her for the rest of her life, if she married a fool who still lived with his mother. It took three weeks and she was done with him. She just realized that there must really be something wrong with him, if I felt so strongly about him. She has been fine ever since and that was in 1999.
As a mother, that child is in your care until one of you is no longer breathing. No man, woman or Satan should be able to take that child from themselves. Thank you, Cissy, for being a guide for all mothers who have children who are hurting and need them to intervene.

Shows how far a sorry pathetic man who is not an equal can bring a successful, got-it-together woman down. Too many times she picked him up from jail or showed support during one of his trials. What kind of life is that? Plus Bobby is flat broke and is a thug. She lost a ton of credibility just being associated with him. He had no class and no amount of money or Gucci suits can add a bit of class to his act. Now she’s starting all over from scratch. I’m so glad to know her mother loved her enough to save her from drugs. If one of the Jacksons had done the same thing, maybe Michael would still be here with us.

Free Basing and smoking crack are different things:
They are two different forms of cocaine.
Freebase cocaine is not the same as “free-basing” cocaine. The difference between freebase and crack is the purity and ingredients. Crack is made with baking soda and cooked; freebase is made with ether and other chemicals like marijuana.
Freebase = form of cocaine cooked with ether, etc… (The process of making free base is very dangerous. ether is a combustible chemical and will ignite at any moment.)
Crack = Rock form of cocaine completely cooked with baking soda.
Now that we have had our drug and chemistry lesson for the day I have to say. It is so interesting how people can sit behind their computers and pass judgment. We have all done something some drugs, cheat, steal, lye, abuse, alternative living ect. The hardest thing to do is take a look at yourself and your own life. It’s a blessing that this woman was able to even try to pull herself together after all those drugs is a blessing.

I think you all need to remember Whitney’s history. Bobby was not her downfall. She was involved with women and she’s been doing cocaine for years, even before Bobby. Bobby has many issues, but he had a successful career before he met Whitney. I think that Whitney was his downfall. He was a performer before he met her and he probably would be a performer if he hadn’t met. She drank also, she may not drink liquor, but she drank plenty of wine. Oprah needs to also interview Bobby and get his side of the story. Cissy did a great job of rescuing her daughter from a life of drugs, but Bobby cannot be the blame for her downfall. It is easy to blame others, but you have to accept your actions also. Whitney is a bright and talented woman, but she needs wake up and stop blaming others for her problems.

Evidently no one cared about Evidently or he/she would care about others such as Whitney and Erin. Hat’s off to Cissy for getting her daughter back on track.

TT focus cause Oprah did interview Bobby Brown. I don’t believe Whitney blamed Bobby for her downfall I think she held herself completely accountable for her actions. She said her addiction was too her man and it wasn’t the drugs or alcohol. She was addicted to the freedom to be herself and the passion he gave her the drugs just fell in with all of that. TT you just said people should not try to place the blame for their actions on others yet you blamed Whitney for Bobby’s downfall. That’s hypocrytical.

CreoleLeo I agree with you J is the anti-Christ! Based on his comment and maturity level Erin nor Whitney would sleep with him if they were high on every drug on this planted. Probably not the rest of the female population either.

First,
Bobby was much younger than Whitney when she got with him. Look at her past..Darryl Strawberry, Eddie Murphy who was best friends with Rick James, she dated, Her Aunt is a reefer addict. Ok..at the airport remember. Also her brother a druggie. It was wrong for her to say Bobby was jealous?? His career was at a high when he got with her..he dropped his career to deal with a controlling addict like her. Also in the interview first she said He did not do drugs but just drank too much…then later she says he was her drug partner? She is apparently still in denial. And The show Being Bobby did anyone even watch that? Look how she acted on that show. Plus she was sending him out for drugs. In addition, to me it seemed he was in love a bit and let her use him and keep him down from his success. She is a DRAMA QUEEN !!!!.and a liar…could not even look Oprah in the eyes when she told her lies. And as far as the daughter i hope she will be ok looks like Bobby was the mother and father to her but hey…kids unfortunately at times go with the money. He is better off without her then maybe he can get his life back together maybe a comeback too would be cool. I would definitely buy his records. Not hers… she is full of it.
