Clive Davis previews Whitney Houston comeback

Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston

Music mogul Clive Davis appeared on “Good Morning America” Tuesday to preview Whitney Houston’s much-anticipated new album, “I Look to You” due out Sept. 1.

“You won’t forget it after you hear it,” Davis told “GMA” co-anchor Diane Sawyer. Not coincidentally, the ABC morning show has landed Houston’s comeback concert appearance this fall, timed to the release of the album, the first new studio project by the former Atlantan in seven years.

Davis, who discovered Houston 25 years ago, re-teamed with her two years ago to work on a comeback that will hopefully make fans forget about the tabloid headlines, her high-profile divorce from Bobby Brown and her, um, memorable cameos on the televised trainwreck “Being Bobby Brown.”

Of Houston’s new single, Davis previewed: “There’s a song on the album called ‘I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.’ And it really speaks for Whitney. She tumbled but she didn’t crumble.”

Even as the hype machine spins into overdrive for “I Look to You,” industry insiders wonder if those trademark Houston pipes, reportedly ravaged from years of abuse, remain intact for a comeback. In the age of the digital download, artists depend more heavily on touring for revenue than ever before.

And unlike Britney Spears, who has staged a successful comeback this year via the live spectacle “Circus” tour, Houston made her mark in music based on her amazing vocal prowess.

It’s doubtful that fans would plunk down top dollar in this economy for a lip-syncing Houston. Complicating matters further, a fresh generation of divas, led by Beyonce and Ciara, now dominate the spotlight. Even Houston’s 1980s peer Janet Jackson, with a top record producer like Jermaine Dupri at the helm, has recently encountered trouble re-gaining her “Control” era chart-topping numbers.

What’s your take? Are you booking a flight to New York City this fall to scream down front at the “GMA” Whitney Houston concert? Will you at least slide a copy of “I Look to You” into your cart while browsing the aisles of Target? Or have you musically moved on in 2009?

I’ll buy it. Even if she’s damaged her voice she can still sing circles around 99% of the chicks out there. Regardless, Whitney has never been known to lip-sync. BTW, even mentioning Ciara in the same sentence is a joke. She can’t even compete with Beyonce let alone Whitney.

I am looking forward to hearing from Whitney again. Everyone makes mistake and I hope what she went through does not affect her record sales, if the music is worth buying. I will be purchasing her CD in September. Good Luck and May God Bless You.

The only thing that I dont like is that Whitney is still hanging with Ray J. I dont understand that. If it is good quality, I will buy it. I dont think she will ever be as focused as she was in the past. Her mind is not there.

I Love Whitney. You can tell her voice has changed, however, she can still sing better than Bey. I will be making the purchase. Good Luck Whitney!

I will definitely buy! She is super talented no matter what and the fact that she has left all “that” behind, more reason for me to show love and support.

I look forward to hearing her new CD. I have the last one and it was underrated. Regardless of her private life, she was always so graceful and beautiful when performing. Beyonce may be on top, but I appreciate Whitney never singing songs like “Ego” or “Check Up on It”. I also appreciate her not performing half naked in videos and promoting sex instead of her talent. Whitney, you are still a DIVA and these new “divas” should really look at how you did it and did it with class!

I’m confused.. Ciara’s record sales are in the dirt.. so how does she get an honorable mention in the same breath as Beyonce… I cracked up at the slight at Britney Spears… I worry about the consumers these days.. I can’t wait to see Whitney’s first live show b/c that will tell all.. Anyone can sound good on record (AUTOTUNE) but live is another animal so we’ll see..

It will be interesting to see if she can pull off the songs live as oppose to what Clive helps her create in the recording studio. That is what will determine if she is able to revive her career.

I always thought that Whitney would be great, if she can keep it together mentally and emotionally, doing a Vegas type gig like Celine, Cher, Gladys, Elton, Bette, etc. That way she would not have to endure the stress of touring from city to city.

I’m rooting for a comeback. If it’s good I will buy it. I agree with Lewis, Whitney needs to leave Ray J alone and work on re establishing herself as well as being a mom to her daughter. Leave the lil boys alone.
Go Whitney!!

WHAT? LIPSYNCHING HOUSTON? Are you crazy? Whitney is one of those singers who NEVER lipsynchs. Perhaps you were referring to Mariah Carey?

I’ll definitely be the first one to buy Whitney’s album. The world has lost one of its icons Michael Jackson; we can’t afford to lose another.

Whitney has been blessed with voice. There is no comparison between her & the new generation of divas. Even if her range has dropped a bit & may not be as strong as it was before, she still can sing rings around Beyonce. Beyonce’s fame is based more on her entertainment quality & marketability than her vocal chords. She’s easy on the eyes & takes commands on a stage, not to mention she seems incredibly humble too. I think she’s great at what she does & nobody, right now, is doing it better. However, Whitney’s fame is her vocal ability & she can still sang (not sing.)Whitney’s a true diva & I will buy it just like I bought the last one, even though it paled in comparison to the Whitney of old. Personally, I’m sick of the fluff singers – Ciara; lack of tonal quality & over-rated under-achiever singers – Jennifer H., etc. I want some real singing – i.e. Mariah Carey, Monica, Brandi, oldies, but goodies like Patti LaBelle & Aretha Franklin – ladies with some real pipes to belt out & deliver a song that evoke some real emotion. Yeh Whitney, come on back & do your thing girl!

I’ve missed the real Whitney Houston, I did not like the fact that she did that show with Bobby Brown. I watched it a couple of times but I couldn’t take it anymore seeing her like that. I am glad that she is trying to make a come back—–I brought her Christmas CD with her daughter singing with her and I will buy her NEW CD in September to support her. REMEMBER WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES—-SHE IS HUMAN. I LOVE YOU WHITNEY—-GOOD LUCK

I agree….at least she does have talent and despite her mistakes in the past that will never change. I do not support some of the new artists who the greedy record companies manufacture through marketing, ex. Taylor Swift, Jonas Brothers. If I hear you sing live and you don’t sound any better than me, forget about it!!

The likes of Beyonce, Ciara, Rihanna, Ashanti, Brittney Spears, etc. are NOT to be compared to Whitney Houston (or Jennifer Hudson for that matter). Whitney can SING!!! She has talent. The current group of “singers” in the spotlight are manufactured in the studio and are lacking in real singing ability. Beyonce is a great performer with her booty shaking music, but she is not to be compared with an angelic voice like Whitney Houston or strong vocals like Jennifer Hudson. And the other young ladies, they have no lasting affects in the industry at all, they’ll be gone tomorrow. I look forward to hearing Whitney’s beautiful voice again, I pray that she hasn’t lost it during her life struggles. Hopefully, those struggles have added something to her repertoire and her vocals are back and better than ever. I’m anxiously awaiting!

I am excited about a comeback. I’m an old school fairweather Whitney Houston fan–I NEVER GAVE UP ON YOU GIRL. If we can overlook some of the disgraceful chances these NFL, NBA and MLB players take surely we can give Whitney another chance.

After all, Whitney is still our sister.

Nuff said.

I am with the consensus-Please don’t ever again mention Ciara in the same sentence-UNIVERSE with Whitney Houston! Whitney Houston’s voice is her instrument. She doesn’t need videos, stage productions (No offense Beyonce) but I am old school. True singers like Patti, Gladys, Phyllis Hyman, Billie Holiday and Ms. Whitney don’t need props and back up dancers. Just their voice and a microphone. God Bless Whitney Houston. If she sounds even HALF as good as she used to she STILL sounds 100%better than these studio made, video stars, wannabe singers today.

I recommend listening to 1980s Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick. They were in a similar age as Whitney is today, yet they still made hids and had quite a presence. Even women have “puberty” in their voices; it just occurs at a later age and a more gradual pace.

The music will speak for itself. If it’s good, people will buy it. There’s not much quality music to choose from today anyway. The record companies have been pedaling junk for years now. The boot leg market has taken over and destroyed the record industry. There will no longer be platinum selling recording artists, so be happy for whatever you can get!
