Clive Davis previews Whitney Houston comeback

Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston

Music mogul Clive Davis appeared on “Good Morning America” Tuesday to preview Whitney Houston’s much-anticipated new album, “I Look to You” due out Sept. 1.

“You won’t forget it after you hear it,” Davis told “GMA” co-anchor Diane Sawyer. Not coincidentally, the ABC morning show has landed Houston’s comeback concert appearance this fall, timed to the release of the album, the first new studio project by the former Atlantan in seven years.

Davis, who discovered Houston 25 years ago, re-teamed with her two years ago to work on a comeback that will hopefully make fans forget about the tabloid headlines, her high-profile divorce from Bobby Brown and her, um, memorable cameos on the televised trainwreck “Being Bobby Brown.”

Of Houston’s new single, Davis previewed: “There’s a song on the album called ‘I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.’ And it really speaks for Whitney. She tumbled but she didn’t crumble.”

Even as the hype machine spins into overdrive for “I Look to You,” industry insiders wonder if those trademark Houston pipes, reportedly ravaged from years of abuse, remain intact for a comeback. In the age of the digital download, artists depend more heavily on touring for revenue than ever before.

And unlike Britney Spears, who has staged a successful comeback this year via the live spectacle “Circus” tour, Houston made her mark in music based on her amazing vocal prowess.

It’s doubtful that fans would plunk down top dollar in this economy for a lip-syncing Houston. Complicating matters further, a fresh generation of divas, led by Beyonce and Ciara, now dominate the spotlight. Even Houston’s 1980s peer Janet Jackson, with a top record producer like Jermaine Dupri at the helm, has recently encountered trouble re-gaining her “Control” era chart-topping numbers.

What’s your take? Are you booking a flight to New York City this fall to scream down front at the “GMA” Whitney Houston concert? Will you at least slide a copy of “I Look to You” into your cart while browsing the aisles of Target? Or have you musically moved on in 2009?

I wish the old girl the best but I’m afraid her prior antics in the public spotlight may have damaged her career beyond repair. Lord knows she was every body’s darling during the 80’s and had the midas touch when it came to delivering the song with flair, style and class. Maybe she can claw her way back but I am afraid it’s a long shot.

There will never be another Whitney. I look forward to hearing from her again. What GOD has given, can not be taken away. God just delayed her progress until she was in postion to serve him, I know she is ready for a comeback because she has allowed the things that were hindering her to be removed. I give GOD the glory for her well-being.

This article is so disrespectful… Considering recent events, I would think that we have had enough of the persecution game! Whitney is and always be an influential artist for the women of our day. Regarding the damage done to her voice it is nothing a little training can’t help; Billy Holiday and Sade both damaged there voices and continued to woo the world.

WHITNEY HAS A GOD-GIVEN TALENT. I AGREE THAT THERE IS NO ONE, I SAID NO ONE IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY THAT CAN TOUCH HER OR EMMULATE HER TALENT. WHITNEY HOUSTON WHEN SHE PERFORMS, HER VOICE SENDS SHIVERS DOWN YOUR SPINE, SIMPLY BECAUSE SHE IS SO PHENOMENAL. I AM GLAD THAT SHE IS MAKING A COMEBACK. WHITNEY TAKE YOUR CROWN BECAUSE YOU DESERVE IT. QUEEN OF THE DIVAS. GOD BLESS YOU.

I’m so proud of Whitney. She’s a true diva. I wish her a great comeback & much success. Why was Ciara even mentioned? She cant sing. she uses her raunchiness & gyrating manuevers to overshadow her lack of singing ability. She said she is the princess of crunk… she should call her self the princess of who gives a f…
Go Whitney, Go . You still got it.

As soon as the GMA date is announced, I will be booking my flight! She is still the Diva! I have loved her music since 1985! My very first cassette was Whitney Houston. She can still sing circles around the majority of people out there! I will Always Love Her. I am sure the ballads will be great and then remixed to be great dance music! Check out my iTunes…it is loaded with any and everything she has ever done! She is BACK!!!!

Ciara? You got to be joking! She is a hot azz mess. I agree with the consensus too … it’s a shame to even see her name mentioned in this article.

Beyonce? Yes, she’s a great entertainer and, honestly, can sing too. Not like Whitney Houston, but the girl can hold a tune and blow (unlike Brittany, Ciara, Rihanna and, although I love her, Janet).

Whitney is the true diva but I’m afraid her time has come and gone. I will always respect and appreciate her for what she brought to the world of entertainment, but the way she wrecked her voice, I can’t say I’m really looking forward to her “come back.” I heard her single that Clive Davis referenced and wasn’t impressed. I’m sure I’ll purchase the album because, after all, it’s Whitney. I’ll purchase based on her name alone. But I don’t expect much from it. Sad, but true.

I will be getting this album, can’t wait, Whitney is my girl and I love her to death. Beyonce does not compare to Whitney vocally, yes she does get on stage half naked and dance, but she really can’t sing, I would put Jennifer Hudson and Fantasia above Beyonce vocally any day. F**k these hating people Whitney, do your thing and know you have true die hard fans out here that still loves you.

MAKE YOUR HATERS YOUR MOTIVATORS WHITNEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Prior to her meltdown, Whitney Houston did have alot of class compared to most celebrities today. (Beyonce is sooo overrated and she sings a ton of nonsense songs.) I’d buy her new stuff if its decent.

What’s funny, Turd Ferguson, is you don’t know how to spell. I see you’re brewing crap over here too. Too funny.

I am looking forward to Whitney’s comeback and can only hope she still has the voice (I doubt it), but waiting to hear. However, I won’t be flying to NY to find out. Listening at home will suffice!

Age and experience changes a lot of things in everyone. She had the voice of a songbird in her youth, and I’m sure after all she’s been through, not only can she sing better than most others her age, but her life experiences have given her more ’soul’ to sing about. I’ve been waiting on her . . . I bet if she got with a good church choir, she would blow the roof off – she’s got a God-given gift. I’ll buy it!

After attending one of her concerts in Atlanta in 1985 and listening to how rude she was to my wife, myself and other fans who paid their hard earned money to see her perform I vowed never to attend anymore of her concerts. To this day I intend to stick to my vow. If being a Diva means you have to be nasty to your fans then I guess I am no longer a fan and have not been one since 1985. I hope she truly has her act together and is congizant of the fact that fans or the lack thereof can make or break a career. God may have provided the talent but He also asks us to be humble. I did not get that vibe from Ms. Houston back in 85. I hope she has changed in that respect. She does have talent and I do wish her well on her comeback attempt. Just show us some humility this time and your light will forever shine!!

I am sorry to say but I actually watched her reality show. I was soooo embarassed for her. I still cannot get the image of her being drunk and on drugs out of my head. I never will. For someone with such talent to degrade herself to such a pitiful level is so sad. To have been blessed with so much and to end up like she did… She will never be the same for me no matter what she does from now on. It is true people do remember the worst about you….

What! Yes I’ll buy it! Whitney is the Queen of Pop, and don’t y’all forget it. Even on her worst day her voice will sound better than Beyonce and Ciara at their best! Please, no comparison. Don’t get me wrong, I am a big Beyonce fan and the girl can sing, but she’s not in Whitney’s league. I thought Mariah was until that fiasco at MJ’s tribute and a few other live performances. And for all you naysayers who have “moved on”……… go ahead, no one needs a fly-by-night fan, true fans stick with a celeb through thick and thin.

When are you people, yes I used it, gonna wake up? Most of ya I fear couldnt tell the difference between chocolate cake frosting and doo doo and probably dont care.

You all sit in “da hood” driving your broken down cadillacs praising these two faced, double talking pseudo stars, like MJ and Whitney yet refuse to do anything for yourself. As President Obama stated “Government cant solve your problems.”

Yes, Beyonce can somewhat hold a tune.. But Ciara, What is that, she is like Janet Jackson, a pretty that can dance but can not sing or sang…

Welcome Back Whitney.. Show these folks what you are worth!!!
