Michael Jackson’s trippy 1988 film “Moonwalker” becomes a quirky midnight movie this weekend, thanks to the folks at Cool Cinemas. The flick will hit the screen locally at Landmark Midtown Art Cinema on Monroe Drive.
The bizzaro film essentially was created for the purposes of promoting Jackson’s “Bad” album. It also inadvertently ended up becoming a huge hit with Jackson’s small fry fans back in the then-burgeoning home video market.
“Moonwalker” includes the videos to the pop star’s hits “Man in the Mirror” and “Leave Me Alone” and the entire 45-minute short film of “Smooth Criminal” featuring actor Joe Pesci as a drug lord (whose goal, aside from chasing and shooting at Michael, is to get the world’s children hooked on dope, incidentally) and lots of Jackson-generated dancing. Oh, and did we mention that Sean Lennon, the son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono is also in it?
The film also boasts an impressive career retrospective of Jackson (with lots of clips of him from his Jackson 5 days), “Badder,” a kiddie video cover of “Bad” by little kids dressed like the singer and “Speed Demon,” a Claymation short featuring a clay Jackson dancing with a rabbit named Spike.
Perhaps not coincidentally, Landmark Midtown Art Cinema serves wine and beer at its concession stand.
