Singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter’s many local fans will want to be at Agnes Scott College’s Presser Hall Sept. 5 for a unique evening of music celebrating the 100th anniversary of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Eudora Welty’s birth.
Carpenter will be performing with Kate Campbell, Caroline Herring and Claire Holley as part of the AJC Decatur Book Festival.
As Carpenter’s illuminated pink flamingo-clutching Chastain fans know, the summer mainstay has been on a two-year break from performing, following a recovery from a scary pulmonary embolism.
This spring, a tribute to Welty in Jackson, Miss with the other singer-songwriters on the Decatur bill served as Carpenter’s return to performing.
A longtime Welty fan (Carpenter’s song, “Halley Came to Jackson” was inspired by the author) was looking for another venue to re-create this spring’s show.
The AJC Decatur Book Festival’s organizers were only too happy to help. Tickets are $25.
Also, the festival has snagged journalism giant Sir Harold Evans (and the hubby of Tina Brown) as the Labor Day weekend event’s keynote speaker. The former editor of London’s Sunday Times and president of Random House will discuss the future of newspapers and books in the age of Twitter and the Kindle.
“We are ecstatic to have Sir Harold Evans delivering the keynote address this year,” said DBF Executive Director Daren Wang. “Considering the uncertain future of the printed word, his vast body of knowledge and experience in the fields of publishing and journalism make him eminently qualified to deliver the keynote address.”
Concert tickets are available at Agnes Scott College’s box office or by calling: (404) 471-6430.
