Clive Davis previews Whitney Houston comeback

Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston

Music mogul Clive Davis appeared on “Good Morning America” Tuesday to preview Whitney Houston’s much-anticipated new album, “I Look to You” due out Sept. 1.

“You won’t forget it after you hear it,” Davis told “GMA” co-anchor Diane Sawyer. Not coincidentally, the ABC morning show has landed Houston’s comeback concert appearance this fall, timed to the release of the album, the first new studio project by the former Atlantan in seven years.

Davis, who discovered Houston 25 years ago, re-teamed with her two years ago to work on a comeback that will hopefully make fans forget about the tabloid headlines, her high-profile divorce from Bobby Brown and her, um, memorable cameos on the televised trainwreck “Being Bobby Brown.”

Of Houston’s new single, Davis previewed: “There’s a song on the album called ‘I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.’ And it really speaks for Whitney. She tumbled but she didn’t crumble.”

Even as the hype machine spins into overdrive for “I Look to You,” industry insiders wonder if those trademark Houston pipes, reportedly ravaged from years of abuse, remain intact for a comeback. In the age of the digital download, artists depend more heavily on touring for revenue than ever before.

And unlike Britney Spears, who has staged a successful comeback this year via the live spectacle “Circus” tour, Houston made her mark in music based on her amazing vocal prowess.

It’s doubtful that fans would plunk down top dollar in this economy for a lip-syncing Houston. Complicating matters further, a fresh generation of divas, led by Beyonce and Ciara, now dominate the spotlight. Even Houston’s 1980s peer Janet Jackson, with a top record producer like Jermaine Dupri at the helm, has recently encountered trouble re-gaining her “Control” era chart-topping numbers.

What’s your take? Are you booking a flight to New York City this fall to scream down front at the “GMA” Whitney Houston concert? Will you at least slide a copy of “I Look to You” into your cart while browsing the aisles of Target? Or have you musically moved on in 2009?

She will always have it. She is one of my favorite “female’ singers, and I only have a few. I am “old school” and like to know the words to what I listen too. God bless you Whitney and keep the faith.

First of all, Whitney is a human being. She is a child of God. She made some serious mistakes in her life. Who hasn’t. Some are more serious than others. Let’s hear her album and then make a judgement then. If you like it, buy it. If you don’t, don’t.

I hope for a successful comeback for Whitney. We must stand by her side as black women, regardless of the trials and tribulations she has endured from both the media and choices (she made in her life). We all fall short and make decisions that we later regret. The only difference is our lives are not played out on a stage for all to judge. I believe the ultimate gift we as humans can give one another is what we desire the most (the gift of forgiveness)….

I have always been a Whitney fan since growing up in Dominica in the Eastern Caribbean. The coming back of this Legend after so much she has been through is wonderful and will certain support her by purchasing this CD. However I do hope there is a concert set for ATL in the near future because I have never seen Whitney in concert nor in person and it would be an honor to see her do what she does best. “SING” WITH PASSION.

This is truly sad. I think some of you need a reality check. How can you HATE someone and say you love GOD? Whether we agree with what someone has done, we still need to love and respect them as a child of GOD. We have all made mistakes. Doesn’t the Bible say something about,”he without sin cast the first stone?” Leave it alone and leave Whitney alone. Either you buy the CD or not. She will survive.

Whitney Houston is headed back to the top of the music charts where she belongs. She will change the sound of radio all over the world on September 1st and will garner a Grammy, along with David Foster and Diane Warren for the beautiful classic Whitney anthem “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.”

Whitney Houston the biggest singer of all time is back and she is still the best out there. Please don’t you ever say the name of the likes of ( beyonce, rihanna, etc….) in the same sentence as Whitney because they are not on Whitney’s level and they will never be. So what she made some mistakes at least she knows that and better herself. She has talent what do have haters you are just some jobless fool with too much time on your hands. I will so be ready to buy your new album Whitney, keep going and may the good Lord be with you. Love always your fan forever.Jennifer H and Fantasia are good singer and you can see them singing not lip syncing.

[...] Davis had this to say about the Whitney Houston new album in 2009. ‘You won’t forget it after you hear it,’ [...]

Here’s a girl that almost ruined her entire career, ruined her entire life by getting involved, marrying the wrong person.
The highlight of her career was when she starred in The Bodyguard with Kevin Costner.
Between that flm and now she has wasted her life.

So many are quick to judge someone else. Where and when did those who have turned their backs get the idea they could walk in her shoes and still be standing. It is called jealousy!!!!!!!

If the CD is good , I will purchase it. Look forward to her GMA concert in the fall. It’s about time we hear some real music. Now I do disagree that Jennifer H can’t sing, she’s been blessed., just needs the right material. Bey is sexy and sex sells. Now that she can’t sing but you cannot compare her to Whit, Florence Ballard (yeah folks she was the voice not Dianna) , Aretha and of course Ms Patti…these ladies are in a league of their own. Whitney, I love this line from an Atlanta pastor: There are just some folks that you have to leave behind and alone…..Ray-J is and will always be a waste of time and energy. Kick him to the curb, Kim C did it…….

I am so excited for Whitney. God bless you my sister.

As for the critics…they will always be around. I will continue to pray for Whitney and the critics. Everyone…I repeat everyone…. has and will continue to sin and make bad decisions. If we are a true believer of Jesus Christ then we know that we must always forgive others and ask for forgiveness for our sins and wrong doings as well, if we want God to forgive us we have no choice but to forgive.

I pray that God’s favor will forever rest upon Whitney. I pray that Whitney will let the love of God flow through her. I pray that God will lead her and give her wisdom to make wise choices.

The bible says to “judge not, that you be not judged by that same measure”. That simply means that when you judge someone you will find yourself being judged by that same standard.

To the critics….Jesus loves you just as much as he loves me. I pray that one day you will come to an understanding and acceptance of his love and that you will receive him into your heart. He wants to love you and make you a better person. Be really careful about speaking negativity towards people. You never know who they are in the kingdom of God.

I love you (critics) but God loves you so much more.

Go Whitney!!! Can’t wait to purchase your CD.

Who is Ciara?? I don’t know so why put her with Beyonce & the Grand Diva herself Whitney Houston?? I have already preordered my copy of Whitneys new album on Amazon. After adding so much to the soundtrack of American music who wouldn’t want to give her a chance to come back strong?? Everyone loves a comeback story, don’t they?

I heard one of the songs and she don’t have the pipes. Worse yet why is she saying that she took a break from the industry to be with her daughter. The world seen the break she took.
Don’t lie about it better to say nothing than be a liar.

Either way I do hope she is clean and on the mend although the eyes don’t look like she is.

Heard the song and could barely tell it was Whitney. She can’t hit the high notes anymore. The song is kind of painful to listen to. Bummer.

I went to the whitney houston official site and listened to all of her songs all the way threw. I enjoyed the album, however I think I was waiting to hear the “Whitney Houston” unforgettable vocals and they just were not there. I thought that when I heard the song “I didn’t know my own strength” that I was going to hear it and the song builds up to the vocal but lands short and you NEVER hear it. I have to wonder, all that Houston has been through, will she ever be able to hit the notes that Mariah and so many to follow once copied? Maybe a better choice of song would have been better to stage a comeback. Whitney stay strong!
