Clive Davis previews Whitney Houston comeback

Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston

Music mogul Clive Davis appeared on “Good Morning America” Tuesday to preview Whitney Houston’s much-anticipated new album, “I Look to You” due out Sept. 1.

“You won’t forget it after you hear it,” Davis told “GMA” co-anchor Diane Sawyer. Not coincidentally, the ABC morning show has landed Houston’s comeback concert appearance this fall, timed to the release of the album, the first new studio project by the former Atlantan in seven years.

Davis, who discovered Houston 25 years ago, re-teamed with her two years ago to work on a comeback that will hopefully make fans forget about the tabloid headlines, her high-profile divorce from Bobby Brown and her, um, memorable cameos on the televised trainwreck “Being Bobby Brown.”

Of Houston’s new single, Davis previewed: “There’s a song on the album called ‘I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.’ And it really speaks for Whitney. She tumbled but she didn’t crumble.”

Even as the hype machine spins into overdrive for “I Look to You,” industry insiders wonder if those trademark Houston pipes, reportedly ravaged from years of abuse, remain intact for a comeback. In the age of the digital download, artists depend more heavily on touring for revenue than ever before.

And unlike Britney Spears, who has staged a successful comeback this year via the live spectacle “Circus” tour, Houston made her mark in music based on her amazing vocal prowess.

It’s doubtful that fans would plunk down top dollar in this economy for a lip-syncing Houston. Complicating matters further, a fresh generation of divas, led by Beyonce and Ciara, now dominate the spotlight. Even Houston’s 1980s peer Janet Jackson, with a top record producer like Jermaine Dupri at the helm, has recently encountered trouble re-gaining her “Control” era chart-topping numbers.

What’s your take? Are you booking a flight to New York City this fall to scream down front at the “GMA” Whitney Houston concert? Will you at least slide a copy of “I Look to You” into your cart while browsing the aisles of Target? Or have you musically moved on in 2009?

I’ll buy it. Even if she’s damaged her voice she can still sing circles around 99% of the chicks out there. Regardless, Whitney has never been known to lip-sync. BTW, even mentioning Ciara in the same sentence is a joke. She can’t even compete with Beyonce let alone Whitney.

I am looking forward to hearing from Whitney again. Everyone makes mistake and I hope what she went through does not affect her record sales, if the music is worth buying. I will be purchasing her CD in September. Good Luck and May God Bless You.

The only thing that I dont like is that Whitney is still hanging with Ray J. I dont understand that. If it is good quality, I will buy it. I dont think she will ever be as focused as she was in the past. Her mind is not there.

I look forward to hearing her new CD. I have the last one and it was underrated. Regardless of her private life, she was always so graceful and beautiful when performing. Beyonce may be on top, but I appreciate Whitney never singing songs like “Ego” or “Check Up on It”. I also appreciate her not performing half naked in videos and promoting sex instead of her talent. Whitney, you are still a DIVA and these new “divas” should really look at how you did it and did it with class!

I’m confused.. Ciara’s record sales are in the dirt.. so how does she get an honorable mention in the same breath as Beyonce… I cracked up at the slight at Britney Spears… I worry about the consumers these days.. I can’t wait to see Whitney’s first live show b/c that will tell all.. Anyone can sound good on record (AUTOTUNE) but live is another animal so we’ll see..

It will be interesting to see if she can pull off the songs live as oppose to what Clive helps her create in the recording studio. That is what will determine if she is able to revive her career.

I always thought that Whitney would be great, if she can keep it together mentally and emotionally, doing a Vegas type gig like Celine, Cher, Gladys, Elton, Bette, etc. That way she would not have to endure the stress of touring from city to city.

Whitney has been blessed with voice. There is no comparison between her & the new generation of divas. Even if her range has dropped a bit & may not be as strong as it was before, she still can sing rings around Beyonce. Beyonce’s fame is based more on her entertainment quality & marketability than her vocal chords. She’s easy on the eyes & takes commands on a stage, not to mention she seems incredibly humble too. I think she’s great at what she does & nobody, right now, is doing it better. However, Whitney’s fame is her vocal ability & she can still sang (not sing.)Whitney’s a true diva & I will buy it just like I bought the last one, even though it paled in comparison to the Whitney of old. Personally, I’m sick of the fluff singers – Ciara; lack of tonal quality & over-rated under-achiever singers – Jennifer H., etc. I want some real singing – i.e. Mariah Carey, Monica, Brandi, oldies, but goodies like Patti LaBelle & Aretha Franklin – ladies with some real pipes to belt out & deliver a song that evoke some real emotion. Yeh Whitney, come on back & do your thing girl!

The likes of Beyonce, Ciara, Rihanna, Ashanti, Brittney Spears, etc. are NOT to be compared to Whitney Houston (or Jennifer Hudson for that matter). Whitney can SING!!! She has talent. The current group of “singers” in the spotlight are manufactured in the studio and are lacking in real singing ability. Beyonce is a great performer with her booty shaking music, but she is not to be compared with an angelic voice like Whitney Houston or strong vocals like Jennifer Hudson. And the other young ladies, they have no lasting affects in the industry at all, they’ll be gone tomorrow. I look forward to hearing Whitney’s beautiful voice again, I pray that she hasn’t lost it during her life struggles. Hopefully, those struggles have added something to her repertoire and her vocals are back and better than ever. I’m anxiously awaiting!

I am with the consensus-Please don’t ever again mention Ciara in the same sentence-UNIVERSE with Whitney Houston! Whitney Houston’s voice is her instrument. She doesn’t need videos, stage productions (No offense Beyonce) but I am old school. True singers like Patti, Gladys, Phyllis Hyman, Billie Holiday and Ms. Whitney don’t need props and back up dancers. Just their voice and a microphone. God Bless Whitney Houston. If she sounds even HALF as good as she used to she STILL sounds 100%better than these studio made, video stars, wannabe singers today.

I recommend listening to 1980s Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick. They were in a similar age as Whitney is today, yet they still made hids and had quite a presence. Even women have “puberty” in their voices; it just occurs at a later age and a more gradual pace.

Ciara? You got to be joking! She is a hot azz mess. I agree with the consensus too … it’s a shame to even see her name mentioned in this article.

Beyonce? Yes, she’s a great entertainer and, honestly, can sing too. Not like Whitney Houston, but the girl can hold a tune and blow (unlike Brittany, Ciara, Rihanna and, although I love her, Janet).

Whitney is the true diva but I’m afraid her time has come and gone. I will always respect and appreciate her for what she brought to the world of entertainment, but the way she wrecked her voice, I can’t say I’m really looking forward to her “come back.” I heard her single that Clive Davis referenced and wasn’t impressed. I’m sure I’ll purchase the album because, after all, it’s Whitney. I’ll purchase based on her name alone. But I don’t expect much from it. Sad, but true.

Age and experience changes a lot of things in everyone. She had the voice of a songbird in her youth, and I’m sure after all she’s been through, not only can she sing better than most others her age, but her life experiences have given her more ’soul’ to sing about. After attending one of her concerts in Atlanta in 1985 and listening to how rude she was to my wife, myself and other fans who paid their hard earned money to see her perform I vowed never to attend anymore of her concerts. To this day I intend to stick to my vow. If being a Diva means you have to be nasty to your fans then I guess I am no longer a fan and have not been one since 1985. I hope she truly has her act together and is congizant of the fact that fans or the lack thereof can make or break a career. God may have provided the talent but He also asks us to be humble. I did not get that vibe from Ms. Houston back in 85. I hope she has changed in that respect. She does have talent and I do wish her well on her comeback attempt. Age and experience changes a lot of things in everyone. She had the voice of a songbird in her youth, and I’m sure after all she’s been through, not only can she sing better than most others her age, but her life experiences have given her more ’soul’ to sing about. I’ve been waiting on her . . . I bet if she got with a good church choir, she would blow the roof off – she’s got a God-given gift. I’ll buy it!

gwen, well said! — that’s exactly right

What a shame! All I see here are my black brothers & sisters (halfwits and hoodrats) praising the name of a serious Crack Addict by the name of Whitney Houston. When are you people, yes I used it, gonna wake up? Most of ya I fear couldnt tell the difference between chocolate cake frosting and doo doo and probably dont care.

You all sit in “da hood” driving your broken down cadillacs praising these two faced, double talking pseudo stars, like MJ and Whitney yet refuse to do anything for yourself. As President Obama stated “Government cant solve your problems.”

I’m wishing Whitney all the best. However, I’d want to SEE her concert on TV before I committed to buying any downloads, etc. I do not wish to invest in any lip-synching performer myself. Since Whitney is a contemporary of mine & I loved her in her heyday, I’m willing to allow a little leeway. But only a little. I am not planning to plunk down the dollars to go to NYC just to see her perform. But, the same goes for almost any artist. I simply don’t have the money. Janet Jackson…can any of you people understand what she is saying? Regarding the likes of Ciara, Beyonce, etc. What are they going to when they are to old to wear skimpy clothes and shake a booty? They’d better hope they can stand on their talent. Beyonce may be able to, but Ciara? Not! Look at REAL talented ladies like Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight. Bring it girl! I will definitely be buying the CD come Sept. I’ve been looking forward to her comeback. These so called divas don’t even come close to the likes of Whitney. Beyonce is an entertainer not a great singer, getting tips from Madonna I suppose. She struts herself with less clothes every time she takes the stage. Ciara doesn’t have the power in her voice. Jennifer Hudson has pipes but still lacks what Whitney had and hopefully still has. Wish her the best and thankful she learned from those mistakes.

Whitney is a total musical genius. Even if she doesn’t know it. Her voice octave is pure gold and she can always deliver excellent voice quality in any song. i’ve moved on. you need only listen to whitney’s christmas cd to see how far her voice has fallen. and that cd was recorded several years ago (unfortunately, it wasn’t recorded early in her career when she had her pipes).

check out roy jones’ boxing match at radio city music hall from a few years ago and listen to whitney sing the national anthem there. after that train wreck, even her publicist couldn’t deny the drug rumors any longer.

l.a. reid lost his job because of her…the clive davis who is praising whitney now, he is the same clive davis who fired reid for giving whitney a zillion-dollar advance when everyone knew the public was tuning her out.

the last time she came to northern california, she cancelled her concert 2 hours before it was scheduled to start. the city of concord even tried to sue her to recover their police costs from that fiasco.

Whitney was the best back in the 80’s and 90’s. A real class act. Amazing style and voice. Much better quality than many of the singers today. Beyonce? Mediocre. Ciara? Mediocre. Britney? Double-Mediocre. Jennifer Hudson? Just a step above mediocre. Madonna? When she’s live she is downright scary. Janet Jackson? Can’t understand a word. Rhianna? Mediocre.

We must stand by her side as black women, regardless of the trials and tribulations she has endured from both the media and choices (she made in her life). I am so excited for Whitney. God bless you my sister.

As for the critics…they will always be around. I will continue to pray for Whitney and the critics. Everyone…I repeat everyone…. has and will continue to sin and make bad decisions. If we are a true believer of Jesus Christ then we know that we must always forgive others and ask for forgiveness for our sins and wrong doings as well, if we want God to forgive us we have no choice but to forgive.

I pray that God’s favor will forever rest upon Whitney. I pray that Whitney will let the love of God flow through her. I pray that God will lead her and give her wisdom to make wise choices.

The bible says to “judge not, that you be not judged by that same measure”. That simply means that when you judge someone you will find yourself being judged by that same standard.

To the critics….Jesus loves you just as much as he loves me. I pray that one day you will come to an understanding and acceptance of his love and that you will receive him into your heart. He wants to love you and make you a better person. Be really careful about speaking negativity towards people. You never know who they are in the kingdom of God.

I love you (critics) but God loves you so much more.

Go Whitney!!! Can’t wait to purchase your CD.

I went to the whitney houston official site and listened to all of her songs all the way threw. I enjoyed the album, however I think I was waiting to hear the “Whitney Houston” unforgettable vocals and they just were not there. I thought that when I heard the song “I didn’t know my own strength” that I was going to hear it and the song builds up to the vocal but lands short and you NEVER hear it. I have to wonder, all that Houston has been through, will she ever be able to hit the notes that Mariah and so many to follow once copied? Maybe a better choice of song would have been better to stage a comeback. Whitney stay strong!
