Thanks to Twitter, Collective Soul’s 22,408 followers on the social networking website were the first in the loop after the Stockbridge-birthed band got into a bar fight Sunday night.
Oh, and they’re been banned for a year from the coastal beach city.
The Atlanta act, led by rocker brothers Ed and Dean Roland, were celebrating the end of a mini tour with pop star Gavin DeGraw Sunday night in Myrtle Beach, S.C. at an unnamed watering hole when a punch flew, striking Dean Roland in the face (female admirers of the band no doubt just gasped).
According to Ed Roland, who called in live to Q100’s Bert Show Monday morning to discuss the incident, a female patron “made a comment to her boyfriend about either my brother or Gavin being a good-looking dude.”
According to Ed Roland, the perturbed boyfriend “went for Gavin but got Dean” in the face.
Remarked Dean on the band’s Twitter page: “First shot I’ve taken to the face.”
DeGraw also tweeted updates from the brief brawl.
Wrote the singer-songwriter: “Me and my crew just got in a 20 man brawl with a group of juiced up
[expletive]. I guess they think that just cos I write love songs that I won’t throw down like a man. They were slow and drunk, but that whoopin is gonna hurt worse than their hangovers.”
Ed Roland confirmed on Q100 Monday morning that although no tickets were issued by police in the fracas, Myrtle Beach law enforcement officials informed the musicians they were “banned” from the resort for a year.
However, Collective Soul and DeGraw were still set to perform Monday night at the House of Blues there.
Cracked Roland: “It’s not like they’re going to have a Polaroid of Collective Soul at the city limits!”
Here at Buzz Central, we can only guesstimate at how much liquor and jealousy had to be involved in order to start a bar fight with the likes of the Collective Soul and Gavin DeGraw. We’ve spoken to both acts multiple times over the years.
The Rolands are ridiculously polite, courteous and, dare we say, prompt for interviews. And the most uncomplimentary thing we can think of to say about DeGraw?
In interviews, he consistently refers to us as “sir.”

This would’ve been a cool story if both Collective Soul and Gavin DeGraw suffered massive injuries that rendered them unable to make muxic anymore. Kudos to the dude for at least attempting to rid the world of their horrible music.

A beat cop can’t “ban,” anyone from anything. Now, the chief of police in Malibu? That’s a different story, Dude. He’ll keep undesirables out of his beach community.

Butch, you’re an ass. These 2 bands make great music. Music we so desperately need in a society filled with non talents like Brittany, Lady Ga Ga, and bands whose songs all sound the same (Nickleback anyone?). Didn’t your mother ever teach you if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all? I met these guys Saturday after show in Ohio. Great bunch of guys who love their fans. And polite. That redneck must have been real jerk to get them involved in a scuffle. I say, job well done CS & Gavin!

Maybe collective soul are gents now but when i was at ga southern back in 93-94, they came there and they were pretty high on themselves and imo jerks. maybe one bandmate was nice. the rest were self centered jerks. i helped construct their stage for them for no pay and not even a thanks when i approached them to say hi. they could care less what i had to say. they were just sitting around drinking at the bar. they sure thought they were special. heavin surely wasn’t shining light on them that day.

Are you kidding? Not only does Collective Soul have no talent, MOST of their music sounds exactly the same and I would even call them a Poor Man’s Nickleback. I really only see two differences between Collective Soul and Nicleback
1. Nickleback is relevant (somehow)
2. Nickleback doesn’t get their a**es kicked in local bars

Collective Soul may not be as much relevant anymore, but their music still rocks. Everytime i hear one of their songs, it reminds me of my late Aunt who was a huge fan of theirs. God Bless you Aunt Valerie …
I am not a fan of Nickelback, however, and do agree their songs sound very similar. But hey, just my opinion

LOL ok butch is right about one thing – nickelback are relevant so if you expect ppl not to hate on collective soul, don’t hate on nickelback either. they’re an awesome canadian band who are also really nice guys.
BUT butch, you’re still wrong about collective soul. they have talent or they wouldn’t be on the same label as nickelback. so whether YOU like them or not doesn’t take away from that fact. besides, even if they had no established talent, doesn’t give some low-life the right to hit any one of them. ever.

I’ve met some of these guys, and they are some of the classiest, generous, caring guys you’ll ever meet. Maybe when they first made it big, they had ego issues. I don’t know nor do I care. All I know is that now they are wonderful human beings who give a lot to their fans and society. And just because you don’t agree on someone’s taste in music, does not mean you should say they deserve to be punched? Ed, Dean, Gavin, your fans still love ya & are behind you all the way! As with everything in the meda these days, I’m sure this has been blown way out of proportion. Anyone who resorts to calling them names, well that just shows your maturity level.

Hey Butch,
The only reason Nickleback doesn’t get their asses kicked in bars is because they travel with security. They have a sixth sense for their own douchebaggery and plan accordingly.
Now, Collective Soul may have bad music, but I have NEVER known a southern rock band to travel with f-ing security. Southern boys, whether they show up at Paris Island or Roseland Ballroom, are just tougher than the rest. Fact.

Hey Hayseed,
Good point about Nickelback.
I don’t know if I’d really call Collective Soul ‘Southern Boys’ though. Yes, they are from the south but as you mean it I don’t think it applies. I don’t really think of ‘Southern Boys’ having earrings and having nicely manicured long hair and tight designer jeans. That’s just me though….
One more thought here, Collective Soul hasn’t been relevant since Creed showed us how a modern rock album is made.

And where is Creed? And Butch, wait till August 25 when Collective Soul’s new album comes out. You’ll see what modern rock is. Collective Soul is putting out their 8th studio album. 8! They’re not putting out the same thing over & over again. They’ve evolved. And their fans are loyal and devoted. If you heard them live, you’d be floored. Even if I don’t like a person’s music, when I hear them live & they’re good musicians, I know it & respect it.
You don’t think Southern boys have earrings? Hmm. Interesting. And believe me, Ed’s hair may be long, but not “manicured”. These guys are the real deal. I bet you wouldn’t get near Nickleback to get a pic & their autograph. And don’t tell me it’s because they’re so much bigger than CS. Anyone in that business needs to remember who puts them there-the fans! Oh it’s all good. That’s the great thing about America. We can all have our own opinions. And who decides what is relevant?

whether you hate/love collective soul (or nickelback), is besides the point. you can’t just go around hitting people you don’t like or who you deem ‘untalented’ by your personal standards. if you don’t like their music, don’t listen to it. no one is forcing you to.

Collective Soul rules. They are good on studio albums and better live. Guitarist is as good as there is and Ed’s got a great vocal sound. Just because they were a band of the 90s doesn’t mean they can’t still be great.

Man you fools be crazy. Here be the top 10
• Fullback Fred Munzenmaier – Arrested and charged with underage consumption of alcohol and pedestrian in road in January. Suspended for first two games of season.
• Safety Donavon Baldwin – Arrested for DUI and suspended for one game in January. Baldwin was involved and injured in a downtown altercation at the beginning of August. Dismissed from the team.
• Offensive lineman Clint Boling – Boling, a sophomore, was arrested for DUI in May before the charges were dropped to reckless driving. His original suspension of two games was dropped to one.
• Offensive linemen Justin Anderson and Trinton Sturdivant – Arrested for assaulting a pregnant woman on campus. Neither player received a suspension and charges were later dropped.
• Defensive end Jeremy Lomax – Arrested in June on charges of carrying a concealed weapon. Exonerated in July, no suspension.
• Defensive end Michael Lemon – Arrested and charged with felony aggravated battery stemming from an incident at a pool party in July. Dismissed from the team.
• Linebacker Darius Dewberry – Vandalized property at St. Mary’s Hospital in August. Was not arrested but admitted guilt to head coach Mark Richt, and served a two-game suspension to open the season.
• Long snapper Jeff Henson – After being arrested for a DUI in November 2007, Henson, 25, was arrested again in August on charges of public intoxication and public urination. Dismissed from the team.
• Offensive tackle Vince Vance – Arrested for requiring a license, presumably an expired one, Saturday night. Punishment, if any, not yet determined.
• Defensive tackle Brandon Wood – Arrested and charged with DUI and lights required at Sunday morning. Will be suspended for at least one game.

Well at least they didnt come to Atlanta and get robbed by the blacks like the Peal Jam members.
We need to find a way to trick all the Liberal Loons into taking some of Atlantas “diversity” up there with them to Seattle and San Fransisco since there so eager to get it. See how long it takes to turn Seattle into another New Orlenas, Atlanta or Detroit. Owait, add Baltimore and Memphis, Philly, Gary Indiana. All great examples of the greatness of “diversity”.

Don’t members of the Allman Bros. band and Skynyrd have earrings? And long hair? Last I checked, that’s southern rock too. Tom Petty has “long manicured hair” also. He’s southern.
And please don’t count Creed with them! Creed just plain sucked. Dude posed like he was jesus on the cross all the time. Told us all not to do drugs and then goes on stage high as a kite and passes out. Yea, they really lasted long. Just the fact that Butch mentioned them tells me all i need to know about him. Dumb

OK, so rambling aside, let’s get to the heart of the matter. Why should Ed, Dean, Gavin, or anyone else suffer for a sophomoric comment made by a girl clearly checking to see her boyfriend’s jealousy level? That punch-happy jerk has an issue with HER and needs to deal with it, without involving innocent bystanders.
