Hot act the Zac Brown Band, who performed numerous times at the seminal Georgia Theatre in Athens before they broke it big, will be headlining a benefit concert at Fox Theatre October 30.

Proceeds will go to help rebuild the theater, which suffered major damage in a fire a few weeks ago. The theater has been home to many big acts over the years including R.E.M., the B-52s and Widespread Panic.

“My band and many others have come up playing there,” explains Zac Brown in a press release. “That building means far more to us, and the community, then its brick and mortar foundation. We want to make sure that it gets proper funding so we can rebuild it better than it was. It will remain a center for art and music long into the future with everyone’s help.”

I had earlier noted that Zac Brown is a “country” band. That’s not a fair statement. They do blues and rock, too. They just happen to have their breakout success in the country arena with three big hits. The publicist wanted me to make it clear they don’t want to be pigeonholed (although most successful bands end being being “genre”-rized anyway.)
